    Hi Jim. New student here. There is one part of this lesson where I can't figure out what your picking hand is doing. It's the 3 consecutive slides at around 1:33. It sounds to me like you're plucking either the 2nd or 3rd string in sync with the end of the slide rather than just letting the end of the slide hold the note . You didn't say you were plucking a string at that point but it sure sounds like it to my ears. Am I hearing a pluck where there ain't one?

    Hey Jim, great story on your Stelling; that's the first one I've seen without "Stelling" inlaid in the peghead! In 1986 travelled from Australia to Jamestown TN for a festival there and met Clyde Blaylock there ... I'd left my capo back in Melbourne and he took pity on me and very generously gave me a capo which I have and use to this day. Clyde introduced me to Sonny Osborne at breakfast under the awning of his RV ... great memories for me.

    So to avoid getting spiked, do you just use it as an open string?

    • @nmitchell076
      @nmitchell076 Před 4 dny

      Yeah, that string is typically used as an open drone in most playing. You can play professionally in both old time and bluegrass styles and never ever fret that string. Of course there are some (one might say "progressive") players who do fret that string, but they are typically playing at such a high level of mastery that they know their instrument set up and don't have to worry about an unexpected jab to the fingers.

    • @nmitchell076
      @nmitchell076 Před 4 dny

      (Note that there aren't spikes on every fret, just a few to handle the most common capo positions / retunings. So if you are playing higher on the neck, you don't have to worry about it)

    • @nmitchell076
      @nmitchell076 Před 4 dny

      Oh, also, the lowest and highest strings sound in unison (under most common tunings at least) if you fret them at the same place on the neck. Which is one reason why you don't need to fret it: you can get the same note usually by just fretting the bottom string.

    • @JimPankey
      @JimPankey Před 4 dny

      If you don’t want to install spikes there are other options available - none that work as well imo.

    • @JimPankey
