THE RAIN RUINED OUR PLAN! Renovating an Old Stone House

  • It's been wet, windy & wild here on the homestead & unfortunately the rain has ruined our stone house renovation plans this week, preventing us from pushing forward with the roof replacement.
Although we couldn't achieve everything that we wanted to on the old stone cottage & fit the vapour barrier for the new roof, we cracked on with other tasks around the farm including moving an unhealthy yet incredibly stubborn olive tree!
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it & SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Central Portugal & the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone house, setting up systems to grow some of our own food & finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
    Ricky & Victoria x
    -------------
We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

Hi Victoria! You should always get rid of mole crickets like you showed at 14:11. My grandfather was killing them whenever he sees one in our garden. When i asked the reason, he told me that this bug is eating plant roots so making plants die.

So aggravating for the rain to start and stop and your in the middle of something so important trying to finish and making you quit. But perseverance it key to success. Great idea for removing the tree and transplanting it as to give it a better future. Guess the dogs aren't too happy about the rain either. The pea shoots are wonderful and hope they produce for you. Great job.

We sure could do with some of your rain. We here, in Australia, have a bit of a drought. It's also our bushfire season. The ground has gone hard from lack of water and when it does eventually rain it is a torrential downpour. The ground is so hard the water runs off and the floods come. That's the way it is here. I love the way your house is coming along. It's going to be beautiful.

OK...I don't know why it works, but it works. My dad was a carpenter for over 40 years. He taught me this one. When chucking something to some one on a roof...Try to hit them in the mouth. Don't try to knock their teeth out but aim at their mouth. Person on the roof doesn't need to stab to catch. Sees the object coming with both eyes. And...I never missed anything my dad threw to me (or at me) on a roof!!! Go Figure.
Thanks for your time and I hope the rain gives you a break.

That ugly bug, kinda transparent one...eliminate it permanently. It will ruin your plants! They're sometimes refered to as potato bugs in the 🇺🇲.

Brilliant video and I know there are going to be lots of 'you should have done it this way' comments. So here's mine - use water! Lots of it. Once you have a nice trench around the trunk flood it with water. Keep on flooding it until the soil basically turns to soup. The tree will give up its grip far easier. Same goes with getting tree stumps out. 😍😍😎😎

Probably too late to suggest this but if you need to remove the tarp to do roof work try leaving it fastened down on one side and just peel back enough to allow you to work, then if it rains it's a quick and easy job to cover up again. I'm trying to decide where Vicky's accent is from and I am thinking it is east midlands ?

Don’t worry too much as the root ball Is non existing generally 2 cuts are done one depending on size as you said 30 cm for that size tree then leave for 3 months and make a further cut 10 cm ring from 1 st cut therefore capturing the feeder root regrowth this is generally at the plants drip Line at outer tips of it , my friend transplanted a 5 metre liquidambar, It didn’t look back , the only thing I would suggest is to remove some foliage only 15 cm it just helps with sap distribution , same principle as bonsai loose 1/3 of roots lose 1/3 of branches , as you said dead of winter is best another channel dug out a olive with same height but 15 times the foliage , left in 40 degrees heat no dirt planted next day no cut back , like watching a train crash sadly , my house in a rainforest in Tasmania used iron nails all rusted , boards started to fall I sourced galvanised heaps better , so scary when wind and tarps get going , nature 😮
