Elephant Butte Meetup, June 2024
Oldest daughter Sharon rented a VRBO in Elephant Butte, New Mexico. She invited youngest daughter, Chloe and me to join her. Shogo, Chloe's SO, and John, Sharon's husband, and Nolan, Sharon's son, would also be there. We'd spend four nights at the VRBO. Our activities would include some off-road travels, lake fun, and visiting a museum and wine vineyard. I would also take in a few sights along the way there and home. While most of the trip is documented with still photos, the travel along a section of the New Mexico Backcountry Discovery Route (NMBDR) to Chloride Canyon is all video. It begins at 2:38.

You got some good cattle guard footage on that one. I though that only I did that. Some pretty cool terrain again. Thanks for sharing! George.
@@swidahooverlanding2867 I think it was the 2017 solar eclipse where I mounted a camera on the front bumper, pointed down, as I crossed a cattle guard on the way up Hat Point Rd. A nice thing about solo travel is I can spend more time shooting odd camera angles. Usually the folks I travel with are quite accommodating, but I don't ask as much as I might like to do if by myself.
@@DxDOverland We honk at all cattle guards. It is a old family tradition. Lets the trolls know we are coming so they can let go of the cross beams before we drive over their fingers. Turns out cattle guards are spaced well on long boring stretches to keep the video scenery going. Never have caught a troll on video though.
When I was a kid, we used to yell out "Jinx joke! You owe me a Coke! 1-2-3!" at every cattle crossing. I taught that to my youngest daughter, so we did that a lot during our travels. Never did see anyone get that Coke though.
got here from defiant offroad. great series! looks awesome out there!
@@rexkramer7339 Thanks for letting me know. Will and I are trying to work out meeting for real. Perhaps in the near future. There's quite a bit of content on the channel (I've been at this a few years). If you're looking for something in particular, don't hesitate to ask.
What great scenery out there! Bummer about the tire, but I'm glad you got back up and running quickly.
New Mexico is a really pretty state. And only lightly traveled. If we'd continued through Chloride Canyon and up over the Continental Divide, we'd have been in the Gila National Forest. I have three other video series exploring that area, including my two past attempts to cross the divide. One was not possible due to deep snow along the route. The other was stopped a short ways before the rock art when my Jeep engine water pump spilt its guts. Fortunately we were able to have one of the other folks run to TorC and pick up a water pump and coolant and swap the pump in the field. However, the delay was long enough that we elected to revert to mostly paved roads to get back into the national forest where we could camp. As for the tire, fortunately I have two second spares, both mounted to rims, for the Wrangler and Gladiator. And the spare we mounted had only slight wear. Since I do drive off pavement a lot, I replace tires pretty early ... well before they are down to the treadwear indicators. So, not really any financial hit. The only question is how I'm going to handle the conversion over to KO IIIs, since that's been in the back of my mind when I get new tires for the Wrangler (by end of year, I expect). Do I buy five tires, and use an old KO II only as a second spare (in the rare case I decide I need to carry one), or buy four KO IIIs (and use KO IIs as all four spare tires)?
This was well put together, or is that put together well? No... I didn't notice the wiper either.
Thank you, Ron.
Great adventures, thank you so much for sharing!
You're welcome and thanks for watching.
Great video series. Thanks for sharing and the work you do make these possible.
And thank you very much for watching and commenting. Always appreciated.
Like, Look, and Listen. Easy. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
Thank you much. Glad you liked it.
Sooo. at 4:41 there is that shelf road. What is the significance of the road? Was there industry out there? That looks like it took some effort and money to complete. Does it go anywhere other than the canyon? Excellent video and series Mark!
According to the Butler Motorcycle Map, that is BIA Road 6150. It is one of the ones that you add to your travel permit purchased in Cameron. The map info is a bit misleading, since it says to buy the permit before heading north from Cameron. Which is after you've already traveled on 6150 if you're headed south to north. It connects up to Hwy 64, or if you take one of the alternate routes, it is bringing you down from the national forest area that we had camped in the preceding night. We didn't see any industry--but the views, headed north on the AZBDR like we were, are just incredible.
Thanks for sharing this great trip.
Thanks for watching, Jeff.
Very excellent!
Thanks, Nigel, glad that you enjoyed it.
Seems like this series just started. Thanks for sharing. Lots of fun, adventure and cool places to see. George.
Thanks, George.
Wow, this is the perfect trip! I wish I would have known. Plenty of vacation piled up. Is this an annual thing? I'm in TX.
Yes, the AZBDR is a great adventure. This was my first time traveling with this group. They do regular trips together, but various places around the country. As for me, I travel with a variety of small groups from around the country as they invite me along.
Watched part 1 and part 2. Excellent stories, scenery, rigs and the trials and triumphs along your adventures. Again thanks for sharing. Just found your channel, really cool and love that had had your wrangler for so long. 89’ YJ myself.
Awesome. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and letting me know!
good to know, I was worried you were harming baby chicks to make these videos. Thanks for clarifying.
LOL.
Fine, fine work my friend! I look forward to our next trip!
Thanks, Steve, and I do too. Hope that isn't too much longer!
Great series. Enjoyed it very much, I know so little about Arizona. It's the little things I notice now. I was watching with someone else and immediately hit pause... "Look... see that water container on that stepladder?? This is the guy I got the idea from." She said I need more practice on my "siphon hose" technique. I must pay attention.....
Have to LOL at the siphon hose practice comment. Thanks for watching and commenting, Ron. Enjoyed reading that.
Just stumbled upon your video and it looks so awesome. What a wonderful adventure. Thank you for sharing.
You are quite welcome. Warning: There are many more if you browse around. Do be careful. ;-)
Thank you Sir, I really enjoyed this series, as usual!
It delights me to read that. Thanks much!
Another great series of videos. I recognized a few places familiar, but found out there is a lot more to see. Thanks for the inspiration. And thanks for the credit for the missing maps comment!!!
You are welcome, Jean. I'm glad you pointed that out to me so I could make it better!
Amazing stories thanks for sharing.
You're welcome, and thank you for watching and commenting.
thanks for doing these Mark, I have enjoyed it just like all the rest that I have viewed.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Terry.
Another great series of trip videos! I’ll carry 2 Scepter 2.5 gallon water cans (plus spout and cap wrench) secured under a shelf where the back seat would’ve been mounted in my TJ manual Rubicon. Plus several Nalgene bottles & US canteen w/cup in the footwell behind the driver’s seat. Two bottles of water in the cup holders behind the console and a case/flat of water in the front pax seat footwell. Those Scepter water cans are durable.
Sounds like a great plan. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Another nice series again, congratulations!!!!
Thank you much!
What an awesome trip! The video series is <almost> as good as actually being on the trip. :) It was a pleasure adventuring with you again. Looking forward to our next outing.
Thanks, Adam, and me too!
Good series, thank you everyone that travelled on this trip. Good job Mark!
Thank you!
That was great, Mark! I am already missing being there with you guys. I still can't believe that we couldn't find that antenna :)
Thanks, Roy. It was a wonderful adventure.
Wow! Another great wrap up to our adventure! So good having you along Mark. Thanks again for documenting the great time we all had! :)
Thanks. Dan. It was certainly a pleasure for me.
Steering in mud "general suggestions". That is hilarious
The road/view at 11:05 is amazing. Perfectly smooth road with cool clouds
We did have some nice sky interest for photography on most days of the trip. As for smooth roads, however, not so much. ;-)
My kind of weather for back country travel. Cloudy with a slight chance of rain. Keeps the dust down and the roads interesting. Just got back from a adventure. No rain but the road was interesting... Thanks! George.
Interesting roads are good. Make for good photography.
@@DxDOverland For sure. I don't take too many photo's anymore with a dedicated camera. Just my phone.
You guys move way faster than I would through those rocks sections. Makes my teeth hurt. Thanks for the video! George.
It was a bit fast. We had an ambitious schedule to keep. Normally I'd prefer a bit slower pace.
@@DxDOverland Good to hear. I was afraid you might fine my pace a bit too slow.
@@swidahooverlanding2867 Nah, we'll be fine. When I travel with a group as an invitee, I do my best to comply with their routine. Looking forward to our upcoming plans.
Nice camera angles on the rocky curve. Thanks.
Thanks, Jeff.
There were some real nice overlanding Jeeps reviewed, nice work again!!!!!!
Ah shucks, thanks. :-)
That was a great recap, Mark! Great outtakes at the end :)
Thanks much, Roy. For me creating these, it's like taking the trip a second time.
It's just amazing of all the different terrains you pass through! great adventure!
Truly amazing. Arizona is a much more than desert.
Gorgeous sunrise at the start! 👍
Thank you, Bob. That was five minutes of video sped-up to 10 seconds*. When I saw the clouds were actually very slowly moving--in opposite directions!--I wish I'd shot much longer. *Sound was shot during that five minutes, though obviously not sped-up.
Really good piece!
Thanks for all the hard work, Mark!
You're welcome, Roy. Thanks for having me tag along, and for your excellent products that are included in the videos.
What a fun looking time! Every time I see one of your videos from out there, it makes me want to head west more and more.
You definitely need to; great times being had out that way!
@@DxDOverland one day!
Nice video. Just don’t quit your day job and become a singer. lol
Definitely will not. LOL.
This was a fun trip! Thanks for making these videos of our adventure Mark.
I had a great time, Adam. Thanks for having me along.
Thanks again for posting. Enjoyed the video.
You're welcome, Jeff. Part 3 should be up tomorrow morning early.
Los tiempos más mejores señor, gracias a todos.
Great times indeed!
Did you get a new Jeep? if so, where's the introduction video?
I've had the 2020 Gladiator four years now, and had it out on a number of trips. Its first one, where I discuss it, was the Big Bend Explorations, January 2020 trip. A few other good trips to see it in action include El Camino del Diablo, February 2020; A Gathering of Wanderers, September-October 2022; Merus Winter Adventure, December 2023; and West Utah Winter Adventure, February-March 2024. It has also been on less-extended trips around Oklahoma during that time.
More great terrain. Thanks for sharing! George.
And it seems to just keep getting better. Thanks for watching, George.
Fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Andrè. You're very welcome.
Those low water crossings are horrifying on a motorcycle. I don't overland, but do ride back country on a motorcycle. Can't stand them. Most awful things ever. My preference is to walk them on foot first, and maybe even just walk the bike with a hand on the throttle. Looks so much easier in a car. If you haven't tried it, give a look to the Tony Hugel Heart of the West Route. I've ridden almost all of it. Just outstanding. Even better than the BDRs I've done.
I'll have to ask the fellows traveling with me about that route. Most of them are also ADV bike riders. I rode in a past life ,(in California, Thailand, Mississippi from 1967-82), but long story short: When I retired from USAF, had to get an Oklahoma driver's license. Had motorcycle on my California license, but I needed to take the written test. I hadn't studied for it,. nor had I ridden since living in Biloxi, MS 14 years earlier, so I let it go. Now I'd have to do the six months learner's permit, etc, and at 74 I'm not the same young fellow I once was. Four wheels suits me fine.
Another great video! Thanks again for your efforts documenting the team's trip! :)
You're welcome, Dan. Thanks for inviting me along.
The outtake at the end was funny.
Glad you enjoyed it. ;-)
Thanks for another great video Mark!
And thanks for watching and commenting, Mike.
Brings back memories Mark! I did the AZ BDR several years ago with two friends. One of the best trips I've ever done. Funny the comment about the Mexican side by the border looks better than the American side. I thought the same thing as we went by.
That's got to be rough on a bike. We saw some bikers the first couple days, but one of them was struggling a bit. We never did see them in the latter part of the trip. They may have opted for the main route when we were on an alternate. Hopefully they accomplished their goal. Anyway, hat's off to you, Bob, for your success.
