  • In my recent State of Ageism address to The Village Chicago, a social community of people over 50, I shared 7 steps you can take to beat ageism in the workplace and make money too. These are tried and true steps I found to be very effective against a culture that values youth over experience, cheap labor over skills and accepts apathy over work ethic.

    1. Invest in yourself
    2. Start a side hustle
    3. Improve your communication skills
    4. Bargaining power
    5. Master your interview skills
    6. Work with a mentor
    7. BECOME AN EXPERT
These are just the key points. The gentleman in this video has great emphasis on each.

In my field, industrial maintenance younger workers don't want the the jobs and don't have or don't want to learn the skills. I retired at the end of last year and have been invited to come back part time. I would call it reverse ageism companies need skilled workers and don't want to take the time to train younger workers if they can find any that what to "work".

I have seen this first hand..most employers do not really value a work ethic any longer..they only want the cheapest labor...FK em...at this point in your life...do a job that you like/enjoy..I agree stay fresh, smart , keep up on technology and DO NOT discuss any health issues you may have...

At 58 I am low-key expected to be agreeable, quiet, and go with the flow at work. Success has been found by not giving in to this stereotype. All done with EQ, but very important to stay in the game.

It is important to stay in the game. But the rules must be fair and equitable for all. If they are not change the game. Thanks for your comment.

Ageism is the last acceptable prejudice.

It’s not acceptable but it is certainly tolerated.

As for interviewing skills: can you do a video on answering questions that can signal out older workers-questions that are aimed at the millennial set? Transparency? How does the company/position reflect your values? I have had some of these questions. Is there a good source to find either the definitions of/how to answer some of these millennial-oriented definitions?

I am in the process of creating a series of videos that focus on the best way to answer the eight most asked interview questions. The completion date is at minimum a month away. In the meantime, I will produce a video that addresses some of your concerns. In that video's description box I'll include some sources you can use. I should have this done in the next couple of weeks. Thanks!

How to get a new job at 59?

    • @Over50tv
      @Over50tv  Před 3 lety +2

This is a very difficult question to answer without knowing an individual's circumstances, but in general--if at all possible--I would stay in my current job while planning my exit. Planning would include looking at the seven ideas in this video and drilling down on one or two of them. have a video coming out in the next couple days that highlights seven income generating ideas for people over 50. If that person is unable to stay in the current job I would focus attention on securing an income source (no matter what it is) and then planning a longer term career move.
