This week we started planting our raised bed vegetable garden! We've dreamt of growing our own food for a long time now so we thought it was time to put plans into action & make it happen! đȘđŒ
We decided to go for raised beds for our little allotment & the kind people at VEGEGA gifted us these beautiful raised beds. We're definitely going to increase the size of this garden in time but for now, we're starting small as we're only beginner gardeners & learning as we go đ
Please LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoy it & SUBSCRIBE if you want to follow our journey as we bring this farm back to life!
And don't forget to say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you đ
Ricky & Victoria x
-------------
We're Ricky & Victoria đ We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that weâre not experts in anything that we do here, however we donât let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

No drama, no clickbait, no wierd thumbnail. You two just get better and better,so enjoying following along .
Totally agree! â€
Yesssss! I really appreciate that.
All of those...missing! Great stuffđ
True, agree with youâre great fun and give lots of inspiration ! đ very good episode đ
100% agree, no nonsense just two genuinely lovely people.
Wholeheartedly agree with all the comments - no drama, no begging, you just get on with the job. You are one classy couple. All the best with all your projects, I just know you'll thrive in your place of paradise. Love Ted and Poppy - they're so content with their life on the farm. Enjoy your videos so keep them coming!
You are so cute and make a good team. Like others have said, no drama, just straight forward optimism. Youâre a joy to watch.
Yes they are!â€
They so are!
Youâre too kind Mona. Thank you for watching â€ïž
Just a little tip for your peas and beans in the round bed. Weave some string in circles around every 8-12 inch in height to give the plants more to grip to and climb up and along. It also adds a bit more structural support for the weight of your hopefully bountiful harvest!
Love your channel. Yes, sometimes you have to overcome difficult times. You guys are so calm and not dramatic. It is so relaxing to watch, and I know it is hard work, but you make it fun. đ
Thanks Cecilia â€ïž Youâre very kind đ
Peas can go right directly in the ground. I also call the pea trellis a Tee-Pee. I have been an organic gardener for well over 50 plus years now and gardening is my favorite thing to do. Any questions just ask.
Thanks John. We need all the help we can get! đ
Such a calming video again! I love how honest you both are and straight forward. I watch to relax,so I appreciate, as everyone else the NO DRAMA! Pure relaxation! Thanks as usualâŠ. So glad to see that you communicate with my other channel the Newbyâs. They are a relaxing video also!đđ»đđ»đđ»Blessingâs
Like your videos. No over the top enthusiasm and you guys just getting on with it. We've just had an offer accepted on our own little place in Portugal so we are beginning to get excited for our own future as well.
Your gardens look wonderful. Love watching your videos and seeing you enjoy each others company. Thanks for making me smile today.
Ahhh thatâs kind of you to say. Thanks for watching Joyce đ
I was hoping you would have put the cardboard in the bins because it helps hold moisture and compost well. The bins are so nice and go well with the greenhouse. Good idea to think about the full sun and shading also. Will be seeing you next week. Have a great week.
You are a lovely couple.
Thatâs kind of you to say â€ïž thanks Isabelle
You two are so cute! I love your communication and how well you work together to make your lovely home and garden. Your video has put a smile on my face. I enjoy them so much.
The peas and beans can start from seed in the beds. They will sprout with the warm temps. When I was a kid it was one of my jobs to plant beans and peas.
Weâve got some peas & mange tout to plant now! Theyâre currently soaking in water as we read that was good to do before planting?
Yes thatâs what I would recommend direct seed they come up in not time and will be nice and strong. And the teepee is a sort of obelisk.
You two are a complete breathe of fresh air honest no drama and so enjoyable to watch the progress. I love that you seem to enjoy the process must time lol.
đŻagree. My favorite channelâ€
Thank you Nancy. We try to enjoy the process as much as possible as we make these videos on our âdays offâ so itâs basically our weekend together đ
Great job with the raised beds. Look forward to seeing all your plants producing for you.
I've always called it a teepee trellis. The mime performance at the end was funny!đđ
đ glad you liked it! Thanks for watching đ
@@LifebyLiving đ
Love your raised garden beds. You can direct seed peas and green beans in your beds. You can soak them overnight for a little head start. Also, think about a trellis for your tomatoes as they are vines and mine grow over six feet tall. Of course it all depends on the variety. Take care and be safe. Ciao đ©âđŸ
We soaked peas a few days ago & planted yesterday! đđŒ
Love your channel, you certainly have done well making both your tubs and planting your seeds looking forward to fruits of your labours.â€ïžâ€ïž
Well done the beds look great!
Thanks Lisa
Well your mime career might be at risk but your gardening skills are solid!
đ thanks Don
You both should have your own gardening programme on TV so are so easy to watch and very natural. I adore it when Ted and Poppy come to greet youâ€
Thanks Nicola! The only flaw with that idea is that we donât know much about gardening! đ
You can DEFINITELY start beetroot in containers...smaller cell trays work well. The important thing is to not disturb the roots....I've grown mine that way for many years!
Love the raised beds and I think youâll need quite a few more for all your little plants. Really enjoying your channel đ
Thanks Alexandra! The plan is to definitely have more beds. Weâll probably have another area too thatâs just plants in the ground but thatâll have to wait until it can be fenced off otherwise weâll have dogs weeing all over our produce!đ
Straight Forward and Sincere is what we like about you. You know how to ride a rollercoaster of projects that continue to keep you engaged. We talked to our local Horticultural Society about
what they call the vertical structure in a flower bed or garden. They say you can call it a Teepee or Trellis. Great job in putting all together. Sending you much love affection â€â€â€ Jim , Harriet and Yuki. Richmond, Va.
Thanks for your continued support guys! Teepee it is then! Straight from the horticulturalists mouths đ
I plant 3-4 beetroot seeds in the same hole in a plug tray (your yoghurt pots are ideal too) and transfer each plug of seedlings out together into one hole in my raised bed once they have a good set of leaves and as they grow they expand outwards so have no issues with space as long as each group is spaced apart appropriately. Charles Dowding and other professionals on CZcams do this. Love your channel đ
Don't worry when the soil goes down in your raised beds. I have found that down 6 inches or so allows some wind protection and even some frost protecion when things are tiny. You can make newspaper pots, roll strips around a tomato sauce can and fold the bottom in and staple side. You can plant these direct when seedlings are up and going. I usually tear the bottom off and sometimes cut the side without disturbing the root ball. Peas don't like to be transplanted either.
Obelisk, though quite rustic! Seedlings that dislike transplanting can be grown in biodegradable pots which can be planted directly in the ground (ex: separated cups from a egg carton). With recycled plastic yogurt cups, if the seedling pops out cleanly as in your case, the roots will not be significantly disturbed. For plugs that don't, just slit one side of the container so it can be removed carefully in one piece. So happy for you that after all the necessary preparation you now are getting into the early growing stage of veggies before that window of opportunity closes. Yay!
You might want to use those colorful plastic cones (was there some ice cream in them?) to build bee cups? Just stick them into the earth, put some stones/pebbles in and then add water. The pebbles make sure the bees don't drown. :-)
Good work folks. Will subscribe to help you. You caught me with the adoption of the strain dog and your calm and zen attitude.
Portuguese teacher from Porto here. Best of luck for your project.
Peas grow in lines bean grow up your teepee put two beans to each pole thats what i do you can grow thing inside your teepee love you beds great idea with the leaves put leaves in black bag leave for a couple of years you end up with leaf compost great for plants
So love watching your videos. You're living the life I'm hoping to start when I retire next year! Watching you gives me so many ideas and useful tips.
Thanks Wolff! Super cool name!
Great video. Those raised beds look just the job! Now for a bit of bee roll đ€Łđ€Ł But seriuosly folks queen bees often hibernate in leaf mulch until May. So gather up fallen leaves early and don't disturb them.
Super update! Excited to see your produce grown and provide. Paper can be quite aggressive đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł itâs cut me a few times in vicious attacks đđŹđ§â€ïž
Iâve just stumbled on your channel and I thought Iâve seen Alan before helping the indy project. Now Iâll start following you two because I love seeing young couples trying to build a life together. I live in Australia so keep up the good work. Doug.
Love the channel. You guys any plans for making a wildlife pond?
We do actually! Itâs a plan for the distant future though. We both love the idea of having ducks swimming around. Weâve spoken about a pond in a previous video but canât remember which one
@@LifebyLiving great I made one 3 years ago and love it has made my garden as iv made a wildlife garden it's not big enough for ducks but frogs toad and newts and the birds love it. Best wishes from sunny Scotland xx
My husband made our raised beds out of wood! I would have loved these, but they were expensive!
Love the wooden beds. Weâd love to have wooden ones too but wood is so expensive here at the moment!
Look forward to seeing how the raised beds do. Best wishes from Cornwall
It's a race between you and @OkPortugal đ€
If you move your canes closer together in the round bed it will give you more room to plant other crops. As it is now the space inside the canes is waisted as it will be too shady to grow anything. Lettuce is a cool weather crop and tends to bolt in warmer weather. Some look big enough to start taking the outer leaves off for you to eat and they can carry on growing, this way you can be eating from the same plant for up to 3 months. The beds are looking great though and you'll be starting to crop from them in no time at all!
You can plant beetroots in pots or plugs, 4-5 together in a clump. But in your climate sawing directly works as good.
I truly believe when you embark of moving to another Country renovating old stone houses, learning the language and the life in another country along with all the challenges you face and learning s you go you can only do it if you have a committed partner that shares ideas and willing to do it together and Rick and Victoria are a perfect match I love how you interact with each other however I am sure you have your ups and downs hopefully there will be more ups than downs. I have only started seeing your video's and I am enjoying them. Remember to take time for yourselves so you can continue to do all you want to achieve. Rome wasn't built in a day as they say and what you have both achieved thus far is incredible. Keep on keeping on and enjoy your new life together. I look forward to seeing all your other video's. Kind Regards from Australia.
Hi guys, wigwam
You two are the happiest and most charming people I know. May you be truly blessed with an amazing garden. Thank you for sharing your beautiful life with so many.
Iâm always so eager to see you both on Sundayâs. Thank you for sharing!!
Thanks for watching! â€ïž
With regards to the structure, weâve always called them a wig-wam but letâs face it, a wig-wam and a tee-pee, are the same thing, please keep your lovely videos coming đ
Great job. Much easier using raised beds. In no time you will have dinner ready to go. Your interaction with each other is wonderful.
Absolutely love your channel..you're completely charming together and you actually teach me things even though I'm old(well older..65)
Don't transplant tomato, peppers or eggplant until the ground is totally warm - usually late Spring into beginning of Summer. It is good, however to start them indoors under lights in the winter to get a head start on them.
Your channel is so refreshing, calm yet productive, and just good old entertainment. Thanks for inviting us into your Portugal experience.
You could have put the cardboard under the beds, they would have rotted down, and aided in compost.
Another great video, thanks guys. As a long time gardener I have found that root veg do better in an older garden, I'd leave planting any until your bed is 12mths old. Carrots especially tend to produce multi roots and will twist up. Good luck with it đđ
Thanks for the tip Sharon đ
What a great raised bed system, I am very impressed!
U two are such hard workers and loving puppy parents every thing is looking so beautiful
Great video guys. Really enjoy watching you both. Thank you for sharing. Take care.
You both are hilarious. Love you both. Great job you two. You will get a good crop, no matter what you plant. Thank you for sharing. Love and Blessings to you all.
Doris, Penrith đŠđșđŠ â€â€â€â€đđđđ
The colour of the garden bed is better than a darker colour which would warm up the beds during the heat of summer. Putting leaves in the bottom of the raised bet is good, however filling it half way with branches as well will decay overtime. This is creating a hugelkulture bed and keep it as a no dig garden, chopping and dropping previous crops then adding compost for the next. (this is a permaculture method) You don't have to use logs in your beds. They're mainly used in the very tall raised beds. Mark from Self Sufficient Me is an excellent resource. I've always called the pea structure a T-pee so your right there.
This channel! So much good humor. Always look forward to it! Here are some good companion plants for lettuce, which definitely like more shady spots: beets, Brassicas (broccoli, kale, etc), carrot, cucumbers, dill, garlic, onions, radish, spinach, squash, and strawberries
Thanks for all the advice Monika! Youâre a fountain of growing knowledge! â€ïž
Hey guys, love your Chanel! Keep them coming. Just a little tip. The leaves you put in the raised bed, look Oakey, Am I right? I beleive oak leaves, will make the soil somewhat sour. You can compensate this with chalc (kalk in duth). Happy growing!!!
Hi, Victoria and Ricky !
Just in case no one answered your question:
You were correct it is called a,
' Teepee Trellis ' what a fun name đ.
Great work guys, those raised beds are great. Iâve just used pallets for flowers, I think itâs the heat treated ones that donât give of toxins for the veg. Happy planting đ
As others have said, you two just get better and betterâ€ïž. And as Nancy said, complete breath of fresh air! Love the raised beds, very nice addition to the property and look forward to seeing everything come to life. Good first try at miming too! Maybe donât give up the day jobs just yet thoughđ? Thanks for another lovely video and have a great week.â€ïžâźïž
Thank you as always Esme for your kind words â€ïž Weâre actually thinking of starting a second channel that will be exclusively mime videos đ
I look forward to your vlogs every Sunday and I love them! And I love your humor and the bloopers at the end. I know very little about gardening but I am planning to grow my food in the future, so it is great to follow your experiences and learn from them.
Hello from Sunny Nairobi đ€đ€đ€ Happy Spring to you guys, the raised garden looks amazing can't wait to see you prune and harvest đđđI finally caught up on all your videos â€â€â€
When you have very fine seeds you can mix them with fine silver sand which spreads them out more. It works well for carrot seeds too.
I like the shallow raised beds. It's easier to fill and the roots will find their way into the soil below. đđđđšđŠ
I always say gardening is one big experiment. Youâre so lucky to be planting already, Still frozen solid in western Canada. Your miming was so cute.
Love the veggie garden genesis! Your videos are just what I need... just calm and lovely. I'm here for the long haul. :)
You two are gorgeous! I love the joking around that you do together. I find myself laughing out loud. Just a suggestion: my greenhouse has mini gutters on either side, and I have hooked up rubber pipes that feed into an IBC tank. With our summer rains in Australia it is nearly full. đ
We just hooked up an IBC today but because we need to raise it up, the top is actually higher than the greenhouse guttering so we need to come up with another plan for getting the rain water in
Your raised bed garden looks very nice. You need a hose or water nearby. When it gets very hot your plants will be very thirsty and need deep watering. I learned from experience that carrying water from another place will be very difficult and wont be enough. Set up something closer to your plants.
Iâve started beetroot seed on a damp paper towel quite successfully and transplanted the ones that have germinated. Greetings from Southampton uk
Interesting! Maybe weâll have to give that a go next time đđŒ
@@LifebyLiving I also germinate beans, all squash types, even carrots and cucumbers with great success. As soon as you see a small root peeking out, transplant only the germinated ones immediately and discard the others.
Great video. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.
You guys are the cutest couple ever. I love how you are who you are. You both work so well together. The garden area is looking awesome, love the raised beds.
What a breath of fresh air you two ARE đ Iâm glad I found your videos. Thanks & May God Bless your efforts & journey on your beautiful propertyđ
Have to disagree with the beetroot advice you were given, Charles Dowding master no-dig grower always starts his beetroots, and most other crops apart from carrots, in pots. So you've done nothing wrong there :-) looks great what you've planted.
Use boiled linseed oil for the potting bench you can stain it any color and it's good for any outdoor projects.
Well just remember the old adage from little acorns mighty oaks can sprout but do you have any birds circling that area as 10 to 1 one of them will have seen what is going on and word gets out "It's meal time boys and girls."
You, are troopers, you both look so happy working together. Bless you both and every success in growing veggies. Xxx
đâ€ïžâ€ïž love you all guys, you and doggies.đŸđŸ
(Moira Ashton) "OK Portugal" have the same beds, !!!! They have filled them on today's vlog!!! đđđxxxx
great raised beds, you can also grow peas from seeds never heard of pea starts:) have a wonderful week. the trellis is a Tipi.
Weâve got seeds currently soaking ready for planting! đ Thanks for watching
The best part of seying both of u just doing things like a couple of Portuguese people in the first years in camp, congrats best of wishs and dreams love from a Portuguese fan †p.s like myself little things make me happy too :)đđ
Victoria and Ricky thank you both so much for keeping me uplifted with your videos. You are so refreshing to watch. I love those raised beds and keeping my fingers crossed you get a good crop. Have a good week ahead and thank you xxxx
Thank you Gaynor â€ïž Youâre too kind
OMG!! The out takes are adorable and sooo fun!
Garden beds are just amazing! They look sturdy and I do love the color! Hope you donât mind a dumb question from an old Yank⊠What are you eating at the end of the video?? It looks delicious! â€
Haha theyâre coconut macaroonsâŠyummy!! đ
What an enjoyment to follow your good life. â€
Hi i enjoy watching your channel ,not missed one. Just a little idea regarding your stone trough where you had your lettuce, is as it warms up it might be good to use it for a starting patch for your seedlings. Sorry canât remember the proper term used. Lettuce donât like extreme heat they will bolt. So thinking that i think your shaded line of lettuce which you will put the tomatoes in front, i think should be the winners in your experiment. Saying this they (the lettuce) will probably prove me wrong đ. Thank you for sharing parts of your everyday life, its so enjoyable to watch.
That was so nice the company to give you those raised beds. I am itching to start to grow mine stuff. I hope mine turns out well this year, You are certainly getting progress.
Looks great guys, I use the same beds. I found the rim at edge popped off after being in the elements. I stopped popping up by glued it down. Have fun with the gardenâ€
Good tip! Thanks Heather đ
I am so jealous of your T-shirt weather đŹđ§ đ§ïž
For extra energy, make your own C60 oil from C60 powder.

Sweet babies! LOVE your dogs!
I love you guys so so much!! Your family is adorable!! It's really lovely being able to go with you guys along this journey!
First few seconds into this video and I can say you're editing has been amazing! I really enjoy watching your videos on my Sunday mornings. I'm in Washington state USA
Thank you Sherry! Really appreciate that. Itâs a lot of work! đ
I can imagine. I've been watching since you both first started and I can see lots of changes. Have a great week!
Great job on the raised beds and veg garden. Victoria - you can sow beetroot seeds in cell trays, and even multi- sow seedlings as a result. Please see Charles Dowding's Skills for Growing book for great advice! Keep up the fab updates .. :)
Great start to your gardening. Always leaning as you go, as nature can present us with nice little surprises! đ When you think nothing is happening and then you get lettuceđ Love your calming videos~đ
Thanks for the suggestion. I may get one of the taller ones smaller dia...
It takes two to tango and you are great dancers đ
Another great video. You make my day when I see you have a new video to watch. Watching you makes me wish I could visit Portugal.
They look great. Like the Birdies in Australia. We have the high ones as otherwise the rabbits (pest) and possums eat everything. Yes it took ages to fill and for Autumn I will put more soil in. Happy gardening.
PS we put ours on a base of stones which is great as pests cut dig up into it.
Lovely couple you are. I like the vibe between you.
love the show and you two are so nice and your work is admirable
