  • Whether you are new to vintage shopping or have been doing this for a while, these tips will help guide you to creating a cohesive look and feel in your home.
    I believe there is an art to buying vintage, antique and thrifted-actually shopping for decor and furniture items in general. It requires a trained eye in order to stay true to your vision.
    Here are my tips, how you can do it (and avoid a lot of wasted time and money like me), plus examples from my home in the country and my recent vintage purchases.
    Here is the link ho the Etsy shop with the beautiful herbariums: www.etsy.com/shop/InhabitStyle (He’s about to release a new collection any day now).
    Hope you’ve had a great week!! Sending you so much love from NYC.

    ABOUT ME:
    Hey I'm Christina DiStefano! I am sort of a jack-of-all-trades: artist, sales director for a top NYC real estate development company, certified life coach, yoga instructor, Reiki practitioner, artist (I'm a painter), businesswoman--and now I'm taking on Interior Design via a certification (I'm starting an Interior Design firm in 2024 lovingly called Casa Serenità Interiors). Oh and did I mention I'm leading the renovation of our country home (inside and out)?!
    I believe that home is a sacred place that we nurture, and in return, it nurtures us. That being said, my design process is focused on creating a sanctuary, a place of serenity that truly feels like home.

    I like how you changed the lion's story to a positive one. "He is healing at Casa Serenita." Well of course he is! My first adjective for our new home is "youthful." We are older but I wanted my home to look like younger people live in it. I recently had my landscaper drop by for something and his fiancé was waiting for him in his truck. He said how much they both liked the house from the outside, so I invited both of them in and gave them a tour. They loved it. So I hit my mark on the "youthful" vibe. The rest of the adjectives are cheerful, cozy, Scandi (is that an adjective?) and uncomplicated.

      @ChristinaDiStefanoStudio  Před 2 měsíci +4

      It sounds lovely Shiryone! I think Scandi is now an adjective--yes for sure. I knew immediately what you were referring to. I feel like the old we get, the younger we become--well if we're lucky anyway and it seems that you are! I'm 50 (as of last October) and I feel more like myself than ever before. When I was younger I was too serious so it's good to tap into our younger selves--that side of us never goes away. Okay I'm rambling here but loved what you shared. I hope I get to see pics someday!

    So inspiring, I’m 68, the story of my home is; The Final Chapter. Everything out there in the decorating world is opposite, I don’t need a santuary, my world is already is grey, brown and beige. You have inspired me to write my adjectives; spontaneous, joy, movement; garden inspired, earthy, connected; welcoming, kids, animals, smells, food and; easy, low maintenance, storable.

    I thought I recognised your second lion. I saw it on my trip to Lucerne in Switzerland. It's the Lion Monument, which is carved into the cliff-side in a park in the centre of the city. Gorgeous and powerful. Also, I'm trying to pare down my obsession with buying cute second-hand picture frames, but it's addictive. I can immerse myself for hours by framing various old photos, pages from old art books or prints I get made. Now that I have most of the furniture I need, I change things up with a moving feast of art. Talk about at-home art curation - I've got a new exhibition two or three times a year! ha ha

    • @ChristinaDiStefanoStudio
      @ChristinaDiStefanoStudio  Před 2 měsíci +3

      Thank you Joanna for the background. Knowing this, I find it interesting and a little synchronistic that the monument is in Switzerland. My great, great grandparents immigrated to the US from Switzerland in the late 1800s--so a nice little connection there.
      Also YES on your curatorial adventures! I love that you too have a thing for old picture frames (we're not alone). We sounds so much alike. I also love to take prints from old art books. Such good advice, it took me a long time to learn that lesson myself. I thought, if you really love it, you can make it work. Not always true. Plus, your architecture has to support it. You can’t create a mid-century style in a lake cottage home. Your pot has a boho vibe, so it may be a challenge to incorporate it into your design story. It takes real artistic talent to marry things together. Your first lion is the NYC Library lion, the other is the Lucern lion, the mark is where a spear went into his side. I love nature botanicals too. Recently I tore apart a book , the hidden beauty of seeds and fruits to make an art group.

    Totally agree about the importance of naming your house. We do the same. Ever since I lived in San Diego and saw a house with the name "Shangri-la," I've wanted my own Shangri-la! We have found that the names we pick that have any type of sophistication, never stick for us. It's the weird nickname that comes from some ludicrous moment that does. For example, my husband and I helped my MIL revive and rebuild a 1950's farmhouse on 80 acres, that had been used and abused by it's former owner. There were many moments of tears from all of us, like finding a bowl of water with some random pantyhose soaking in it under the sink. Rats under the cast iron bathtub. A moldy bathroom walk in closet that took hundreds of hours of ozonation to remedy. In one of these stressful moments, in an attempt to sarcastically say "This charming farmhouse," my MIL said, "this farming charmhouse." And it's name, "The Farming Charmhouse" was born! I wanted to name our coastal Florida 1960's modest house something cool and sexy but my husband came up with this bizarre phonetical acronym based on our street and town name and sadly, it stuck! And even sadder, it's perfect! Haha

She's 70 years old and said that it's the first place she's ever owned, where she had total freedom to decorate how she liked. We plan on getting her a metal sign to mount by the front door that says, "The Farming Charmhouse Established 2021" (the year she bought it). Btw, she has 2 horses, 3 donkeys, and now plans on getting cattle. She's living out her cowgirl fantasy! 😄

I can only describe it as rustic with the woods but she was a lady of glam as well. So however she was my grandmother was the same way as well . Another beautiful episode. Thank you for this. I love your herbariums...and your lions :). Nevertheless, it was wonderful to get a glimpse into your process for vintage shopping. Agreed- that it takes some time to find the right rhythm in these things. Like you, before- I was swept away with a love for an individual piece- that after a while, you realise you have collected much in your space, but somehow the pieces don't quite work well together- too disjointed. However, now, *finally*, after years of exploration I can say that I have adapted as well, or at least improved. Visualizing my space, and going for flow and connection between pieces- as they come together in my space, in my story and my particular design vision. Now, pieces sing to me in a much clearer way!

    Very useful video. I notice that developing a discerning eye is connected with visualizing what your space needs. They are more difficult than I thought before and it takes practice. You put them in the context of a homestory, with adjectives, what gives it a frame and reference points. That is very helpful. I realize that I look at my place that way intuïtively, as I consider buying something for my home. I have these reference points, that I also test with images I see and am being drawn to, which helps getting more and more conscious of my homestory. The challenge for me is not to develop a themed home. But in my journey I experience that the more authentic my choices are, the more personal my space becomes. Within a kind of frame, but not stifling. With room for growth and movement into the path your life goes. (I hope my English is well enough that you can understand what I mean).

    " Vintage " is. I have purchased a lot of Vintage clothing/ objects/ furniture... and have. N e v e r seen the amounts these Sites are charging.

      Your welcome! There is definitely a high value on vintage and antique items with more people now (versus in the past and therefore the price has gone up. My suggestion with these sites is first and foremost, to help train the eye on what someone may like and then they can go out to find it elsewhere. This is a big part on shopping second hand and keeping the look cohesive. When we don't have a look or a feeling to move toward, then we end up jumping on too many varied things.
