- It's been a nerve wracking few weeks wondering if the concrete ring beam on our stone house renovation will turn out ok! This week we're removing the formwork from the cottage & beginning the process of building the new roof by raising the new ridge beam...by ourselves...with no crane or mechanical assistance! GULP! What could go wrong?!
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it & SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Central Portugal & the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone cottage, setting up systems to grow some of our own food & finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊

We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

You don't have to explain or apologize for not posting a video - life happens! We all know that. However, thank you for sharing what you do share. You two make an excellent team! It's nice to see your plans coming along - congratulations on a BIG job well done.
Thank you for your kind message! 😊
You are one of the very few super couples that hasnt let CZcams go to your head. That isnt buying enormous tracks of land and filling it up with all size tractors, or paying others to do the work. You remain down to earth individuals with a good sense of humour and yourselves, sharing in the toils of the day. I would have hit the bottle after your recently spent week. Welcome back. and another thing. although i know you both take care of the femenine half of this couple, you both still hold her in great esteem and show that she is quite capable of doing some hard and thankless jobs !!!
Too right!!!💙
We are not looking for false enthusiasm we just enjoy people that are real ..
A two piece ridgebeam is also stronger than a one piece , so well done in many ways 👏👏
Sorry about your loss. But you’ve powered through and got a huge job done with ingenuity and hard work. Hope the pups are all okay.
Thank you Reet 😊 They’re on the mend 🐕 🐕
Traditionally once the ridgebeam is installed a compliementary lunch and day off is given to the workers.
Well done, young couple!
Bloomin' marvellous!
Brighten my sundays...dont apologise....great ingenuity...great couple....great work....cant wait for progress❤
ingenious way to get the beams up!
All of us followers love you, never be sorry when life gets in the way, we all happy wait❤
💯❤️❤️
Hope you guys are ok. Looking forward to more vids. 😊
Very clever way you devised to get that ridge beam up! You should be very proud😀
Condolences on your loss. Good progress on the build!
Your ladder system for the beams was very ingenious, I'm impressed! Thank you for sharing how stressful the last weeks have been. Have a good, peaceful week.
Thanks Michele! We were just sooo relieved that it worked! 😅
Yes indeed, that was very clever. (Maybe, just maybe the dressing blocks on pyramids were done this way?) You work well as a team and accomplish a lot by your own wits and making-do. That attitude can achieve a heck of a lot; good on you.
Wow you guys are incredible together! Victoria you are an iron woman.... Well done guys. I love, love watching your vids.
Keep on Truckin'.
Oh, dear, so many difficulties and sadness. Glad your furry family recovered. Moving the beams was impressive. 😊
So sorry to hear you have had a rough few weeks. Sending condolences for the loss of your loved one.💕
Hope the doggies are feeling better now. You two are simply amazing! Just watching you hoist those huge beams up made me feel tired. Had a good chuckle at Victoria’s dream of the canoe 🛶😂What a difference you’ve made in the tiny home since you began the work on it. It is shaping up nicely, and I can imagine how beautiful it will be when it’s finished. Don’t forget to take time out to rest your bodies, and please don’t fret about not posting every week. Sometimes, you just need to take a break. Take care, 😊💕
Wise words, Jan! 😊 Thank you, the doggos are on the mend 🐕 🐕
Well done guys! 👍 Give yourselves a Pat on the back! Proud of you! 💕
Awesome plan to get that wood to the top!!!!
so sorry for your loss,i lost my dad last month, there is no need to say sorry life must come first take care.
Holy wood ladder Batman! I can't believe how well that worked!!!!
😂🤣😂❤️👍🏾
Never worry about what (some) people might say or think, you're both doing a great job, be proud of yourself!😀👍
Great job guys, well done! Best wishes from Costa del Mansfield 👍🇬🇧🤣
WOW - amazing - you guys are an inspiration!
Lovely having you back and don't doubt yourselves ❤
Love love love watching you make your dreams come true. 😊
Amazing work done, take care of yourselves.
Wow - that's sense talking! What a brilliant solution - as was the case when you brought the big beam down, I was convinced when I saw those two little twigs that they would never bear the weight, but you made it work! What one lacks in brute force one must make up for in ingenuity. Huzzah to you!
Great to see you both back 🇦🇺🙋♀️
wow bravo👏
Wow great job your Tiny house will be beautiful well done
Love it 😊
Congratulations on the ridge beam!! Big step to getting your roof. 👍
It sure is, Sean! We both breathed a sigh of relief once it was up 😅
@@LifebyLiving love the ingenious solution to get them up there!! Can’t wait for the next instalment. 😉
Bravo! Didn’t think you could lift the beam; but I stand corrected. Hat off to Victoria!
Thank you for doing a time lapse of the form removal! So many others posts do long, boring and painful real time! Love what you are doing to your little house! You are both so humble and real! I would love to be your neighbor!!
Great job, it’s nice to see the enthusiasm for hard work! I have a couple of pointers that you may or may not need-
1) be sure to “crown” those ridge beams before you attach them to the walls. ( also check that they are level before and after installing)
2) buy yourself a proper construction hammer with a straighter claw and more weight. It will make a huge difference.
3) WOOD = what you burn.
LUMBER = what you construct things with.🤓
Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing this with us.
Brits don't use the word lumber 😆.
Please don’t apologize! I am so sorry for your loss! You are 2 of the hardest workers on utube! Plus, you never complain. Being that I did concrete work around my huge pool I would never do it again! 🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
No explanation necessary! am so sorry for your loss and am glad you and the puppies are safe and well now.
And YOU DID IT! Great job on getting the new ridge beam up!
You two did well putting those 2 ridge beams up as 4 the funeral +poppy getting sick +wife's glands playing up time + unforeseen circumstances befall us all take care I enjoy your videos
That's an epic achievement doing the concrete by bucket! Having very little touch-up work to do too is definitely deserving of some beers I think 🍻.
You guys have just produced your first concrete ring beam, it’s an absolute success wow, your already taking on board what you’re learnt for the main project….. more please….🍺💥👍🎉😎
Thanks for the support, Colin! 😄
@@LifebyLiving always 👍😁
Wowsers you've both been through the mill with all that's gone on. I think you've bot done a tremendous job with the Ridge beams. That ladder you made was a brilliant idea. Yours both working so hard so no apologies needed ever. Have a good week ahead xx
Thank you, Gaynor! 😊
Great job!
Ridge beams are up! WELL DONE! Was a little anxious about how in the world you two were going to get them up safely, but - WOW! Your ingenuity is obviously limitless. Definitely not lackluster this week and no need ever to apologize - life by living and you two do it beautifully. Sorry for your loss, good to see the puppies are better and we are all happy, impressed, relieved and proud of you! Thanks for another great video. Have a great week ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for your kind words, Esme! 😊
well done great achievement on getting the roof beams up, very brave Victoria l couldn't have sat on the top moving the beams into place
Thanks Wendy! Neither of us have a great head for heights - it was definitely a little bit of mind over matter at moments! 😅
You are anything but dull! You are clever and dedicated to your homestead. The quality of your relationship shows!
These beamladders are genius in simplicity...😀
No, why discuss a fact...😊
You are both delightful! I'm always amazed at Victoria's strength. She looks a bit like a girly, girl BUT she's SO much more than that.
Could not be prouder for you!
You are certainly experiencing life by living! What a fabulous job on that beam raising, Krypton factor level (probably too young to get that ref😏). You really are a great team and I know how busy you are but I hope you are keeping a diary for that book for when you are sitting on the decking, in years to come, reflecting on your success😊. Sorry for the family loss and all the brickbats thrown in your way. Big love to the floofs, hope they feel better soon! I'm a recent convert to your story, a close friend recommend and have finally caught up! A story worth recording in text. Can't wait to see what the next few weeks bring. Take care❤️
The ladder system worked well. It was working smarter not harder. Still hard but doable. Victoria I am amazed at your climbing to get the beams to the top.
Awww you guys have certainly had a crazy few weeks. I'm so sorry for your loss. Please apologise, your both the most nicest couple around, I always enjoy watching you both and the dogs. Youve done a great job on the ring beam. It's really coming together, you should be extremely proud of yourselves. Hope the dogs are ok now? Take good care ❤
Virtual applause from Las Vegas for getting the ridge beam up there. I loved your improvised "ladders" to finagle it up there gradually. Your desire for perfection is combined with a canny knack for improvisation. And using two beams bolted together is just another example of your many clever and pragmatic "hacks". I really look forward to seeing how the rest of the roof shapes up.
Lackluster???? 🤣🤣 NOT!!! The reveal was a WOW, the lumber was a WOW, the beams were a HOLY spitting camels WOW 😳😳😳 your ingenuity and diligence are well, almost always a WOW y'all are super hero rock stars!! Condolences on your loss and very glad to know you're doing well!! 🥰🥰
You were genuinely missed! Im glad everything has settled down and progress can continue. Thanks for making the effort to share this week. Love to you from Australia. 🇦🇺 🌈🌻💕🦋
Thanks for your support, Jill! 😊
Don’t apologise for not vlogging. Sorry for your loss and also have heard about the serious fires in Portugal. The concrete looked amazing you certainly have worked hard.❤️❤️❤️
You don’t need to explain yourself guys! The two of you give a very old man so much joy with the energy you expand.
Much love from Australia, simply love your vlogs. xx ❤️☘️🇦🇺
Guys you are doing great. Sorry for your loss! 😟Hope the pups are well again soon. Keep up the great work!!
Ohh, sorry for your loss🙏and am terribly sorry for all the tough stuff you have been dealing with,I hope the puppies are well now and your property is safe 🙏 sending you loads of hugs from Nairobi ❤❤❤ super proud of the way you carried those humongous beams to the roof 🎉🎉🎉 Victoria my dear, you are a very strong and courageous woman ❤❤❤
Great video guys! I love seeing work being done. Much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖
Bravo. You did a amazing job with the concrete to support the roof and carrying the heavy weight of the wood onto the roof. What a awesome idea using a step ladder Good for you, enjoy the rest of the week. Hope things get better❤❤❤. Sorry for your loss
Thank you for your kind message 😊
Awww!! What a time of challenges! Love the joyous picture of you sitting on the wall! I am terrified of heights, so cheering you on all the way!! Concrete looks amazing!!❤
Thanks for the support ZeeCee! Neither of us have much of a head for heights but the ridge beam was an excellent distraction! 😅
@@LifebyLiving You are most welcome, Ricky and Victoria! I am Marsha, BTW!🙂
@@ZeeCeeCreations sorry Marsha, it was Victoria replying to comments this time so she wasn't aware of your name 😊
@@LifebyLiving Oh gosh!! No worries at all! I honestly kinda forgot if I had given it to you… I only give it to certain exemplary folks!! Blessings to you both!
@@ZeeCeeCreations "exemplary folks" eh?! We're honoured! 😃
Great video. Love to see your progress.
It was brilliant to see you managing to move the beams into place!
Watching the video was stressful enough. Respect!
Amazing work guys. Such a pleasure and privilege to watch you working together. So glad you prioritised yourselves last week over the pressure from 'The Algorithm' to post. The tiny house is going to look so amazing when you're finished.

Sorry for your loss. Continue to be safe while handling those heavy timbers.
Excellent job!!! There is always a way, the key is to go slow and think each step through. You're making great progress.
Thank you, John!
Great work glad it all worked out for you both. Sorry to hear your news. Glad you both are well and staying strong. Very clever idea to get it up to the top. Good bless you both ❤❤❤
Thanks for taking the time to share, in-spite of everything going on with you.
Sorry to hear about the loss in your family. The ring beam looks great and that was a fantastic idea to create a ladder style ratchet system to raise the beams.. well done to the pair of you and the dogs look as if they are feeling better too the way they were running around.
Thanks Raymonde! Little will stop the doggos playing around but they are definitely on the mend now! 😊
Well done. It's quite an achievement getting those 2 beans up there. Well done.
Good going Ricky and Victoria 👍 Always take care ... your well-being matters 🙏
Oh my God! What a week you had! I thought this video was great, especially showing how you guys work so well together! Take care of yourself that’s the most important thing! I’m 78 years old and I did some pretty stupid things when I was younger and now I’m paying the price With my back! I am a single female and I cannot. I move myself every time. I physically changed my living location, and I lived in DC and didn’t like driving with the traffic so moved frequently to avoid having to deal with traffic! Now I have back issues! So the number one thing for you to young people is please be cautious with your health so that you can enjoy your later years!
Sorry for your loss. You guys are doing such a wonderful job. And you are both delightful! Good of you to support local business!
Good afternoon from a very hot sunny London, hope both happy and in good spirits 👍
Hello you two!
You are doing an amazing job, not only physically but also mentally. After all the setbacks, you have a smile on your faces and resiliently keep the hard work. The result is brilliant, congratulations!
Great work and the roof beam looks splendid. Top tip; put the water some water in the bucket first then add some concrete mix. This stops the mix from going too quickly into the set phase and you can add more water / concrete until you reach the right consistency. 😍😍
Thanks for the tip, Paul! 😊
No apologies necessary!! You are great! Thank you for sharing! Stay happy and focus... sorry about the funeral.
Ingenious use of "ladders" to get your ridge beams in place.
Great video guys. Sorry to hear of your loss. Such a good and very hard job you've both done, you do work well together. Many thanks for sharing. Take care.
Thanks Yvonne! We’re certainly glad to have this particular job ticked off the list! 😄
You are such a good team! Never give up! I love you guys!!!
Guys, you made that look so easy, but I’m sure that was really hard. This means you are ready to start putting beams and the rest of the roof. Great job. Keep it up. Love and be safe!🤗😘🌼🇻🇪
You've certainly had a lot on. As long as you are all OK. You've done such good work don't know how you do it. Lovely to see poppy and Ted playing together. Great video as always ❤
Hoping for a more emotionally peaceful week for you it’s been a lot but that ladder system unbelievably ingenious
