This Just Saved Us âŹ2000 on Our Old Stone Cabin Renovation
This week we found a way to save over âŹ2k on our old stone cabin renovation! đ€© Say whaaat??! Building our own home as amateur DIY-ers always results in challenges, & budget control is a constant battle as we transform our abandoned farm stone house.
Quotes for custom-made shutters for our cute cottageâs 3 little windows blew the budget for this building project right out of the water, so we calculated what it would cost if we did it ourselves & were pleasantly surprisedâŠ.albeit a bit daunted!
So like most jobs here, weâre going DIY & creating our own bespoke wooden shutters - but we werenât prepared to compromise on style or quality! Well, after decades of neglect, this old abandoned cabin only deserves the best right?! đ But if we were going to pull this project off, weâd need to do some tricky calculations, precision woodworking & have patience by the bucketload! đ Wish us luck! (Confidence going into the projectâŠ.50/50!)

I just found your channel a couple of days ago and yâall are so genuine and sweet together. Great design on your work table â€
THEY ARE EXCELLENT, PERFECT IN EVERYTHING THEY DO. I'LL LEAVE 1 TIP, FOR LARGE ROCKS YOU CAN DRILL IT WITH 1 DRILL LIKE THE ONE YOU USED, AND AFTER THE HOLE IS DONE, ADD EXPANSIVE CEMENT AND IT WILL BREAK WITHOUT EFFORT, IT'S NOT EXPENSIVE. HUGS
I really enjoy your Openings, s one !
Having just found your channel today, I have been following along with excitement and awe. WOW! You two are amazing. How on earth do you know how to do all these things, like a roof, cement work, etc.??? You are so impressive. â€â€â€
Are there really 4 unavailable videos ?
I have found your videos only recently but it takes me ages to find out which ones I have now watched, Can you please number them in order. I am an oldie with modern technology but I really love the videos especially as I have been watching quite a few each day, Thanks for sharing. Joan from Morecambe.
Great job on the work bench!!!
It's looking great, nice job.
My all time favorite couple to watch! Youâre doing an amazing job!
What a lovely channel! Be careful of the snakes around stone areas! Especially vipers!
Is there any reason why you didn't dig the pit any deeper? All you effectively did was "remove the grass", but you didn't really dig a pit. Wouldn't it be preferable to have a deeper pit, so the surrounding earth "isolates" the heat? Also, can you just have fires anytime you want? I heard from other PT/ES CZcamsrs that they had to get "fire licences" and things like that.
Omg, it looks amazing guys!!! Congratulations!!!
When harvesting potatoes it is best to treat them like eggs... fragile. Place them gently in the bucket. Don't throw them. Any bruising caused by heavy handling risks early rot in storage. Being gentle avoids bruising.
I just found your channel today and love every minute of it! You guys are doing such a great job!
I love watching you two at work âŁïž
Hi Ricky and Victoria, I have gone back to the beginning of your journey. Victoria where were you? Ricky you look very young and fresh now you look young and experienced. I continue to enjoy watching both of you and the dogs.. FYI I am currently watching Ricky fencing.
The shutters look fantastic đđđ
Guest house? I thought you were making your home.
Make the holes bigger so dowels can slide into holes better.
That fake hand bit was hilarious!
You both are adorable! Sending love from Brazil â€
My Husband & I worked and lived an intergrated life of being close to the land while combining office work. After some years we were able to retire from the rat race and live a farm style life. Our children grew up with a farm style life and to this day say it was a great childhood. They have all opt for a less stress, complicated lifestyle. It is possible to do it but it takes hard physical labor which lessen with time. As you get the fundamentals down. Also the building structures, fields etc once completed usually no longer require major repairs/construction, only minor. We found our later lives with the time to enjoy our hobbies and fun stuff. Hang in there Victoria & Ricky. â€ïž
Wow. Well done.
Fair play that was a very courageous move . What was your jobs in England ? Ye have done a marvellous work on the cottage. Best of luck in the future
A dig bar helps on rocky soil, I have dug many a fence post in the mountains.
One dowel per slat and a dab of glue would have saved a lot of hours of tedious work.
Even when cutting the grooves by hand with a chisel, it would habe been faster and less tedious than using dowels...
You did an amazing job.
tried a couple of times to pass this tip on. Try turning the ends of the ends of the dowling to a sloping point on one side of it. this way you will be able to fit 1 into hole the 2 , 3 etc. from one end only. don't try to fit all in one go
Your channel is growing, well deserved growth
small piece of advice, use hearing protectors when sanding and sawing
Well done, the first try in aything always takes more time. Happy days
I'm from Solomon Islands,,,very impressive indeed what you've done....
â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€
Today my wife makes me in bad mood, luckily I found your channel and truly makes me better. I love the way you works, laugh, and smile guys đ
Ricky is just a trooper.. well done you two.
The shutters look fabulous! Thanks for always sharing your wisdom and humor. â€
Nice job! Stain and varnish.be beautiful. Brown
When you do a job with a lot of dust, wear swim googles. You look silly, but who cares. I use them when I cut up onions. They keep the stinging fuses out of my eyes.
Would it be possible if the dowels were cut gradually shorter to one side?
I laughed at your lovely your comment 'Pealicious, Pealightful', ha ha. Victoria you are on a roll, ha ha. Always a good idea if something is not working out, leave come back the next day. Wow!! that shutter is just wow!! for never have made a shutter before you guys nailed it. Congratulations!! Victoria and Rick they are awesome. Better slowly but surely. Have a lovely day.
You should make this your main house, not the guest house
Loved the video and great work guys. Those shutters are a work of art. Will you put fly screen on the back to stop critters getting in? Would love to have those on our house but our windows open outwards.
Making the edges of wood smoother can be done easier with a hand planer. And no dustđ. Keep it up, youâre doing a great job togetherđ.
So Amazing! Y'all did good..đ
Wonât that level the roads!
I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but have you thought of putting a small corner sink in the shower?
