1987 Cadillac Opera Lamp Repair
Our trained stunt performer replaces the broken 110 volt power inverter for the opera lamps on a 1987 Cadillac Brougham. If an amateur were to try this and make a mistake, they could get hurt or killed (under just the right circumstances). Don't try this, just enjoy the performance and leave the danger to the professionals. By the way, legally speaking, we are not owned or operated by Cadillac, General Motors, The Cadillac & LaSalle Club, SeaRay or FPMarine.com; we are simple circus folk making videos of silly stunts, we have no money and aren't worth suing, so there.

  • @duanewong

    I have a 1976 Cadillac Seville with bucket seats where the passenger side power seat works but the driver's side six way power seat doesn't work. It clicks when I operate the switch, but the motor will not move. The courtesy lights at night dim when I attempt to operate the power seat switch. I tried spraying penetrating oil on all four bolts and nuts I could see under the seat. It started to work intermittently. But, after spraying the front bolts and nuts which were rusty, it stopped working. The ground wire with the round end that is supposed to bolt on to the floor I couldn't find. Does this sound like a motor problem or relay problem? Or just a ground problem? Sincerely Yours, Duane Wong Somerset, PA.

    • @westofthelakecadillacclub
      @westofthelakecadillacclub Před 16 hodinami

      Hi Duane, thanks for watching and getting in touch. I’ve never worked on a Seville of any type, although I think they are all beautiful classics. The power seats are all relatively the same. Spraying the mounting bolts and seeing a change in operation is leading me to a possible grounding issue. It’s possible the ground wire was hanging by a thread and is now separated completely. Easiest test is using a jumper ground screwed to the nearest mounting bolt for the motor and securing the other end to a body ground. If the seat moves, it a ground issue. If not, check all the connectors on the motor, relay and transmission. If those are tight, you’ve got to start at square one and pull the seat out of the car to test all the components. Let us know how it goes.

    finally getting back to putting steering back on ,had to make a special tool to compress the spring,but it does'nt seem to compress the spring enough to get t C clip ---so back to watching the video cant do the part where you ,reverse the puller.when i screw that piece in to the upper shaft then try to put pressure on it ,it just pulls the upper shaft out ,when i put on pressure ,the metal plate plus the part with of the collar where the c clip goes behind it moves with plate-,so do i need to remove the plate then try and put pressure on ,you sent me some literature ,the c clip has to go between the plate an the shoulder --cant seem to sepperate the two, thanks good video going to watch again

    • @westofthelakecadillacclub
      @westofthelakecadillacclub Před 2 dny

      Yeah, the video could be a little clearer. Get a bolt that has the same thread as the locking ring that screws into the center of the hub (the big disc with the slots and the threaded bolt on the end). Tighten that so it acts like the telescoping lock is in place (but without the big disc getting in the way) and it will keep the column from pulling out. Good luck.

    • @westofthelakecadillacclub
      @westofthelakecadillacclub Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Isaac: You could have one of two problems. First, check the adjustment of your shift linkage; your shift lever may seem like it is in PARK, but it may not be fully engaging. Second, you may have a broken or missing PARK pin on the transmission. Either way, if you aren't handy mechanically, a good transmission shop should be able to figure it out quickly. Thanks for watching and reaching out.

    I own a 1977 Eldorado Biarritz, And I'm having trouble with the car when it comes to power. Or electricity? Every time I park the car I take off the wiring for the battery. And I don't know how to fix that because if I leave the battery on the car, it drains the power and I don't know how to fix that

    • @westofthelakecadillacclub
      @westofthelakecadillacclub Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Isaac: That is one of the hardest issues to chase down. You could have any of a dozen different problems from something as simple as the trunk light staying on because it isn't adjusted correctly to some electrical motor that is always running due to some other issue. You really need to start checking every electrical component one at a time. If nothing obvious pops out, you'll need a multi-meter and start reading amp draws one fuse at a time until you find the circuit that is draining. It is a hard job and requires patience and skill. The good news is that there are very few computers or microprocessors that can trick you. Everything on that car is relatively straight forward. If you don't have that skill level, you'll need to find someone with automotive electrical skills. Household electric is completely different, so a regular electrician won't be of much help. Best of luck, that is a tough problem to solve.

    Thank you so much for the video. I had no idea that the switch controlled so much. Mine is working fine, but I have watched your videos before and decided to take a look at this one just in case I ever had that issue. You are absolutely correct. $500 buck is absolutely outrageous and I would not buy ANY item they would have to sell. To save your viewers time and expense, most of this era's GM parts can be fixed by simply taking them apart and cleaning them. Just be respectful that the part is going on 50 years old and take it apart with care. The only part I was not able to fix on my 76 convertible was the illuminated entry delay relay found under the left kick panel. I carefully opened it up only to find all sorts of rust. It was so bad that most of the resisters were in rusty pieces and the PC board was way beyond repair. I am still looking for another one and found one but like your greedy little friend, this guy wanted well over $200 bucks for his, and no guarantee it would even work. So I purchased one off eBay for a 77-78 Eldorado for $20 bucks and made a new wiring harness so I did not have to cut the factory wires in case I ever found the original and it works just fine. It works exactly the same but the plug configuration is different. So with some spade clips, I made an adapter harness. I have a 1975 Convertible parts car that I need to strip and I will definitely grab that part as well as I had no idea how expensive and impossible they were to find. Thanks again for the video!

    • @westofthelakecadillacclub
      @westofthelakecadillacclub Před 6 měsíci

      Most of them were painted on at the factory. You can have a pin stripe artist paint a new one for around $400, or you can get a tape stripe for half that. The choice depends on what you want the end result to be. If you are looking for points at a Cadillac Club event, go with the paint. If you are just going cruising, the tape is fine. Either way, take plenty of pictures and measure the size of the tape before you paint your car so you can get as close to original as possible. So is Cadillac the reason why sealed beams have that little nub positioned conveniently between the electrical contacts? Or did Cadillac just happen to discover how to make good use of that little nub that has always been there? My first experience with these lamp monitors was my aunt’s 1972 Fleetwood Brougham. I was just 5 years old in 1972! And I’m trying to recall the rear lamp monitors on that same car. The two little red lights. Was it contained in a little snorkel looking thing that sat atop the rear package shelf? Or was it integrated into the upper rear windshield trim?

      Yes, those little nubs are on there for just that reason. That's why you have to buy the right lamps that still have the nub. Good luck with your "new-to-you" Cadillac!

      My grandmother had a 72 Fleetwood too, and it had the snorkel in the middle of the rear seat - like you said, up from the package tray.

      @@DanTheManIOM So cool! What color was your grandmother’s Fleetwood? My aunt’s was metallic red with a white top and red leather inside. As a little kid I loved the fold down footrests for the backseat passengers. And I also liked the backseat fold down center armrest and I’d sit atop it like it was a booster seat!

      @@CH67guy1 it was brown ? green ? I'm colorblind. and it had fabric seats, light tan vinyl roof, she used to park it at a diagonal in a 2 car garage so that it would fit !! She replaced it later with a 1979 LeBaron four door, white with a blue top, blue velour seats and it was much smaller. Easier for her to drive.

      Yes, but it is my understanding that there is a separate one for each side and they are located behind the opera lamp on the interior door pillar trim.

    What a great video I just stumbled upon it. I have had a few Cadillacs from the 70s. I had a 76 talisman and 2 78 triple white Biarritzs' want to find a Seville Elegante with a moonroof and or a Coupe DeVille with a moonroof Cadillac called it an astro roof

      The window sticker on my 77 Eldo Biarritz shows the Astroroof as a 2777 dollar option on an 11.8K dollar car. FWIW. - They also offered a solid sliding roof.

    Hi. I have a 1988 Eldorado Biarritz. It also has opera lights. ANY idea where the inverter is? Not in the trunk. Looks like both lamps are wired to one in the trunk. One wire is grounded behind back seat. The other ends up coming up through right kick plate. can't see where it goes after that. This is a very thin wire. I did put a meter on wires at the opera light and shows 12V, not 110V. I'm confused. BTW, great sense of humor. I sent you an email a couple weeks ago, but no answer. Rob

      Hey Rob: I sent a reply, check your spam folder. Here’s our best guess: The inverters should be behind the quarter interior trim panel in tour back seat. They changed to a separate inverter for each side in 1988. It is believed that was done to cut down on the length of 110 volt wires running in the car. Let us know if you find it. Tom

    Awesome!!! So many of these cars have awful modern wipers. They are a major eyesore to the original car style. I look first for original hubcaps and original wipers…. If they don’t have both of these features in place…. I don’t even bother looking at the car. Throws off the entire look of what total original or total restoration is!
