    CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS:
    - At 45:39, I quote a rule from page 5 of the Rules Reference that says "An ability’s cost cannot be paid if the resolution of its effect does not have the potential to change the game state." The following example I use for Derndingle Warrior + Honour Guard is correct, but it has nothing to do with the rule I quoted from page 5. That rule is a different rule about costs that you should also be aware of. Here's an example that illustrates it properly: For Hero Beravor, if your deck is empty (i.e. the resolution of her draw cards effect does not have the potential to change the game state), then you cannot pay the cost of exhausting her to drawn (zero) cards.

    • @andrewgr144
      @andrewgr144 Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks, I just got to that section and was puzzled, thinking to myself "But the game state has changed, because now Honour Guard is exhausted." The example in this comment makes sense.

      Im sorry, Im still confused about the combo trigger effects and simultaneous trigger effects. It happens a lot with the dwarfs mining playstyle when discarding cards and trigger multiple effects. I would love for you to illustrate this part if the tutorial with real examples of what can and can't be considered as valid simultaneous effects/combos. For example, if I have in play three card effects that trigger when the card on top of my deck gets discarded.... Then all three effects can be activated or just the one that activated it?

    • @TheGameLocker
      @TheGameLocker  Před 3 měsíci

      @@SSTRANGEE1 Can you give me a specific example with the names of the three cards in play that all seem to trigger at the same time, and how they get triggered?

    • @tomzirpel3091
      @tomzirpel3091 Před 2 měsíci

      I am confused as well. When your example is still correct, can you tell me what rule says this? The board changed because i exhausted honour gard because of his response.

    • @TheGameLocker
      @TheGameLocker  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@tomzirpel3091 Several folks have commented here saying that the game state HAS changed because Honour Guard is now exhausted. This is a really tricky situation, but this specific card interaction was actually confirmed by the designer. I’ll do the best I can here to try to explain the reasoning behind the ruling:
      Basically, in order to determine if the cost on Derndingle Warrior’s ability changed the game state, we can’t look beyond the actual cost/effect of Derndingle Warrior itself. We can’t look at any secondary or tertiary effects on other cards that are triggered as a result of paying the cost; we must ONLY look at Derndingle Warrior’s cost to see if paying the cost changed the game state. Exhausting Honour Guard is not part of paying Derndingle Warrior’s cost - that’s a separate response we triggered as a result. All that matters here is that the damage was canceled, so the game state didn’t change with respect to paying Derndingle Warrior’s cost, and therefore we didn’t actually pay the cost so we can’t get the defense boost.
      I hope that helps!

    I'm still learning some new things that I didn't know about the game one year later from these two videos. These videos are great dude and are helpful with clarifying some rules that aren't clear to me in the rulebook! I didn't catch that the interaction with Honour Guard with Derndingle Warrior's effect would not work because the cost wouldn't have been paid. So, I have been doing that wrong then. Those kinds of interactions and knowing how they interact is very helpful.

    • @GuardianAngelEatos
      @GuardianAngelEatos Před 10 měsíci

      @@TheGameLocker Yes, so I have learned. Even being a long time ccg player since I was ten, I am often noticing later on during a scenario that I missed something or finding out afterwards that I did something wrong. I'm loving it though and it is definitely my new favorite card game and probably my favorite game period! I love the depth, replay value, freedom, and how thematic and challenging the game is! It really makes you think. And it's thanks to this game that I realized how much I love co-op games. I think it's more fun to work together as a team than too compete against each other personally, and it creates a healthier environment and is better for teaching new players since you don't need to worry about awkward situations where a new player doesn't understand a card but doesn't want to show the card because it will give information on what they have. I just wish I had discovered this game years ago when my group of friends and I were able to meet on a somewhat regular basis and it wasn't so hard to find a bunch of these expansions I imagine. I never imagined when I started that I would want to get all of the expansions not including the nightmare decks when I started, and here I am hunting for the last about ten adventure packs and one missing saga. The lack of being able to get a lot of these expansions I think is the only complaint I have with the game, and that's not the fault of the game itself. I think the actual game is as perfect as a game can get! If I had any complaint about the game, is that there are a good number of generically powerful cards that after your collection has gotten big enough a good portion of your decks will likely be the same unless you force yourself not to use certain cards, and some heroes will just never be used because there are so many outstanding generic heroes that easily fit into many decks. I feel like realistically any deck with Tactics the best option is tactics Eowyn or Merry for example. Generic cards are always the best unfortunately. She's not a fun hero, but man she is amazing!

    I loved the examples of ranged and the explanations and examples of the golden action window and silver action window. I just got the game last month and have eight solo games completed. I've only used one solo deck (with minor tweaks) so far. I can't wait to try two-handed and multiplayer.
    One thing that still seems confusing coming from Marvel Champions is who is revealing the cards during Staging. It seems like unlike MC where they are dealt one to each player, it's the first player drawing everything. Seems more streamlined this way, but it might make the word "You" on some cards a bit more complicated on resolving.

    • @TheGameLocker
      @TheGameLocker  Před 11 měsíci

      Glad it was helpful! You are correct that generally in the staging step the cards are revealed for the whole group, and if the card lets you choose a target then the first player gets the final say on who the target should be. The way the cards are written this should not be confusing (I don't think they ever say "you", except on some shadow effects in the combat phase, which refers to the defending player who's engaged with the enemy). However, in the Saga expansion quests (starting with the Fellowship Of The Ring), they introduce the rule that each player must reveal one encounter card for themselves, with a new "peril" keyword on some cards that prevents other players from helping that player resolve that card.

And if you’re putting the other two Mendor boons into the next campaign, you also have to put the burdens into the future encounter decks, and I don’t believe it’s worth it with the burdens.
    I don’t think you can put in the boones without the burdens

    • @TheGameLocker
      @TheGameLocker  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Hi! The three boons I mentioned are the two Mendor boons, and one other from Dark of Mirkwood expansion. Those are the ONLY cards that can carry over because those are the only cards specifically mentioned on the resolution effects on the campaign cards. This is a golden rule situation where you don't carry over anything into your next campaign, unless a card effect specifically tells you to break that rule. The campaign cards do not say to carry over any burdens into your next campaign, and they are not "linked" to the boons in any way, so the ONLY cards you can carry over are the three specifically mentioned: the two Mendor boons and the one from Dark of Mirkwood. I also received this official clarification from the designer during one of their live plays :). I hope this helps!

    Quick question regarding Direct Damage - in case of a simple 'deal 3 damage' wording it's fine to deal it to an ally with less than 3 hit points left, correct? This kind of chump blocking applies not only to the Combat Damage?

    Hello, I have another question. During the Caves of Nibin-Dûm (!Little spoilers for this quest!) I put Secret Vigil on Orc Chieftain in stage 2. Then, he was "set aside, out of play". Does the Secret Vigil fall of off him or it returns with him in the stage 4 when he is "added to the staging area"? We used the Grim Rule and discarded the Secret Vigil, but we were not quite sure about that. :/ Maybe it was stupid idea to put Secret Vigil on special enemy like this in the first place. :D

    great clear videos. Here's a question for you or the community. If playing with 2 players and one is not engaged with any enemies can they attack an enemy engaged with the other player or ONLY with ranged weapons? Just seems like it would be reasonable but I dont think its allowed. It is wierd though because if you have no ranged support all you can do is watch the other guy get annihilated by a tough guy and do nothing...seems unreasonable.

    • @TheGameLocker
      @TheGameLocker  Před 9 měsíci

      Yep - it's just as I described in the video, characters with the ranged keyword can attack enemies engaged with other players, but characters without ranged can't.
      The reality is that in a 2 player game there are LOTS of ways to help out the other player; it never feels like one player is just watching as the other is helplessly getting bashed by an enemy. In the engagement phase, each player can CHOOSE to engage any one enemy, so that always lets you have some measure of control over who gets which enemies. Also, if one player is taking all the enemies, that leaves the other player's characters available to commit to the quest. Taking on enemies is just one aspect of the game. The other player can support in a myriad of other ways too, like reducing threat, healing, drawing cards, sharing resources, giving attachments to the other player, etc.

      @@TheGameLocker thanks for the reply. Yes I understand that and thanks for clarifying re. ranged. The problem though is the order isnt it? I mean you do the questing way before you draw the new cards for the staging area and commit enemies unless in larger principle you just have unique questing and fighting teams. our situation was the guy who had the enedmy got clobberd as I only had 1 ranged assist. We had already won the quest except for killing the boss so all I could do was stand by (except for the one assist) and watch his ally get killed. In the end managed to do enough damage to take him out but just felt like it was odd to just be standing around. Anyway first play through-lots to learn and your videos are superb. Keep it up

    • @TheGameLocker
      @TheGameLocker  Před 11 měsíci +2

      This specific card interaction was actually confirmed by the designer. It's tricky, but you need to separate the COST on Derndingle Warrior's ability from any other effects or responses triggered like Honour Guard - those are separate. Derndingle's cost is to damage himself. That cost must be paid, and paying the cost must actually change the game state. All that matters for resolving that cost is ensuring that the damage is actually placed on Derndingle Warrior - that will allow his defense boost effect to happen. Exhausting Honour Guard is separate, and is not considered when checking whether paying Derndingle Warrior's cost changed the game state. Hope that helps!

    • @AtrusGambit
      @AtrusGambit Před 11 měsíci +1

      @TheGameLocker thanks for clarifying. However, this still seems inconsistent to me.
      I've been using spirit Eowyn (discard do raise will) with silver harp (exhaust to return a card). Is this not allowed because the cost for Eowyn wasn't paid?
      What about the Aragorn Theodred interaction?
      I get that the designer weighed in on this particular interaction, but it seems like he had clarify because that particular rule diverges from the design pattern. One-off exceptions to design patterns just feel icky. Elegant design should be consistent. Either cards should be allowed to refund other cards' cost, or they shouldn't, or exceptions should be explicitly printed on the card.
      Seems like a woopsie...which is fine. I can't begin to imagine the complexity in designing a game like this!

      I think you hit one key point in that Honour Guard "cancels" the damage. Whereas Silver Harp says "AFTER a card is discarded from your hand". That implies that you still discarded the card, so the cost was still paid for Eowyn's ability, and Silver Harp came in afterwards.
      Aragorn + Theodred still definitely happens, because there's no cancelling happening here. Aragorn gains a resource, then he spends a resource. Hope that helps!
