- 'Twas the week before Christmas & work continued throughout on the stone cabin renovation. Luckily we received our long awaited missing roof tiles just in the nick of time to get them on the stone house before the big day arrived! The new roof on this abandoned cabin has definitely tested us, but we're finally starting to see light at the end of the tunnel! 😁

You are a bit of a perfectionist. It shows in your roofing concrete foundation and how you screwed down all the boards instead of nailing it. And the detail of the mortar finish work. That roof isn’t going anywhere! Maybe stucco the outside of the walls if you want a finished look? Or just plain stone if you want more of an aged / grounded look. Very well done sir!
In the end it’ll be a mix of both. Stucco on the brickwork & pointed stone everywhere else 😎

Not only in North America. I live in Argentina 🇦🇷 🇦🇷 🇦🇷 and I went twice to UB40 concerts here in the second largest city of the country: Córdoba. Just yesterdey y translated and made the subtitles archives for Where did I go wrong; Here I Am and their version of I Got You Babe 1985 with CHRISSIE HYNDE. Red red wine is in my archives since I bought my first computer.
I´m a manly man, I can do bricklaying, reformed my house bringing down some walls and building aoters, I did flooring but can also make cake decoration. What´s more, I baked and decorated the 5 tier cake in an all-white fondant (cinq étages I do not know how is that called in English, that´s correctly said I hope). If I did, you can start now practising and the nest year you´ll be selling wedding cakes.

In Germany we dont cement the Center tiles anymore. We have a system to screw them and under them we have a roll that seals. We are pretty happy here with the new solution.
They have dry ridge systems here too but they’re not as common 🙂

That's great work on the roof tiles, well done you! May I suggest you gently warm the fat/suet/lard before mixing with the nuts? It makes it so much more malleable and easier to fill the pine cones! Which is a lovely thought for the birds. Congratulations also on the quality videography - super job. All the very best to you both for 2024 - keep safe!

The half tiles are a good decision. I like them.People cut the whole tile in half because of the half tiles are more expensive and I don't like that.

I enjoyed the bird feeding project as well! I like the idea of the different nut mix with lard you used on the pine cones and orange halves. I luke to use an orange sliced in half and skewered on a rod with the orange facing out. It attracts a variety here (southern Illinois) called orioles. A gorgeous little bird.
I’m in Texas and we absolutely know red red wine. I hope you went back and fixed that one roof tile that popped up. It was right before you showed the pinecone in the tree.

I realise you are doing a traditional Portuguese style roof but I am always surprised at the lack of eaves, particularly as I understand Portugal gets very hot in summer.
Here in Australia many traditional houses were built with eaves that overhang the walls and open verandahs ( porch? ) to shade the walls and help with keeping the house cool during the long,hot summer months. I assume the difference is because winter is more of a challenge in Portugal.

There will be an overhang on the front & back but we haven’t put the first row of tiles on yet because it will be supported by brick which we still need to build up (hence why the place looks so weird at the moment with the exposed concrete ring beam). There will be a veranda on the front too but we’re going to add that towards the end once the interior is finished

The tiles may be a bit more expensive but the finish you get is far superior to the 'regular' tiles. A good call. You did a good job with the placement and pointing of the ridge tiles too. The roof now looks like it was done by a professional. Continued success in the New Year :)
