Thanks Jim. I’ve been fascinated with clawhammer since i saw your country blues clip 17 years ago. Your my hero.
Thanks Jim. This is great! I finished the first 10 lessons, which I'm still going over and I came across this video which fits right along with everything you have been teaching. This is really great! You are the best! Thank you for sharing your love for the banjo and enabling me to grow in my love for the banjo too! ❤
I play banjo in a rock cover band. The idea of "chasing the melody note" is incredibly helpful. Thanks!
I appreciate your enthusiasm and teaching style, Jim! Thanks for the very practical lesson!
Jimbo, this is the good stuff. This is exactly what beginners who know a few breaks and want to start jamming need to hear. Love it. It's also excellent advice for playing great banjo backup.
Thanks Jim! I really appreciate these 'big picture' videos lately. They're very helpful as I try to get away from relying on tabs so heavily!
Fantastic way to explain concept. Thank you so much! this is a game changer for the way I approach banjo.
Great video! About a year ago I started playing at jams and playing at small gigs with a little band and this is the exact method I use to get through many breaks. And basically each time I play a different gig I try to find one or two more melody notes to make it better.
You have really helped me through so much. I had never played a banjo up until a few months ago and you have really helped me and you are inspirational. Thank you from England. 😊
Jim, I love all your videos. You have a great way of presenting them and halp us to be able to learn it.
Thank you for all you do.
Sincerely
I really enjoy your videos, I just recently decided to start learning to play, and you’re my teacher. Thanks 🙏
Thank you! This is great information. I had sort of figured this out as I tried to learn new songs by ear but didn't understand what I was doing. With your explanation now I have the tools to develop a song.
This is such a great lesson Jim!!! Thank you so much for helping us all learn to play this great instrument!!!
Hey Jim,
This is great!, Always puzzled about how experienced banjo players were able to just jump into a song they never learned. This video is the KEY!!. Thanks so much!.
You’re a great teacher, I really want to learn bluegrass banjo!! Thank you for excellent content!!
Excellent analysis Jim. Really eye-opening. Most of the important notes especially in a Bluegrass song are going to be chord tones and if we know how to deal with each of those we are halfway home
I'm starting to be able to play some that actually sounds like playing thanks Jim
Jim Pankey is the Mr. Miagi of Banjo playing. You wanna play a new song, Wax on, Wax off. Need a good break, paint the fence. Use what you know, he says. Brilliant!!
thanks Jim - luvit - am an 86 year old beginner - slow going but staying with it - truly enjoy your tutorials - keep em coming
You have a great an unique teaching style teaching very useful and often used techniques. Thank you!
Hi Jim I just want to say thanks for all your videos, I never would of learned to play without them! I've been struggling to find a version of wild mountain thyme that i can wrap my head around and this video has inspired me to try and figure something out on my own! Thanks again and slàinte mhath from Scotland.
Mad cool I love your teachings.. And I love the way you always bend to the camera😁😁🤓…🪕🪕🪕
Jim thank you so much ,you have helped me go from ,shouldn’t even spell Banjo to being able to play a few songs and I’m growing everyday with your help.thank you for doing what you do.
Thanks Jim you always give me things to think about I am keeping a little note book
Hi Jim , from UK . Your lessons are inspirational! I had tried for a couple of years to learn “Home Sweet Home” with no success.. I followed your superb tuition and mastered it within two weeks !11 amazing . Thank you Jim 👍😎🪕
Thanks Jim this is a really great video, rather than just memorizing songs this lesson gives me the chance to actually jam with a guitar player and just make it up as I go along. I find this type of teaching really boosts my confidence and improves my righthand picking.. you're an excellent teacher.. I have recommended your lessons to other novice banjo players that I've met.
Just getting started with banjo and injoying it. Got to say its harder than it looks.Your videos are great. Your a talented player and a good teacher. Wish I could take direct lessons from you.
wow i know the last comment in the video was "it probably wasn't a huge breakthrough breakthrough" however this has taken a lot of repetitive cords and hours of picking and showed how they can be brought together. thanks for the content here on youtube. in a weird way i feel like the lessons are in person because you talk normal and honest. im still working my way through the beginner lessons at the moment. really enjoying the experience, especially because this is my first instrument iv ever tried to learn. keep up the good work!
Boy Jim I could really use anything to learn to play Banjo even if it takes cheating!! Lol I’m still learning & struggling. L😅ve watching you & your videos. Thanks a bunch keep ‘em coming!
Thank you Jim! I have played off and on for years. All your video’s really helped me progress. A song I would like to learn is Foggy Mountain Top. Thanks again you are a great teacher.
Jim, great stuff as always. You're like the Bob Ross of Banjo 😀...PBS should give you a show and call it the Joy of Banjo! 🪕
hey jim, still progressing thanks to all your videos! Have you ever considered doing a lesson covering Down on the Levee by John Hartford? I really love that song but coming up with rolls to match the slower, bouncier rhythm seems hard. Thanks for the lessons
Hey Jim, Thank You! Are there any videos out there where you just played along in a jam session with a song, like you described? Love to watch! Thanks again
I’m a fiddle player and have stood across from a bunch of banjo pickers at jams here in NC watching their playing. It seems like alot are doing just this.
Thanks again Jim. I really only jam with my brothers a couple times a year when we all get together but it’s fun to start learning the banjo and bring that into the mix because they are such great guitar players and I always feel inadequate. And it’s helped with my finger picking. Gotta go work on my tags !!! Later Gator
@@JimPankey Thank you . As you can see I will be dead and gone before I can snatch the pebble from your hand 🤣
Can you do a cord arrangement for the song rich men north of Richmond.that would be beautiful.
Hey Jim, can you teach Johnny Horton's "North to Alaska"? I've lived up here 24 years, and it would be great to play to my friends!
Excellent concept and ideas! Probably would be a plus to demonstrate at least three different tag licks to go along with this lesson too, as they can treat the ear to even more of a feeling that its "different".
I’ve done a couple of ending videos in the past and have covered it a bit in some of the live streams.
@@JimPankey Ahhhhh, I just watched it, nice! Its the "getting tired of same solo's lesson". Thats the real beans man. Thanks!
Could you pleeeaase make a tutorial on zach bryan - Quiting time??? I need to learn it! And i learn better when i watch your videos:)
I’ve got a question I’m trying to learn cuckoo’s nest and I was wondering if you could make a video on it please
Sub'd. I have never played an instrument but it looks like a blast. Lmao😊
@JimPankey I'm gonna work on it. Just gotta get a cheap banjo to start with. I'm a medically retired veteran and I'm currently starting a mushroom company. To help people with ailments that can be assisted naturally. We have a dog that was diagnosed with cancer a few weeks ago. A couple weeks ago we had to have his leg amputated. But anyway, long story short, we've ran through our savings after spending almost $20k on vet bills. But I'll get one eventually. Then I'll start a CZcams channel. Involving both. Different niche for sure. But I'll be using your videos to learn. Thanks for doing what you do!
Been trying to bluegrassify a folk tune a couple of friends want me to learn on banjo and found this really helpful! Thank you so much! Do you have any tips for playing scruggs style in 3/4 btw?
Happy to help! I don’t have a lot out here for 3/4, but you should be able to pull some ideas from here: All the Good Times are Past and Gone - Walk Through and Demo

Dixieland tutorial series on the banjo??
Hey Jim what roll are you playing for all of these, I can't tell? I'm just starting to play and would love to just get this down so I could just play background with the guys jamming here. I should have picked an easier instrument to play but I love banjos. ;-) Greetings from Florida!
Great lessons Jim! Made sense to comment on the most recent video. I'm currently learning cripple creek. Can anyone clear up for me how many time I play through the low part then high from lesson 4
Just picked up my Banjo after several weeks of being too busy and you pop up how do you do that you Jim
Can you make a video on Charleston girl by Tyler Childers?
hey jim and chat... Hitting my first open mic night this week. Have yall got any things to avoid what's the deal. What can i expect ?
Hi. Just wondering what fingering you are using for that down the neck B chord in Old Home Place?
Thanks for your reply. Possible to check at minute 11:20-11.25?
Yup... full shape would be 4201... but I'm not fretting the 4th string there
hi how are you can you tell me how can i get this for a musical instrument i like it so much
Jim
Would you send me the tabs for your tag in lesson. Play any break with these 3 licks. Thanks
I didn't create tabs for this lesson as they're licks that you should already know if you've been playing banjo for even a couple of months.
Yam panicky y’all.
Hii how are you
Please Re-do reuben?🥺
Nope. If you’re ready for it you shouldn’t have a problem sorting it out from what I’ve posted.
Use a wider angled camara. So you dont need to lean in.
What’s the fun in that??? Furthermore, this gives you more banjo in the frame.
Just fixed my banjo that’s been sitting stringless in the corner for a decade… yeah, it’s helpful!
Glad I could help
