  • We remove an interior door panel, window glass and power window regulator in order to replace a bad power window motor. Then we put it all back together again and IT WORKS! It is a difficult 2 person job. Watch the video all the way to the end because you'll learn an important lesson about marking the bolts so they go back in the correct holes (HINT: They all look alike, but they're all different sizes - thanks GM Engineering!) ***NOTE: After posting this video, we were made aware of the instructions in the Fisher Body Manual. The manual suggests drilling three 3/4-inch holes in the inner door panel to access the motor bolts and remove the motor without taking the glass and tracks out. Not only does that permanently ruin the door panel, but it adds a couple of hours to the job and increases the chances of amputating your fingers, leaving your secondary horn disabled. Okay, the secondary horn thing (middle finger) might just be a Chicago thing, but still: Thanks GM Engineering! If anyone wants to ship us a door, we'll try it on your car.

You should do a video in the power locks now. Great job!

I didn’t know this is said to be difficult and replaced my window motor on my ‘73 E-Body alone. Great video, thanks!

Have you ever removed the toggle cable from the driver side mirror?

Thanks for watching and reaching out. If you mean removing the mirror and the cable as a single unit, yes, that is pretty easy. If you mean removing the cable from the mirror itself, I've never been able to do that. I tried to reverse engineer how they built it new, and haven't been able to figure it out. I have a half dozen mirrors with cables that no longer control the glass, so if anyone knows how to rebuild those, I'm intereseted.

Yeah, the problem I’m having is I want to get my mirror re-chromed but the chroming business said that I have to remove the cable before they chrome the housing of the mirror. I had one extra mirror that I tried to reverse engineer it to remove the cable, but I ended up ruining the cable trying to get the cable out of the housing mechanism.

@@andremitchell4966 Yeah, that's exactly the same thing I found. According to the Fisher Body Manual, those mirror cables were form fitted at the factory and excepting for the glass, they are not serviceable. If anyone out there knows of someone who has figured out how to re-cable those mirrors, let us know.

Do you have a link to get the motor replacement for the window?

No, unfortunately, as hard as this job was, the hardest part was getting the correct motor. OPGI and RockAuto list the motors, but both times we got the drivers motor rather than the passenger motor we ordered. Out of frustration, we took the motor from a new one and fitted it to the passenger side. That's not easy, but we are professional electricians trained in motor rebuilding, so we made it work. At the end of the video we say "Good luck", locating the correct motor is part of that. Wish we had better news. Thanks for watching.

I ordered it from O’Reilly, next day availability a couple of years ago; now - not sure.
