- This is a video essay about Flower, a game that is also a work of art. It conveys a worthwhile message that relates to human experience. It communicates is that there can be a harmony between seemingly dissonant things, and it does so through the use of a subtle narrative told through the eyes of a flower. This is a creative, original experience that is worth remembering. Available on the Playstation Network for $9.99!
Thanks to Jenova Chen, the creative director at thatgamecompany, for explaining the philosophy behind Flower's development clearly.
*Don't forget to favorite and comment!!* - Hry
I'm so glad to see any publicity for this game. It's so evocative and artistic and beautiful. Words not often associated with video games. It reminds me of of Narnia springing to life after a too-long winter.
My favourite thing about this game (and indeed all of my favourite games) is the emotion it conveyed. In the level when the power goes out, I felt a real sense of fear, despair and unease. And then, to have that ONE flower explode into glorious triumph in the final level, it was a real gaming moment for me.
Top game! Great video!!
Please do SotC next! :-)
(if you have an HDTV, buy a component cable - it's revolutionised my PS2 playing!!)
Lovely work. I like how you create a visual essay feel - with the depth and insight of the well-written voice-over, combined with the immediacy of the video clips.
I played the demo, searched for the game on CZcams and found this. I got goosebumps watching it. Great narration. Thank you!
I love this. I remember around when this game came out the opinions I heard were that this game had just nice visuals and ambiance, but you've shown me so much more in this video (and the others). Thanks!
WOW, this is easily one of the best videos I've ever come across here on YT.
Flower + Shrooms for the first time = 45min of visual mania that I wish I could remember....
Thanks for the video and spotting these lovely games out! Playing Shadow of Colossus next.
Now if I can get around to playing Flower sober...
This was well done bro and funny enough I had this in my first ever playlist so it's been here for almost 10 years lol and coming back to it you did great and presented this well.
I've studied game development for 4 years in the UK but was talking to a Russian 31 year old woman about games which she say she thinks are a waste of time. I argued that some games are as artistically valid as film and literature and used part of your video to show her. Thanks it's a really good video, I agree with some of the other commenter's that you should do a video about Journey too!
Thanks for the comment! I never actually thought about it that way before, and I completely agree. It is the perfect length because it allows you to experience the entire message in one sitting. Glad you liked the game!
I'm so glad to see any publicity for this game. It's so evocative and artistic and beautiful. Words not often associated with video games. While this mechanic is pretty original, (I guess you could say it's PacMan in a new skin) it's not really the point of the game. Flower is closer to a painting or poem that you can fly through. It truly is interactive art, drawing the viewer in to participate in a vision. It reminds me of of Narnia springing to life after a too-long winter.

Thanks for the comment! I'm one step ahead of you actually, I'm currently working on a 2-part episode featuring both of Fumito Ueda's works, Ico and SotC, so look for that sometime in March. And although I have a component cable, my recorder only has a composite port, so I'm stuck with it unless I choose not to record :(.
amazing. awesome interpretation.
Absolutely stunning
Games like this and Okami truly make you appreciate the true beauty of nature and the like
I recently played through Braid, and it also felt like there was no filler content. Each puzzle seems unique. That's not to say I don't have a ton of games with filler content that I've thoroughly enjoyed.
I think the best practice seems to be close to what Portal gave us. A concise narrative with optional gameplay through advanced levels and challenge modes. However, I think this shorter style unfortunately necessitates a lower price point.
@Killer7Samurai That makes me really happy, thanks! It saddens me whenever I hear people misunderstand the purpose of the game, that's partly why I made this video. I'm glad I was able to open up the game for you!
Hey, thanks so much for the comment, I appreciate it!
Thanks a lot!
Am speechless, this game is wonderful.
@Goukeban That's terrific! It's a very relevant subject, one that I'm interested in myself (obviously). Good luck writing your thesis, and if you need any other examples just let me know.
I hear ya. I never thought I'd be able to play all of the great PS2 games until I bought the system in summer 2008 when the price was reasonable. I'm sure you'll get the chance eventually.
i particuly(excused my spelling) cried in the end of flower This should be an example for games to be means of work of art and not always to be a child's plaything
this game is so beautiful .....
I want this one so bad, but i don't own a PS :( Thanks for making the video, i can still enjoy it :D
It's too bad it's exclusivity denies me the opportunity to play it. I love games like this. Instead, I had to watch someone else play it. Beautiful.
Flowers are beautiful - A beautiful Mind as a Game :D .."See the flowers are dancing around, are dancing with me" :_ )
Wow should I buy this game? It looks beautiful I´m a fan of those games who look like art that´s why I´m such a big fan of the okami it looks like the whole landscapes and trees and flowers are painted on japanese scroll with those brush things.
Hahah, oh dear :-(
Well I just bought one for my PS2 and I'm really pleased with how good it makes things look. Not that they looked bad before, necessarily, but standard def pictures seem to look twice as bad on hd sets!
@TheGameLocker So. Now that Journey is out, I would very much like to hear your input... I believe it to be THatGameCompany's magnum opus so far.
I know this is old, but if you still check those, look at ICO from ps2.
this game should hire you to be the game narator :)
I find games of shorter concise length not only more appropriate to the stories being told, but also that it makes the games more replayable. Portal is another example of this. Often I'd rather developers boil down a singleplayer experience than fatten it with filler content.
@Ebzey You BET I am!
Yes, Portal is absolutely the same way. The most regrettable contra-example is Okami. AMAZING game, but packed with unecessary filler to make it seem bigger and longer than it really should be. Examples: I never used a single item in battle, there are really only 3 weapons with 5 skins each, and treasure chests with useless items are everywhere.
You should check out electroplankton
@dameronWolf Okami is a beautiful game, just like this one. There's no reason not to buy it, it's only $10. It's always listed alongside the PS3's best.
falling in love all over again
Littlebigplanet is a great game too!
Part 1 and part 2!
Get Roger Ebert on the phone, he needs to see this.
The title of this video is WRONG. Flower is DEFINITELY NOT a game worth remembering----------it's a game that is NEVER forgotten....
I got to get a PS3. After a Wii.
Wait what?
dude u kinda sound like solid snake
brilliant video. roger ebert is deluded sadly.
I dont really like the game it is just boring to me and even if is a piece of art it isnt that good of a game in terms of gameplay and story
