It's time to finally tackle the dreaded concrete "mortar" that has been slopped all over our little stone house. Why did someone in the past make such an awful mess on such a beautiful old stone cottage? Who knows?! One thing we do know, WE HAVE TO FIX IT! So Victoria's picking up the SDS & chipping away at it. Whilst she's busy with that, Ricky's continuing with stone & brick work on the gable end.
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it & SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Central Portugal & the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone home, setting up systems to grow some of our own food & finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
Ricky & Victoria x
-------------
We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

Victoria makes me proud to be a woman, shes tough but soft, hardworking, beautiful inside and out. Nurturing and good-hearted. Youre nice too Ricky 😅
You’re very kind Patsy. Thank you ❤
Victoria, I have lived my life going Mach 1 with my hair on fire. I didn't want to die with having regrets! Lol! I'm 62 now and have had to slow down, (darn). Someone told me the other day that I was a Renaissance Woman because I've learned. I belive I can also pass that on to you. You are well on the way to becoming a Renaissance woman! Keep up the great work.
I’ve watched the whole series and enjoyed your progress. The two of you are so natural and likable. You hooked me with the Poppy episode. How could I not follow such a couple after that?
Thanks for following along Laurence 😊
When cutting stone and steel, a paper mask is a great way to keep your lung’s healthy. 😊
You need more than a paper mask here. A proper respirator is required for stone/brick dust.
@@AvroBus if you work professionally every day yes. But twice a year outdoors won’t do no harm.
Said it before, but rescuing Poppy and giving her a wonderful 10/10, loving, doggy life is one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in many a year. ❤
It was definitely a big curve ball at the time but zero regrets. She’s an absolute blessing 😊
After years of mandating masks, you would thing people would have learned how they work and what particles they protect you against. Seems like all the DIYers on CZcams were the only ones not getting the memo. A 3M 7500 or 6000 face mask with a pair of FFP3 filters is just a few bucks and saves you from awful life down the road. You gotta wonder why no one on CZcams uses one.
I agree that when working with things that produce dust and small particles, one should be wearing a mask to protect their lungs.@@IlfStoyanov
Thank you! Thank you! .,.. I'm 83 years old, in Florida, USA and your POSITIVE, loving, music .... just great videos are so welcome on Sundays and I find that since I found them my Sunday chores after watching them have me doing them all with a smile in my heart and on my face!.... Thank you so much!
Thank YOU SallyBeth for watching! Glad you enjoy the videos each week ❤
Don't you mind the people that can't appreciate the hard work you have put into the roof. I am pretty OCD and would hire you any day off the week. Your work is done to perfection! I truly love watching your videos. I think you guys make the cutest couple ❤. Greetings from South Africa 😊
Thanks Sonya 😊 I don’t think people were necessarily being critical, just confused by the strange order in which we’re doing things 😁
@@LifebyLivingI fiqure you always do your homework and know what you are doing. It’s all a learning process and you are both pretty smart cookies with lots of gumption.
Agree, they are a delightful couple and work hard.
@@LifebyLiving
Nothing strange about you pair. A joy to watch and learn from your example of integrity and kindness
Strongly agree with others who’ve suggested adding masks to your safety gear. I know they get hot, but construction dust is no joke! And yay! you made balm! Spa day for the pups! Kudos on all the hard work! Have a great week and stay safe❤
Ricky, I never doubted your roof plan. Everything you do and Victoria too, turns out just as you planned it to. Your hard work and perfection show your talents and learning skills. I always learn a lot from watching you two do your tasks and bring your dream cottage to life. I wish every one could relax a bit and wait till your done before they doubt your reason for doing things as you do.
Thanks Pat. Hopefully the proof will be in the pudding!😊
That roof will be there in a hundred years. Fantastic job of work
Oh you guys the dogs are such sweethearts, watching them get the treatment for their noses and paws. I think they loved the attention and care. Very nice vlog. See you soon. ❤
Yes, a good-fitting respirator is a must, even when working outside, when mixing or removing silicates. Sadly, we know many people who have died from silicosis due to their previous employment handling such materials. The disease catches up to people later and cuts their life short. It's a rough ending. Also, a paper mask is not enough.
It's wonderful to see Poppy getting the tender loving care she deserves.
I hope you will be pointing with lime mortar…the home can breath and also remove carbons dioxide from the inside! It lets moisture out and you won’t have damp bit…cement mortar will absorb water and you will have damp❤
That’s the plan!😊
Lime mortar would have been the way to go for bedding in the ridge tiles . The terracotta tiles can move in high winds , using lime mortar that retains some plasticity , staying in place between the ridge tiles and terracotta tiles . Cement mortar will crack and fall off from between the ridge tiles and terracotta roof tiles in due course . However I hope this doesn't happen to your roof . Very best wishes from Richard .
YES THIS IS THE WAY TO CUT THE BRANCHES AROUND THE TREE . WITH AN AXE . I HAVE EIGHT FIELDS OF OLIVE TREES AND I DO THIS VERY OFTEN .........❤ 🇬🇷
So much quicker & a cleaner cut!
No matter what job your doing always wear a good mask
Poppy is such a lovely dog. She really landed on her paws when she stumbled onto your property. Teddy and Poppy love all this paw salon treatment. I love it that they are so well treated and loved by you two, as they should be.
Omg, that last bit with Victoria and Poppy!! So sweet♥️
I absolutely love this channel! Ricky and Victoria are the perfect pair. The explanations are informative, easy to follow and; more show and tell versus talk, talk, talk like other channels. They always make me smile. Cannot wait to see the windows! Thanks team😊
Great progress! Such a shame there are so many keyboard warriors who like to criticize things. Your methods are just that... YOURS. No one who isn't there laying hands on the work, has any place in telling you that it isn't being done to their liking or correctly.
SO true.....but....as this is CZcams....and all the world's an effing expert.....
!!
I think most criticisms have come from a place of confusion because we’re doing it in such a strange way 😁
@@LifebyLiving very well could be! I see so much similar behavior on other channels.
I love the way you treat and love your dogs. They just ask nothing but love. ❤ My husband and i renovate 2 old houses some times we think it was madness but at the end it was so nice. You just go on you will come to the end. We live in Sout Africa and love your channel...my English not so good😅😊
We often think it’s madness too!😂
So loved how the dogs enjoyed their paw balm at the end 😊So sweet to watch! Great work on all your projects, exciting to see how the trees do too. You are full of good ideas!
It is wonderful to see you trying new things for the olive trees. Good luck, hope it works. You both are awesome. Watching from Canada 🇨🇦.
Fingers crossed they work!
Aww your dogs getting a pampering too with your home made balm....how lovely. Hey Ricky shorts in January hey nice one. Barn is looking good both of you. Well done xx
Thanks Gaynor!😊 It was 20 degrees celcius that day…in January?! Got to love the Portuguese weather ☀️
The house is looking better with each project you work on. That was a super idea about the olive oil and mint for the pups feet. Couldn't believe they would let you touch their feet to rub it in. One of mine wouldn't sit still long enough for it, but would enjoy it if she would let me. Dogs are a pain and blessing at the same time. Like kids.
Haha we hear you Cathy!😁 Can’t imagine life without them, even though that day will unfortunately come at some point so making the best of every day whilst we can 😊
Watching from Zimbabwe. Love watching you two get on with chores, reno, garden, etc. You two are a beautiful team, full of positive attitude. Onwards and upwards ❤
Thanks Cynthia 😊
Good luck with the replanted olive cuttings. And as others have said some additional safety equipment will have both long and short term benefits to your health and comfort.
Proper stonemasons now...well done! Cheers guys and thanks for ur cool content...always fun to watch!:)
Haha not quite but we’re trying!😊
To hell with peoples criticism! You are both doing a wonderful job!!
You got a sponsor? That is awesome! Very professional, job well done. Also, what a cool product! A nice thing to have. I hope stihl or bluetti is next for you. All the best!
Get some anti-vibration gloves, no more sore hand's.
What a lovely episode! Going great guns on the roof and concrete removal, and apothecarising for the animals as well😄. Good luck with your olive cuttings Victoria. I hope they take.
Great work on the house and fingers crossed the olive branches take and become trees. Love watching the paw balm process, and seeing Ted and Poppy enjoying it x
Poppy is enjoying her day at the spa getting the balm. It’s so cute!
Victoria, my sister says that she found that the cutting of acacia trees should be no longer than about 3 feet because otherwise the root structure is inadequate to feed the longer (larger) cutting.
Hi guys....
Tip... a much quicker and easier way of experimenting with olive cuttings :- dig a trench somewhere shady and close to where you can easily water....
.... Line out lots of cuttings, say, 30cm apart and at least 30cm deep. After at leat a years growth, check, in winter, for rooting..and transplant, carefully, any which have survived....!
And, be aware these trees are for your grandchildren...😂
I understood that the shoots from the base of the olive tree was root stock, which did not fruit and the productive olive was grafted on. No reason why you could not grow the root stock and eventually graft the olives you want onto them. This info was from another Utube and could easily be not true.😮
I'm learning so much patience and I feel so much joy watching your videos, guys. The changes you make on your home are a great inspiration to people like me who are only starting their journey. Thank you for these contents!
Another great video loved seeing the dog get a pamper. Stay safe and take care x
I make paw salve and add rosemary and oregano which have some antibacterial properties and are safe for dogs in case they lick it off.
Like the herb addition! Will try that next time 😊
Good afternoon to you both, each small job is another step closer to achieving your dream, and fair play to you Victoria for having a go but also doing a very good job, you never fail to amaze me what you have achieved since you've had your beautiful land, and good luck with your experiment with the olive trees.
Ricky I think your awesome doing everything you do considering your not a builder etc.
Thank you Sonya 😊 We’re giving it our best shot!
You should be able to buy somewhere nearby a pair of anti vibration gloves ,they look a bit weird but they do work !
Thank you for the videos....... Love and peace X
Hey there, so good to see your house is coming along, it's gonna be beauuuuutiful. I put 1-2 drops of olive oil into my cats food. It's good for their coat, nerves, tendons, skin, heart, brain ... and yours is for sure healthier than the one I buy from the store. I have 2 olive trees in my garden, and I hope, this year my back pains will let me work on these and other trees. What you cut off, we call them POLLONI in Italy and yes You can create more olive trees from them.
A little olive oil on your pups food is WONDERFUL for their coats. It helps with dry skin & if ya put a bit of RAW garlic in their food from time to time it will leach thru the skin and act as a flea repellant. And, olive oil is WONDERFUL for your own scalp as well. Wet your hair, rub in a little oil into your scalp & wrap up your head in a warm wet towel. When the towel gets cold, wash your hair a usual, you may need to wash a few extra times to get the oil out. You will see the results immediately. No more store bought scalp conditioners.
Please wear a mask when drilling into your walls or mixing cement and especially when using a grinder. Take it from someone that suffers from respiratory issues that have lead to other problems not having worn protection from dust when I was younger!!
This couple are more than up to the task, how can you everyday find stamina to carry on.....
The dogs look like they enjoyed their paw massages! 😉 Taking the concrete render off (who in their right minds - ok, they might not have known any different back in the day...) will be a lot of work, but worth it in the long run!
two possible options for removing the concrete from the face of the stones: 1) Industrial vinegar 45/47% put in a sprayer and apply or 2) Muriatic acid (also sprayed on). Need to gear up for both options.
Well done to both - especially removing the pointing.
Thanks John!😊
Very good
This is one of few channels that I hit the like button at the start of video.😊
A+ for removing concrete
All I can think when I watch these videos (and see how hard you both work) is how do Victorias nails stay so nice 🥰 mine split so easily.
😁 honestly think it’s just genetics! Paint them from time to time but that’s all
Awesome chapter, see you next week 🎉
The dogs loved their spa day. I even wrote down the formula. Congratulations, the house is looking great.
Thanks Maria! It’s a good formula. We’re going to experiment with adding more olive oil next time
as we say in portuguese..."Valente Mulher"...👏💪👏
Ricky, that roof will be there long after the critics, and Victoria what a paw treat for the pooches. Regs, Paul, Wales 👍👍
coming along......thanks to your hard work......thanks for the ride.............
I predict 100K subs before the end of 2024! I love you guys (without sounding creepy. LOL) and so do a bunch of other people! As always . . . love and hugs from me in New Mexico USA.
What a great watch on a cold Sunday afternoon! Brilliant video work girl! Love the attention to detail regarding the roof apex and re-pointing the walls - can't wait to view your progress. Thank you for all the time and trouble you take editing and uploading your videos, they are very much appreciated! Keep safe.
Thanks for watching Dave 😊
I think the pups really enjoyed the balm. Lovely video all around. 👍
I make a drink of ,tbl apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, olive oil, honey in the morning and evenings. Half a cup water. Takes care of a list of problems
A pinch of baking soda, black pepper and turmeric in the morning and at night. It'll strengthen your immunity against anything. Those hounds are wonderfully entertaining. True?
That stone will stay with me now, forever, its special.......
Soft paw pads could be detrimental to both dogs as you are on rough ground. But time will tell if you see them constantly licking their paws. As for the pointing and removing , I think its good that Victoria gets to grips with power tools.
They both have a tendency to get rough, cracked pads so the balm will do them good. Ordinarily we have to buy one so this will save some €€€
Always a joy to watch!!
Wow! I hope those suckers grow into trees. That would be amazing! Victoria, I think you are definitely the right one for the job of removing the concrete. It takes a lot of patience, but you're making excellent progress.
Cool to see progress 🙂 By the way, if you will move on to next stage and will be worrying about concrete leftovers on stone - use blast sanding machine it will not only remove concrete but as well residue of algea. As well when using mortar to fill gaps try to find out about mixing lime into mortar like it used to be done even in ancient Rome, its self-healing mortar because of lime crystals filling gaps, cracks etc (that's why we can still some ancient aqueducts, and new homes turns into rumble 😉 Other thing as well, when fixing next roof, try to left more overlap and this will keep elements away from walls. Anyway I keep fingers crossed as its amazing place you got and endless possibilities for olive garden, etc etc. Well done ❤
Your house looks fabulous, good job on all your hard work.
Love the paw balm! And the house is coming along so nicely!
Thank you again for yet another most enjoyable video, I look forward to seeing them each week, warmest regards from Lilian in Wollongong NSW AUSTRALIA
Just began watching Chipping Away. Just watched Victoria's segment about the A1 water filter by Waterdrop. Wow!!!! Victoria your segment about the Waterdrop was a home run, well done.
great job your both doing, best of luck with everything
You did a wonderful job on removing the concrete
Lime mortar would have been the way to go for bedding in the ridge tiles . The terracotta tiles can move in high winds , using lime mortar that retains some plasticity , staying in place between the ridge tiles and terracotta tiles . Cement mortar will crack and fall off from between the ridge tiles and terracotta roof tiles in due course . However I hope this doesn't happen to your roof . Very best wishes from Richard .
Can't wait to see how the inside comes together. The stone and the roof are looking amazing. I love cozy places to relax in and with all the olive trees around, this looks like it will be one of those places. Love watching it come together. The dogs are great. Bless you both.
You & me both John! Can’t wait to get onto the interior work!
I love watching your videos, you are both always so chipper, and you work well together. i remember the first video when it was only Ricky, and how nervous he seemed, but now you are both professionals at this game! Congratulations on the success of your channel, and it's lovely to see that you are getting sponsors now too. Onwards and upwards!!!
You can use normal pool acid to remove the concrete on the face of the stones. Remember to wear a mask and flush it with water afterwards.
Your doing a great job . Chipping all that concrete out is a real bind ,but it will look so good once done correctly . As to the cement on the face of the stones . You could use hydrochloric acid ( stone cleaner) or get an air compressor and a needle gun ? Most importantly ,Please use a mask when cutting stone and creating dust . Stone dust is really not good for your lungs !
Hi guys you are both doing an awesome. My husband and I came to Crete nearly 9 years ago and we would buy heaps of cases of water bottles a week as the drinking water is not great here either. We brought an on the counter water filter called a Berkey and our filters last for 10 years. There are others that last for 1 year. For us personally it was one of the best investments as we hated seeing all that plastic waste.I did use some of the plastic bottles as mini green houses for seed starting in the winter to get a head start on my veggies.Keep up the great work guys and look forward to watching your amazing journey.
Thanks Jo 😊 Buying so much bottled water was something that neither of us like doing so this will be a huge improvement!
Watching you channel is always fun and uplifting ❤️
Watching you two ❤
I am very invested in seeing if the Olive tree experiment works, well done for following the locals they know the right way!!
Great vid, good progress. Have a great week. 😊
Yes I agree with all the comments a mask is a must for both of you working with stone and cement.😘
I just love some of your
UK slang words!!!! I have to look them up 1) their funny words, 2) I have no idea what they mean. Today's word was "sozzled"!!! When you said that I had to giggle! So you feel "very drunk"?? 😂🤣 Must be the heat! ❤🇬🇧👍🇺🇲
Thank you! Living the life. ❤
Hello you hardworking Couple,
Because you are such a refreshingly delightful couple as are your dogs, people are genuinely concerned for your long term health.
Perhaps do some research on health issues regarding working with concrete?
The music you choose is enjoyable and not intrusive.
Your dogs are a joy to watch and so loved and cared for.
Victoria seems to be always up to something which is fun to watch as well. And Ricky and his smile is a splash of joy.
Thank you, cant wait to see the finished roof it looks brilliant so far.
Kind regards and intentions
K
Aah, Sunday. Ricky and Victoria day. Thanks for brightening my day 👍
This is quite the adventure you two are enjoying. Yes, enjoying I think is the correct word to use. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
I'm so enjoying watching you two. The superhero music you play while performing your tasks is hilarious -- and appropriate! The doggos seem happy with their balm, the olive tree shoots look like they want to thrive, and the house gable is astoundingly even. Looking forward to more.
Hi to you both. I really enjoyed this video, thank you. Victoria, the concrete removal did look tough on the hands but the stone work looks better for it already.
I retired yesterday. I had been running a pub for 9 and a half years.
I now look forward to more time for me, our garden and being creative. You two work hard and it gives me inspiration to tackle jobs that I might never have done. I look foward to your next video x
All natural stone have bed & a head it relates to how the stone was originally formed, an old quarryman once explained this to me I was trying to split a fairly big boulder he stood and watched me for while he then turned the boulder soft was sat on its bed hit with the hammer and it split like a log he explained that it takes several years to become proficient.
Love watching you guys.
Love your show, your personalities & the love you put into everything you guys work on.
Very relaxing.
The balm ingredients are wonderful! Hope you have good results for the dogs. Stone cabin looking better each video. Pointing will take some time, but I have seen results from other channels and it will look fantastic! GOOD LUCK 💚
❤
Love watching you all 😊😊😊
Great video as always guys. Let us know (if you don't mind) in a bit what you think the outcome is of using the balm on the doggy paws; I'd be very interested to know if it is beneficial for them, thx.
Will keep you posted 😊
Even your dogs benefit from your inventive home crafts. Another episode that I enjoyed watching. Thank you
Father Ricky sploshing holy water on the building before he lays his bricks lol. I make soap with olive oil just for washing my face is lovely.
