Peak District Walks: Luds Church and The Roaches
This is my first time to the Staffordshire Peaks and it is truly spectacular! The Roaches and Luds Church are two famous landmarks of the area, with Luds Church being a natural chasm formed by a landslip thousands of years ago and The Roaches is a natural gritstone escarpment.
This circular walk takes in both of these features and absorbs the breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and countryside.
Distance: 10.6km
Ascent: 371m

Its not a feature I use but I think it has it
Only advice I would give is this: Start your walk at Cumbria because the wind will always be behind you instead of in your face.
Love the video Joe. Such great scenery, it really is a beautiful area. I have been to Tiitesworth reservoir, below the Roaches, with my family a few times when visiting my daughter from Macclesfield. Thanks for the effort you put in to your videos, they are always enjoyable.
Thank you! 😁
Beauty! Love these English names, "Roaches" "Hen Cloud" etc. Your traveling companion added a little levity Joe...thanks as always for the great views & don't stop!
Thank you!
Another great video.
My boyfriend and I got back from the lake district today. We had a beautiful week there. We went to Holme woods looking for that waterfall and after trekking up a very large hill we found some water but we couldn't locate the actual waterfall 😂 we had about a 3 hour walk/climb in search of this fall but to no avail. So thank you 😂
More than happy to send Grid Reference or map for it next time you are in the area :)
Lud's Church and the Roaches are lovely. It's a nice hike from the other end of Hen Cloud. Thanks for sharing Joe.
Thank you!
I did this a few weeks ago for the e first time..luds church, the roaches and hen cloud..it was super early in the morning, very grey and wet but just as beautiful…can’t wait to go back on a clear day 😁
Definately go back on a sunny day! Stunning!

New subscriber 😊 great osprey footage, just doing my research heading down to Dorset in July 👍
Thank you! What research are you doing?
@WalkingintheWildwithJoeJackson having never visited Arne, I'm watching blogs vlogs etc to plan my trip in the summer, thank you for posting 👍
That's a stunning hike Joe. I've done it from Higger Tor and back and also from Redmires and gone along to the left and to Ox Stones Trig before coming back to Redmires. You are right, on a great day the views are amazing. I have one question for you. Where do you stand on trespass? The reason I ask is that there are several Ethels which are on private land. The person who created the challenge stated that he has visited every Ethel. Some he had permission for and some he just bagged. When I did the challenge I did a mixture. The official Ethel App says the closest legal point unless you get permission is considereda bag. But I'm on the 88 Trig Point Challenge now so if you don't bag it, you haven't done it. If it wasn't for the Great Tresspass and Ethel Haythornthwaite we wouldn't be able to legally roam where we can today. Just interested on your take, but I think I know your answer. Whichever way you choose Joe, even the Pointless Ethels were an experience. Two that come to mind are Beeley Moor (Harland Edge) and Alport Moor. The best way to Alport Moor is from Snake Pass and the bog of doom. I've done it that way, which was certainly the quickest, and from Alport Castles end at Fairholmes. Now that was a slog. From that end you have exactly one mile of bog infested terrain each way. But there is no right or wrong way to hike The Ethel Challenge as long as you enjoy it, that's the main thing. Thanks for sharing Joe and I look forward to watching your journey.
Thank you. You are right, several are not on public access land. I think I will see how I feel when I get close see if I am happy with that or if a quick out and back to the summit is needed... the purpose of trying it is to make me explore parts lf the Peak ive never been to before and im sure it will lead me on many new adventures!
Excellent video Joe , Stanage edge the gateway to the Himalayas.
Great explanation 🤩
You didn't mention the Chemtrails in the sky behind you at the 35 min mark. They are destroying our atmosphere and our health. Avian bird flu anybody? Thats where it comes from.
Great video my friend, well done! Beautiful!
Thank you!
Epic! You captured some fantastic atmospherics on this hike. Along with some amazing scenery. Wonderful drone footage make this a superb video. Well done Joe. Top drawer stuff. Thanks for sharing this stunning walk with us. Good luck David
Thank you! Was a truly epic day!
I grew up there i could tell many story's.
Just beautiful I live in Shropshire my favourite walk. I also love Hope Bowdler and Caradoc on the other side. A wonderful area I'm so lucky to live in Shropshire.
I was looking at walking this part next time I head to Shropshire.
It's beautiful. Hope Bowdler and Willstone Hill Battlestones. I do this walk every month. Also a summit called The Yearlet on long Mynd. The views are amazing. Also Corndon Hill is lovely in Powys.
We are coming to the Lake District with friends at the beginning of June (from the Netherlands). come by boat to New Castle and then drive to our accommodation in Amblesite. I had already planned to make a stop to do this walk along the waterfalls. Now that I see this video, we will definitely do that, looking forward to it! regards
You will love it! Its absolutely superb!
Wow, this video makes me want to pack my bags and head to Yorkshire Dales ASAP! 🥾⛰ Janet's Foss looks so magical ✨ and Gordale Scar is seriously impressive 💪. Malham Cove looks epic, bummer it was so crowded though! Thanks for taking us on the adventure! 👍
Go out of season and its perfect! 😁
Literally only went to Malham and Gordale Scar last week on holiday. Such a wonderful place!
Lovely! I have memories of getting stuck behind 2 coaches trying to pass on the narrow entrance road 😂
I've been to Malham 4 times (from Vermont USA), always stay at the Lister Arms, lovely staff. The Old Barn has a delicious cream tea.
My favourite area in the Yorkshire Dales, some great locations to photograph. Enjoyed the video 👍
Sana ma-fell ... ling sa sinasakyang ...
Waterfalls are so mesmerising aren’t they. I loved this walk. God I hope I can recover enough to go hiking again one day. I’m missing the great outdoors so much. Got 6 months of chemo to endure first then a slow climb back to some level of fitness hopefully. In the meantime I am getting my fix by watching your videos. Thanks for sharing them Joe.
Slow and steady recovery. Keep safe
Beautiful place and nice video. I’ve wild camped there a few times which is stunning but you have to be careful the wild horses don’t come over and take an interest!
Excellent production 😊
Another great video, I always look forward to sitting down & watching your channel on a Friday evening. Keep up the good work👍
Thank you!
Brilliant video am doing my start of the walk come this Monday morning it nice to see different views of the wall from different people who have walked it..🎉
Thank you! Enjoy the hike! I loved it
I went up Fairfield then around to St Sunday Crag when I was a teenager, and discovered I have a fear of heights.
Not a good place to discover that but the ridge betwren the two is a little narrow with big drops!
It was definitely a bit hairy and scary. I recall having to do some downhill scrambling.
I’ve always thought of Ambleside as a town. Probably because of the hordes of people milling about.
I think I said village in the video but yes it is a town 👍
Great video! Love the drone footage
Delighted to have found this video. Really interesting and informative. Thanks
Breathtaking views! Thanks Joe!! (Out of hospital but still doing chemo and not able to walk much. Your videos are my escape! )
All the best and wishing you a speedy recovery
Spectacular drone footage of amazing mountains!! Thank you so much for sharing this Joe. You have the best channel on youtube!! All the best to you as always from Massachusetts!!😊🏔🌄🌲🌳
Thank you 😁
Fantastic 👍
Absolutely brilliant. Thanks Joe. Really enjoyed seeing the notated panoramas - they added another dimension which enhanced the whole experience.
Thank you! 😁
Absolutely stunning hike, Joe. The views and the weather were amazing. I think the snow flurries made it. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Lovely video thank you
Absolutely amazing walk!! 🤩 Those Lake District views are something else 😍 Looks like you got a lovely change in the weather too. I'm a bit jealous of that summit snack spot! Will definitely be adding Black Crag to my list 👍 Thanks for sharing the adventure!
They are mighty good for such a low peak!
Thanks again Joe, another brilliant video. Living in this area I know this walk very well, walking all and parts of it several times a year but have never seen it from the air before.
Camp
lovely video thanks Jo. Could you share a map of your route please
So sorry I dont have a map of this route. I explored the castle and then drove to the viewpoint
Nice walk ans views 😀 Comming from Australia know all about storm damage been terrible lately
Did this walk over Xmas and was a delight ns great view of Holme Fell. I walked from Tarn How's much easier
Definately was much more gentle on the way to Tarn Hows.
Really great hike in beautiful nature and ancient history, and well presented. Thanks! Actually the rainy, overcast weather showed what the resident Roman soldiers must have dealt with a lot of the time - takes us right back in time.
Lovely part of the world my friend!, well done!
Thank you!
