    Yup. No more passivity in interviews because once you sign, you are bound to that agreement. And a lucid interviewee is more often a better worker. They understand the contract they signed.

    In my area of the country the main employer just doesn't hire qualified older workers for key or professional positions. In fact they don't hire older workers at all and usually will hire a younger person from a foreign country rather than hire an older worker and it shows in their work performance. The young workers make all sorts of mistakes but they are still given preference & grace while the older workers are go en the boot. That is why I don't for work for or buy the main employers products. Its just part of equal treatment on my part. I have a great employer instead that hires workers of all ages. You just have to look until you find an employer like mine.

    This generation works 10 to 12 hrs. Not worth it. Your body will take a whooping. Not for me. Im 61 and tried it for 3 months. The supervisor hollared at me til I reported her ( she is 26) When she explained to me what to do I was tops in the department. Then the played this game to slow down my efforts. Its all a game with this generation.

    I was hoping for advancement at a job where I'd been for years, tackling growth assignments, taking over high-level responsibilities, doing projects and having great successes. I was getting compliments on my work. Then we got a new boss who transformed our workplace into and 80s/90s high school teen movie: mean girls, cliques, toadies, snitches, and a sneering cruel jock for a boss. No use going to HR - he was a charmer when he wanted to be, and he had HR in his pocket. Upper management didn't care, and let him run off-leash 24X7. I did everything he asked for and went out of my way. He faked paperwork to get rid of me, gave me the coldest hug I've ever gotten, and walked me out the door on a February night. Did I mention that I was 16 years older than him?

      56% of workers over the age of 55 are fired from their jobs because of their age. Those folks are usually replaced by a younger, less expensive worker. From my experience the employer doesn't care whether that person is an immigrant or non-immigrant.

    Age 50 has been the standard layoff age for decades, nothing has changed, we cost more, have more medical issues, not everyone has kept up with new technology, we cost the company too much. Used to be that retirement was after 20 years of work so companies like K-Mart used to lay off people at 19 years to avoid paying pensions. I made it to 56 before I was laid off. The key is to plan for age 50 retirement. This should be a lesson to all twenty somethings, start saving for Age 50 layoff, it takes 30 years to build $1 million saving $1000 a month @ 6.25% compound interest.

      Yes, plan as early as possible. Unfortunately, 20% of adults ages 50+ have no retirement savings, 61% worry they won't have enough at retirement.

    Stating that you have a long experience can become a liability. In particular if you haven't reached that pivot point in your career when you are telling others what to do, instead of being told what to do. "Why should we hire this guy that has been doing that same thing for years and years without reaching a more senior position by now?"

    Understand that you are NOT required to sign any disciplinary doc. As GM, I encouraged my team members to openly talk about their issues and explain what they thought about regarding their responsibility. If they declined to sign, I had them write "declined to sign" & initial it.

    I wonder if my situation is a bit different as a government employee. My old boss went to another agency 9 months ago, and she recently contacted me to tell me I could get the same job I have now at her new agency but for $12,000/year more and much lower stress, but also a lot more boredom since the workload's much lighter. Regardless, I submitted my resume to them and got offered the job. My current boss countered by telling me they're working on creating a new position that would be the same pay grade as the other agency, and I'd be a team lead where I'd be responsible for creating and administering a training program. My boss said he can't offer it to me outright (it's just how the government works) but he thinks I'm by far the strongest person on the team and should consider applying. This is consistent with what he has been telling me for a while now - he has always held me in extremely high regard, so his flattery is nothing new to me at all. But based on what I know about other team lead positions, they tend to be overwhelming, very political, and extremely stressful. The two current team leads said their jobs are really rough and have hurt their quality of life. So long story short, I basically have a choice between taking a job that could be insanely boring vs a job that could be insanely stressful. If it matters, my team has had a lot of turnover lately, and my boss really doesn't want to lose me since I'm his top performer. My old boss said her anxiety has really plummeted at the new agency due to the far smaller workload, but she's bored a lot of the time and said the days go by really slowly. I don't really like either potential situation all that much. I'm really stuck here...what would you do?

    I never net a competent HR person. They are usually weak and side with management. The GM and his team gang up on them. The decent ones quit and do something else. Management is usually unqualified and, in some cases, criminal.

      In my decades of being in business I've met some really good HR people. Folks I respected. But, I've also met HR people that in my opinion should never have gotten that particular job.

    That's so awesome you put up my comment. I'm a woman by the way. The friend I mentioned is not getting SS. He plans to work as long as he can. What you said about getting a teaching job while earning a degree is so true because that's what I've been doing along with my full time job. I've also had 3yrs of paid internships because it appears that either the younger generation is not interested and/or they don't have the work ethic and experience to see the extra work through. What I'm trying to do is parlay my experience into a new career. I don't care if I work until I die, I only want a job I love because my current job is at an end for me for a few reasons.

VERY IMPORTANT, K- to- 7-grade, BY 7-GRADE THE KIDS CAN STAND ON THEIR OWN 2-FEEL, FROM THE DYSFUNCTIONAL PEOPLE AROUND THEM. A TEAM WORKING TOGETHER! You need to have a HANDLE of trust on the students. NO ONE disrupts the class. The week is always plan, to get done by THURSDAY. FRIDAY IS FREE PLAY LEARNING.

    Thank god I completed my teacher certification 20 years because its the best employment insurance against the rampant ageism that exists in both the public and private sector. Having the teacher certificate is your ticket to a decent lifestyle you wont be in high six figures but depending on where like Kelly said avoid expensive west coast states. Lou covered a great topic like teaching as a second career I recommend obtaining teacher training like on classroom management. Outstanding career topic Lou make teaching a second career. 🎉😊🎉

    In 2012 I got a new job after 18 years at one company. It wasn’t a good fit, the commute was over 3 hours per day and I was let go after 7 months. I was 54 years old. I quickly got my part time job back at Home Depot and I was very, very lucky and got a contract position in my field only 30 days later. That contract got renewed every quarter and after a year I got hired at my current company. I have been here 10.5 years and I thank God every day.

      How can there be a good reason to fire an older worker when generally accepted research reveals that older workers stay on the job three times longer than younger workers. Since training new workers isn't cheap why not just keep the experienced and productive older worker in place?

I’m trying to complete an online résumé and I don’t know how to accommodate for the gaps in my employment.

      One or two gaps can often be accounted for (i.e., took care of an ailing relative, took time off to volunteer at a non-profit, went back to school, etc.). Frequent gaps are harder to explain.

      Another strategy you can use to account for gaps in your resume is to pretend you are the employer and ask yourself what would they want to hear from you regarding the gaps.

    ZERO luck on job websites (100's of resumes, LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.) The only success is to reach out to my previous network and ask for work, say you are still out there doing work, took pay cuts ugh, and continuing to be persistent. It is a tough market when you are near 60.

    I’m 56 and have been out of the workforce for 3 years. I’m an RN, CPC with extensive experience with on both side of the managed care worlds. Even with my unique background, I have not had any experience offers in the last 3 months. I am thrilled to hear about the remote patient advocate positions! THANK YOU!

    Im 47. 99.9 percent of what I learned from my parents, teachers, peers, TV and printed media was a LIE.

    I would say that it's very easy to get motivated when you know what you want! I have almost NEVER known exactly what I wanted, but during the 2 times in my life where I thought I had an idea, I remember that it was WAY easier to stay focused and motivated!

      Yes!! Motivation is the key to success for all of us. We can't move forward or overcome obstacles unless we believe.

    No one cares about you and what you want. I don't need to work and I tried to retire, but I was called. Stop the, me, myself and I. Be other people focused on what others' needs are. The more people you can help, the more successful you will be. The work will dictate what skill set is required. Your mission is to be able to learn anything effectively, obtain results, and train like a professional athlete (endurance and strength). Help someone else with their dream and ride the wave.
