The concrete ring beam...a great idea for the safety & longevity of the tiny stone house, but it ended up being a much more time consuming task than either of us amateurs anticipated! Not only did it put the cottage renovation project behind schedule, it also created a lot more future work as we wanted to conceal it with stone. Unfortunately that idea had to be left by the wayside as we try to claw back some precious time & get back on track!
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it & SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Central Portugal & the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone home, setting up systems to grow some of our own food & finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
Ricky & Victoria x
-------------
We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

I think you're doing a brilliant job! Brambles are a pain if you don't have a goat or two. Any neighbors with goats? In the U.S. there are actually farmers with goats who rent them out to clear land. They bring the goats early in the morning, let them loose to clear the land, collect them at the end of the day and take them home. Easy peasy!
the wonderful thing about getting sheeps or goats, you'll be running into people who can give you great advice and also probably know the people who would look after your animals for you. you got to love animal people!!!
You two are hilarious with your corny jokes. Your videos seem to go by in a few minutes! I even replay them in case l fell asleep and missed a bit. Today’s episode was no different; gone in a flash. I love watching everything you do, especially the scenes with Teddy and Poppy. Thanks for sharing your lives with us. Jill in South Australia. 🌈🏠🦋🐈❤️
Thanks Jill! Maybe Teddy & Poppy need their own channel - let’s face it, they’re the stars of the show (and rightly so!) 😊
I still don't understand what the rush is to get to renovating the large house? Watching the tiny house come to life has been absolutely wonderful, if you want stone work, take the time to do stonework. Whatever solution you choose to do, ask yourself if it is what you want to look at for the next 50 years, an extra month or two is nothing in the long term view. If you are worried about content, I honestly think we would watch you put together a month long stone puzzle, you are both engaging and your videos are so well crafted.💖
If you saw our current living set up you’d understand why we want the tiny house done asap!😁
@@LifebyLiving Got it, behind the scenes issues are fueling the decision! Thanks so much for the reply, I hope everything comes together as smoothly as possible on the tiny house so that you can soon be more comfortable in your day to day living. We lived without running water for a long time while building our house, it's livable but dealing with some inconveniences can become exhausting over time.
I am following this channel from the very beginning. You have started it off amazingly well and the channel grew even better. Not just work that it is done on your property, but also the quality of the videos. This is one of the best channels l could find on CZcams. Another one is Dan and his chateau in France and campsite in Wales.
Well done both of you. Beautiful homestead indeed.
Thank you for the lovely comment & coming along for the journey! 😊
Victoria you are working so hard! Maybe invest in a good second hand tractor mower ? Doing all that land with a streamer is a very difficult, time consuming exercise. It would be well worth it on so large a property. The roof is brilliant and Ricky is such a perfectionist. His work is immaculate! You are right about delaying having sheep. They are quite a responsability and depending on people is not always recommended.
Go talk to the local vet, he/she may know someone who will board any animals you might get. Go to the local high school and see if any kids there would be interested in doing it for a bit of spending money. Just a thought.
I know how they feel, after covid now I lost my boarder vet, vet tech, groomer, pet sitter etc. It is crazy even now 4 yrs later as covid continues to really change our lives. I no longer have animal trainers for our puppies. They all quit or moved away. I can only trust myself to be there for my animals. Thankfully we have our vet and ER vet. Most bills now average over $1000+. 😢😢
@@Shibalvr it got like that here in my part of the USA but now it's reversed direction and things seem to be more umm "sane" leaning and reasonable with more opportunities 🤞🤞 tentative but hopeful
@@Shibalvr. I hope you aren’t breeding!
Sometimes the office vet techs will take care of your creatures while you’re gone. The extra spending money helps.
My vet tech used to be my boarding person at my vet. But she moved and started her own business at home, not the same set up or distance. Not sure if she does boarding. She does nails, glands, and has a vet who comes in certain days. She did an ear infection for us. Slightly less cost than regular vet. My dogs are all old and need major work most times. Big bucks. Teeth cleanings and spay and neuter cost an arm and leg. Hoping to find low cost spay day at Humane Society. They are a little busy this year with Lahaina Fire rescues! Lucky I have some pet insurance to help on the major bills except teeth and spay.
It is lovely seeing how you respect the property as well as the buildings. You take good care of your Olives and other trees. That can be a full time job. The tiny house is looking really nice. Great job on the tiles and insulation. Bravo
Thank you 💛 There’s always so much to learn about how to care for the land but little by little we’re getting there!
Ricky is just a trooper.. well done you two.
Ha!.... love the way commenters want you to inconvenience yourself and go to a lot more trouble and expense.... just so they can sit back and watch you restore YOUR property the way THEY want it done.....!!!
SOOO CZcams.......!
...it's what keeps me coming back....
..er, and you guys....obvs...!!!
😁 we understand that people have their opinions & it might not be what they would do in this situation but we’re not doing anything radical. We can go 10 minutes in any direction from our place & see multiple stone houses where they’ve done the same thing. Like you say, that’s CZcams though & you can’t please everyone!
It's beginning to look like a proper home with the roof back on. You're both doing really well in your jobs around the property. Have a good week ahead xxxx
Thanks Gaynor! ❤ We are so happy to have the roof back on the house 😅
You are a hard working couple and I admire your tenacity.
thanks Pamela!
I absolutely love your videos, you two. My only wish is that they were longer. Keep up the fabulous work. The tiny house is looking mighty handsome. Cheers from Norway!
You know what would be fun? When your ready for furniture and fixtures..thrifting! It would fun and a challenge.
we used to thrift a lot of furniture in the UK! We always got bargains on mid century designer stuff however it's just not really a big thing here. People tend to hold onto things & when they do sell it's always overpriced (in our opinion)
Hi Rickie & Victoria, wishing you a HNY from Swansea, Wales. Thanks for the enjoyment you’ve provided for viewers in 2023, and lookingforward to watching your project progressing through 2024. Diolch yn Fawr both. Paul 👍👍
Thanks Paul! Happy New Year to you too! 🥳
Beautiful videography, great music overlay, all interspersed with enthusiasm, effort and skill. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Dave! Appreciate the kind words & glad you enjoyed the video 😊
It makes sense working on the renovation of this smaller house...looking forward to seeing the interior work.😊
Have watched you both since the beginning! You are both such hard working people! Brick work is hard work & you both make it look so easy! The videography is so beautiful! Thank you both for another wonderful video!🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
Thanks Reina! We put a lot of effort into these videos so it brings us a lot of joy to hear you enjoy them 😊
Welcome back! So nice to wake up to a new installment from you guys. The little house is coming along nicely - that roof is going to be beautiful! Hope you all had a good holiday and a bit of a break. ❤
Thanks Esme! Although not making videos we were still extremely busy over Xmas/new year so not much rest 😴 had a great time though 😁
Ah great progress once again. Ricky the bricky will definitely stick. Keep going folks. 😊
12:33 this woman is total sunshine, look at that beatiful smile. she's a trooper too, putting in some real work.
The red brick adds so much curb appeal.
I watch you in part because I am improving my English. I just love how Victoria says " abundance" and "jungle". Sometimes I chant those words over and again, thinking of her lovely smile. Don't worry, Ricky, I am a woman - a real one!!!😅
😂
You kids are awesome. Love seeing what you are doing next. All the best from Canada.
It's getting there brick by brick. I hope you both had a lovely Christmas and New Year.
Thank you💛Slowly but surely we can see it coming together! 😅
I understand about the goats. In some places in US you can rent goats to clear your meadow. I have a small cat rescue so I understand being away takes a lot of planning. Pet care is a responsibility. My questions: What do you find your most useful tools and what is a favorite tool? Thank you. Seeing you Working outside under that beautiful sky makes me envy you. It's bitter cold here with high winds. It will be several months before we can work outside again.😊
Well done both of you for all your hard work. Take care and stay safe. All the best.
Just wanted to comment and say how much I enjoy the nature shots in your videos. Very beautiful and lovely to see.
Lovely seeing you both and the house is coming along nicely. Keep up the good work guy's x
I'm sure you inspire a lot of people. Good work and a new year with great project
Who doesn't like some good B-roll 🙂 The little house is looking amazing! Wish you all the best for 2024!! Cheers Bert 🙏🏻❤
Love your channel! You both adorable! Best wishes for 2024! Looking forward to see what the new year brings for your homestead!
For a man just stretching his legs, your doing well, good prep for the marathon later, Goats eat brambles, its all looking wonderful now, take care you two.
We’ve got a LOT of brambles that need constantly staying on top of
Look at you guys! Ive been following you since one of your first videos and you had very few subs, and now you're partnering with local companies and have over 65K subs!!!! well done. You deserve it.
Just found your channel a week ago and all caught up. Your videos have really gotten so good!! Beautiful footage of the clouds and landscape. Congratulations
I’ve been following you two from the beginning, your joy and fun you have doing the various projects make me smile/laugh with you. Love your attitude to the work. 👏👏😘
I was a "take your time and build it up with stone" supporter but i understand your reasoning :)
A French drain? Excellent idea. Ya'll are gaining great skills! Experts in the making. Praying ahead so your harvest will be profitable. 3 acres is larger than the number first appears. True? Thoughtful people both of you.
That's a good idea to get the tiny house renovated so you can live in it while you do the main house you cannot live in a building site you need time out ❤
You are a pleasure to watch. I love how you work together where needed, then divide and conquer. Well done!
Safety glasses, Victoria! One poke in the eye with an olive branch could be devastating!
All cudos to everything you do 🥳🥳🥳🥳. This is the perfect time to show the world that we need to have our own little place where we can grow our food and live off the land.
Have you ever heard of electro culture? If not, your going to love it. What your trees with copper and they will grow strong and yield lots of fruit.
Best of everything ❤❤ to you both . 💪🏻🙏🏻❤️🥳💙
Top tip brother - the expanding foam is truly a miracle, but straight out of the can with a plastic tube and it goes everywhere. Invest in a foam gun and cleaner, and you’ll see/save the difference!
Bought one today 👍🏼
"Ringbeam"..good term for that. Learning some great skills. At the finish it will look professional. No doubt. Those rods are very hard. A Saber saw would be valuable .
Amazing team together ❤
Would one of your neighbours be happy to graze some of your land while you are there. Stock can mostly be controlled with simple electric fencing, or even borrow a couple of goats on collars and wires to eat the brambles. It is very common to see tethered goats in New Zealand. They are used to maintain road frontages. Happy New Year to you both.
Novice or not, that is some very nice brickwork.
Congratulations on the sponsor.
Well done on the progress, looks great
Afternoon from cape town south Africa ❤
Enjoyed your video! The stone cottage is looking so good! Good job on stringing and pruning fruit trees!
Loving the progress...well done.
Possibly a self propelled push mower would be easier for the fruit Grove than weedeating/strumming. Looking great.
The work on the tiny house is coming along nicely. Do you have plans that you can share for the main house? Can't wait to see what that will look like a year from now.
Doing the good work That's Ricky and Victoria 👋👋 Love you Guys❤ Sending You Warm Regards from Richmond, Va. Jim, Harriet and Yuki
Hi guys! We’ll probably share full details of the main house reno once we’ve moved into the tiny house & we can show you around the space once it’s been emptied
Guys, loving the content- pace-progress and of cause the education…. ❤
Hi couple it's an inspiration to watch you both..helping, respect, and you can see the dedication on what u want to achieve..I'm from Philippines, I love nature.
I'm 66 years old.
Love it. Love watching your channel and how well you two work together.
HNY hope you had a good one, nice to see you back. House is looking good Ricky and well done on the maintenance of the land Victoria. I love the chat between the two of you x
Ricky the brickie. Gold. 👍
Great video guys! You are some hardworking fellas and is a pleasure to keep up with your journey! 😃
If you adjust (rotate) the guard on the angle grinder you can 'control' where the sparks go. Something to consider with future use.
You are so sweet together, thank you for sharing your journey!
When using a grinder around your membrane just use a ply board or any non solid sheet to re direct the sparks 👍🏻
Luv you both… it’s hard work but it will be amazing when it’s done.
Cheers from Oz🐨🐨❤️❤️🐨🐨
The bricks looks so awesome with the red roof and in my opinion even good brick layers wouldn't have done such a perfect job. They work to fast to get it that perfect. I wouldn't even plaster over the bricks 🧱 the seems to form such a interesting line where the house meets the roof but I am sure you guys know what you want! 🎉
We were actually surprised how much we liked the look of the brickwork too!
Hi from London! Missed you. Hope you can catch up on the work without wearing yourselves out! Love to you both and the pups too. 😀
In Australia one can “hire” a goat/s as there are farms with serious blackberry problems (saw a programme of said problem in Tasmania)
It was amazing the clearance the goats achieved! Btw it is a little nerve wracking to observe that neither of you (Ricky in particular) wears no safety attachment whilst on the roof top! I enjoy your programme a great deal and best wishes on your renovation/rebuild journey
Hi guys, you have done an amazing job on the little house. That roof looks great Rickie. Victoria you are doing a great job tidying up the land. Those olive trees will be even better this year. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👏🏼👏🏼
Beautiful beginning to this video. The tiny cabin is looking very good so far. Such hard work and ingenuity you two!
Ha ha - 'Ricky the Brickie' - l like it :) Well done guys 👍
Well done, you two - your joy and perseverance are great.
I love watching your video's , I think everybody can see you are both really nice genuine people , Teddy and Poppy are so lucky to be with you ❤❤ And you make me laugh 😂 keep up the good work 😊
You are moving right along, looking awesome. You make a fabulous team, keep up the great videos. Hello from Alabama, USA.
Again, amazing progress! Such a beautiful homestead you have! Just can’t wait for the next video! Take care of yourselves!❤
That looks great, you're doing a fine job.
I'm glad you're being so responsible in your attitude to animals on the land, I didn't expect any less from you as I know you respect animal life as much as human. There's also the question of caring for them & the extra expense of potential vet bills etc to consider.
The strimmer is a relaxing tool to use in any case, I used to enjoy using mine before I lent it to a friend who returned it broken!😂
Thanks Annie. It’s so tempting to get some animals as we’d LOVE IT (the dogs probably would too!😁) but it wouldn’t be the responsible thing to do right now…wow I think we’re finally becoming responsible grown ups!😂
@@LifebyLiving It was inevitable it'd happen one day 😸!
Your videos give Vibe of Vikings and Game of thrones.
The little house is beginning to look stunning! Please use gloves when you work with cement. I hope the fruit tree will thank you in the sommer with lovely fruits.
The stone cottage is going to look so awesome! Dont even worry about the bricks.
Happy New Year from New Zealand. Just taking a break from doing some of my own work on my house, so nice to see you back for 2024. Loving seeing the work going well, I'm sure you'll be starting on the main house in no time!
Great job, guys!
Well, now I know where my green and black olives come from.
Re: livestock. Sheep or goats could be a good idea, especially goats because they'll eat such a variety of plants. I've had goats and they are wonderfully useful and can easily be tethered or managed with electric fencing to concentrate on one area.
Some four-foot manure spreaders can do a lot to increase fertility.
Year-round ownership has its' challenges, though.
I'm wondering if there is any way you could work out a plan to host a local farmer's herd for some concentrated grazing, then send them home when they've done their work. An offer of free grazing might be attractive to a local farmer and solar-powered electric fence is very easy to move and use, both for control and protection from predators like wandering dogs.
If there's a simple way to do it, it might be worth the effort.
Your current plan is working well and I really enjoy watching your progress.
Great work love the video’s. Well done Ricky the Brickie
Very nice darlings. You both are logical, methodical and tidy people's, love this about you both. The building is looking fab, love it.... Blessings darlings.......😊
Happy new year to you both!
It's looking good. You are wise not to get any sheep or goats until you are sure you can have somewhere or someone to look after them while you are away. I really enjoy you channel.
❤ you 2
Enjoy you both
Tanta perfeição merece um prémio😅😅😅🥂🏅🏆
12:36, you can borrow or rent goats and sheep to help you with your grass growth. Find a local farmer or group at a feed store. I'm sure they'll know someone. Just an idea!
Good afternoon from the south of France. If you plan to plaster over the brick, you can possibly add pigment to the plaster. In that way, it will resemble the lentils over the door and windows. Cheers-
Very talented couple. Truly a Jack and Jill of all trades and very hard workers. Excellent videos.
Thanks Charles!
Happy new year
Great take and crack on😊😊😊
You guys are doing an amazing job, well done and happy new year to both of you.
Great video guys.
It’s coming along ❤
I like the red brick looks very nice.
Highly recommend uprooting the crown of roots for the brambles now you've removed the vines. It will go a long way to eradicating them before you install your French drains.
Watching from, Mabank, Texas. That's midway between Dallas and Tyler , Texas. Very country. . Retired Marine
Keep going your doing a great job
Great job guys.!!!😊
