  • These might just be some of the most ugly guitars ever made!
I asked Glen to join me in ranking them, ranging from the classic Reverse Flying V all the way to some of the strangest guitars in existence.

I feel like the Prince guitar is kind of in a different category. Like, it's basically a playable stage prop. And for that purpose with Prince playing it, it totally works.
For any one else, it'd be a big no.

I kinda love the Banana-caster for the yellow and the insane amount of frets. Id take a six string version if I didnt have to pay an arm and a leg for it.

    • @brians1793
      @brians1793 Před 6 měsíci +6

@@mate8115 I thought that at first too, but it really doesn't when you realize the frets you can't access easily aren't really playable anyway, the 24th is very easily accessible and some beyond that. It looks like you could use the 27th without much trouble but that's starting to get unplayable. The higher frets though are where a lot of the harmonics are like where you'd do pinch harmonics so they can help mark those points at least. Another issue with higher frets is the string loses length for sustaining notes quickly past 27 or so.

I agree, I really like it, the only thing I think could be better is that the body is a bit too long. It just looks a little off. Take everything from the bridge up and move it back like an inch and it would look way more balanced imo. Then give it a different finish and I'd say it's easily the best on the list.

Gibson's semi-hollowbodies like the ES-335 and ES-339 have tops and backs constructed of layers (either 3 or 4) of maple veneer. My understanding is that the veneers are assembled in successive cross-grain layers with the top layer having its grain longitudinal to the length of the guitar. No, no no! It's pretentious nonsense for Wannabee Winkers (feel free to change the appropriate vowel there). Thank you for reading my rant. You make a strong argument sir! The "if it feels right buy it, regardless of what it looks like" school of guitar buying should really be the school we all sign up to. That said, I am all for non glossy necks for example and I know for sure that you can get a "well setup and perfetly played in" performance, without an "it's been on stage since the mid 50s, honestly, Guv, straight up it has". cosmetic job, simply by for example sanding the neck with 00 wire wool on the final varnish coat to get a played-in style satin finish. It can still look nice and new.

The second Rick-Toone stringed dichotomy you so graciously showed us, reminded me of when you eat a few barely digestible food stuffs and they bind together, to come out in a barely recognizable fashion, that you then stare down at, trying to remember what you had eaten previously. Later to be heard from the lavatory, exclaiming "Oh yeah!", in recognition.

I have an Oktober guitars Doyle guitar and it's not that bad I upgraded the pickup to an actual Duncan invader it would be better with a thinner neck and it was only 300$ with shipping

I really like the grannycaster. If it had a bottom horn so you could actually, y'know, play it, It would be pretty much perfect. Although I am very confused about the controls. I see 5 knobs and a pickup switch, but only one pickup? Unless maybe there is a piezo.

Fun fact about that Lady Gaga guitar: It was going to be played at the Super Bowl but decided not to use it. I have seen it in person at Brian's Guitars in Cheshire CT...It's actually really cool knowing who it belonged too.

No, but seriously- that Triax just screams _"Klingon Light Battlecruiser."_ A gray paint job and some surface details, some Trekkie will cough up $50,000 for that and not flinch. Not *_ME,_* but one of us would. An odd lot, we Trekkies tend to be. 🤣

I personally liked the Grannycaster, and the Kramer Bannacaster. I am a tad bias about yellow finishes though. Also please always say Subscrimbo.

Does the Steinberger come in a variety of tone woods. Honestly... this guitar could (depending on your view) confuse or simplify the tone wood debate .

Do you like guitars with pick guards or without pick guards, and what is the weight of some of these guitars.
I think most of these guitars are just wall art.
PS. Do a list of one of the kind guitars

I love my Reverse Flying V. Mine is the first year 2007 first run. The 2nd year had the brass truss rod cover. All the plastics still have their protective film. The case is immaculate, still has the red plastic peice that keeps the case combo being set for the first time. It sits well on your body, and sounds great! Only 400 made mine on the 206th day of 2007. It may never go up in value, and I’m totally ok with that! But here’s to hoping to get lucky in 40 years haha 😆
