    My friend Matt, from Flagstaff, Arizona, invited several folks along on an adventure to take in the Transcontinental Railroad Backcountry Byway, and the Pony Express National Historical Trail. This would include Tad from Hood River, Oregon; and Travis from Grand Junction, Colorado. It would be a rather quick trip along these two routes. However, due to sickness in the family, it turned out that Travis could not make it.
    And, as usual for my overlanding adventures, I’d make the trip more than just the main event. This was an opportunity for me to visit with my daughter, Chloe, who lives in Albuquerque. And I had two Canadian friends, Jean and Nancy, who would be in southern Utah, and they were interested in doing a small run together. So, I tossed in a visit to the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History in Albuquerque, and a drive out to Muley Point in Utah as a part of a more expanded trip. In Salt Lake City, I’d also meet up with Matt at the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum. And even during the return home, an incoming blizzard would provide some challenges. Join us on DxD Overland as we explore more of this amazing country. Part 1 covers the trip from OKC to Muley Point.

    Just another day at the office... good to see you "back at work" on productions. Must feel good to be up and running again. Thanks for sharing with all of us.

      It certainly is. I not only have this series to finish out, but also the solar eclipse. So, expect some releases in relatively short order (but no TAT finish, if you saw me mention that before).

      There is certainly a lot in Utah worth exploring. But then you have Idaho, which is pretty nice too!

    Looks like a new rig for you Mark. Beautiful shots of Monument Valley! Sorry about the loss of your friend.

      Thanks, Bob. That's the same Gladiator I took on some of my other trips. But it's more like backpacking (or even riding a motorcycle) since I have none of the luxury overlanding appurtenances that the Wrangler has (fridge, large stove, etc).

    Solid closing with the TJ and hula girl (I might be slightly…biased 😂).

      @@JMdfcv Yes. Good catch. It was shown previously in the UT-WYO-IDA video series, which is when Matt and I met Dean. We'd travel together with him on several other adventures.

    Enjoyed the scenic switchback shelf road drive, though I'd need to install a driver ejection seat. Prefer low altitude desert canyon trails where primary risk is getting stuck in sand.

    • @DxDOverland
      @DxDOverland  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I make a nervous passenger on such roads. But I'm okay if driving. And there are some great views along the way, with several spots to stop and take them in.

    • @DxDOverland
      @DxDOverland  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Oh, BTW, in a prior series years ago, you can see me get stuck at one of those switchbacks when my engine overheated. That was a long-running problem I mentioned in videos over a couple years period. It was there at that switchback that I had an epiphany. I tapped a relay mod I'd made and my cooling fan started running. When I got home, I swapped the relay out and cut open the old one, confirming what that epiphany has suggested right at that switchback. Carbon build-up on the relay contacts was the problem all along.

    Nice video! The overlook shots were amazing. I need to make it down to that area soon.
    Quick question. Now you’ve had the Gladiator for a while. If (heaven forbid) something happens to your Wrangler, would you be happy with just the Gladiator?

    • @DxDOverland
      @DxDOverland  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks, Paul. I was delighted that Jean and Nancy suggested a brief trip out to Muley Point as a part of my trip to Utah. As for the Gladiator replacing the Wrangler: What a great question. Of course, the Gladiator is not set up like the Wrangler at all. I've chosen to use it in a more overlanding light mode. Perhaps best thought of as limiting myself somewhat like a backpacker or an adventure motorcyclist. That's partly out of a desire to showcase a different approach to overlanding than the overbuilt rig. But also because I find working out of a pickup to be awkward at best. That is, reaching over the sides, even before I had the bed rack, to retrieve gear was difficult. And a drawer system would reduce a primary purpose I had for buying a pickup: Using it as a pickup to haul stuff at times. And drawers also reduce the usability of one of the main advantages of a pickup over an SUV with a swingout tailgate: A large, very convenient table surface when the tailgate is down. That would be because to retrieve gear in one of the drawers would mean I have to shift gear out of the way that is on the tailgate. That would be awkward, say, if I was cooking on the tailgate but I needed a spatula behind the stove. Also, gear in the bed, even though I have a tonneau cover, gets dusty. It's unavoidable. I have far less problem with that in the Wrangler (even though mine is so old that it preceded the cabin air filter). So, while the Gladiator is very civilized to drive compared to the Wrangler, I'd probably look at JL Wrangler. Well, unless I won the lottery, then I might be tempted by an Ineos Grenadier. I must admit, I do like the classic appearance of them.
