    My take- Paul Smith always came off as egotistical, in many of the interviews I have seen…subtly confrontational…mostly he seems like a jerk…. And plus, for that price, I think his guitars sound weak. No character or warmth-just thin and no complexity…I see no reason to ever buy one of his guitars….this video helps me re-affirm my opinion (and it is just my opinion).

    Pickups steing gauge amp effects cables bridge and nut. Using exactly the same rig in different wood guitars will produce a difference negligable enough that you could compensate this with an equaliser adjustment. The 3 biggest differences are, a: weight. b: looks/beauty. c:snob factor. I have expensive and really cheap guitars and some of the best I own I have paid more for new pickups. If it feels great then you done.

    EVEN if tone wood was a real thing, you EARS WONT HEAR IT and the older you get you really wont hear it, with recording and compression it wont even exist. Do you want a car that goes 100mph or one that goes 101mph for twice as much?

    The quality on solar guitars is pretty bad tho. So I guess 400$ is a more realistic price for these instruments. When you really get a counterfeit there is a chance they are built better than the original, kinda like Apple cables.

    Paul made himself and other tone wood believers look dumb as shit dude. If that's how you represent "tone wood good" then maybe you shouldn't be talking about it. Got to give it to the guy though, manipulating people into spending extra money on expensive wood, true businuess man. Too bad he alienated a bunch of his audience.

  • @BIBSTERSrepairshop
    @BIBSTERSrepairshop Před 7 hodinami

    I like Dylan talks tone take on it where wood does matter but not in tone like neck wood choice is going to effect neck dive way more than it does with tone.

  • @phaeded0ut
    @phaeded0ut Před 7 hodinami

    Paul has done this before, especially when arguing with Ned Steinberger. Paul is probably upset that more wood choices are being denied due to various regulations out there, and some alternatives are not as kindly as others for the relative cut and seasoning of the wood in question. Tuning machines buttons only matter for cosmetics and ease of use. Brass nuts and even steel nuts are awesome for certain applications. The same is true for the bridge pieces/saddles. Different types of materials do affect the sound of an instrument, and different folks have their own preferences. How one plays also has an effect on the sound generated by a particular instrument. The electronics, their relative settings, the amp, speakers, and what effects/processing are used, if any also have a significant effect on what sounds are heard. PRS and Gretsch guitars were never my cup of tea due to the controls (the electronics) for years, my preference was for individual volume, tone and pickup coil splitting (as applicable) and Varitones as used in Gibson (and some Matsumoku, Burny and BC Rich guitars). Do certain combinations of woods, or other materials work for the same applications I prefer? The short answer is yes, but there are differences, even with the same pickups, electronics, fret wire, amp settings and cabinets and it does come from the wood choices in the relative “same instruments.” This said, from the opposite side where lots of effects are being leveraged and a high attack, high output is required those wood choices are not going to matter. The pickups, amp settings, cabinet choices and speakers will have a greater impact in those applications. This is especially valid when heavier strings are in use and tuned lower so that the impact of strings against the frets percussive sounds are intended.

    It’s called “the straw man fallacy” (look it up). It’s an underhand method of arguing one’s point. If you don’t like the sound of what someone’s saying but you know they’re sounding believable, you pretend they’re saying an outlandish, exaggerated version of what they’re really saying. Then you pull apart the exaggerated version without dealing with their real point. Always thought Paul R S was a twonk, this adds to that view.

    Paul doesn't sell tone wood he sells guitars. He could make more money by sourcing cheaper wood. He rejects wood based on the things he finds as subpar, which represents a direct loss of money. He isn't vested in woods. He's vested in bringing an expert if he is shown to be wrong in his opinions, he would lose credibility.

    Wood obviously makes a difference even if, as you say, it's minor. When you strum an electric guitar, do you note that one guitar resonates longer or differently than another? I do. I have three and they all sound very different, even just how long the sound can be heard. And as long as the strings are vibrating, the pickups are sending electrical impulses to the amp or whatever it's plugged into. Just that difference is hugely important.
