How do you turn ignition without key to remove? In the same situation.
@@verynicehighfive9449 Good question. In my experience you have to summon forth your best car theft skills and punch the lock if you don’t have keys. Usually, when you buy a used column without keys, you have to knock the face off of the lock cylinder, strip the tumblers out and operate the cylinder with a screwdriver. Back in the 70s, any kid could do that in about 90 seconds; just be careful not to crack the collar that holds the cylinder (the dumb teenagers in the 70s always broke them). Thanks for watching.
I tried doing the same on my 85 deville with the turn lever but it's round not square so it broke, I used plyers and not I can't turn my brights on

I have a 1974 Cadillac Eldorado and got a key almost snapped off and stuck in the ignition at the moment. This is seriously such a help if I need to do this, in Australia here too so not a lot of help or knowledge available. I am in your club but the Victorian/Australian leg of it.

Just to add something, what I did was to take a bolt with the same treat as the locking plate, cut of the head and ground a grove in it, I then screwed the bolt ( now a all treat ) into the column, locking the telescoping function, now your tool ( free at O Reilly's ) will fit right over it and you will be able to compress the locking plate.

finally getting back to putting steering back on ,had to make a special tool to compress the spring,but it does'nt seem to compress the spring enough to get t C clip ---so back to watching the video cant do the part where you ,reverse the puller.when i screw that piece in to the upper shaft then try to put pressure on it ,it just pulls the upper shaft out ,when i put on pressure ,the metal plate plus the part with of the collar where the c clip goes behind it moves with plate-,so do i need to remove the plate then try and put pressure on ,you sent me some literature ,the c clip has to go between the plate an the shoulder --cant seem to sepperate the two, thanks good video going to watch again
Yeah, the video could be a little clearer. Get a bolt that has the same thread as the locking ring that screws into the center of the hub (the big disc with the slots and the threaded bolt on the end). Tighten that so it acts like the telescoping lock is in place (but without the big disc getting in the way) and it will keep the column from pulling out. Good luck.

Thanks super helpful! I was stuck. Unfortunately the key lock actuator is jammed and I can’t get the cylinder out. Also, does the pressure from screwing in the final nut get the steering wheel to seat on the teeth?
Don’t be afraid to use a flathead screwdriver between the chrome cylinder and the steering column to apply light pressure to help remove the cylinder. The steering wheel should seat well on the teeth before putting the nut on. If it doesn’t go on easily, turn the wheel back and forth slightly to align the teeth.
looks like your c clip actually lock in to the shaft i front of the plate-----my plat has a like a big collar on it about a 6 point so my c clip must go on to the upper shaft but can't be cause the upper shaft just comes out=recently bought the car ,no keys
75 cadilac steering wheel c clip will not go on the plate so does the c clip go on after you have put pressure on the the c goes into the upper shaft ????
On my 1976 GMC Motorhome someone removed my steering wheel and then punched all sorts of pieces off the "plastic flower" below the metal round base to force out the ignition switch. Are some GM columns a bit different. I did not see any round plastic flower below the metal ring of your Cadillac. The GMC Motorhome shared many parts with Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs of that era.

This is very helpful. But when I removed the hazard switch and pulled the turn signal switch out, the metal piece, into which the hazard switch screws, was lying in the column. How and where does it attach to the turn signal switch? Efforts so far are unsuccessful. Happy to email if easier to discuss and show you what I mean… thanks!

I like the video, very helpfull, i have 79 fleetwood which as of this past weekend has the ignition key stuck in the cylinder, the engine will not turn on or off. when the car was running it wouldnt turn off had to remove the altenator wire & to start i will probably have to jump the starter..so its safe to say the the ingition cylinder has gone bad ...any other help would be appreciated, thank you
It sounds like you are correct. The 77-78-79 is a little different than the 75-76, but not enough to cause you a problem. If you are able, get a copy of the shop manual for 1979; if you run into any problems, you will find the answer there. Thanks for watching, all the best!

I have a 74 eldorado with a tilt telescopic steering column that is very loose. I was told it’s four screws way down under where you stopped. Any chance of you doing a video on how to get down to tighten those?
What part is loose? Does the whole column move, just the telescoping part, or the tilt part? If you let me know, I can get you the right information.

What size screws are there holding the horn pad on

I have a Seville of this era I just put a new cylinder in. But after installing it the key doesn't turn more than just a little bit. I can't even turn the ignition with pliers with the cylinder removed anymore. Any suggestions?
Thanks for watching! It is likely that the rod that goes from the cylinder to the ignition switch at the base of the column has become disconnected. Remove the lock cylinder, find the rod and put it back in place. That should fix it, but please contact us at westofthelakeclc@gmail.com if you need more help.

i have not understood how you disconnect the wire horn from inside the steering wheel. you just pulled it. is it not connected in any way?
Thanks for watching. This was one of our early videos before we discovered a device called a "tripod". Our newer videos are much better 😁 The horn wire is removed by pushing the connector slightly inward and rotating it counter clockwise, kind of like an old barrel fuse holder.
@@westofthelakecadillacclub thank you for reply. My car has the outer plastic tube destroyed and the wire is stuck with superglue. That's why I haven't got it. I suppose i'll cut the wire at the middle and fix it after with a small conector.

I haha a 1972 el dorado and was changing the turn signal switch. The process os the same as this video but the switch is hard to connected to the metal part that conecta to the switch lever outside of the steering wheel. I am struggling
Hi Daniel: I'm so happy we are able to help you with your car. You probably don't have the tilt column in your car, so the turn signal is held in place by a screw. Once you remove the internal switch (red plastic in our video) you will see the turn signal screw. Send an e-mail to me if you have other questions and I can send you photos from the manual.
i think i goofed for some reason i pulled out the short shaft , i'm starting to put mine back together,and the metal key part the half moon piece has a notch in it ,is that a stop so the rod does not slid into other part of shaft-i have watched your sight about 100 times i should have watched it first thanks, i think its to stop rod from going down further but i;ll wait for your advice thanks

@@westofthelakecadillacclub yes you sent it to me, i have built a tool to put pressure on the plat ,but that does'nt work my plate has a shoulder on it about 1/8 th thick so c clip has no grove to slid into it must then go into the shaft book says to pull out the upper shaft about one inch and i never get spring to tighten-- thanks
i have the column lowered trying to pull the plastic plate out the wire are to tight and cant seem to move got ANY IDEA THANKS
Hi, thanks for writing. With the bolts loosened, push the column up and the gap between the bracket and the column should allow for a little movement. If you are needing to pull the wires completely out for the replacement of a part, attach a strong string to the connector and you can use that to feed the new wire in. Good for you for taking on this project. No worries, you’ll do fine.

@@studeystudebaker Once you get that tab pushed down, the cylinder should pull straight out. You may have to jiggle it a bit, but you only need to turn it to access the tab. We’re based in the Chicago area, but are currently in Asia, so a road trip is out of the question for a while!🤣
What exactly did you push in with the small screwdriver " whamoo" I am stuck there
Thanks for watching, the tab we push is seen on the end of the cylinder in the next scene. There is a slot that runs nearly the length of the cylinder and the tab at the end of that holds the cylinder in the column. Simply push the tab and “wham o”, the cylinder pops out. Full disclosure: A rare few are different and are held in by a screw. There was no rhyme or reason as to which one was used in any particular column, but the one with the wham o tab was most common, like 95%.

Have issue with my Cadillac
The Ignition Switch (cylinder and key) went bad , along with the Ignition inner bushing, which is a rigid plastic sleeve .
Found it online from a Guy that 3D prints it for $700 USD.
LOL should cost no more than 7 dollars. So my 1969 is parked for now.
I have a 76 fleetwood. I am having issues with the horn honking when I turn signal right. Also, there is clicking sound for about ten seconds after far is turned over. Hazard lights stay on until that tens seconds is over too. Any suggestions???
Also, the hazard knob is missing altogether.
Hey Dustin: Any time the horn is honking it is usually the big spring being installed wrong (it should snap into place on the wheel side - if it misses one of the keepers it will honk at all the wrong times) or because that plastic bushing is cracked or missing a tab (easily replaced with a reproduction part shown in the video). The hazard lights is a bit of a mystery, it could be a wire is nicked in the harness or it could have something to do with the missing knob. You really want to tear that column apart and check all the wires, make sure the horn spring is installed correctly and the hazard knob can be found at a junk yard, on eBay or contact ELDORick@yahoo.com, a used parts guy in Chicago, he has dozens of columns and will sell parts from them rather than the whole column like most sellers. @@dustinjm19 Yes, it was just pure luck that kept your horn from blowing. They are under $20, and you can use that part number and shop around for the best price.
On my 78 Coupe, the buzzer doesn't sound at all when the csr is off, door is open, and keys in ignition. I've checked everything via the diagrams I have and the only thing I haven't checked in the switch in the key. If I remove what you removed in yours would that give me access to check and see if the cause of the issue is within the column of my 78 coupe? Thanks.
Yes, there is a little two pronged copper contactor that sits in the column just past the tail end of the ignition switch. When the key is pushed in, the two prongs contact each other and complete the circuit to make the buzzer sound. When the key is turned, the contact is broken and the buzzing stops. They very often get bent out of shape and the ends won't touch. Take it out, straighten the prongs and it should work for you. Thanks for watching.

When the lever is to the right it should tighten right, meaning you can't pull out the steering wheel towards you...it should hold firmly. Well if so, mine doesn't. It still moves in and out not excessively but it does....does that mean the 3 bolts that secure this lever is loose on my car? Thanks.
@@edgarherrera5085 Yes, that is the 99% most likely cause, but a retainer may be worn. I’ve never seen one go bad, but I’ve heard about one once. Hopefully you won’t be number two.🤣
@@westofthelakecadillacclub lol. Let's hope not. I only use the Coupe on my days off from work. I'll take the horn pad off and see what's going on in there. I'm tempted to fix, look into the key buzzer thing but not to comfortable removing the steering wheel 😬
@West of the Lake Cadillac Club Chicago hey there. The telescoping lever bolts weren't aligned correctly and I realigned them and now it holds as it should. Still haven't gotten around to the key reminder switch but the light associated with the buzzer illuminates off and on and sounds the buzzer and it happens when I'm turning, intermittently. And forgot to mention in my first comment, once I start the car and it's running I'm able to pull the key out of the switch, now I know it's suppose to right? So something is wrong there too huh. Lol. thanks.

Hello, I've commented on this post before. Hopefully you'll get the notification, I can't put back the C clip. I'm using the correct tool to compress the lock plate but it's not doing anything. As I'm turning the lock it's suppose to push down right, well it's actually pulling up the upper shaft from the center. And so this is where I'm at. Any help is greatly appreciated. I came to this video for the how to because my horn plastic thing is broken apart causing the horn to go off when I would turn. Lol. Anyhow, how do I keep upper shaft from sliding out so I can push lock plate down. Thanks
Hi Edgar: That's an easy problem to solve. Simply use the telescoping lock ring (4:15 in the video). Screw that lock back into the center of the shaft and it will stop it from moving while you are installing the clamp. If it is too big and gets in the way, use a long bolt with the same threads and it will do the same job. Unscrew it when the clip is in place and go on as before. Sorry, I could have been more clear in the video; instead, you ended up looking like you were in a Three Stooges video wrestling with the shaft. No matter, good job taking this on as a do-it-yourself project. That car of yours will be back together in no time! Thanks for asking.

I went to home depot and bought longer bolts and the nuts like how you have it with the steering puller but the one I got isn't the same as yours. Wish I could send you the pics to show what I have. And still that didn't work either. Think I need to buy additional nuts to hold it on the other end. I have them as per your video bolt thru puller and nut on the other side. Hope that made sense

@@edgarherrera5085 I made a tool just for that thought I was brilliant- but so far it does not separate the plate from the collar so I never get clearance to in slid in the c clip I put angle on top of steering housing the 5 inch hose clamps then compression tool 3/8 bolt on center looks like it should work modified it still can’t get space to slide c clip
