BEFORE Interior Designer Training: My Hidden First YT Video
Wow! SOOO much can change in a year. Granted nearly everything in the house was leftover from our combined previous apartments in NYC-but I’m not talking about the house aesthetic.
Both Jerry and I have also changed. Working on our home for the last 11-months has led to us being physically and mentally healthier. I was dealing with hormonal issues and mild depression since 2021. This had really taken its toll on me. When we found our way to this little 2-bedroom mid-century cottage, everything started to change for the better.
We got outside more, worked on our 5-acres and transformed this previously neglected rental house into a much loved home. My stress level started to subside as I finally felt a sense of purpose and reawakened a childhood passion for creating spaces.
I look at this video and realize that I learned so much about decor that I didn’t know before my training. I have grown so much!
Also can I say a little about the lovely people in this little corner of CZcams? You all have been amazing at helping me come out of my shell here. I love connecting with you all and appreciate your positive encouragement. You inspire me to keep creating videos, find new ways to connect with you, and also help you feel the same happiness about home that I am experiencing.
Stay tuned for a 1-year anniversary video! I share the first walk through of our house compared to where we are now. It is proof that thoughtful choices of furniture, decor, art and paint can completely transform a space-no renovation needed.
ALSO, next week-and this is exciting for me-I’m releasing a video to help guide you through my design process so you don’t get overwhelmed, frustrated, lose direction or waste time and money on your home decorating project.
I’m also giving away a mini-guidebook to the first 100 subscribers when they sign up for my newsletter. This will eventually be a class that I will teach online going more in depth than what we do on the CZcams videos. So you know it’s going to be packed with guidance. That’s later this summer, but the mini-guidebook will be FREE and available for a limited time with the launch of next week’s video.
Exciting stuff lovelies!!! I can wait to see all the beautiful changes that unfold over the next year!
Sending you so much love from NYC,
Christina

Small kitchen please❤
You got it!! 😘
At 3:58 the round white "thing" is an old light switch, my grandparents had those in their home when I was little. Nice greetings from Germany!
Ahhhhhhh thank you Susa from Germany for solving the mystery ❤️
Pleaseeee do small kitchens and dining nooks!
Okaaaay 😘❤️🤗
My husband and I recently went to Minnesota, and attended an art pottery tour in the St. Croix River Valley. We saw the work of over 100 artists. It was fun to pick out a few for our home. We focused on practical pieces first, and beautiful pieces that spoke to our hearts second. I was fun to purchase unique art pieces.
Wow Marcia-this sounds like a dream! Unique pieces really make a home feel more personalized. Also what a lovely memory you have connected to all these pieces. Beautiful 🤍
This was so cute! Also, I want you to know, when you were talking to that cat, my dog ran up to me, all."Yes, mommy?"; and then was trying to figure out how my voice was coming out of the TV when she was looking right at me. 😂
Awwww cutie!!! I love it, Kit 🐶❤️ soo cute-thank you for watching, luv!!
You have really inspired me. We are going through a remodel in Tucson & trying to add a Southwest look. We are struggling a little and would be wonderful if you are ever available for a consultation. Thank you for being so different❤
Awww thank you so much. This is a very touching comment. Thank you for being here and for watching, luv. Also, thank you for appreciating me dancing to the beat of my own drum 😘 Oh and I am be available for consults. My email address is christina@casaserenita.com ❤️
Oh! A sneak peek of your house! Cool! I've binge watched 5 of your vids in a row today 😅. The big pond on your property is so COOL! We have a little stream in our woods, but that's the only water we have. I kind of love the outside of our property more than the inside if I'm being honest. Talk about getting some color palette inspo! YKWIM? I think you did a great job reupholstering your bed. And I think the bedding and new furniture pieces you chose are gorg. I wonder if you are going to paint some of your rooms a surprising, rich color? I'm going to paint my kitchen cabinets too. But IDK if I can make them turn out as well as yours did. I really like the contrasting pulls. I absolutely cannot decide what color to paint my cabinets. I've literally been wishy washy over them for m-o-n-t-h-s 😳
Hahaha I hear you! I love the sort of antique white we used. Those pulls were from Amazon and are solid. I can give you the link if you like. I think we’re going to paint the ceiling in our bedroom. It’s a bit dark so I’m thinking like a pretty muted yellow color or a bamboo color-which is my favorite-that sort of yellowish color with a hint of green. Oh the kind is amazing and the woman we buy some of our blanks from is giving me waterlilies! I’m so excited about those!
OMG where can I find that light at 8:18, that is perfect!!
It was sold on first dibs www.1stdibs.com/furniture/lighting/sconces-wall-lights/italian-wall-light-style-arredoluce-gino-sarfatti-60s-silk-shade-e175/id-f_24783002/ I did find a pendant version docos.us/products/diosa-fabric-pendant-lamp
It is stunning! I love it
@@Christina_DiStefano I did some hunting a found a few dupes of this :) I'm currently watching your Foundations of Creativity playlist as I prepare to decorate my first solo apartment. Your videos are so inspiring and helpful, thank you!

@@collettemarquez7851 I think so too 😘
Regarding window treatments and light, if you have a decent view out of the top of your windows (or have beautiful historic windows) I love a tailored light filtering cafe curtain on a tension rod at the sash meeting rail. It may take some looking around or sewing to find something appropriate and not “kitchen cutesy” but cafe curtains can give just the right amount of privacy while still giving you lots of light and a view. You can even hang a plant to cover part of the upper sash and draw the eye without covering it completely if the view isn’t great. I typically want more light and more of a view with some privacy than most other options provide. One other option is a cellular shade that can open and close from the top down OR the bottom up.
I love cafe curtains and actually included them as a suggestion in the Eye Candy video. They’re so lovely!!! 🥰
I just finished watching/listening to your entire “Foundations of Creativity” playlist… I came across your channel 2 days ago!! 😂 I found your perspective on interior design SO refreshing and it’s already making me think differently on how I want to go about decorating our home. Thank you so much for sharing with us your approach to design! God bless!
Thank you Senia 🤗 and thank you for watching all those videos! You were busy, luv!!! I’m beyond thrilled they inspired you and are helping you look at design differently. This is my goal so it makes me so happy to know they are helping you ❤️ Keep me posted on your progress!!
@@Christina_DiStefano I definitely was! lol I’m a first time stay at home mom.. YT and podcasts help me get through my endless daily tasks without going a little crazy. So thank you for helping out with that as well.😅 I will! :) I think I want to focus on textiles right now, linen cafe curtains in the kitchen to help bring in natural light and our bedding desperately needs a refresh. Would love a video on how to go about decorating in rentals. I have the hardest time making big commitments to furniture or even accessories. From my experience, furnishings and decor never look the same when you go from one place to the next. It’s so hard to want to fill up your home with things, knowing you won’t be there forever or even in the next couple years. But then it just never feels like home without adding to it. Thank you so much for your response!! 💖
Hi 👋! What a beautiful home you have. For your 1st video…you did awesome. I love the simplicity and authenticity of this video and all of your others as well. Great job! 👏🏼
Evelyn!! Thank you babe 🤗 You are so kind 🤍 Thank you for watching. I can’t wait for you to see how we’ve transformed it with furniture, decor, art and paint-it’s proof that you can transform a house working with what you have versus totally renovating.
Cute branch!
Haha yes it is!! I’m glad you like it too!! 🤗
Love this type of video. It was also fun to see your first video and to see through your eyes what matters to you. And what a great place is this home. Love to follow how it will develop further.
Thank you Grady ❤️ Our home has evolved so much I can’t wait to share more of it with you! My plan is to film more videos at the house and also film the “how to” educational videos there. Right now I film these who we I can since we are living between two places (one with loud subway noises). I also want to use more personal examples of the things I teach from the house; however, currently limited by spending only two days there. Soon! So many new things coming over the next few months 🤗 Thank you for being a part of it!
Okay, now I'm just plain jealous of you!

What an absolute treat, Christina 🧡 This video is filled with joy, love, caring, gratitude and serenity. Casa Serenita is beautiful, inside and out, as are you and Jerry. Going to Home Depot (we have Bunnings here in Australia), putting together a decoration ('yes, that works. Or does it? Let me try it this way instead. Oh yesss, now it sings.'), slowly furnishing/decorating the home (and enjoying the progression), trying this and that DIY, sharing a home-cooked meal with the love of your life. This describes the rhythm of many of my weekends. This also IS La Dolce Vita for homebodies. Sending hugs J x💫💗💥🏡
Thank you Joanna 🤗 Even in the early stages, like you see here, there was still lots of love inside and outside our little home. Love has a way of transforming the space. I can’t wait to share the 1-year anniversary transformation with you! It has changed so much and stands as proof that furnishings, decor and paint can transform a home 🤍
Darling video from a darling girl!
Awwww 🥰 thank you for watching Izzie!!!
I love this! I enjoy your appreciation for nature and all the gratitude of a chill day.
Hi Nicole!! Thank you for watching! So much gratitude 🤍
Your living room’s architectural layout is sooo ideal to me! Love that the fireplace is opposite from a bay window, and that there’s a third spot for a TV so you don’t have to put it above the fireplace. It’s not too large, but big enough to float the furniture off the walls. Cozy perfection.
Great!!! I’m so happy this lil old video could inspire your living room layout. That’s always a win in my book 😘
You are just so darn huggable!!! Your place looks amazing! And....Jerry ....the wreath looks great! Admit it!
Hahaha I love it!! And I’m going to tell him too! And oh yes Jerry-it will make its way back into circulation at the end of summer :) Right backatcha, luv 🤗
Great one. Inspiring!
🤗 thank you Christina!!!
I love your videos. Very helpful commentary. Everyone I know hangs pictures way too high. It drives me crazy. I too have a studio art degree. The pictures look like they are hanging from the ceiling.
Hahaha so you feel my pain?! I get it though-who taught them how to hang pictures? Probably no one. Until now…😉
LOL, one of my cats just showed up wondering why she was being called!
HAHAHA I love it 🤗🐈🐈⬛
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, Christina. I loved seeing glimpses of your casual weekend around the house. You putter with styling vases and blooms like I do. We think alike! Hope you include more of this type of video. And the ginger kitty…love kitty cuddles too! 🐈⬛🐶🩷
Thank you so much Karen!! I appreciate you saying this and am happy you’re here for it! Oh yes, it’s always a work in progress for me! 🐈 The Home Depot kitty 🧡🐱 I heard one of the customers adopted her.

Thank you for watching, Sophia! 🤗😘
5:48-6:02: great tip
Thank you! It’s kind of my stand back and think on it design philosophy 😊
Ha! I log onto CZcams with my morning coffee and here's your new video. You're so funny! The more recent vids you've made are great, don't get me wrong. They are missing that cute, light humor you have hiding in there. I really love all the natural materials you use and also those cool wooden sculptures you had in the living room. And oh my goodness you have painted a TON. Wow!!
Oh yeah! I have boundless energy and was working like crazy in my studio for a solid year. Thank you Timi for your kind words! I get shy showing that side of myself and find that jumping into teaching mode feels more comfortable. I do want to come out more in the future videos, maybe a vlog here and there perhaps. It’s all still me, but the more I make these videos, the more comfortable I get with showing all sides-well most sides anyway!! Haha 🤗
@@Christina_DiStefano I totally understand. I am super reluctant to be on camera even for family photos and videos! It's good to have a "mental home base" I think. Especially when your doing something new and not necessarily in your usual comfy spot. Now that you won't be going between two homes, you think you'll get another kitty 🐈? We have 3 😅
Oh yes!!!! I want a cat, a dog and maybe a couple chickens!! I can’t wait. I miss Harriet so much. My sweet black kitty, she was very loving. She was there with me, sleeping by my head every night for 17 years.
I’m an animal lover 🐈⬛🐈❤️🐶🐓
@@Christina_DiStefano Me too! We just moved to a little 6 acre homestead in KY from San Francisco. I want all the animals 😅 dog, chickens, maybe some Indian runner ducks to help in the garden. If I can talk my hubby into it, we might even get a mini donkey. I've never had property before. And the house is a super duper fixer upper. That's why I started watching your videos! I watch your vids and then try to incorporate what I learned into painting, lighting, window covering, flooring choices for my super scruffy farmhouse. Wow, you had your sweet kitty for a long time! We recently lost our 14 year cat Oreo. He was so awesome to our young cats. Cats are so awesome. I may become a crazy cat lady in my old age 😉
Great explanation! Love your channel!

Your wooden lion looks like the Lion of Lucerne. I would have adopted him as well. Beautiful!
He is!! Joanna, another subscriber mentioned this too! I looked it up and sure enough-he is just that. My grandfather’s family is from Switzerland and so it’s somehow meant to be 🤍
Totally agree about the importance of naming your house. We do the same. Ever since I lived in San Diego and saw a house with the name "Shangri-la," I've wanted my own Shangri-la! We have found that the names we pick that have any type of sophistication, never stick for us. It's the weird nickname that comes from some ludicrous moment that does. For example, my husband and I helped my MIL revive and rebuild a 1950's farmhouse on 80 acres, that had been used and abused by it's former owner. There were many moments of tears from all of us, like finding a bowl of water with some random pantyhose soaking in it under the sink. Rats under the cast iron bathtub. A moldy bathroom walk in closet that took hundreds of hours of ozonation to remedy. In one of these stressful moments, in an attempt to sarcastically say "This charming farmhouse," my MIL said, "this farming charmhouse." And it's name, "The Farming Charmhouse" was born! I wanted to name our coastal Florida 1960's modest house something cool and sexy but my husband came up with this bizarre phonetical acronym based on our street and town name and sadly, it stuck! And even sadder, it's perfect! Haha
WHAT an amazing and fun story. You had me laughing out loud and not just LOL 😂 Wow you all got put through the wringer with that house but you did it. Bowl of water with pantyhose yuck 😝 And this “farming charmhouse.” You are gifted at story telling, luv. This had me crying with laughter. Thank you!
@Christina_DiStefano I'm so glad, haha! 😃 We laughed and cried a lot during that ordeal, but it turned out great. She loves it. She's 70 years old and said that it's the first place she's ever owned, where she had total freedom to decorate how she liked. We plan on getting her a metal sign to mount by the front door that says, "The Farming Charmhouse Established 2021" (the year she bought it). Btw, she has 2 horses, 3 donkeys, and now plans on getting cattle. She's living out her cowgirl fantasy! 😄
I love it!! You must get that sign. So good!!
I love it!! You must get that sign. So good!!
I love this. I’m tired of the gray boring stuff and I liked how you talked about adding personal touches
You are the secret sauce babe! You make it interesting 😘
Thank you so much for your videos, Christina. We are going down the coast and hitting a bunch of thrift stores soon and I'm binging your videos for inspo and also for reinforcing my own ideas. I find that I start getting hemmed up and frustrated when I watch other people's stuff. When I watch yours, I write things down in a notebook and get more and more ideas. I find myself asking "WHY NOT???" a lot which makes things so much more fun! I feel like I'm getting a real education here.
Oh wonderful Melissa! 🤗 I’m so pleased to know this and I’m so very excited for your future finds along the way. Sending some love for a safe journey and good thrifting vibes ✨✨✨✨
excellent! 16:10

My unexpected piece is my banjo hanging on the wall in my French country/wabi sabi home. 😂 It somehow works though!
Love it 🪕
Thank you for making me thinking of intentionality and challenge as an opportunity.
Yes! It’s a total mindset shift but that’s where the opportunities live. Good luck babe and keep me posted 🤗
Those curtains over the doors are going to drive you nuts when you can't use the door without the curtain getting jammed, and then the curtain fabric gets pinched and torn. Curtains can work nicely over sliding glass doors - I have one in my bedroom and it's great - but don't use them on a hinged door please! If you have a draughty exterior door, you can very easily put draught seals on it. They exist, they're cheap and easy, and they don't bother anyone once they're in place.
Hi there! Thank you for your comment. Yes they also work great in sliding doors. Regarding a hinged door, one can push the curtain to the side when opening and closing the door. There are also special curtain rods made for this in which you can push to the side with the drape. As with all things we plan to keep long term or used to add beauty to our home, care is needed to prevent damage. I hope this helps!
If you turn your wall of bookshelves into glass-fronted cupboards, you won't have to dust nearly so often and also your books will stay put if you ever have an earthquake.
This is a great suggestion for less dust on the contents of the book shelves. I am concerned about all that thin hanging glass in an area that experiences earthquakes often!
@@Christina_DiStefano Yes, the doors need to be engineered and built for the stresses they're forecast to experience. But that goes for the windows in your house and any other glass fittings too.
Thank you for the tips!!
