Our STONE HOME RENOVATION Just Got REAL MESSY!

  • Tackling a stone home renovation in your spare time, you sometimes have to change your plans once the project is in full swing. Renovating a house with no experience means you're taking on most tasks for the first time and therefore enormously underestimate how long things will take! Your renovation timeline starts to fall behind, the seasons change, and you have to adjust some of your original ideas for quicker ones to try and get you back on track. In our case, we decided to rebuild the top of the stone walls with red bricks (tijolos in Portuguese). The exposed brick was always going to be temporary, but we weren’t prepared for quite how controversial they’d be! 😂
    Let me tell you, there have been some strong opinions about them, but this week they will be disappearing as we begin to render our tiny house - DIY style! 😬 SPOILER ALERT Things are gonna get messy!
    Although we’re focusing our efforts on the little home renovation, that doesn’t mean that progress stops on restoring the rest of our abandoned farm. We gave our veg garden a much needed upgrade with a simple drip irrigation system, plus a reluctant Teddy and Poppy get a bath 🛁 to wash off the dirt from lots of long days playing on the farm! 🐕 🐕
    ** Wood Chipper - amzn.to/4ahCaqJ
    (This isn’t a paid advert, we’re just really impressed with the product! However if you do use our link to buy one, we will get a small referral fee 🙂)**
    LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it and SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Portugal and the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone home, setting up systems to grow some of our own food and finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
    Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
    Ricky and Victoria x
    -------------
    We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
    We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

    Tip - put CARDBOARD down before the wood chips. The cardboard will kill out the grass & weeds and will break down naturally. The next raised beds you make, put down a layer of cardboard then a fine mesh wire. The cardboard will keep out the weeds and the wire will keep out the critters like moles.

    • @GRIMRPR6942
      @GRIMRPR6942 Před 19 dny +11

      When doing that make sure you remove any tape that may be on the cardboard (boxes) as it doesnt usually break down very quick.

      I do this all the time. It’s brilliant and I end up with rich soil I can grow well in. Last about 2 years before needing to be done again.

      @jdxx59 Před 19 dny +2

      Good advice, it’s exactly what I do, but looks like they have already done it. When the grass and weeds start poking through they might do another layer with cardboard under. Grass and weeds are way more vigorous in the warm weather, unlike the UK. I am in the tropical north of Australia and we average 32deg C every day so everything grows before your eyes!

      We actually did this within the beds but just didn’t have any spare cardboard when putting those chips down. Got our hands on some big boxes the other day though so will lay it down on the rest of the paths 👍🏼

    Great video. Builders tip for your paddle mixer to clean it. Get plastic barrel, cut down to the length of paddle. Half fill it with water and 3 spades sharp sand/grit. Spin your mixer in cleaner barrel eveytime you use it. No need to ever empty or clean barrel just keep using it. And if you can get spare M14 paddles go for the longer 750mm paddle. As taller guy you'll thank me.

    I was surprised in the last video that you had apparently purchased new roof tiles instead of cleaning the old ones. I've seen them last 'forever'. Also, when you build a new road, you may consider putting down some old tires and filling them with the aggravate, so that the rocks don't fly off and necessitate putting them back at some point.

    In the US, fortunately I use drip irrigation where holes are already punched and kind of a flat hose and I just lay that out by the vegetables and the water comes out evenly. If the grass comes through the walkways, you may need to put cardboard down (and watered) before adding the wood chips.

    I would loan out the chipper and get help later with the olive harvest. It would seem "the community" would create a sharing process.

    The main problem I see Victoria having with the cement coating is she has a right handed roller and she's using it left handed! lol. Personally I liked the red brick look, But then I don't get out much! Good job Best wishes from Portland, Oregon. USA

    I like the render better than the brick. It goes better with the stone.

      yes, it has a quiet appeal, rather than the candy cane contrast.

    Hello, It's all coming along lovely, the garden beds look perfect & the plants seem to love it there. The stone cottage is also coming along, you have both put in so much work & starting to see big results, looking forward to when you start on the inside. Hope your elbow is something & nothing Ricky & the doctor can drain it for you, might have to strap it up to give it more support, as it is your dominant arm. The dogs seem to enjoy that cool wash, is there a pond/ lake or stream nearby that you could take them to, so they can cool down & rinse the dust off, would be less work for you. Loving the content, keep up the great work. Have a blessed week. L&L

    Oh look, now nobody has to worry bout the red bricks 😉. Cannot wait to see the finished product. So far everything you've done has turned out spectacular. Trial and error to success.

    Going well! I like the way you don't constantly pester people to like & subscribe (so not needed) it gets too much & makes your delightful channel more watchable by far. I wish other channels would adopt that policy. Thank you, very enjoyable 💙🤍❤

      The thought of doing that just makes us both cringe a bit to be honest Ruby. No hate to anyone else who does it though - the channel would probably grow a lot quicker if we asked on every video !😁
