We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

Under NO circumstances you two should work outside under those circumstances, some people have tried it and paid a huge price for it
Take a few days OFF from that renovation, do all the research you might need and take care of the pets etc
Tomorrow is another day
From the South west
Very sensible taking a break from working so hard and from the heat, the pool looks very inviting 😊
It really is, Karen! 😊
I think the word is rustic for the steps, they looked great and fully recycled. Well done you two, keep safe and take it easy in the heat.
Ah...you guys deserve a rest...good to see you taking the steps required to do so.
Just loved your work today. Every week, my wife and I look forward to watch your episodes.
Thanks Mehdi! 😊
@@LifebyLiving your inspiration and perspiration are inspiring.
Great video, we love watching you all each week.
Thanks for all the funnies. You two always crack me up. So glad you slowing down. Now smell the roses! Or the figs and water melon 😂 regards from South Africa 🇿🇦
There's absolutely no reason to be ashamed of taking some time for yourselves. Relax. Enjoy. Have a cold one...🍺
nothing like having endless projects to free you from perfectionism in all things!
Ain’t that the truth!
So glad you are slowing down and being safe with your health. Spend more time in the pool!
Thank you Christine 😊 We have to remember it’s a marathon, not a sprint!
GOSH, 🌞..Hearing how the heat is swelting hot. I'm so glad y'all had gravel, wood to repurpose for the pool steps...The forest, lake was beautiful...
Keep Cool my friends..
The cottage isn't going anywhere..And Victoria the Watermelon Kooler looks Sooooo Refreshing ..🌞♥️🌹
Very well done stairs. Pool looks inviting.
Please pass On the pancake recipe ! They looked sooooo good ! Smiles from Florida

Lots of delicious things for topping/drizzling! 😋
@@LifebyLivingThank you! 🇨🇦
Classic words from Mr Hogget from Babe….”that’ll do pig, that’ll do”, 😂 I use that alot too! Great work good to see you both relax for a bit!
I love watching you two work together.
What you really need is a pad of Cool-decking. It won’t get too hot, and a lot more comfortable to bare feet! It’s like a patented coating for concrete, and is used for pool surrounds. It’s dicey to apply: if you don’t do it right, it can crack and shed. It’s non-slip. I think you have to lay it down during cool damp weather. My parents used it in Illinois and Arizona, so it can hold up to weather.
Still find every week a true pleasure. Thanks for the joy of sharing your lives with us.
I'm a new subscriber from the USA. I live in Woodland, Alabama! You guys do great work! Thanks for sharing these videos!
Its not a race, me time is very important, you are doing a grand job there, thanks for sharing, good luck!
I love seeing you two work your projects in an honest, balanced way. Yes, you’ll have stressors with the unforeseen (weather, material, whatever) but that’s a given. The priority is your mental and physical health so good on you for showing your intentionality in that direction with this video. And I cant wait to see you and the dogs swimming in that lake you took us to!
Thanks Deborah!😊 Getting the dogs in the water is DIFFICULT! Ted hates the water, Pop likes to dip her toes but not swim
Good job. Rest is important. Very important.
Very wise to take a much needed breather...and that platform and step up for the pool looks great.. just shy of a "balcony railing table" to put some drinks and snacks to finish it all... cheers
Your health is most important if you ruin it while you are young you pay for it the rest of your life so do what you need to do to take time to recover from all your work. We will always be here to support your efforts and enjoy the process but you need to take down time and recoup!
Don't do too much in that heat. Taking a break from it all is restorative. 🙂👍👍🇨🇦
Very good. Enjoy your soak. Enjoy your beautiful Portuguese sky.
Greetings from Palm Springs, California! I understand the “ burnout “ phases that can overwhelm people at times. Your doing well to distract yourselves with other activities. Consider adding some greenery around your pool area maybe some solar string lights and a shelf for cold drinks? It could be an oasis that would be a motivator to get through the dog days of summer while building your home. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Great to see you (sort of) having an easier time in the heat but Victoria could you please wear a hat to save your beautiful skin 😊
Looks great😊❤ and the plunge pool looks soooo inviting!
It sure does! ☺️ It takes some discipline not to spend all day long on there! 😅
Enjoyable video. Don’t over work in the heat. The pool looks great.
Every little helps fairplay for taking the break and looking after yourselves !! I was a bit disappointed when I seen Victoria with the baking stuff out .... I thought we were finally learn "how the get the figs into the figrolls" But not to worry with that watermelon receipe your well forgiven !! Enjoy the pool folks 😁😁
Good thinking re resting and also improved setting for pool. You could put a small container of water next to step for rinse off before hopping into pool.
A smart and simple solution! 😀
I’m sad for you guys that it is too hot to continue your work. But every cloud has a silver lining. You are doing the right thing. Having a chill time with that lovely smoothie and just taking time out for yourselves. Enjoy your downtime. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
glad you're taking a bit of a break, the pool looked very refreshing.
Hi Victoria and Ricky. Love your work 👍
The plunge pool steps are just what you needed! The pool looked so inviting! Take it easy in the heat.
Lol you deserve some laid back time in the heat you've been getting. The plunge pool with the steps up looks very inviting. Victoria your pancakes and drink looked good, very refreshing. Have a good week ahead both xx
Lovely rustic wooden stairs
That was a lovely breakfast ! You deserve a break ! That heat is not healthy. Keep cool guys ! 💕🌷
Nice touches on the front of the pool. I thought your step was beautifully done, much better than from a woodworking 101 course. I love your videos.
Great just chilling on a hot and humid day as we are experiencing here in Richmond, Va. watching this video on a Sunday afternoon. The remedy it''s not a race. Take good care of yourself.
The pace of the music is perfect. Just close your eyes and dream. We love the music. Where is it from? Hope you guys are coping with the heat as we are. Be Well ! Stay Healthy!
Sending much love❤ from a hot and steamy Richmond, Va. Jim , Harriet and Yuki
Enjoy your downtime and relax. I can’t imagine how you can do jobs in those temperatures. Look after yourselves. Great steps! 🙌❤️
Pretty cool a “swimming poop”.....you can even do your working swimming exercises ...such a relaxing feeling as well right after a good shower🎉
Glad you’re looking after yourselves!! My son has a lovely big fig tree that is just loaded with figs… I must go over and get some more of them! Wonderful video! Thank you both for sharing! It’s just great to look forward to your videos each week!❤️🥰
GREAT to see you taking a break in the pool~! You Two have earned it!!
If you stayed out in the heat too long it could make you have a heat stroke, so glad you opted to stay out of the sun. Those pool steps are just what you needed to get into and out of the pool. Good job. Those figs and watermelon looks so inviting. The weather may turn wetter later and you could still work on the tiny house when the season changes. Great job you too.
Enjoy your down time.
I have been working long hours recently so today I took my daughter and our small dog kayaking. Miles of smiles and we are both shattered, but in a good way.
I also put an offer in on a property in Portugal this week. Just waiting to hear back...
Have fun 😊
Good luck with your property purchase! 🤞🏼how exciting!
Take a rest 😊 enjoy your surroundings ❤ you both work hard 😎
Find a river beach and enjoy the colder swim!
Take a break you guys deserve it. And afterall you have a house to stay warm and dry in so no rush❤
Nice to see you take some time out this week. The Lake looks great ❤️. 👍🇬🇧xx
The water is so clear, it’s a lovely spot! 🌲 ☀️ 💦
You guys should give yourselves more credit. The steps look brilliant. Can’t wait for the next update. 😊
Thank you Joanne 😊
I always admire how you both cope with he heat, slow it down you both need to enjoy the journey as much as the outcome and a slower pace wont change to outcome but it will hopefully ensure you enjoy the Ride much more! A Mindfulness approach maybe.
Thank you for your thoughtful message, Gary 😊
If you get a chance of picking up a tablesaw cheap, the plunge pool being wood clad like a hot tub could look really good - you may get some more hardwood that would work really well outdoors with the pool. A batten frame around the sides and then a waterproof hardwood cladding could look good.
It's your schedule and heat as well as mental health needs to be refreshed. Glad to watch.
You're being very sensible cutting back on some of your jobs. It's definitely not good to be working during the heat of the day. Nice job on the gravel base and steps by the pool. Stay cool 😎😨❤
You both are amazing, you are pioneers. Take time - enjoy as you go.
It's impossible to work in this heat we do all our chores in the mornings although we have quite a few jobs to tackle but the Alentejo region is the hottest part of Portugal so they are put on the back burner for now..enjoy the pool the steps look great does the job ❤
It’s quite interesting how in different countries we have different names for the same thing. In my country 🇿🇦, what you call gravel, we call “chip stone”. Here gravel is more of dusty, sandy, stoney surface, used for farm roads or the base of tarred roads. Enjoying the cottage build, you enjoy the time out. 👋
Terry,
In France 🇫🇷 it's called ' Shingles ' I'm baffled by the difference in meaning although it is the same items.
Love the channel! Ref in and out of the POOL, Why not get a large plastic tray to act as a foot wash (like they have in most swimming pools) SORTED!. Hope this helps God bless you both.
take it easy, with those temperatures nor even we portuguese are able to move a lot. and for someone that needed a rest you worked a lot with those steps. relax as much as possible.
What a beautiful lake
The steps are just what you needed. Beautiful lake guys. Love and be safe!😘🤗🌼🇻🇪
I don't know how you went to the lake and didn't go swimming....it looked so inviting.
Good job on the steps to the pool
I've strengthened used posts that had some rot by scraping off the soft spots and soaking them with a solution of used oil/diesel - an old farm trick to preserve wood. The end result was stainable and it now looks just fine and is strong. A couple of know-it-alls told me they were garbage, and lo! they had to eat crow.
I wonder now if the soft wood could be left on and then soaked - could that harden the wood? Curious.
I'm enthralled by your venture.
Both of you are unusually respectful of one another. At least on camera, and I can only hope, in person.
Good you’re taking it easy, or at least easier, in the heat and good to remember that life/ work balance thing. I say go with the flow, it all works out in the end so enjoy! Definitely going to try that watermelon/cucumber smoothie and would love the pancake recipe, they looked so yummy! Thanks for bringing us along on your walk by that beautiful lake, lovely to see you and your so cute puppies enjoying some leisure time! Take care and have a great week❤
Hi Esme…here’s the recipe!
300g flour (I use gluten-free)
50g oats
1tsp baking powder
1tsp chia seeds
1tbsp maple syrup
Pinch of sea salt
400ml of any milk
Lots of delicious things for topping/drizzling!
@@LifebyLiving Thanks! Definitely will be making these❤️
You two should really take it easy tin the extreme heat it isn’t good for you.❤️❤️
I like your Humor! Nice people!
Here is a little tip for your pool. Get a plastic jar with a lid, drill holes at the bottom, put a 2 inch piece of copper pipe inside, drop it into your pool. You will never have algae. I saw that on a tic tok and thought of you. Hope it helps
Great video guys. Glad to see you’re taking a step back and not overdoing things in that heat. Pool looks really good. Just what you need. You are amazing and deserve every success with your projects. Look after yourselves and take your time. ❤❤
The doggies need the have a swim! 🐕
Great project! Next, what about a place to spray off your feet?
Happy to see you again.Yes change the plan when it needs changes. And yes, enjoy some leisure and good times.
Thanks Carol! 😊 It was lovely to slow down for a few days!
Love your channel. Good call on taking it easy and throwing in a small hike for the pups. I'm really glad that Victoria became a full part of things - it wouldn't be the same without her. I really enjoy that you two pick off projects together big and small.
Extremely early and late afternoon work is what it takes, being independent and being home much of the time is part and parcel of home creating, the same applies no matter where you live. 👀👀💗
Those steps are perfect!
you achieved the goal improvisation its the goal end well done and you recycled even better take care
Great steps, definitely a better attempt than my year 7 woodwork!!! Take super care in the heat, Laura 🍻🍻🍻🐶🐶
😀🇨🇦So well done on conserving and using what you have. Appreciate the funny side of Ricky as well. Keeping things lighthearted when the going feels like a slog is a gift as a talent. Thanks to you both for this video.🙏 I was hard at it this early morning back in the devastated forest while the dogs were in the 3 acre private playground, got a bit sore between the shoulders and time to take a break. Channeled you guys while working all this week on outdoor chores. We are not alone. We all have lots of chores and figuring out how to solve them. Started staining the exterior then rain came so I took a break. Gave me a chance to see if your vid was out...and it was...so...got a cold veggie/fruit drink and cooled off watching the fun you to had for part of your week. I continue to channel your energy, sense of humour and pace again this week. Things were scorging hot for 3 weeks in July but August here in Atlantic Canada, 🇨🇦Prince Edward Island, is a bit cooler...and for some reason Mother Nature wants to make sure we are well watered....so the newly planted hardwoods on the Conservation habitat memorial 11 acre forest are really happy this Summer with all the rain. Meg chiming in again....and Victoria I put up another video but this one is an awesome slow motion of the new re-homed dog that has learned a cool new trick when pool play time comes. Let me know what you think....I figured out how to use the slow motion mode...and it turns out to be really neat when speed of a dog is being filmed. 🐶🐶🐶
Ah Meg loving the slow-mo ball catch! Sounds like you’ve been much busier than us this week. Do the dogs just get to roam the whole property? I bet they’re so tuckered out by the end of the day!
Good on you both. Take time to smell the roses 🫶
We enjoy your videos regardless of whether it pertains to building or just the life you're building for yourselves. So do take it easy in the summer. I mean, the whole iberian peninsula does!! There must be some (strange) wisdom in not over exerting yourself when its THAT hot :-)
Oww the pancakes delicious 😋. Keep cool over there..well done on the steps...😊
Great job❤
You are wise to accommodate the weather & your recognition that you are feeling a bit burned out! It’s wise to balance work & relaxation. Life is short and balance is wise for health, for relationships, and for overall contentment.
Thank you so much for your vlogs.
A Gram from Missouri.😘
Take it easy when you can, and must. I live in a hot place, too, so I understand. Stay well!
the idea of alternate living is getting away from the rat race of the cities & slowing down but no one ever does & so they always burnout by 2yrs of living on their properties, just look at the Newbys, he's finally had an injury.
here in Australia those temperatures are pretty normal summers here, we tend to take holidays over the hottest month being January & schools are closed for 6-8weeks too;
enjoy yourselves inbetween the work always
thoroughly enjoying your journey, thanx for sharing
Take care !!!!🇬🇷
I find it amazing how you seem to enjoy everyday, rain or shine. Inspiring, I should say. (I'm portuguese...)
Portugal is a beautiful place, we’re fortunate to be here! We try not to forget that! ☀️ 🌧 😊
The pool looks so inviting. You did such a a great job making it useful. The steps are "make do's" but for now they are perfect. I know it's wrong to covet but those figs look was yummy. Such heat! I would have melted. You got a small project done so Yeah! 🤗
Just keep in mind to add some texture to concrete steps, because concrete is VERY slippery when it’s wet.😮
Finally finished. Best to be safe than sorry with the formwork around your pour. I think i will celebrate with you. I do the same with using my previous days works clothes when concreting/cementing. And on we go. you will be harvesting soon enough
Understandably, we hadn't seen your very playful sides as much. Loved it.
Hey guys! Good luck in the heat. Btw, where I live they have cement trucks with long tubes that you can pour from the truck directly into the form you created. Maybe they have that in Portugal? Would save you so much back-breaking work. You wouldn’t have to lift anything.
Good idea to take a break from everything and let it give you head space to see where you can do changes. I am very happy that you are taking this hot weather to take the time off to sort things out that are better for the two of you. Have a lovely day.
Lovely days with eachother, nothing better than that :)
I'd love to try those pancakes could you share your recipe please take it easy guys you deserve it you work really hard😊
vypadá to dobře
That little pool was a SUPER DUPER idea!!
Just the place to go on a hot day
08/11/23
Great work guys on the new entry for the plunge pool. Loved the lake and the video transition from home to the lake with the van door was very creative.
Good for you for taking a few days rest. Keep up the great attitude.
You're doing very well. Yes, important to look after yourselves. I am a great believer in a weekly rest day.
