RESTORING AN ABANDONED HOUSE | Pressure Washing Old Stone
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 28. 11. 2022
- It's a dirty job on the tiny house this week! The old stone on this abandoned house looks as though it's never been cleaned, so I'm cracking out the pressure washer in an attempt to bring this granite stonework back to it's former glory!
There's a couple of challenges to overcome first though because this tiny house is currently off-grid, so I need to get water down there in order for the jet washer to work...turns out that's much easier said than done!

Also say hi in the comments, I would love to hear from you.

Hi I'm Ricky đ
I moved from the rat race of the UK to a more peaceful life in Portugal with my girlfriend (& dog) & we bought a 3 acre off-grid farm.
Follow my journey as I document our life here in Central Portugal & the MANY DIY projects that I'll be tackling including building a tiny home, renovating the 2 stone buildings on our property & converting a 30,000 litre water tank into a swimming pool!

Looks amazing mate. Strongly advise coating in a chemical mix beforehand next time. It will save you lots of water and time.
it's like magic... looks a lot less rustic but a lot smarter cleaned
Itâs so satisfying to jet wash a patio , I canât imagine how you must feel seeing your home emerging from dirt and moss etc! Take care, Laura đ¶đ¶
Itâs a super dirty but VERY satisfying job! đ
I can wait to it finished
The tiny house should look beautiful after the wash and pointing. Ricky, you have great skill sets to get the job done. It's such a joy watching you bring back that tiny house. Well done mate.đđ
Sending you , Victoria and your dog's much loveđđ from Jim, Harriet and Yuki. Richmond, Va.
Thanks Jim & fam! Itâs looking so much better already. I just canât wait to get the new roof on, new windows & report the whole placeâŠa looong way to go before that though! đ Have a fantastic week guys â€ïž
That's a great result for the first run Ricky, the improvement is dramatic already and when it gets fully cleaned and repointed it will be just incredible.
Thanks Raymonda! I canât wait to see it all once itâs been repointed!
Wow, that made a big difference and well worth the effort.
what a fantastic result on those walls! How lovely to see your puppies. Can't wait to see your next video and what you're going to do inside that wonderful little house. I wish you have a great week. Wishing you many congratulations on the new baby!
Thank you CĂĄtia â€ïž
Well done.Good job, looks much nicer.
Beautiful video, Ricky! That sunset! Sorry Teddy is still poorly. I think youâve said the issue is arthritis and if so and if chicken feet are available where you are, they contain high concentrations of glucosamine and chondroitin and might help. We give a couple every day to our 10 year old pup and have seen quite an improvement. And he loves them! Kudos on Poppyâs crate training! She looks and acts a very happy pup!â€ïž
The little cottage looks great and on itâs way back to its original sparkling self. The concrete sounds an absolute nightmare. Hope you can find a solution that makes the removal less tedious đ€đœđ€đœ. Thanks for another great video âźïžâ€ïž
Thanks Esme! Yes you remembered correctly, he does have arthritis but that wasnât the issue here. He vomited on the walk & seemed a bit blue so I just wanted to keep an eye on him đ Weâve been giving him a supplement for the last 4 years called YuMove which is a glucosamine & natural chondroitin supplement. I canât stress enough how much it changed his life for the better! He was struggling to even walk as he was in so much pain. After the initial 6 week double dosage to replenish the deficiencies, he was running again & has never looked back!
@@LifebyLiving very good news! Glucosamine and chondroitin really work miracles â€ïž. Hope the other issue has cleared upđ€đœđ€đœâźïžâ€ïž
That pressure washer did clean the old stone really well.
You guys are doing a great job. I live in Newfoundland Canada and I am enjoying your videos very much.
Thanks David đ
Looks so much nicer. Worth your hard work. Its going to be amazing.
Fantastic result, Ricky! The house is 'smiling' again with almost as happy a smile as yours!
Excellent plan for the water supply.
Glad Poppy is improving and hope Ted will be more comfortable soon.
Have a great holiday with your family and their newborn in UK, Veronica.
Looking forward to seeing the inside after being pressure washed. The granite stone walls are such beautiful features.
Itâs smiling again! Good analogy Marlene! đ
Good job on the wall. The inside of that IBC water container looks a little sketchy! Love the care you show to your dogs - lucky animals. Thanks for video!
Beautiful sky
The pressure washer really does a great job! So satisfying!
Have you done a test excavation around the outside of the building to see of there is a stone patio hidden under a buildup of soil and grass? Also to ensure the current groundlevel on the outside is lower than the floor on the inside.
Greetings from Tetouan, nice adventure , good job.
The concrete filling doesn't look bad, but the pressure washing made it cleaner and lighten it up. That was a great job.
When the cats away the mice will play. Congratulations on the birth of your nephew safe travels to Victoria. Great job on the powerwashing its very satisfying when you see the difference from when you started !!
Thank you for the update. You did very good on the cleaning. Well done. Love and Blessings to you all. Doris, Penrith đŠđșđŠ
Your hard work is paying off!! Hallelujah!!
Do you know when these stone buildings and walls were built? I find it very interesting to find out how people built these items with the tools they had at that time. How did they haul all the stone to the location, how long did it take them, etc.

Good job!
Such hard work! Best of luck!
Great video. That pressure washer made such a difference!
A window in the roof in the messanine would be nice. But i love your ideas. And i will follow you on your yourneyđ
Looks so much better Rick its amazing what a difference pressure washing does .... coming along slowly well done x
Nice one!
I loved the updates! And it's a pleasure to see your doggies đ
Thanks Caroline đ
Victoria seems so sweet and cute đ„°. Off grid living is a lot of work, but must be so gratifying đđ»đ.
Yep, Iâve had to make sacrifices too, living far away from all family, having pups and kitties at home. My hubby and I rarely get to travel together, unless we have someone to take care of our critters, and plants.
Unfortunately itâs the price you pay for following your dreams. Once weâve renovated the house & thereâs a proper living space here, weâre going to use pet sitters so we can take a break here & there to fly back & see loved ones more frequently đ
Good job
Love to power wash!! Loved watching someone else also get great results! Looks so good !
Its a dirty job but a very satisfying one!
For removal of the concrete mortar you could give a needle gun a try, they are used for removal of rust on car and truck frames in the restoration process. Most are air operated so you may need to get a compressor too. Looking good Ricky, nice to see your progress as you build your farm life. Be well.../B
Thanks Bob. I think Iâm going to try the needle hammer route first & if that doesnât work possibly sandblasting. Neither of them are readily available in Portugal so Iâm going to get one online.
Good to see you getting on with things, know what you mean about when your partner's away, never works out quite how you plan as time gets away from you!
Yumove is great stuff, our cat's been having it since summer & is much improved. Hope Teddy is feeling better now, wonder why he was sick.
Make sure you wear eye protection when you start removing the concrete pointing.
Happy Christmas to you, Victoria & your furry family Xx đŽó §ó ąó ·ó Źó łó ż
Great job Ricky!
Thanks Claire!đ
Looking good Ricky. Safe travels to Victoria. Hope Ted and Poppy are OK with Victoria gone xxx
Thanks Gaynor! She got home late last night to be greeted by two very happy dogs! đ
Aww that's great xx
That must be great to do. It is doing it s work.
This is what every time happens to me too. When my partner is away for a business trip, I get all lazy at home in pyjamas. đ€Ł
đ
Thanks for your vid Ricky đđđđ love you guys.
Smart man. Great job đ
I donât know if this would be helpful but seeing the front side of the tiny house reminds me of the granite and lime facades of âThe Newbyâsâ Portuguese home. While their corner stones are larger, the historical application on their home would look amazing on yours. Check it out. Wonderful global couple making a life in Portugal just as you are.
Wow at 16min mark the geo engineering in the ski. It's gonna rain.
Great episode, enjoy visiting your nephew đ
I just love how the pressure washer gets the job clean, I did our driveway, sometime ago, I think I got as much dirt on me as I got off the driveway đ
I can't wait to see how clean you going to get the inside done. Good luck đ
Haha I know what you mean! I think I just transferred the grime from the wall to myself!đ
âŠ..@Ricky âŠ.wow what a difference in the stone after pressure washing it. Great job!
I could watch pressure washing for hours.... not sure why? Thanks for the video!
Itâs very satisfying! đ
Hey Mr Wonderful đ This cottage is going to make an awesome home for you all đ
Poppy did a good job in the crate!
Yours videos are better and better for every day.
Thanks Liliana! Iâm trying! đ
Never tried on concrete but air needle scaler might work.
I have actually tried this already. Canât remember which video itâs in though. It works BUT it does damage the face of the stone in the process. Iâm trying to get hold of a sandblaster at the moment
Greetings from Canada. I just found your channel and I am thoroughly enjoying your projects. I especially like your filming quality and use of music and of course the dogs.
Can't wait to see how all your project turn out.
Ingenious Heath Robinson contraption.
Itâs looking great!!!
Great watching đ
Love your weekly vignettes
Thanks Michele! I like them being described as vignettes. Makes me feel like Iâm making art! đ
My dog like ten end 1/3 of my cup of teađ
Haha never heard of that before! Ted likes to sniff the mug but has never tried to drink any đ

Gas pressure washers are much more powerful. Looking good.
Please be careful with the acid. Protect eyes & skin & have water to wash offđ
Wow pressure washer worked so great.
Trust you managed to watch this episode Victoria where Ricky planned to watch some movies and as usual fell asleep - Plan B - wake up and get to work.
Thank you Ricky. Enjoy your alone time, with your buddies too.
I had some deja vu moments with a Martijn Doolard video. Looks like the same tank. Woop.
Probably. Theyâre very common tanks in rural areas
@@LifebyLiving - I always appreciate your responses, but if doing so is a burden, let it fly. Did you solve the stove issue? Did you see my post about large camping stoves from Holland?
@@FUToob no burden at all. I enjoy chatting to people who are interested in what Iâm doing đ Yeah Iâve found a few options for stoves thanks. Will be a while until the order gets placed thoughâŠgot to get the building completed first đ
Great vid. You could fit a flow switch on the well pump and a ball valve in the storage tank? Your videos make me want to do exactly what you guys are doing. Love it.
Hey Ricky, Victoria, fellow Mansfield veterans lol
Great job, another step forward weâll done matey đ
Cheers Addie!
Uluru (Ayers Rock) in central Australia is granite with a high iron content that has gone rusty, thus the colour.
Love your work đ
Wow, so much hard work. Good luck on all that. I have used muriatic acid in the past but i think maybe on tile??? Don't remember. It was a nasty mess but eventually worked well. I think some renters let their dogs pee all over a patio. (No dogs allowed rental.) Disaster. You are doing SUCH a good job. Great work.
Iâm fully expecting it to be a nasty mess! đ
@@LifebyLiving The end result will be sooo satisfying, though. đł
have you given much thought to stacking IBC totes three high in which there distended for full of product in transportation four high in warehousing ........also they can be stack on three empty cages with three or four full on top of ........ this will give water pressure for use .........we the north ....S
HELLO RICKY. GREAT JOB. LOOKS SO MUCH BETTERđ„° CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE HOUSE ALL POINTED WITH THE LIME. HAVE A BLESSED DAY. CONNIE SUE FROM KANSAS USA đđđșđČđ„°đđ
Thanks Connie! I canât wait to see it all pointed either! It will really bring the place back to life â€ïž
Ooh I just love jet washing, absolutely anything!đsooooo satisfying...but...it's a filthy job isn't it? I hope Ted is feeling better, and I hope Victoria had a great time too.
Itâs a dirty job but the end result is soooo satisfying!
Hi, What are the black connections called that you are using on the pump to connect the in and out pipes? I have the same pump and have struggled to find good connectors. Thanks đ
Yeah, I wouldâve said the same myself. đ
Hey guys,
Just found your channel and I'm hooked! You probably been asked this before but how much did you pay for your property? We from South Africa and been in the Algarve since Jan 2023 but looking for something similar to what you have and more central/north PT as your aware the prices in Algarve are high. Well done guys keep up the great video's and hard work.
Excellent results on the stone house. Also, congratulations to England and the U.S. for both making it into the round of 16! England easily, us by the skin of our teeth.
Congratulations to you! I was collecting Victoria from the airport last night so listened to both games on the radio. The last 10 minutes or so of the USA game was so exciting! Iran were determined!
Hi, great job, remember to cover the tank to prevent the water from turning green.
Will do đ Weâve got a cover on the way but at the moment Iâm using all the water before the algae has a chance đ
@@LifebyLiving .....this is a CZcams thing isn't it Ricky..!
....where people treat you like a two year old and tell you REALLY obvious, simple things.....!!
.. I'm sure it's, mostly, not malicious or condescending....but, still...!?!?
It's almost like they think you just turned up in the middle of a situation knowing nothing about anything..and switched a camera on!!!
Haha my husband said yes enjoy you're single time đ
đ€Ł I have to try & enjoy it otherwise Iâll just mope around!
Hi!
Nice Job đ .
What kind of pressure washer did you use?
"Get your mind out of the gutter" lol
đ
Hoping puppy withstands your work time!
What an ordeal getting the water up out of the well for the pressure washing. đ°
Maybe you could bring the dog to where you are working?
The issue at the moment is that sheâs recovering from surgery so we canât get the wound dirty & sheâs not allowed to run. She would just get too dirty if she was tethered outside. She did really well in the crate though so no dramas đ
@@LifebyLiving Oh good. Poor thing. She is lucky that she found you.
Nice VLOG as usual. Jet washing is very satisfying - I had to do the pool surround and all the drives a couple of times a year at our house in Italy. Hard work but results worth it. Surprised you're not using eye-protection - if I didn;t my eyes were always sore aftwerwards from the fine grit and dust that blows back at you from the nooks and crannies.
Thanks! I was stupid & should have worn eye protection. I didnât have any injuries thankfully but at the end of the final day a tiny stone hit me about 5mm from my eye. Will definitely wear glasses next time. Safety first!
Ricky you need a golf cart to get around quicker and haul your tools on the farm. đ
I think a golf cart would be totalled in a day! đ The ground is so bumpy! I really need a tractor with a trailer but theyâre very expensive here & I canât save my pennies quick enough! đ€Ł
Or a quad bike!
Amazing sunset photography Ricky (around 15:00 in)! Thx for the tip about using a low-pressure washer, I'm either going to rent or buy one in the spring for my farmhouse cottage here in northwestern France. I have 3 walls that are just regular mortar and unfortunately one where someone in the past used cement - I hate that and don't understand why. Anyway, I've been told by several people around here that cement is very hard to remove so good luck to the both of us :) Also, something you may want to consider before you start pointing - here in France a mason told me that the traditional method is not how for example Theo did his, but rather you cover the wall with the lime mixture then rub it all down to expose the stones, kind of like when you're grouting a floor. I was surprised but now when I go driving and pass all the stone houses in the area I see what he meant and they do look quite good. Have a wonderful holiday young man!
Thanks Steven! I know exactly what you mean about the pointing. The method youâre referring to is very popular in France & Iâm a big fan. Here in Portugal they tend to point between the stones rather than cover them. Iâm going to try & do somewhere in between - point between the stones but not have the lime as recessed as Theoâs is if that makes sense.
@@LifebyLiving good plan!
Ricky you do an excellent job on these vlogs! Ask the diligent Theo about the removal of cement and such. He worked so hard on that. When will you do roof?
Thanks! We were hoping to crack on with the roof before Christmas but thereâs been a few delays behind the scenes so will probably not be until the new year as I donât want the job to be half finished over Christmas
What a wonderful vĂdeo. I'm portuguese and love to watch your videos and love the way you speak, I understand everything âșïžđđœđđœ you say, no need for subtitles ( in English). Great job đđœđđœâ€ïž. ParabĂ©ns pelo vĂdeo, um dia vou ter a minha casa. Um abraço. You already speak portuguese?đ€
Sim, falo um pouco. Estou a aprender hĂĄ mais de um ano. Acho que Ă© difĂcil, por isso o progresso Ă© lento! đ
Hey Ricky do you have the option to get a large battery bank with AC output and charge them with your solar panels? Might be useful for when you don't need the full generator running for some smaller appliances on the property
Chemtrail sky again.
Your stonework looks to be in great shape. If I were you I'd think outside the box and not so as Theo and Bea. Instead of building up more stone and then placing new roof I would suggest framing the upper extension on the existing walls. This will do several things by making the process not only faster and easier but allow the introduction of light from above without the need for skylights.
Here in the US I know the term "Clear Story Windows" that you could place in the upper section and possibly make the roofline a "Saltbox" style while creating a covered porch or surround.
I think this structure is much better than what Theo and Bea had. It is an amazing project which should be fun as well.
I enjoy your channel good Luck
Thanks Harold. Weâll be raising the roof a little but as much as weâd love to add a couple of feet of extra height, whether thatâs using stone or framing like you suggested, it requires planning permission here & weâre trying our hardest to avoid going down that route. I love your idea though. Would make the place so bright
Ricky will you be doing the roof reno yourself or hiring help? The outside looks so good now! I can't imagine how tedious it will be to chisel out the concrete, yikes.
Weâre going to attempt it ourselves đŹ Might be a stupid idea but Iâm confident itâll turn out well (although Iâm sure theyâll be many mistakes along the way! đ). The only bit Iâm daunted by is getting the heavy ridge beam up into position!
@@LifebyLiving I'm sure you will make a good job of it! Maybe just get help for the day of the ridge beam?
You really need a small truck of some kind as a farm vehicle.
Nice! Those are beautiful stones. Would you like to come do ours next?

Why so far away from the well to fill the water container
Watch out with the adverts tagged on to this vid. Titanium washing line pole???
Where did you get the IBC from Ricky? I could do with another one and attachments that fit are really hard to find. I normally get them sent off OLX so any pointers appreciated đ
From regacentro on the castelo industrial estate. Itâs next door to the auchan petrol station if you havenât been there before. They also sell every type of fitting you could possibly need!
@@LifebyLiving I know exactly where you mean. Ta. Did you happen to pop into Agriloja to look at their wood burners? They have some nice little ones in there đ
What a lovely piece of land you have.....almost as lovely as your wife lol
Both of them are a dream! đ
Put a tiny, tiny sink, maybe in corner of bathroom.
đ
I would have started the roof repairs first.
Weâre not repairing the roof, weâre replacing it, timbers & all. Weâd wanted to do that first but weâve had a delay with the wood & also weâve had LOTS of rain so havenât been able to remove the old one yet
Well done, Ricky! Even without your lovely partner! I have a question, if you donât mindâŠWhy point with lime? Isnât that a painstaking process? Excuse my ignorance, Iâm just curiousâŠCanât wait for your next video!! M
Of course I donât mind đ I want to point with lime because itâs a stone building. When the stones get wet from rain & internal condensation, they absorb the moisture. If pointed or rendered with a cement mix, it traps the moisture within the stone which causes damage to the stone itself, particularly from freezing & then thawing out. If you use lime, it acts as a wick & helps to draw out the moisture from the stone, protecting the granite but also reducing internal issues of damp etc. The process of pointing is just the same as using cement. Iâm not using a quicklime where you have to mix it months in advance. Iâm just using a powdered bag. I hope my essay makes sense! đ
@@LifebyLiving Oh my goodness! Yes, I understand now! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this to me! I do know that it looks very beautiful when done, so, Iâm looking forward to seeing you transform your little home! My secret desire is to live in a tiny home⊠I know it will never happen for me, for many reasons, but I can certainly cheer on your progress!! â€ïž
@@ZeeCeeCreations If I can do it so can you! đ
I was wondering if your able to drive your vehicle down to that end of your property? Would save wear-n-tear on your backs! đ
Weâve been talking about this a lot lately. We would need to clear a track & a probably lay down some gravel as the top of the land is very steep & the earth is very soft on the slope. I think getting down would be ok (albeit a bit nerve wracking!đ) but getting back up would be difficult. We need to do something though as soon we will have big heavy wood delivered for the roof & as it stands weâll have to carry it down the land! đ
@@LifebyLiving ~ Oh, I see. Yes you'll have to shore up a pathway for sure. It's a little deceiving isn't it. Looks firm enough but I'm sure if you could you would drive down there! It looks quite away from your gate.
@@kwells8807 It's so soft in most of it that your feet sink into it! đ It's because it used to get ploughed every year so there is no grass root system to firm it up. We're working on getting that back though!
