PT 4 BOUNDARY WATERS ON FIRE. SOLO CANOE CAMPING IN THE BWCA 2021
With mixed emotions I altered my plans and route to attempt an exhausting 12 hour marathon of paddling and portaging to get to what I believed was an area safe from the wildfires.

As the forest fires increased in size and number, I continued my solo trip with a wary eye on the smoke plumes to the north and west. I watched for canoe rangers knowing that they could ask me to evacuate. I saw no one. It dawned on me that because of the new Garmin Inreach my son in Michigan knew my exact location. If the fire situation had developed on any of my previous trips no one would kn...

A few days into my Boundary Waters canoe trip and I had to consider that the forest fire situation could alter or end my canoe trip at any time. I began paying close attention to smoke conditions, winds and weather forecasts as I travelled through an area with several growing wild fires.

The third video of what started out as possibly the worst canoe trip of the year. Call it a challenge or call it a beat-down, either way I was warned. Join me as I paddle the final leg of the Two Hearted River through the historic 21,135 acre burn area from the 2012 Duck Lake Forest Fire. Paddling the Two Hearted is a trip to remember.

ICE-OUT SPRING CAMPING - FAREWELL WINTER

I have spent many early springs days on Lake Superior when the ice was thick and the snow was deep. This year Gitchi-Gami, The Great Sea, surprised me with an early ice out, a snake on the snow and the beauty of changing seasons. Join me on an overnight bushwhack camping trip as I say farewell to winter and hello to spring. Thank you for watching. Follow on Facebook: Hermits-Outdoo...
Hiking O'Neal Lake Trail. Early Winter Northern Michigan.

The O'Neal Lake trailhead is located 20 minutes south-west from the Mackinac Bridge or 45 minutes north from Petoskey, Michigan. The O'Neal Lake Trail can be linked with the South Boundary Trail and the Swamp Line Trail in Wilderness State Park to make a nice 9 mile loop with very little elevation and few obstructions. When I hiked it in late December footing was fairly dry but it definitely ha...

Timing isn't everything: The fact that I didn't get to see your video till now ain't the point. The point it exists is all that matters.
See I just gotta tell ya I'm so proud of you, happy for you, impressed and depressed by you, and reminded by you of all the things I wanted to do, but never did - planned to do, but weren't allowed to do - have to do and struggle not to hate by thinking of all you're doing that rubs up against my once plentiful and overflowing bag of dreams I can no longer bear cuz reality rips at it so. So thanks for doing what you do. You do it so well.
Where’d you go!? It’s been 2 years since your last video. Hope you’re well.
Each of the past two summers I did 60 day self supported solo canoe trips covering the boundary waters canoe area wilderness. It was a life changing experience.
@@HermitsOutdoorAdventures you’re amazing! I teach at Jack Mountain Bushcraft and Guide School and I use you as a shining example
@@diogenesthedog8541😳😳😳 you use me as an example?
Beaver tail
Thats a beaver slapping its tail trying to let you know he does not want you their , they slap the water with their tails to try and scar things away when they are nervous
This was great....I thoroughly enjoyed the entire series. Thank you for taking us along!
My new "must watch" channel on CZcams! I love your enthusiasm. Thank you very much for the video....I will be checking out many more.
I've been to that river and I admire you for taking it all the way from high bridge. I know there's a ton of log jams down that stretch. Nice work!
There was a time that I'd be happy to join you on such a river trip...but no longer. 😀 I think you heard a bigfoot practicing with his .22.
Nuce fish
Great video !! I love the 2-❤ river been on it many times!!
Thanks so much for sharing! It took me back over 20 years ago when I did the same trip solo, only in late August. There was a resort near the mouth that would drop you off at High Bridge, and I put up a camp at Reed and Green campground. Never thought. I would make it there in one day, with all the log jams and bushwhacking through the alders. Pre- fire burn, the leg from Reed/Green was almost jam-free and still beautiful.
Congratulations….many more journeys to you
Good On Ya for sharing these Two Hearted River episodes. Yikes! I was feeling the frustrations with those log jams. Your demeanor from what I see, is a value within such a setting. I'm just glad to have learned what a Beaver sounds like at night, that was wicked scary! *<(:-)
Awesome!
Good to see like minded people, looks like it was worth it to me.
Any new adventures in the works? The big two hearted river trip of yours , is my all time favorite canoe trip to watch! Epic fun!
I did two long wilderness canoe trips, a 2 month and the next season a 50 day. Both unsupported. I have some footage but didn’t want the distraction of recording daily. I have been considering making something out of the footage that I do have.
Thanks for sharing your epic trip! This is my first year of canoeing and kayaking and I'm learning a lot watching you. How heavy is your canoe?
It’s 30ish pounds. Hope you have many awesome years of paddling. 😊
I enjoyed the videos thank you. Wish you would’ve cut and drug all them logs out for when I go. 😆
I had to leave some fun for you 😂
@@HermitsOutdoorAdventures I think I’ll stick with the Taquanemon River . Lol
That’s a good paddle too! And the fishing there is great 😁
I could not hear it well, but I was thinking a white-tail deer snorting...
Great job. Must give you alot of credit. About 11 years I did the same trip with my 14 year old son and a friend. Was meant to be a fishing trip but spent our energy on portaging our 2 canoes what felt like 60x. Beautiful country. Again, Kudos to you for doing it solo.
Epic. Just watched all 3 parts in a row. Had to see if you made it to the end. Did not disappoint.
Well boy-O-boy, er, or should say, girl-O-girl, I really liked that, so peaceful and calming. So you appear to have that solo canoeing down to a fine art. Those big shoreline pieces of ice are a little threatening, don't know why, but you seemed to take them all in stride. Have been wanting to see some winter river travel for some time and now I have. Got to say it gives the river scene a whole additional coating of tranquility and inclusion if I can use that concept here and have it apply. Well thanks so much I feel like my knowledge has been added to.
This is a great video series. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
Boy did you work your way through some rough stuff.
This is to hard for a lot of guys, only a woman who can birth children and work jobs can do this rough of stuff,
😉
I rarely comment on videos. I can't help it but when I saw you bending over placing your canoe in the water with the floppy hat and a knife on your hip, I thought I was seeing Bill Mason again. Your paddle is just as good. Deja vu all over again. I am not saying you look like a man. I am talking about two spirits coming together. .
That is a beautiful complement. I saw my first Bill Mason canoeing movie as a child at an outdoor amphitheater on Lake Superior and was hooked for life.
You are a lady of few words, but you carry a big stick. I wonder what you do for exercise.
More of that and kayaking, hiking, cycling, skiing, snowshoeing …yard work🤔
New to this little trip - in a world of CZcams trip videos. It's not just the clarity of video and audio, but the talking and recaps of steps taken and angles of showing foot paths and such that I really, really love! Oliver here, we had a great day together about two weeks ago on the river down to Basswood Lake. I see in the video you say it's your last time doing the "Horse Portage" and you said that a year before you swore the same decision - but I know you did it again this year! Fresh veggie burrito wraps at the end, on the rocky beach :) It was only our day 8 (food barrels are amazing for preserving fresh food when kept in the shade as much as possible) but your day over 40 and continuing.
Meeting you and Nick was the best bit of happenstance ever ❤️
How long would you say it took you to get from High Bridge to Reed & Green?
There are too many variables to give you a useful answer.
How old are you? Your in some good shape haha
54🤫use it or lose it
She is in some great shape. We kayak. Those blockages wear you out.
Great video!! I have some great memories on that river. My favorite family photo was taken at the base of Sturgeon falls in the Sturgeon gorge on the Sturgeon River ❤❤❤
Doing this trip this fall. I heard you say you stashed a bike at the take out... where did you leave the truck during the trip? I see a small trail head parking up the road. Any issues leaving the truck in the forest a couple of days?
I left the truck parked out of the way on an old access down by the river that looks like it might have been the old road. I had no troubles.
Small electric chainsaws are awesome. Would the DNR have an issue with this I wonder? I use them to clear atv trail.
What a fantastic adventure, however every log jam, brush whacking portage. I’m like give this lady a break river. 🤙🛶
😂 I only recorded some of them because of all the work involved.
@@HermitsOutdoorAdventures it looked like a hell of a lot of work. My heart was sinking as you came up on “ another” logjam. It was great viewing, you have a cracking “ J stroke” technique. Happy paddling and I hope you get less “ work” on the river. 🛶 ha ha
The pandemic did do some good things....like this video! Loved your humming the O Canada in the first vid...:~) Merci!
🥰 thank you for watching
Hahaha,! I always agree with your choices in Chips! Here i am curious aboutthis boat now! A Northstar 16 ft magic!
Super fast and light. Handles like a dream. That being said my Phoenix has more capacity is more maneuverable and I find it to handle big water wind and waves better.
im curious about where in canada you from? northern ontario and quebec myself... and did you move to the USA? looks like bwca offers A LOT of opportunities to explore
I am originally from Northern Ontario. District of Algoma. I’m a dual citizen and have been exploring and living in different parts of the States.
@@HermitsOutdoorAdventures fantastic! I lived in Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake as a kid ....Also moved around the US a little...Funny thing...Im a travelling nurse...why do I get that nurse vibe from you?
congratulations! well done!!
Good morning lion hearted woman! just found you on YT. Nothing put out since a year? Hope everythingis ok. Wondering...what canoe is this? looks like an old camper in Royalex maybe? keep on keepingon!
The canoe is an older OT Pack canoe. I did a two month solo last year but have been making TikToks instead of CZcams. I have plans to start back with CZcams this summer. Thanks for watching. Check me out on Tiktok if you have the inclination
@@HermitsOutdoorAdventures Hi, I tend to stay away from Tiktok. A little paranoid maybe...lol, but also im already addicted enough to my screen!! lol but now you've piqued my curiosity...... it must be a 14 or 15 footer.... im selling an Evergreen Sunburst 2. 60 lbs... i want to try a lighter composite...Royalex was great for my WW learning curve....still hanging on to my 16 foot prospecteur in RX ...for the eventual long tandem expeditions...;-)
@@blackspruceroutes as a pack canoe in Royalex lite it is easy to handle. I am small so the 12 ft length has more than enough room for short trips and it is very maneuverable on small rivers and creeks
@@HermitsOutdoorAdventures Yes I also have an old Town pack 12ft. Not really used to the flat bottom... with not much secondary stability... But it's a charm to carry around!!! Looking at getting some kind of inegra layup in a 14 footer...but wow !!$$$$$ Would you have any suggestions as to which free app might be best for editing .mov video files ? Or must I pay???
@@blackspruceroutes if you pull the gunnels in slightly with shortened thwarts you can alter the flat bottom feel of the Pack. As for video editing I started with the free imovie, outgrew it and moved to Final Cut Pro
If more canoeists carried Silky Big Boy Folding Saws or a Council Tool's Camp Axe, we'd have the finest rivers and portage trails in the World...just take out or off what is either dead or deadly and move on. That is one nice canoe too. It looks very easy to turn, even in that cross wind that slammed into you. Nice production. I'm subscribing. Respectfully, Mr. T.C. Cross Detroit, Michigan *P.S.* This just gave me another Camping & Canoeing Trip idea! Taking off for no other reason than to go out and clear portages and #StealthCamp while doing it. Two birds, one stone. Hmmm........
Admire ya wish i had it me to take off like that
Couldn't look more straight up and down that hill
I had a good laugh when you were folding up your saw and pulled out a huge knife to use as a screw-driver! Never let anything slow you down--just adapt and keep on making progress!
Necessity is the mother of invention 😉
You sure are a tough gal. And I mean that in the most complimentary way. WOW!!! GRIT!!! and no complaints. Way to go. If I were you I'd set those kids down and show them what mom's made of. 😏
Thanks. Makes it hard to find trip partners 😂
I love your attitude when starting out your trip. So upbest and all smiles. Makes me want to go right now, and as far as old, you look like a sporting chicken to me. I'm 70.😁and what do the kids know anyway.
I like your positive attitude as well😊
You ever think about doing a breakdown of all your gear? Also looking forward to more of your adventures!
Thats a very good idea. I I did a 2 month trip last summer without documenting much of it. I wanted to become part of the wilderness without distractions. This summer I’m going back for 37 days and will probably document.
Such a cool trip! Looking forward to watching the other parts of this series!
brilliant watch great video/trip/adventure well done really enjoyed this thanks for putting this up classsssssssssss
At the 12 minute mark, what is brand of the folding saw that you were using?
