I love the fact they have full play sets. Kids now days don’t know the pain of having to buy multiple core sets to get 3 unexpected courage.
Finally someone is opening it and shows what's inside! :D
Thx
Awesome review and explanation! I'm brand new to the LCG and am planning to buy this core set. This video helped a lot and I can't wait to see your future videos playing with decks you made!
Found your channel as my play group bought all the re packaged lotr lcg stuff and we have been getting into it. Your video on the starter deck and individual card reviews and little tidbits or history on the cards were amazing. Would love to see more of that in the future (Angmar hero box, revised core set). Subbed and looking forward to more content. Also the tips video great!
Appreciate the feedback, thank you! I’ll see if I have time to do a core set card-by-card analysis, I can see that being helpful for people :)
Glad your back with some new videos. Huge fan of your Eclipse vids.
Thanks so much!
Very informative, thanks. Just got this game recently so this was very helpful.
Very well explained ... looking forward to next video
...yea, he's good, I watch all his videos.
I'm new to these games and FFG, so it's kinda nuts to hear that people had to buy two or three core sets back in the days. That's highway robbery.
I was so happy to see that they included 3 copies of each card in the revised core set :D
I was on the fence until I saw three Expected Courages.
I am a new player and can imagine the frustration for the players that played before the new repackaged product! Only getting one Unexpected Courage among a bunch of other amazing cards and only enough token, threat meters, etc for two players? I'm wishing that I could get multiple playsets of some of these to put in multiple decks!
How to learn LOTR: LCG… Watch every TheGameLocker video about it, and then patiently attempt game after game, frequently revisiting TheGameLocker videos until you get good at it! Thanks for your videos! So many other videos on YT are confusing and mangled, but yours make for quick understanding of the complexity without losing sight of the fun!
Lol, thank you very much!
Regarding the storage, I picked up the game two weeks go, only just sleeved the cards and I can tell you all the sleeved cards can fit into one of the large areas. The tokens and dials fit into both of the small areas, leaving the remaining large area for expansions. Now… on with the adventures… at last.
Have fun!
This and starter set video made me sub! Need more lotrlcg content in my life 😅
Thanks so much for the sub! Are there any LOTR lcg topics in particular you’d like to see a video on?
@@TheGameLocker Just in general upgrades to these decks would be nice. maybe one for each? Or wait for Angmar and pick cards to add/remove then.
@@chrisrobin4962 Excellent idea, will definitely consider that!
This is my 2nd video I have watched. I do enjoy the fact you really seem to love the game. I am going to watch the series on LOTR as I am new to the game. I am a board gamer for almost 60 years. I will watch you other viedeo's just a matter of time.
One of my favorites for sure, take your time with it! Thanks for watching!
@@TheGameLocker Thank you for the reply I have all the expansions up to Dream Chaser. Not sure I will get into deck building. But I am wondering if you could give me the pluses for purchasing the Angmwar Heros expansion.
@@douglaspearson4853 I've got a video on the Angmar Hero Expansion showing all the cards included, that should help you decide if it's worth it for you. I will say though that building decks is really the core puzzle of this game. I had not played any games before that asked me to build a deck, but the process of learning how to build powerful and efficient decks to defeat the unique challenges of each quest was an incredibly satisfying puzzle to learn how to do. If you're not sure if you'd enjoy building decks, I'd hold off buying any more expansions until you figure out if you really enjoy that part of the game :). Cheers!
Sold me on the game, great video! Did you get a chance to try those recommended decklists in the Learn to Play guide? Any tweaks to them with what is included in the box? 2:27
Yes I did! They are fantastic. The Spirit/Leadership can beat all three quests in campaign mode solo, and both decks together can beat all three quests as well. I don't think I would change anything really, until you start buying expansions.
So when is that tutorial coming up??
Your videos on this game are in a different level! :)
Not as soon as I'd like, lol. New baby boy is almost here so that might delay production quite a bit. Glad you like the videos, I hope they've been helpful!
@@TheGameLocker Oh I see, I'm sure you'll be able to handle all the challenges that this new quest might bring! All the best for you and your family on this journey!
Just make sure you keep that Unexpected Courage nearby, it may come in handy when you feel exhausted! 😆
+1 on the tutorial video! And just remember, save the Unexpected Courage cards for events like Green Poop and 3 AM Feeding, and quests like Dining Out, and you’ll be fine!
Great videos. I want to get into this game and your videos are really helping me and i cannot wait to get it but one thing i am not sure about is the compatibility of the older stuff with the new "revised" stuff. I guess you cannot mix them and they will be making new "revised" versions of the older stuff. Or it doesnt really matter and i can for example buy this new revised core set and then some old expansion and play it together? Thanks
Thankfully, the "revised" stuff is 100% compatible with the older stuff. It's not a second edition, it's simply a repackaging of the older content into fewer boxes, making it easier to distribute and purchase. The order stuff is out of print and more expensive, so I can recommend starting with just the revised core + Dark of Mirkwood. If you are 100% convinced after that that this game is for you and you know you want to be a completionist, and are willing to spend $2-3k to buy everything, then go for the older expansions. Otherwise, sticking with the revised content will certainly give you the best bang for your buck.
@@TheGameLocker Thank you for the answer. I finally wanted to buy it and even though lot of people in my country likes board games and card games, for some reason the LOTR LCG is almost impossible to get, only the basic new revised set, and maybe 1 or 2 older random small expansions on some random eshops, but not much else. everything else is not available or sold out. I know i can have fun with the basic set, but i loved the idea of getting different expansions etc and without it i am not sure anymore.
Maybe I missed this somewhere is there a Part 2?
Excited to see Your how to play. :3
Which storage solution do You use for this huge card quantity..?
I mostly use the new boxes the game comes in with the nice inserts, I find they work really well with some BCW foam to fill in the gaps. Then I use a Gamegenic Games' Lair 600+ to store all of the tokens, dials, dice, cubes, and up to 700 cards sleeved in SleeveKings sleeves as a sort of "grab box" for the decks and quests I want to play next.
I have a question. Mendor on his back has the eye of sauron(encounter card back) or the ring(player card pack)? I think you don't put him in the encounter deck but you put him with your heroes at the start of the campaign
I can't remember which card back he has, but the Campaign cards for each scenario always tell you what to do with him.
I really love Warhammer: The Adventure Card Game. similar wording, some similar concepts. Easier to learn to play. Just as much a pain to set up and pack up.
I made a video about some really nice accessories that help a ton with setup/teardown. Still can't get around the time it takes to construct decks, but really that's half the fun :)
I have a question. Aside from having different quests and cards for your deck, is there anything that the core set offers that the expansions do not? Is the core set a good thing to have for someone like me that has played the digital version of the game, has a lot of experience with tcgs, has a good eye for what makes a card good and a staple, and will catch on quickly to what types of effects are good in this game? The people that I would play with play a lot of complex games as well, so they will learn quickly as well, so we would be fine if we got more complex cards and or decks to play. I'm so glad that got revised! I can't believe I missed this growing up and am so upset I missed out on this when I had opportunities to actually play this with people, now I rarely will!
Yeah, you actually need the Core set to get all the tokens, threat dials, first player token, and rulebooks to actually play the game. I mean maybe you cold track things with pencil and paper and dice, but I'd say the core set is essential. It also has a LOT of staple cards that are foundational for building decks even with a complete collection.
There's a thriving community for this game, I'd encourage you to get involved! There's a great Facebook group, subreddit (/r/lotrlcg), the Cardboard of the Rings Podcast, ALeP (A Long Extended Party), Dragncards.com (is a browser-based full implementation of the game that you can play online with others. It's really spectacular)
@@TheGameLocker Ah okay. Then I'll definitely get the core set. It's worth the money to have all of those things. Thank you so much dude for answering all my questions and in a timely manner! I appreciate you doing that!
Really?! That's great! Although for me personally I only want to play with people that I know personally and am close to since what I enjoy most about card games is playing with people that I'm close to and building good memories with them. Besides, I am very uncomfortable hanging out with people that I know nothing about, and I know my family and friends that they're nice people that won't go cursing every few sentences. But I appreciate you mentioning it. I can't say enough how glad I am that I found this game and that It's getting repackaged products! I found it at a good time even though not the best!
@@TheGameLocker Where is your how to play video by the way? I couldn't find it.
On the way. It’s a massive undertaking, I’m still finalizing the script and it’s likely going to be done in 2 parts.
@@TheGameLocker I already watched the tutorial from the group that made it, but thank you. Yeah, I believe it is a lot of work. It's a complex game. That must be a long video!
Are you still going to make tutorial videos for LotR LCG?
Eventually :). It's a big project so it's going to take a while.
Are cycles a thing of the past and are they included in the campaign boxes they are releasing now?
Cycles are still a thing, they're just repackaging some of them from 7 products down to 2 boxes. They're also adding a new campaign mode to those cycles with new boons and burden cards.
@@TheGameLocker have any of the combined cycles been released yet? Or are those the "campaign" boxes? (Or are the campaign boxes the replacement for the deluxe expansions?)
NVM I just looked it up. Man this new revision is super convenient now but it's also confusing since it's so different. Thanks for all your videos on the revised content btw!
Do you think this is worth buying if you already have the older core set?
Depends on your budget and the size of your collection I'd say. If you already have a large collection, probably not worth going back to this. If you're just starting out though, the revised core gives you more copies of staple cards (including unexpected courage), better tokens, and new campaign cards that significantly improve the experience of playing these three quests. You can even take some of the boons you earn in this campaign with you into the next campaign you play (like Angmar Awakened). You might try selling your old core to buy the revised core - not sure what the market is for the old cores though. Hope this helps!
I found the files for PnP core set campaign cards provided by Fantasy Flight under player resources. Now what? How do I go about printing them out? Can I go to a local printing shop? How does this work?
Sorry I'm not your best resource for this. I'd recommend asking around the subreddit or facebook group for this game.
What happened to the learn to play btw?
It's a beast - I'm about 90% done with the script and storyboard, it'll be 2 videos. I'm going to take my time to make it the best and most thorough tutorial that's ever been done for the game.
I'm here trying to figure out why this is $70? Wasn't the original $30? It is awesome that they included multiple copies of cards in this new starter though! I had to purchase 3 of the originals in order to have full playsets of all the cards. Even still, I payed less than $60 for my 3 copies of the original starter.
Okay, after a little bit of research I'm pretty sure the original starter retailed for $70 as well and the price of it just dropped after some time like a lot of things do.
This is such a great game! I have 3 of the original starters, 2 bigger expansions and each of the adventures from the first 2 cycles...all sleeved up. One of the greatest solo games I've played! I really need to dig the cards out again!
@@twitchster77 Agreed! From what I can find the original core MSRP was $40 and included 226 cards. The new revised core MSRP is $70 and includes 313 cards, which includes the 3x copies of all player cards as well as the new campaign boons & burdens to earn. The other things to factor into the price hike is monetary inflation (Asmodee hiked all prices 10-20% last year), extra tokens and dials, and a box with a strong, FUNCTIONAL insert that can hold sleeved cards. Totally worth the $70 imho
@@TheGameLocker I did a little bit of searching after posting this comment and I'm now pretty sure the MSRP for the original starter set was the same as this revised set which makes my original comment here kind of pointless lol.
I do agree that it's worth the price for sure!
This is such a great game!
Argh I want this so much but feel like I should finish buying all the Arkham Horror stuff first lol
It's not a race! This game will be around for a long, long time :)
I hope you still do the HOW TO PLAY video.
Planning on it! Most of the script is written, just gotta find the time to film. It’ll be a huge undertaking, at least 2 parts, probably over an hour of material.
@@TheGameLocker yeah, I'm sure it's a lot to communicate. I've watched a few other how to play for this game but considering how well you know the game, I think you'll have some for perspective.
Is here a howtoplay coming up?
Still in the works, no ETA yet though, it's going to be a massive project.
I am getting this despite already owning the original. Hahaha.
nice artwork. boring game.
why are the staretr decks have only 45 cards the game says that is has to have 50
The original core set ones were even smaller, lol. The easy answer is they're not official decks, they're just meant to help you learn the game and what the different spheres can do. They're not "good" decks, it's very hard to win with them solo (the Leadership one is the best out of the 4). The recommended dual-sphere decks in the back of the Learn To Play book are much better, especially using both in a 2-player game.
@@TheGameLocker ah ok They dont Are in the old Version of the manual sadly. Crazy but the deck build is quite cool
The starter decks are 50. No idea where you got 45 from.
How about FFG release an upgrade pack for the original core set to update it to this version, oh no wait that would be to decent to their customers, na just release the game again and charge a ridiculous price and make as much money as possible, fek the customers!
