Ok, the way you held those decks…you were an MTG player?
I have not ever played Magic yet, haha.
This game is so hard 8/. Ive played the core set 4 times. I got my arse kicked each time/
@@snieves4 I've got a video about Top 35 tips for new players you might find helpful - it is a VERY challenging game, but it is absolutely surmountable :)
If i litteraly buy one of those decks, and one standalone campaign, use some proxy tokens, download rules for game i can basically play without core set?
Technically...it is possible. However, you'd have to manually keep track of your threat level, and resources/damage/progress. If you're already familiar with the game this could work, but if you're just starting out I think you'd do yourself a disservice by skipping the core set & Dark of Mirkwood quests, as these will really help you ease into learning the game before being dropped into one of the campaigns that will have many more mechanics and a lot more going on. I wouldn't start there as a new player.
Plus, the core set has a TON of staple cards that are used in the strongest decks, even with a full cardpool.
@@TheGameLocker Plus core box has Legolas which is my favorite hero in this game and has best artwork 😀
Whoops! The flavor text for "Cram" needed more spelling "excercises"!
just started playing ico and shadow of the colossus. the world is a beauty to play
Oh, how I love these videos. I thought I'd known all of the rules and complexities, but you show me what I've missed - amazing! Question, though: Part 2, at 16:00 you use the "Sentinel" keyword on Aragorn to have him defend an attack from an enemy engaged with another player. Did I miss the explanation of the "Sentinel" (and perhaps "Ranged") keywords before this point?
Introduced at 01:56 :)
This was excellent.
Hi there I’ve got a question, Can I assign additional attackers to an enemy even if only one of the attackers is needed to destroy the enemy card? This is so I can exploit Legolas effect. Thank you ! Great series by the at I’ve watched them all.
Yep! Beat that dead horse (or, orc)!
Never noticed the typo on "Foe Hammer" @ 43:34 ! "...delight in the killing of *hte* great lord of the cave." Where you disappeared to bud? We need dream chaser reviews, the repackaged saga stuff and the upcoming Erid Mithrin stuff! 🙏
Hi, I actually just got into solo board games lately and I came across lotr the card game in which I really got interested.. I am planning to get the revised core set soon and I am excited to start playing this.. trust me I have read the rule book online many times and watched a lot of videos too but these videos you made were the best, so easy to understand and get everything to my brain. Kudos to you!
Thank you very much!
As an old player who tries to return to the game, your video helps me to have a clear understanding of the rules. Good job!
So glad it was helpful!
This is such a great video. I'll never remember it all, but it is so great that it exists.
That's half of why I made the video in the first place - so I could try to remember these details myself :D
Are you done making video's? I have really enjoyed your videos
This season of life is keeping me from making more - the door isn't totally closed, but it will at least be a long time until I'm able to make more :)
Extremely good tutorial! Well done mellon!
Nice work, will be returning to this one several times

LOL, I can't un-hear that now :)
Playing two-handed solo should not be a tip for 'new players'.
If by "new players" you mean players who are playing their first few games, I agree :).
This is easily the best instructional video I've ever watched for learning new games. Well done and thanks for sharing
Thank you very much! It was a fun challenge to make :)
Thanks for this video, it’s a great resource 👍🏻👍🏻
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful.
35:25 Interesting that the Learn To Play does not include any mention of action windows during the entire Planning Phase. It allows play of Allies and Attachments only. had my first match, one Rohan Starter deck slightly modified, and the "Back to Basics - A Killer Deck Using Cards from 1 Core Set" by Xanalor. It was a distgusting easy win, with quite sloppy plays. The worst cards never played as they ended up as shadow cards (woot no extra effects). I probably should have asked the other player to pull some of the monsters so i wouldn't end up with so many in front of me. Noticed not many cards ever get drawn. 50 cards is the minimum??? We got to draw about 14 cards each, including starting hand.
Do you mean the "Learn To Play" rulebook doesn't mention that action window? That sounds about right - the concept of Action Windows is really best explained/illustrated in the Rules Reference, not easy to understand to newcomers.
@@TheGameLocker Yeah the Learn to Play rule book. Kinda an important aspect to be also allowed to play actions 😅. Ah well. Today I got more content so I am looking forward to building a Gondor deck, and modifying the Rohan one. With one game under the belt, it feels very resource limited. 1 per hero is slow if you aren't drawing low cost cards. While I could probably insert more card drawers, the chance of them showing up is still largely luck based. I hope there's a way to focus down decks so that they work more consistently. Ah deck building! The cogs in my brain are running at full speed. 😎 I'm loving this. This is so much eaasier to to work with than Arkham Horror.
@@Kindlesmith70 The deck building is my favorite part of this game - enjoy it!
We need videos for the new content!
I don’t think I’m ever going to spent an influence token on the pulsar; as far as I can gather, it simple means I would be forced to spend one action and influence token (which is permanently placed in the sector) on only one activation rather than getting to choose if I spend that token on typically two activations. That one build planet there does not justify the cost in my opinion 🤔
Nabbed me a bunch of stuff for the game. Sadly the ever popular Silvan starter deck ise sold out pretty much everywhere in AU so I had to dig outside for it. I found myself watching another vdeo series by another bloke that explained the various sets. Sure this cost a lot, but then I've paid for the everything of Arkham Horror. I didn't grab all of the revised campaign sets since some didn't sound interesting to me. Would be wild to play one epic campaign from Shadows of Mirkwood to the Vengeance of Mordor, although I bet the player deck would be godly way before reaching the very last scenario, unless there's some rule dictating how many boons you can have in any deck.
Nice, I hope you enjoy it! As for one epic campaign, each one is intended to be standalone, with boons/burdens not carrying over from one campaign to the next, with one exception: The revised core set campaign (with or without the additional 2 quests in the Dark of Mirkwood expansion) allow you to carry over 2-3 boons into your "next" campaign only. They especially help with the Angmar campaign.
You gotta love how "the easy way" and "part 1" seem a contradiction but the guy delivers! Well done!
amazing video!!!! you are the best ! thank you very much!
Excellent. This is the tutorial that finally got my cards out of the box. Cheers 👍😁
Love to see the other sets if you ever have the drive to do an Unboxing & Analysis for those. These videos have taught me a lot about the game. Thank you for the effort put into them.
1:54 Ah yes. technology is always getting better, and this video hasn't aged too well if it implies that games will get better. Everything has been done before, and a lot of times the best aspects of games aren't carried over into the new ones. Well, I guess that depends on what is considered best. If someone thinks invisible walls, clipping, s, bad writing, bugs/incompleteness, unintuitive UIs, poor control schemes, poor audio, lacklustre tutorials, places where there isn't anything to do (empty spaces), illogical puzzles, pixel hunting, convoluted naming schemes, censorship, non-choice choices (it doesn't have significant impact within the game), and more, are the best games have to offer, then they've been nailing it to this very day. There's been years for improvement, but you don't see much of that at all in the gaming market. I guess the most "upgraded" work is method of play, which is virtual reality. Games have grown to take up considerable harddrive space, but that incease hasn't provided an overall better experince. Games that I feel may be worth remembering, cutting out any you've mentioned: Dwarf Fortress. Black & White. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Zeno Clash Jazz Jackrabbit the Myst series. NetStorm: Islands At War Aliens Versus Predator 2 Culdcept The Last Guardian Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. these are certainly in no way the first to do the things they did, but they are very memorable. I have psychonauts and not played it, but there's other games where you play as someone with psychic powers. there's a few of them (not as many as I actually thought).
So this is a Silvan deck ... and this is Galadriel 🤣 One of these things is not like the other it seems. Just hearing the how the deck is supposed to play, I am already in love with it, and Galariel sounds just wonderful. I'm notciing a lot of personal assistants for Galadriel.
Yeah they kind of had to fit all the elves into "Silvan" and "Noldor" for game purposes, unlike the books. But Silvan is definitely one of my favorite archetypes, super fun!
I really love Warhammer: The Adventure Card Game. similar wording, some similar concepts. Easier to learn to play. Just as much a pain to set up and pack up.
I made a video about some really nice accessories that help a ton with setup/teardown. Still can't get around the time it takes to construct decks, but really that's half the fun :)
2 years ago and no links to a buyers guide.
True true, I scripted it but never had the time to film and edit. Feel free to ask me any buying questions :)
@@TheGameLocker Yeah. What I actually wish is for someone to have this mouch time and passion to go through Arkham Horror: The Card Game. I have at one point obtained all there was to this game (besides the sidequests) and no matter how much I go into this game struggle with building decks. It's such a wierd game system that is hard to wrap my head around. I'm not sure if you've ever touched this Fantasy Flight game. I get a game needing to be a challenge, but then there's challenging, and then getting crushed by randomization and insufficient cards that just don't mesh cohesivly. I've had this with Warhmmer Invasion, which felt like pure chaos in balance (no pun intended), and with Arkham Horror which has many that seem like fillers because there isn't anything better. Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game I actually liked, and I found another game created (I think due to the Warhammer one unabale be be added to due to lisencing) called Heroes of Terrinoth. Also great game, almost exactly like Warhammer Quest: TCG. This LotR LCG has many elements of these games, but it has deck building as a component.
@@TheGameLocker Ok. I am going to ask now after much deliberation. Which sets to get? Here is my checklist of thoughts: The most bang for buck, and completeness sake. Highly interested in the Silvan enter play deck, the Valor deck, the Noldor utilizing discard deck, and some form of trap deck. Any/all sets to make some great decks for these four styles would be appreciated. I'm not sure where hobbits fit into these (probably none).
@@Kindlesmith70 For starters - best "bang for your buck" anything is going to be sticking with the revised content (i.e. anything released in the repackaged format starting with the revised core set). Anything in the old format is out of print and expensive on eBay. For Silvan & Valor you'll definitely need both the Silvan and Gondor starter decks (Gondor gives you the basis for Valor and some key Traps). Then I'd get the Angmar Awakened Hero expansion, which gives you most of the Noldor archetype, and some additional Valor cards, and one really cool Silvan ally. Then I'd get Dream-Chaser Hero Expansion to complete the Noldor Archetype, along with many more Gondor cards, some really nice Silvan cards, and a few great Trap cards. Lastly, the Two Towers box will give you some key Trap cards, most notably the Damrod hero who really enables the archetype. The problem at this point is when you get this many expansions, you start to get other cards from other archetypes, that require buying other expansions to "complete". Like, if you buy the Two Towers, you're gonna want the Rohan Starter deck to make use of all the amazing Rohan cards you get (and on and on it goes...)
I've always wanted to play this. Downside is the price tag attached to this game.
No joke - everyone should seriously consider the potential price tag before even buy a core set. For some, this is exactly the type of game they're looking for. I fell into it unsuspecting and got hooked hard. Looking back I kind of wish I hadn't because I wasn't (and I'm still not) in the season of life to spend THAT much time and money on entertainment. If that's what you're after, this game delivers ;)
@@TheGameLocker Hahaha. buying games is almost as addicting as gambling. It's a vice for me, but one I have 3 limitations that keep me a littl bit groundd. One is money, which isn't as huge as a fctaor as the other two. One is storage space, which I don't have a lot of so I have to be picky in what I keep. Last is players who I can enjoy the games with. I don't have many friends, and that is not something I can easily get.
Thanks for the great tutorials! Quick question regarding Direct Damage - in case of a simple 'deal 3 damage' wording it's fine to deal it to an ally with less than 3 hit points left, correct? This kind of chump blocking applies not only to the Combat Damage?
Yes I believe that's correct for direct damage.
You did a fantastic job of teaching this game. You were thorough and didn't talk like an auctioneer on speed so I could follow what you were saying. Thanks! We are gearing up to play this game and I've shared your videos with my friends. And by the way, where did you get that shirt? I need one!
Haha, happy to hear the pacing worked for you! The shirt was a gift from the publisher after my first video :)
Well done
Hey I just bought the core set and the first saga expansion! Now I think I need some player cards. Am I good with the angmar awakened hero expansion or should I wait for the starter decks to reprint (seems out of stock in canada)
This game seems so cruel/brutal! Ive only played Marvel Champions and the card you are pulling here seem much more harsh than in MC.
Brutal it is - but I was also hand-picking encounter cards here. When you start getting a larger cardpool, you really get a lot more options to counter even the worst encounter cards. This game is much more about deck construction than MC is.
Great videos. I want to get into this game and your videos are really helping me and i cannot wait to get it but one thing i am not sure about is the compatibility of the older stuff with the new "revised" stuff. I guess you cannot mix them and they will be making new "revised" versions of the older stuff. Or it doesnt really matter and i can for example buy this new revised core set and then some old expansion and play it together? Thanks
Thankfully, the "revised" stuff is 100% compatible with the older stuff. It's not a second edition, it's simply a repackaging of the older content into fewer boxes, making it easier to distribute and purchase. The order stuff is out of print and more expensive, so I can recommend starting with just the revised core + Dark of Mirkwood. If you are 100% convinced after that that this game is for you and you know you want to be a completionist, and are willing to spend $2-3k to buy everything, then go for the older expansions. Otherwise, sticking with the revised content will certainly give you the best bang for your buck.
@@TheGameLocker Thank you for the answer. I finally wanted to buy it and even though lot of people in my country likes board games and card games, for some reason the LOTR LCG is almost impossible to get, only the basic new revised set, and maybe 1 or 2 older random small expansions on some random eshops, but not much else. everything else is not available or sold out. I know i can have fun with the basic set, but i loved the idea of getting different expansions etc and without it i am not sure anymore.
I was a little sceptical at how long the video was but after trying (and failing) to learn the game solo I watched. You've made an amazing, well paced and incredibly clear tutorial video. Probably the best of any game tutorial I've seen. Thank you so much!
Wow, that's awesome to hear! Thank you so much, I'm really glad it was helpful!
This is incredibley well done. Thanks for putting so much effort into teaching this game!
Thank you very much, sir!
This really appeals to my obsessive details orientated, rules based character haha. What an amazing game to get obsessed with
Haha, I'm glad you found the perfect match!
The way I like to explain supernova. Every turn the supernova gets stronger, so you check your tech score and add a dice roll to see if your team of scientists can handle it So long as your tech tree is equal or higher than the round marker, you have 100% chance to survive
Awesoke video man. Any plans to unbox the fellowship and two towers?
Maybe one day, but no current plans to due to life obligations :)
@@TheGameLocker thanks for replying man. I know the life game all too well - kids have changed everything!
Your missing 1 part of the exclusives, there is 1 more enemy varient for all the neutral enemies
Yeah I only showed the extra content that had additional rules :)
Wish they would make more off these themed starter packs, maybe some fan favourite ones too
That'd be sweet!
Unbelievable detail and clarity - Thanks!
After exhausting all other attempts at an answer I'm "forced" to come back to the guru :) I hope you don't mind. By the way my wife just told me tonight that I've gotten more than my money's worth out of this game now two years going. That's still an understatement to be sure! My question has to do with the word "AT" in the Two Towers Urak-Hai and Grishnakh. The card says "Forced At the end of the quest phase, deal 1 damage to the attached Captive". If so, then a 2 hit point captive hero would be eliminated after the quest phase in the very next round. Reading from the Visions of The Palantir he indicates two rounds before this captive is killed (Merry was my choice) but I'm thinking he'll be gone after the quest phase in the next round. I guess that one can potentially heal the hero in this and in every additional round as an alternative until gathering the strength to dispatch Grishnakh. I'd also be interested to hear how you have dealt with this Orc who can be worse then Ugluk since at least you can plan for the latter. Generally I think my question can be stated as to whether the word "at" occurs just before or just after the end of a phase.
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner - was having trouble finding your comment for some odd reason! I believe "at" the end of a phase is really the last thing that happens before moving onto the next phase. So a 2 hit point captive would last 2 quest phases.
@@TheGameLocker ah, I think what you've stated is that "at" occurs after the "quest resolution" step is over. I've been playing the quest since I wrote and Grishnakh came up during one of the plays. Much to my surprise I was able to dispatch him in the very round that he appeared - just lucky that I had the right cards to do so. Thank you for getting back to me on this.
Really fabulous work. "When explanation is good THEN click like"
Lol, thanks for the chuckle :D
I love these unboxing/analysis videos. I have watched this one twice. Please make more!
Great tutorial. I have a question/clarification. On guarded cards, if the encounter card that is attached to guard it has a when revealed effect, does it get ignored since it was attached and not revealed? Thanks.
The encounter card is revealed before it's attached ;)
I can't seem to find the link to where you purchased those Cubes you use for exhausting? I really want to add those to my collection of this awesome LCG!!
Hi! Just search for 10mm (or 1cm) wooden cubes, you should be able to buy some online somewhere.
