The LEGAL Gibson Copy ?

- Restring Sunday is back (again/ for now) This is one of the few examples of a legal Gibson Les Paul copy. To be fair, it didn't start out as legal and only became that after it was argued successfully in a Japanese court, but hey, It is what it is. A Burny Les Paul (Luper Prude)

You remembered...? 🤯
These guys are sick
In your face, Glen!
Yes ... More W. A. L. K E. R songs please!!!
Y'all truly are Bringing Rock Back.... and setting it free..... Nice work
Y'all could warm up for the kiss avatars in kiss 2.0.
It says "Super Grade" on the headstock. You have to squint a little to see it but it's there.
You are right! It says "Super Grade", though you can mistake it for Les Paul from a distance... good peace of font manipulation :)
It's hilarious because they definitely tried to make the beginning letters of each word look like an L and a P but use the cursive-esque style to still make the words.
I love every Burny I've played, but that's definitely some plausible deniability.
Agree.
"Luper Prude" is funnier, though.
Hahahahahahahahaha!!! Yes!
The lawsuit your referring too was filed in Japan and only applied to Japan. At roughly the same time they sent cease and desist letters in the USA which did dissuade burny, and Tokai etc from importing to the states. This is the reason why you can get them and we can’t in the states. I believe the EU and UK default to whatever is legal in the country of origin trademark wise. Meaning as neither Gibson nor burny make the guitar in the Uk they have no standing to prevent the other from doing anything
I've always defended Gibson's right to defend their intellectual property, but I think the Japanese court ruling is based upon common sense. It's about time the US court catches up.
i would even let them keep the open book headstock, they can keep all the g string issues
Enire US: Wats common sense boi? Wooo ''pew pew'' Murica!
Umm no thanks, america trademark law is based actually
@Kyush4 Are you speaking from experience or just parroting the usual rubbish? I've owned 3 and never had a problem.
@@castleanthrax1833 The one I have now has a G and B string issue. I may have finally solved it but I almost swapped out the nut.
I have a Burny SG and it’s easily one of the nicest guitars I’ve ever owned. Absolute dream to play.
My old guitar teacher (in Japan) loved burny. He rated them very highly. He knew his stuff too as he was a maker and repairer too. Personality was terrible though.
I have the black "custom" Burny LP with the chrome hardware and P90s, amazing guitar!
You guys restore my faith in young people. I wish you every success with the band 💯
I think the headstock is trying to say Super Grade while at the same time looking more like LP as some sort of Jedi mind trick.
to KDH's point about country of origin, it call comes down to order of operations, Epiphone made a huge change to their chinese factories 3-4 years ago, where they changed their definition fo "quality". greater qc steps were taken, more presence to proper intonation out of the box, and cleaned up routes and wiring mechanics. That's why the newer epi's sound noticably better than their compatriots of 6 years passed. Same with squier china and fender mexico now becoming a lot closer in quality. It's all about where the parent company choses to cut corners whilst manufacturing in the far east
Your banter is surprisingly funny. More of you both for these restring episodes
Always love the videos where Glen joins! Jokes, fun, and guitar 🤘🤘
Isn’t the bridge backwards? How do you access the saddle intonation screws with the tailpiece in place?
Got myself a Burny LP custom with P90 a couple of weeks ago.
Love it.
I had a 90's burny in the mid 2000's. The thing was amazing. I stuck Seymour Duncan's in it but the stock pickups were amazing. Fit/finish, everything was spot on. Also owned quite a tokai's, a greco (I think) Edwards, and a few other lawsuit era Japanese guitars. All were a pleasure.
Got a burny RR custom, swapped out pups for SD .Plays ,looks and sounds fantastic.
I think I have the same guitar and it also plays great.
I didn’t know the neck was maple which is interesting.
The headstock looks like it is spliced on differently to other LP style guitars and the machine heads have a silky smooth but robust tension.
You have both blown Chappers out of the water with your advanced playing style and intellect now. 🤘
I assume this is the reason why there's so much Chibbos in the US as compared to Europe where you can get a Tokai or an Edwards at the average guitar store.
It sucks that most have 50's neck, though.
Or Brands like Firefly.
Those burnys are great! I have an edwards ELP 92 with a comically fat neck that I tune to D standard with 13-56 and it also rocks. My most treasured LP copy though has the Gibson logo but really is an old 70s Japanese les paul copy built 100% fakethentic. It is aged to hell but plays great while still needing a re-fret. I call that one Murphy because it looks like a 10k murphy lab job lol
Thanks as always for the video. 🙏
Is that the eatin ain't cheating riff by Satchel from Steel Panther at the beginning of the video? 🤘
Since the original vid where Glenn got his guitar I picked up a mint burny gold top that had been upgraded with some Monty’s ‘full Monty’ p90 - for half what the guitars are new.. it’s a fantastic guitar and if it weren’t for my epi Lazarus which cost 3 times as much I’d be after one like Glenn has for sure
Ernie’s Balls 😂
Excellent video!
Future episode thought...
Shopping for a second microphone 🎤.
I have a 1986 sunburst Burny Super Grade. Based on a 1960 LP - great guitar!
Interesting comments re. the differences. I wonder what Glen would make of a Navigator?
I've been on the lookout for an 80s Japanese Burny for a while now, you got really lucky finding one thát cheap... They are amazing!! 😎👍
Came for the story, stayed for Glen's playing 🙌🏻❤
Now I don't have a burny but I have an edwards, and it is one of the most wonderful electric guitars I own and it sounds and plays perfect for me
These are GREAT guitars!
During the 70s copies such as these were of BETTER quality than their US made inspirations! \m/
During the '70s they were still learning how to build them, early '80s are the best
@@LudwigVon LOL! 1950s:WERE we a joke to you?
Ive got a sparkly burny flying V and it's an incredible guitar.
I also always do my guitar setup outside in winter 😅❄❄❄
I have an Orville. Made in Japan for Gibson for sale in Japan. It actually says Les Paul on the headstock.
I have an Edwards with the Gibson headstock shape. Great guitar.
02:10 I used to be a completely loyal Ernie Ball user (and I do still like them) but, like a lot of Les Paul players, I had tuning issues. Particularly with the "G" string. One day I stumbled across a video on CZcams that recommended using "wound G Strings" to fix the problem. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find any Ernie Ball 10's with a wound G string. My teacher recommended D'Addario strings so I gave them a try and they did solve my tuning problem. They can be a bit pricey though compared to the Ernie Ball Slinky's. Just my 2 cents. What PUP's are in that thing? It sounds killer.
Dean Markley Blue Steel are great strings that have a wound g. They also come with a plain g just for poops and giggles. I would highly recommend them.
Guys, "Super Grade" - Do you only have block letters over there in Ireland?
Damn, I just got back from the vintage guitar store here, they sold the Burney they've had for awhile, with a floyd and sustainer in the neck, I was going to get it, then I am watching your videos, and see this.
You might be interested to know that Nik Huber just stopped selling his Orca model in the U.S. because of Gibson, but they will still be sold in Europe and the rest of the world.
The Burny I have is chinese made. I think the craftmanship in the build is very good. Out of the box it has grovers and switchcraft electronics. I believe it has a gotoh bridge, looks the same as a Gibson, also has the metal thumb daggers on the pots! I use 10s on Gibson scale length and 9s on Fender and PRS.
That's a nice guitar! Put some Schaller strap locks on it, so you can go crazy on stage. I play a Cherry Burst Korean Epiphone Les Paul that looks like this. I prefer it to a Gibson. Lol
100% agree. Schaller or now Grover. Dunlop are great too.
Dimarzio clip strap locks are great too! Never dropped a guitar with em. Used to do crazy shit on stage 😂
The Grover and Schaller strap locks are completely compatible. I have two LPs and one Lighting bolt strap. I just bought Grover strap buttons to work with my old Schaller lockers.
On the bridge, a "ABR" bridge has the saddle screws face towards the pick-up. And a "NASHVILLE BRIDGE " the screws face towards the "stop tailpiece
Can I make a comment about your sound? I'm not sure which Rode Wireless model you have, but I just bought the Wireless PRO 2, which really improves the sound. Instead of tilting the transmitter back and forth between two speakers you can just place one TX on one speaker and the other TX on the other, then choose how the receiver mixes it, in the app. I've tried many different lavs in the past few weeks and I've come to the conclusion (from my own tests) that the Rode Wireless PRO 2 is really the best solution, by a big margin. Of course, what sucks is that I've already recorded a bunch of videos, with the other systems, that I'll still have to edit and publish.
Lastly, I am still testing various headset microphones, for situations where I have to isolate my voice from really loud background noises (in a rehearsal studio). That's a separate story that's just applicable to my situation, but for most CZcamsrs I believe nothing beats the Rode Wireless PRO 2.
And I hope I'm not coming across as an affiliate of Rode. I am not and I have no affiliation whatsoever with Rode or any other audio gear company.
These are so much better than epiphones. The actual got the body shape correctly.
Also, real 59 les pauls had thin pickguards and poker chips very similar to this burny.
I have 2 Chinese made Burny Les Paul’s, a P90 Goldtop and a “Jimmy Page” 3 pickup Black Beauty Custom with a Bigsby. (I have swapped the trussrod covers for a more authentic looking 2 hole version)
They are both awesome guitars, very comparable to genuine Gibson Les Paul’s I’ve owned.
I’ve never owned or played a Japanese Burny so can’t comment as to how they compare, but difficult to imagine how they could be significantly better!
I had planned to upgrade the pickups and pots but haven’t rushed to, as am enjoying the guitars as they are but will probably still upgrade at some point in the future!
Burny and Greco are definitely my favorite lawsuit era Gibson copies. The ones Ibanez made when they started out were also great guitars, but not as faithful copies. If I had to pick a modern Les Paul "copy", it would have to be either Heritage or Eastman. They are both excellent in every way, but the Eastman SB59 is slightly better looking IMO (those soft curves and more standard headstock are just perfect).
Totally agree! I just got two Greco's, (a'78 & '88) and regret not doing it sooner. These things are amazing. The Burney here looks like my OBG.
I have a 1978 Greco EG-900 which I bought in Japan, fantastic guitar. The higher-end late 70s early 80s Japanese copies are really good.
Also, the headstock script font says "Super Grade".
Aha. I thought it might be Trade. Certainly better than the old Tokai (I think) Springy Sound and Breezy Sound for their Fender models.
@@farmduck2762 You're correct about those Tokai names. I played a Tokai Springy Sound in Japan at the same time as the Greco I bought. Great guitar, should have bought it but I didn't want to ship it (the Greco I flew back with as carry-on).
Springy Sound are the higher end models. Breezy Sound are the lower-end models (lower than Springy Sound at least, not sure if Breezy is the very low end, but that's the general pecking order).
It allegedly says "Super Grade".
I like how they just stuck a cursive L and P in there. They were like, "meh, looks close enough to English" and called it a day. 😂
Ah yes, Luper Prade 🔥🔥🔥
I've had a couple Burnys are they are EXCELLENT! 80s/90s made in Japan and they are just epic. In fact, Im going to buy another one right now
That strap is a Tommy Thayer signature strap. Comes with his white lightning explorer and Les Paul.
While I agree that quality guitars can come from anywhere, there's certainly a noticeable difference between MIJ and MIC guitars. Once you know what to look for, you can spot it from across the room. In particular, MIJ finishes have a very distinctive look in person.
They can make good guitars in China but they usually don’t, personally I’m against supporting the ccp, but made in Japan it’s always made with pride, it’s like you can’t go wrong with made in Japan.
i bought an ESP Edwards John Sykes that i absolutely love.
On the Headstock it is Super Grade .Love those Burny´s!
The headstock logo - Luper Grude, or Super Grade?
I really like the burnys and wanna try one
KDH, are you going to cover the recent scandal that was uncovered about Epiphone using non-mahogany/maple woods on their $1,000 Les Pauls despite advertising them as such? Epiphone even admitted to it and now has a disclaimer one their website stating that they can change the specs at any time without informing the public.
That disclaimer has been there for 30 years
Well mahogany and maple are not wood species, they are trade descriptions.
The African wood commonly known as sapele is often described as a mahogany wood due to its similar appearance and density to the Central and South American wood that is the classic "mahogany" despite the actual tree species belonging to different genus.
Due to the over harvesting of many American tropical hardwoods and the rise in Asian exports, definitions are getting very muddied.
Unless a manufacturer or the company that owns the brand specifies it uses a specific species (which in actual fact they should for customs documentation), it's going to be very difficult for the customer to take issue with.
From a manufacturer's point of view, there can be all sorts of problems with supply, trade wars and even legal issues due to sustainability concerns in different parts of the world - see rosewood issues.
Really, it's mainly the companies trying to cover their arses when things don't go to plan.
@@pauln6803I like the way purpleheart wood looks and feels. I don't have a guitar that has a fretboard made out of it so I have no idea how it holds up over time but they feel nice. I prefer ebony fretboards
@@darksu6947
Purpleheart is rated as durable, being resistant to rot and very high on the Janka (hardness) scale.
Obviously the beautiful purple turns brown over time, but that can be delayed quite effectively by modern UV resistant finishes.
I like black African ebony as a fretboard material but I'd rather manufacturers made a determined effort to replace ebony with engineered substitutes such as treated persimmon (to turn it black) or Richlite and Rocklite due to ecological concerns.
I built a guitar with a wenge/purpleheart/maple neck with a Rocklite fretboard - the maple was noticeably softer to work than the wenge and purpleheart.
I also found a piece of purpleheart on eBay (UK) which is so hard it destroys planer blades and is near impossible to sand.
I want a Burny so bad. Damn shame that the prices are rising. Also, Burny is made by Fernandes.
I'm quite sure others mentioned it too, but it is "Super Grade". I like "Luper Prude" much more though :D
Why did you do the video outside?
Every Les Paul has the strap fly off because of the angle of the button. Mine dropped once. My left hand just happened to be under the neck so I saved it.
I ordered strap locks that evening.
Burny/Fernandes guitars are used by X-Japan. That’s some damn good company to be in 🤘
Thanks, now I am (again) gassing for a non-gibson LP type... And I generally prefer pointy ones! 😅
Luper Prude Lolol that’s great!
I think it says “Super Grade” or an attempt at using that script for it lol 4:48
I think Gibson used 3pc maple necks with a volute in the 70:s don't know if they did in the 80:s at least with Les Pauls 🙂
Do you think if Gibson was never to have been that the Les Paul shape would have come about anyway? I've always wondered this.
That would depend on how exact you are being. It’s very unlikely someone would independently come up with an outline which is absolutely precisely identical. On the other hand, it’s a guitar shape with a single cutaway - many variations on that would surely have come into existence without Gibson.
The other thing to consider is that elements of the Les Paul design are obviously derived from Archtop (hollowbody) guitars, which were a Gibson invention. It’s likely that something very similar could’ve been designed by a different maker of Archtop guitars had Gibson not done it themselves. However, with no Gibson company at all, the early history of the electric guitar (from which the Les Paul comes) would be quite different.
There were single cut acoustics 50 years before the Les Paul. And Bigsby had a single cut electric before the Les Paul.
Well that was fun and informative, thanks guys. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 5 horns for this one.
Babe wake-up new KDH video with Glen!
thank you.
More Glenn please! Glenn is hilarious and deserves to be a regular fixture.
This thing sounds so good and seems to play so well. I would never think it was a Gibson.
Ace not using dimarzio super distortion in his gibsons last few years.
Also it says super grade on the headstock
At first i thought the headstock said bunny 😂
I remember when you let him pick this out... Great looking axe
I want two of whatever Glen is on. # if they are small.
Looks like the headstock says "Super Grade" which is almost more chintzy than what you guys came up with.
Who will be able to tell the difference between Kiss with backing tracks and Kiss avatars with backing tracks? Not me, but only because I wouldn't go to see them even if they played in my front room.
Yes.......................lol ..........You two are hilarious.................nice one, mate...........gonna check out your band ......... rock on.
Burny, Greco, and 70s Ibanez LP copies are so much cooler to me than Gibsons. Cheaper too!
Yeah and the Tokais and the fact that Gibson doesn’t want me to have that option makes me want them that much more.
I recognize that opening riff but can't quite put my finger on it. Help.
Steel panther - Eatin’ ain’t cheatin’
@@KDH, Ah, yes.
P.S. W.A.L.K.E.R. rocks hard!!!!!! Thank you!
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Kiss turns into a Menudo type band. Where the members change but the image and music type stays the same. Except in Menudo, the members get cycled through when they hit a certain age, being a boy band and all
i have a Tokai Love Rock which is again another copy of a Les Paul, i love that thing to bits
I just picked up a mid '80s tokai SG. It has changed my life.
SUPER GRADE...fernandes /Burny. Awesome instruments
Subscribed to Walker. 😊
It's Burny (Fernandes) Super Grade
If you look at the life expectancy of a human, per capita? 20 years is a lot of people, money and time lost! Gibson seen the big picture when it was to late, or they didn't like paperwork. 🧐🤣
Gibson seems to want to wait until brands are bigger in hopes of bigger payout ever since former owners stopped going after brands right away in late 1970's with Ibanez as owners of Gibson found out how little they got from the deal for how much was spent in lawsuit money.
Andy Latimer the guitarist for Camel has been using these guitars for years
“I thought it was 3 o’clock”
Brilliant
Ive got a Tokai Love Rocks copy and its savage
I think that supposed to say Super Grade on the headstock.
Confirm, that´s correct.
Hopefully Burny fixed the tuning issue with the Lp headstock. lol
Glen. Hair cut. Love the leather.
It is Sunday today!
Bring us the rankinggggggghgg!!!
I used to import Japanese guitars and resell them in the UK. They're ace. I particularly favoured Burny, Greco and Tokai with set necks and two screw truss rod covers. There are actually levels of quality in all those brands (and sometimes comedic names or obscure model codes). The lower tiers of quality can be quite shocking. The upper tiers are very good but still inferior to real Gibsons even the Norlin ones. Shills pumping the Japanese guitars they have for sale combined with hate for Gibson have created a myth around Japanese Les Paul clones. I still have a Greco LP standard somewhere, it's comical, the top is a steam bent veneer! Mad. Nice looking guitar though 🙂Yamaki and Yamaha made some truly premier guitars in the LP and SG vein but they weren't clones they had individual style
As far as the cool names I remember seeing one called a "Battle" Les Paul which I wish I had bought at the time, but I was short in funds. In terms of the quality, the original Navigator Les Paul's were easily better than 90% of the stuff currently coming out of the Gibson custom shop. And I own a Gibson custom shop Class 5 Les Paul so I'm not talking out of my ass. The top tier currently made in Japan Tokais are definitely much better than any of the standard Gibsons and in some cases match or exceed the quality of the custom shop guitars. In some cases it's a matter of opinion but in terms of the overall product, the Japanese guitar craftsmen are peerless in the world and make guitars with a quality that reflects that.
@@Joe-mz6dc
I think when it comes to the upper echelons of Japanese production they have actual trained craftsmen, whereas the US (Gibson in particular) makes use of low paid, disposable labour.
The sheer amount of complaints about Gibson's quality control for what are very expensive instruments ought to tell you something about the way in which they operate, what the employees think of the company and how that feeds back into the product.
Man, tuning to D on a set of tens. Madness. If it was me it'd never play in tune
i will say that yeah country of origin doesnt matter because i have have epiphone stantdard 60s and the thing plays like butter
What's the intonation like? My biggest hate with 90% of gibsons is not being able to get the bastard in tune over the 12th fret.
Do they inherit this issue?
Glen lookin 80’s as hell!!!
Cool!
I think the headstock says 'Super Grade'
Yes.......more W.A.L.K.E.R please.... y'all Rock!!!
glenn seems to be a superfun dude
