  • With mixed emotions I altered my plans and route to attempt an exhausting 12 hour marathon of paddling and portaging to get to what I believed was an area safe from the wildfires.

    New to this little trip - in a world of CZcams trip videos. It's not just the clarity of video and audio, but the talking and recaps of steps taken and angles of showing foot paths and such that I really, really love! Oliver here, we had a great day together about two weeks ago on the river down to Basswood Lake. I see in the video you say it's your last time doing the "Horse Portage" and you said that a year before you swore the same decision - but I know you did it again this year! Fresh veggie burrito wraps at the end, on the rocky beach :) It was only our day 8 (food barrels are amazing for preserving fresh food when kept in the shade as much as possible) but your day over 40 and continuing.

      I did two long wilderness canoe trips, a 2 month and the next season a 50 day. Both unsupported. I have some footage but didn’t want the distraction of recording daily. I have been considering making something out of the footage that I do have.

    Thanks for sharing your adventure. I thought that going solo by boat and motor on Rainy Lake was something of a challenge ( I never did it before , now i can say , ive gone twice in a row .) but I'd say you got most beat by a few miles 🤣 with your trip. At 66 years young , I just don't wish to work as hard as you. I have invited my Son inlaw to go with me, his response was , if there is no running hot water shower, the answer is no, however my Son joined me for two nights of my eight night stay on an Island just north of KettleFalls.
    I love camping on those islands , it's like a small step back in time. If I was younger I'd definitely give the Canoe trips a try but with a bum shoulder and knee , I'll have to enjoy adventures by watching all you younger ones . Thanks again 🤗
    How do you handle your dish water after dishes ?

    • @HermitsOutdoorAdventures
      @HermitsOutdoorAdventures  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for watching along. Any adventures a good one no matter the length it’s the joy that matters. Good for you to keep finding that joy anyway you can. As for dishwater I don’t always use soap if I don’t need it. If I do I use Dr Bronners unsented castile bar soap for everything, dishes, me and laundry. I eat every last scrap of food and wash dishes in a collapsible vinyl coated canvas bucket. And I dump the water well back in in the bush. If I was just boiling water no washing needed but sometimes I manage the outer pot soot with wet sand.

    Today is March 12, 2022 and I'm in a 10-day quarantine at a hotel here in Taipei so I have nothing but time. I just watched all four videos in this series again. Hermit, if you ever decide to leave your desk job, you can go into business accompanying people on their BWCA trips documenting their journey on video. Your production quality is unrivaled. My hat is off to you.

      @HermitsOutdoorAdventures  Před 2 lety +1

      You can definitely turn your prospecteur around and paddle bow seat backwards. I did it for years in a similarly designed 15’ canoe. That will get you in the water right away. Just pay attention to the trim of the canoe. Sometimes a little weight in the front is all that you will need. If you have a chance to test paddle other canoes you will figure out what works best for you. Like shoes it can be a very personal choice.

    Your camera work and editing is leaps and bounds above so many other YTbers. Keep it up and hopefully your channel will take off. You should do a collaboration with Brooke Whipple - A Girl in the Woods.
    Also do you use a gimbal for your GoPro?

      Merry Christmas to you as well. I am sorry that I don’t have a series for you. I did a 2 month solo trip covering as much of the Boundary Waters as possible this past June and July. My focus was to quietly observe and immerse myself in the wilderness. I spent very little time recording. I do have limited video footage from my phone that I might put together as a summary.

    Don't worry about the paddling style/technique. Do what you have to do. Hey, it's still a single blade! 😉 What an interesting trip with the wildfires. Glad you got out okay and still managed to have a good time despite having to change plans. Hope you enjoyed your banana split!

    • @HermitsOutdoorAdventures
      @HermitsOutdoorAdventures  Před 2 lety

      😊 Ya. I don’t worry about it. I love my stroke. Back in the day single blade method and style was the big controversy. Almost to the point of being a measure of how Canadian a person was. 😂 Now I have guys trying to tell me to use a kayak paddle to canoe. There will always be those guys. 🤦🏻

  • @reddeercanoe
    @reddeercanoe Před 2 lety

    I have a suggestion for you . Your Nothstar solo canoe lends itself to being propelled by a kayak paddle. Don't use a regular kayak paddle but 230 or 250 cm long paddle.
    This is the fastest method of forward propulsion and I use it to conquer head winds and power into the whitecaps. I carry Grey Owl Northerm lite paddle as my second paddle as I take great pleasure from using my wrists and prying off the gunwale while trolling with my canoe.
    As a 70 year old Canadian paddler so I can relate to your small person problems and I paddle a Swift solo canoe which like your Nortstar was designed by David Yosts .

    • @HermitsOutdoorAdventures
      @HermitsOutdoorAdventures  Před 2 lety

      Yes I have seen people go this route. I am very familiar with a kayak paddle as I also have sea kayaks and river kayaks. I prefer the feel and rhythm of the canoe paddle in my canoe. I have had zero wrist issues since moving to bent shaft switch paddling and can move along at a fairly good clip. I paddle like I breathe, without thought or struggle.

      I am a petite person. 5’3” and 110 lbs. I do not lack the strength to paddle a canoe into the wind with a canoe paddle. Perseverance, technique and using the wind-canoe angle to your advantage can all be used successfully. And sometimes no matter the type of paddle its better to wait it out from shore.

      @@HermitsOutdoorAdventures My son and I pushed up through the little rapids and landed right before the campsite. it is a nice little campsite that has a lot of river noise. there is a small trail that leads roughly along the water which turns into a real brush push and ends in a fairly precarious steep landing that is close to a chute. There are two interesting (not usable) old pully cable carts that cross to Canada where we put back in the water. That put you across from the flat shore rock close to the end of the horse portage. it was a struggle. We ended up arriving at the landing of horse portage at about the same time as a couple other people in our group that just opted to do the same route you did.
