Many discoveries are coming and with it huge leaps in our technology and our understanding of how the universe works. We're about to graduate from cosmic kindergarten. One question I’ve always had. Wouldn’t advanced stellar races just harness zero point/free energy for their needs instead of building huge behemoth structures which seem to be big, bulky and inefficient? I’ve always thought the whole Dyson sphere theory was ethnocentric/materialistic humans incorrectly assuming that advanced stellar races think the same way we do. Why do people still give credence to and put time, effort and money into this theory? I very well may be missing something. Am I?

Here's a theory to kick around the old noggin: what if we're NOT alone in the universe, BUT all "alien" civilizations in the universe originated on Earth? Like there's a set time interval between global cataclysms, making Earth the ultimate proving ground. Evolve enough to crack quantum gravity and unlock FTL drive in time to get off the planet before the next cataclysm rolls around and you get to continue as a part of the interstellar community. If you don't, and get bogged down in the idea that fossil fuel is the only answer to energy production, and spend all your time and resources getting it/fighting over it/suppressing alternatives, well, better luck in the next evolution. Because most of you will be so caught up doing that, you won't even see the destruction coming.

Tabby's star system has caught either a micro black hole or a small black hole and with that being a binary system and it having planets or moons there all those masses combined allowed the system to catch the black hole and sort of over power it. Once the black hole has finished ripping the moon or planet apart the rest of the system is screwed.

Why do we presume that aliens would be using devices similar to a Dyson array just to harvest light energy from a star. What if they are actually able to harvest the plasma emissions from star's nuclear fusion & use this in its much more energy dense form than solar radiation in the form of light?

If zero point energy is real, than would these spheres be pointless?

@shaung949 4-5 launches implies something like 200/250 tons per launch, achievable only if you make use of expendable Starships. For the reusable system, a paper suggests the number of 15 launches, taking into account the inevitable boil-off between launches. But we can be generous assuming that the boiloff is totally removed and setting the number to, say, 10 launches.

I feel like any civilization that could build a Dyson sphere should be able to access zero point energy, and if they could do that, why would they need to build a Dyson sphere?

I wonder if the civilizations that have reached this level of technological advancement also had to endure a time if lack of power while in the processes of building these so called, "Dyson Spheres?" In my mind, before these Dyson Spheres actually came online and started produced the needed energy, they most likely blocked more energy than they produced. I wonder what was used to make up the shortfall of energy while they were building these Dyson Spheres. It's hard to imagine a civilization choosing to let a portion of their population die for the sake of building their Dyson Sphere.

Tabby Star, maybe what we are seeing is the construction process of building a Dyson sphere. I imagine it would be much easier to disassemble a moon or large planetoid if it’s dragged close to its star in order to get a gravity assist in breaking them apart to save energy. The dust is detritus from the mining and processing.

But, to his credit, he raises the story up to another level with a scientific veneer. Fun to watch, but kooky nonetheless.

Dyson spheres won't make any sense, they don't need to build unthinkable structures around super massive objects. I believe they're capable of making energy in the most effective ways, just as we make it with nuclear fusion and fission, we are not building super giantic solar panel fields around the whole plane thus solar panels aren't just as effective as nuclear power.

Will never be found and will never happen because there will be "zero point energy" thingies.
