Another reason 50+ people desperately need to change jobs is because they can no longer do the physically demanding job they’ve been doing for years. I am 69 and full retirement is not an option. As a self-employed senior caregiver for 17 years, I no longer take clients who require lifting. Thankfully, I have never experienced ageism all these years because clients prefer an older, mature, responsible person to look after their loved ones.
I am thinking about getting into this, with the "no lifting" clause. I am in the healthcare field and deal with the geriatric daily. As a 61 yo I have a lot of empathy for the physical limitations. Working with lots of younger people, I see that I will not be able to do this for years to come because of the technology. (MRI). Can you tell me how you get into this as a self employed person? Because working for a company pays a pittance, and they put a lot of restrictions on you, such as limiting your time with the person. I do not want to be rushed.
Two years ago at the age of 55 i decided to put together my 10 year work/retirement plan. The hustle culture of working 50-60 hours per week was no longer appealing to me. I was done chasing money. Life is too short, so i came up with the plan of working until i'm at least 65 years of age by working only 3 days a week (Wednesday, Thursday & Friday). I'm on year two of this plan and loving it. I no longer let work consume my life. I'm done being a full time corporate/wage slave. I'm enjoying my extra free time while i still have my health. I'm also keeping a low taxable footprint. Money is not everything!
Definitely want flexibility!! I love what I do, but the stress is getting worse every day working 5 days a week.
Having a somewhat flexible schedule keeps me sane.
The job market is pretty slim right now. I finally was hired at Home Depot, but they only offer PT employees, maybe, 20 hours a week with a schedule at their discretion.
Home Depot! Wow, that brings back memories of when I worked weekends at Home Depot, bartended at night, and did food demos at Whole Foods. That schedule just about killed me. I hope you can get a full time gig.
I took a career aptitude test when I was at a crossroads in my life after qualifying for financial assistance due to a little known 🇺🇸 program that provided money for education to people that were laid off due to foreign trade. I was able to zero in on what my personality, skills, likes and dislikes were. Now my net worth is nearly 1mil.
I am unemployed now for 6 months as a Tech Worker. I am sure I am being discriminated against. After applying to 150+ jobs, I am now applying to Starbucks, a swimming school and others. I am getting rejection emails from those too. I am running out of options.
I'm sorry this is happening to you. If you haven't considered starting a side hustle maybe this is the time to do it. Check out my Side Hustle Rules CZcams channel for some ideas. I'm going to mention your situation in forthcoming video I'm producing, titled "Everyone Over 45 Should Have a Backup Plan". Maybe situations like yours will help wake people up.
Get into plumbing you wont ever be looking for another job ever again, most times when i change jobs they come and find me and make me the offer haha
At age 58, I bought my first rental house for $55k, then at 59 1/2 I cleaned out what was left of my $65k in my 401k and started building my rental portfolio. Hopefully I can make enough retire or at least survive when the AI comes for my job, we’re already training it seems. Currently I have a four plex, a duplex and 7 single family homes in a small town, I am moving into the smallest house which I own outright
That takes guts. I admire you for doing that and hope it all goes very well for you.
@@rubberbiscuit99 I don't really see that I have much choice, getting older, mobility challenged and willing to try to do something besides sit and wait for the government to decide if I am worth keeping alive or turning into plant food.
I can’t wait to come on your channel and talk about teaching. It checked several boxes that you talked about. I just have to get through these last 2 weeks of school. BTW first to comment
Hey! Thanks for being the first to comment! I'm also looking forward to our interview.
I would recommend everyone keep job hunting even if they have a job they like, and aim to apply to at least one job a week. Most organizations do a cull of their employees every quarter so you might as well have a head start on the job hunt in case your name comes up. This is the advice I wish I had followed since I was in my 20s.
I am 57 and switched jobs 10 months ago but already want to change because it doesn't suit me at all. I did some personality tests like the Briggs-Myers test and the career fitter test you recommend which gave some great insights into what I would like to do. Ideally I should work freelance but I would need a large emergency fund for that which I am building up while trying out different side hustles like writing for Medium.
I turn 51 this year and my job as an early childhood educator is taking a toll on me physically. Unfortunately the skills I have aren't transferable so I'm stuck.
I always wonder if people had just stayed on their farms and never left for the factory jobs would we be better off? It would have been a hard life but there would have been a certain level of independence. We are way too dependent on government and big corporations to live.
Although Career fitter test is free, the results are not.. fyi. But it's interesting up to that point.
Hey Annie! I haven't taken the test in a while but last time I took the free test I got results. I'll check it out but in the meantime email me if you want to take the full test, absolutely free, and I'll send you a link. lou@over50tv.com
What, save from zero?
I get it. I really do.
You think a 32 year old worker could retire? 😂
As a 29 year old, yall need to just retire. I can not find a decent job because people with 30+ years keep taking them. You all are ruining the job market even more than the housing market.
