The Tall Carpenter
United Kingdom
Registrace 3. 10. 2014
I am a time served carpenter who has been working in the UK construction and development sector since 1986 when I started my apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner.
I am very fortunate to absolutely love what I do and get great joy and satisfaction out of creating some wonderful works of carpentry.
Much of my work is one of, small residential developments, but I am also lucky to have been able to be involved in some fantastically technical projects that really push and test the skill of a carpenter.
The sole purpose of filming and publishing videos of my work is to hopefully give people an insight into the kind of work I do, and also perhaps motivate younger viewers to maybe think about carpentry as a profession, and also pass a few tips and tricks onto those that already are carpenters.
I uploaded my first video on 18th November 2020.

What size are the roof rafters please im going to see If I can build this on a budget and just buy the materials from a timber yard lol
great video everything you said makes perfect sense 3 mil off makes a huge difference on the other end , and its not the end of the world 😂 something site manager would say
I think we dont rely by calculation and it should be verified by actual measurements. Many factors contributed of misfits of hips and others.
Just a thought, I might be wrong, but could you not just let that wall plate extend past the distance that you need and pitch the hip as normal off the corner?
I learned a lot from this brilliant video. Thank you, Tall carpenter
Hi there🖐Thanks for watching my videos and I'm pleased you find them interesting/helpful🤩Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter , you’re more like an artist, in the way you go about your work.
This video is fantastic, I love the tried and true methods that have been handed down through the years. Would you happen to have a video on how you calculate the rafters that attach to the hip rafters? There are two calculations that have to be taken into account, where the rafter connects to the hip, before the bird's mouth can be cut. These give me a lot of problems. They are never quite as flush as I need them to be for a good job.
I have to fix a studwork header plate to an RSJ, what method is best for a DiYer please?
Del I love you, will you be my Dad please. 😊
Of course Christopher 🤩
Thanks Dad 😊
Very helpful & very good work.
Thanks for your comment 🤩 and for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Pulling the hip rafters off the corners was explained very well but not sure why that needed to happen in the first place. Had to do this several times it used to drive me crazy because your expected to do this for the same money as a traditional hip and it does mess up everything, plumb cuts, side cuts, batten's , cappings, etc. and quite frankly it's a sows ear from start to finish. I can understand it for example if a chimney was interfering with the normal run of hip or valley and couldn't be moved but otherwise don't go off the roofing square
Clear as mud thx
😉
Del we use to nogg out cieling then gyp rock cieling then put stud work up what do you think off that method
Hi JP🖐I/we also used to do it like that, as it was much quicker to tack the ceiling AND you didn't have to put noggins in everywhere to support the plasterboard/fix the head plates to. We stopped doing that way for a few reasons which were. We started to see cracks along the board joints, especially on bigger ceilings, so tacking after the walls went in broke the ceiling up into smaller sections. On low pitched roofs, it made it a really awful job for the sparkies to 1st fix, especially getting wires down to the outer walls, and finally, the tackers didn't have to make a separate visit to site just to do the ceiling, they just came and did the walls, ceilings and dot and dabbing all in one go👍 I'm not saying I wouldn't do it this way anymore, just would have to be the right job😎Cheers Del
Such a simple idea, would save me the faff of catching the appliance on the metal corner braces I normally use to hold the shelf up. Thanks for sharing 👌
very neat job
Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
How freakin tall are you geez!?
Hi Rukon🖐I'm 1.97m tall, or just short of 6'6"🤠Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del

We always under cut the skirting in small corners like that rather than the pointless bit of scotia

The 36v makita rail/ plunge saw is very good aswell
I've got one Kyle👊Check out the video about it on my channel👍Cheers Del

Cheers Kelvin🤩Thanks for watching 😎
Thanks buddy iv just got myself some love ya video u make me laugh
Hi Kelvin🖐I use mine on every kitchen I do now👊Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Rip the whole thing out and put your corner newels in properly. Add a short return to the handrail and attach the newel at the top of the stairs.
That's not what the customer wanted Shawn😬Often, what SHOULD be done on jobs like these is not done in favour of what the client/customer wants🤔Thanks for your comment and for watching 😎 Cheers Del
I am in the process of replacing all the internal doors in my house, I was dreading the latch but this video is unbelievably helpful, so informative but also so straightforward. Thank you!!
I'm glad my video has helped👍Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Thanks
No worries Ray👍
I've fitted magnet kitchens for years in my experience I've hung rows and rows of wall units on platerboard fixings and by the time they are all hung and fixed together they are surprisingly stong as it sort of form one solid block, but always good practice to get at least to or three solid fixings too
Nice tip 👍🏽. Appreciate it.
My pleasure🤩Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Bravo ! Excellent work

My builder has told me we can't have different hight wall plates and that he needs to follow the hight of the crack beams which now means my facia boards not lining with my nioughborys house! And
Hi there🖐It would be unfair of me to comment on what you're builder has said/done without seeing what he was faced with🤔As you can see from my video though, you can have different plate heights👍Cheers Del
Going to do this for my client
Hi there👍It has 100% worked on this job, with no sweating around the reveal, even on the coldest winter day😎Cheers Del
Thanks for the video. What do you do if the floor is crooked?
Hi Mike🖐If the floor is bad, then the panel needs to be scribed and the bare edge sealed👍Cheers Del

Great ❤
Thanks for watching Jimmy🤩Cheers Del
I do similar but I put pocket hole screws in the spacers rather than resting on nails. The screws can help pull the lining square too but I like your way too
Hi there🖐Great suggestion🤩and now I actually have a pocket hole jig/drill, I will be doing the same👊Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Great video! Glad to see that you're impressed with the 'new kid' on the block 😁
Hi there🖐This gun has been very reliable if a bit awkward in tighter applications👍Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Please don’t say “It’s a building, after all”….. you know what ‘the planning’ are like…
Thank you, great tip. Especially for thermalite style blocks.
Great video for setting out, plus everyone makes mistakes and you're not afraid to show it. You didn't show us how you plum the top plate of the stud wall...
I dont really understand the toe in. I get that it can reduce tear out from the rear of the blade, but ive found it sort of makes the initial shallow pass useless. As when you make a deeper cut, the front of the blade takes off more material anyway, as opposed to the centre of the blade on the shallow cut. Also, if following the recommendation of having the teeth slightly coming through the other side when cutting, the top of the material is being cut by the front of the blade whereas the bottom of the material is being cut by the center of the blade. It must throw it out of square ever so slightly surely?
Do you make the gate 10 or 20mm narrower than the gap? Or wat clearance do you use? Thanks
Hi there🖐Although the timber will shrink and swell with the seasons, as you suggest, I probably make the gate 20mm smaller than the opening👍Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers
Nice one mate, just wondered why you drilled holes for the screws first instead of just screwing straight through? Dont think those boards would split/crack at all.. Cheers
Holding power?
Hi FR🖐I'm not worried about the boards splitting when pre-drilling for the screws, more than the screws tent to 'jack' the boards away from each other rather than being pulled down nice and tight👊Some people don't counter drill and just bury the heads until the boards are tight, but I think it's a bit rough😬Cheers Del
👍
👍
👍
I have this and it hasn’t missed a beat but only put about 1500 nails through it so far.
What's the rule for putting up all the overhead covering? I see lots of that in England. Must send cost through the roof
Hi there🖐The roof structure typically has a breathable membrane fitted, then 2x1 tile 'battens' fitted running the length of the roof, these are spaced anywhere from 4" to 10" depending on roofing tiles/slates, and finally either slate or concrete tiles are nailed to the battens overlapping from the bottom up. I guess it's more expensive than 1/2" sheathing and bitumen shingles, but the roofs, pretty much, last a lifetime👍Cheers Del
