Public Speaking: Practice on Your Dog
If you’re like most people, you never think about your speaking skills unless you’re in a lesson, preparing a speech or giving a speech. It’s compartmentalized. You forget that public speaking is just heightened conversation. So, every conversation is a chance to practice your speaking skills, at some level. You need to practice on your dog!

Raising Your Voice
zhlédnutí 2,3KPřed rokem
When people don’t pay attention to you it’s tempting to raise your voice, but that’s often counterproductive. Here are three guiding principles that will encourage listeners pay attention, listen receptively and respond to your message.
Voice Training: Speaking with No Breath
zhlédnutí 3,6KPřed 2 lety
If you’re like most people, you just talk. As long as you’re producing a sound and pronouncing the words you’re good to go. All too often, you’re not using enough breath for that process. You end up with a small, shallow, scratchy voice that wears down your listeners and wears out too quickly. Here’s a real life example that highlights the problem and suggests a solution.
Ending with a Croak
zhlédnutí 899Před 2 lety
When you end your phrases with a raspy, scratchy sound, your listeners start to feel that you’re not fully committed to what you’re saying. They get the sense that you’re not confident, or that you’re bored, that you’re holding something back or that you don’t wish to engage with them. Here’s how to cultivate a strong, smooth tone that projects strength, confidence and credibility. Trailing off...
Voice Training: Finding More Space
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 2 lety
There are different approaches to voice training and they all have particular areas of focus. I have always taken the perspective that good voice is all about openness and that openness starts in your body. That idea is so intuitive for me that I often assume it makes perfect sense to everyone else, but I know from experience that it doesn’t. Here’s my attempt to explain one of the underlying a...
Nose-Breathing Speakers
zhlédnutí 1,7KPřed 2 lety
Speakers who breathe through their nose are actually pretty rare. Here are three examples of speakers who are nose-breathing. Notice the result is usually noisy, effortful and distracting. Obama makes it work only because the formal occasion allows him to speak very deliberately, with long pauses and slow, silent in-breaths. All three speakers resort to mouth-breaths at least twice during their...
Public Speaking: 3 Common Traps
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 2 lety
When it comes to public speaking and presentation, I would guess that most speakers have little formal training. They rely on common sense, trusting their instincts, and it works well enough to get the job done. But following your instincts can sometimes be misleading. Here are three common, and faulty, assumptions that will undermine your performance.
Take More Time to Inhale
zhlédnutí 2,8KPřed 2 lety
Everyone knows breathing is important to speaking, but most people pay no real attention to their breath when they’re actually speaking. They’re entirely focused on the words they’re saying: meanwhile, their breaths become small, quick, tense and shallow. As a result, they become rushed, anxious and self-conscious. Taking more time to inhale will help you be more relaxed, calm, deliberate and p...
Public Speaking: The First Thing I Notice
zhlédnutí 921Před 2 lety
First impressions matter a great deal in presentation and public speaking. One small detail that makes a big difference is how you’re standing. So many speakers are shifting, rocking and pacing. Here’s a simple technique to help you feel, look and sound more calm, confident and credible.
So You Hate the Sound of Your Voice
zhlédnutí 2,7KPřed 2 lety
Like many people, you might have a negative reaction when hearing a recording of your speaking voice. The voice you’re used to hearing inside your head is not the voice your friends and family are used to hearing. That’s not a news flash, but have you stopped to consider what that means for everyday speech and presentation? There’s a reliable way to monitor your speaking voice, and it might sur...
Public Speaking: The First Five Seconds
zhlédnutí 2,1KPřed 3 lety
Many people confess to being nervous at the start of a speech or presentation but then settling down and finding their groove within a few minutes. By that time, the damage has been done and your listeners have already tuned out. Here are five tips to make sure you hit the ground running and make a compelling first impression.
You've Got Rhythm: Breathing and Speaking
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 3 lety
Most people experience speaking solely in terms of words coming out with no awareness of breath going in. There have to be moments in the flow of speech where noting is being said because breath needs to flow in. Here’s an exercise to help you learn to feel that rhythm. Emerson: Change Start with an in-breath. Use that breath to speak each phrase. Feel the words flowing out on the breath. Conti...
Tongue Twisters: Why Tie Your Tongue in Knots?
zhlédnutí 1,2KPřed 3 lety
Tongue twisters are commonly recommended for improving speech and diction. While they might be fun and amusing, tongue twisters can actually be counterproductive, if used too soon and without awareness of how articulation is supposed to work. Here are two reasons why you need to address other skills before you tackle tongue twisters.
Public Speaking Skills: Video Rehearsal
zhlédnutí 1KPřed 3 lety
Of course rehearsal is an important public speaking skill but to do it effectively you need objective feedback. Although you might dislike seeing yourself on video, it’s a powerful tool for evaluating your current skills, focusing your practice and tracking your progress. Here are some specific things to look for when you’re using video rehearsal to enhance your public speaking skills.
Public Speaking Skills: Rehearsal
zhlédnutí 1,4KPřed 3 lety
Rehearsal is one of the most neglected aspects of public speaking and presentation yet it can take your performance from mediocre to great. The improvements just keep coming and the speech just keeps getting better. It’s not sexy activity but diligent rehearsal will raise your speaking ability head and shoulders above that of your peers.

Thank you
You're welcome. I hope it was helpful.
Thank you
I know someone who needs this advice!!
This man is gem in the field of effective communication...Thank you Sir Hats off for this knowledge.
You're very welcome. Glad it was helpful.
I need high notes... So this exercise help me?
I'm not a singing teacher so you might get better advice from a different coach. I do know that straw phonation helps to smooth the transition from lower to higher registers.
thank you so much for putting this together!
This is a miracle!! Now people actually can understand me when I started breathing more. Just wondering if breathing should be quiet or should I hear the inhalation sound?
In an ideal world your in-breath should be silent. Noisy in-breaths are a sign of tension and constriction.
Hi, Jay. I hope you’re well……I’m still watching ur videos in 2024🫶🏽
Hi, Kia. I'm well. I hope you are too.
How many minutes a day should we exercise this?
There's no specific amount of time to suggest. I think practicing consistently over a period of months is more important, then trying to cultivate more openness in conversation as it becomes more familiar.
@@voiceandspeech Also I have bruxism/tight jaw at night. Will this affect the results?
@@clawspider968 Yes, any kind of jaw tension will have a negative affect. That's why jaw relaxation is an important first step. As I mentioned in the video, forcing your jaw to open more is not what you're aiming for.
@@voiceandspeech But is it still possible for me to make any progress? My jaw is not tight during day. My life is really hard from slurred speech
@@clawspider968 Progress is always possible with time and practice
I record myself with decibel meter, even when i whisper, the reading is above 75, and maybe above 90 sometimes.
This guy needs to watch a video on how to not talk so slow
So talk like a hippie?
I produce a lot of saliva while public speaking. It forces me to choke on my saliva, and then my voice becomes shaky. Any idea why this is happening?
Some of my colleagues speculate that too much saliva is the result of tongue tension. That makes a certain amount of sense since you have salivary glands at the base of your tongue. In any case, if it's causing you to choke, that makes me think that you're not giving yourself time to swallow, so I wonder if rushing might not be the real issue.
@voiceandspeech thank you for answer! I appreciate it. I'll try to talk slower and exercise my tongue a little.
Thank you Mr. Jay
It's really important to engage the back rib muscles, but it's equally important that the side and front ribs are engaged as well. If you over engage the back at the expense of the front and sides, you'll feel like the voice is emanating as much from your centre back as from the sternum (at the front), but there is a danger that you'll artificially reinforce the voice (over use certain muscles, particularly the ring cricoids). I have to say that I can hear some of this in this video. It makes the voice sound very hollow and dark, but a little out of focus. Listen to a great opera singer speak. They don't speak like this.
A good voice is a gift from god ...and i thank you to make me feel i can improve my voice with exercises ! 🌹
Well said!!!❤
This is awesome thanks ! Been singing for awhile and justbread a book exactly related to this situation and thays why and watching this video i n3ed to break this habit to level up my singing! Tuanks again golden ✨️ content pretty there is a masive amount of people completely unaware of this
You're very welcome. I'm so glad it's helpful. Spread the word.
Thanks a lot sir.
I get passionate about something I'm excited about and my wife of 50 years tells me to quiet down that I am physically hurting her ears. I am sick and tired of this argument. I don't intend to do it. I feel that I can't fix it. I mean well. This tendency to raise my voice contributed to me losing my teaching career when I raised my voice in defense at parent conferences. I want to change but feel it's a part of who I am and can't change.
Our voice is so personal that any criticism feels like an attack on who we are. But when our vocal habits start to undermine our social interactions we can address that in the same way we would seek to improve any other behavior that creates conflict. At first, changing our voice feels like changing our personality, but at some level it's just a matter of learning new skills and getting used to new sensations.
Thank you so much. I'm so happy to hear that I can change and so angry that I now have no excuse. I'm still not sure of exactly what ACTIONS I need to take to condition myself to watch my volume when I am excited. It would be one thing if I were angry and reacting to an attack or hurt. But when I'm excited to reveal information that i have learned it really hurts to be told that I am HURTING and not helping.@@voiceandspeech
@@GeorgePossley That's a harder question to answer because voice training isn't a matter of "do these three things." You might want to look into getting some basic training for a start. If I were to suggest just one thing you could do right now, without taking lessons, I might say, "Take a relaxed in-breath before you speak." It's easier said then done, especially in the heat of the moment, but it will make a difference.
I’m 43 my voice never changed as I got older
Are you okay with that
@@voiceandspeech if there was an easy way to change it other than surgery no. The harassment I get from it is unreal.

I was told at work today I had amazing resonance while speaking. I don't even understand what that means 😂
Think of it as richness and fullness, a pleasing and engaging tone of voice.
Great content1 100%
Oh my goodness, I'm in l❤❤ve! Thank you so much ❤❤❤

Thank you.
Im going to start implementing your techniques. I can already notice a massive decrease in anxiety just by stopping and breathing, regardless of how awkward it might be. Thank you for this, I'm so happy i found you!
You're welcome. It's so gratifying to hear that the approach is helping, that it's not just theory. Good luck with your practice.
Jay, this is new and great. I do the body curl you taught me but will do this one as much as I can. Tim Kwan
The words you use warmly expresses the meaning.. 💚 I need to hear that..
One question i always get confused that should we start with breathe from nose and speak or mouth and speak for better speech ??

Thx jay 🌷
You're very welcome.
thank you so much teacher <3
For me, I always feel there is not enough space down there to get a substantial amount of air into. So I feel I always have to resort to chest breathing. Do you have any advice on that? I‘m also very slim, sp that could play a role too. Thank you very much!
Unless you're a singer, you don't really need a substantial amount of air. Typically, you're always working with a medium or even a small breath for speaking.
too bad I am an opera singer actually :)@@voiceandspeech
@@moishemillerr Haha, yeah that's a different ballgame. In that activity you're accessing every bit of lung space at your disposal, including your chest. For all the time I spend teaching diaphragmatic breathing, I must admit that there's not one right way to breathe. Your whole body can breathe, and that's going to change depending on your physical position, the demands of the moment and a whole range of other factors.
Using this in my school manhunt combined with my ghillie suit
Do you offer one to one online training?
Yes. You can reach out to me through my web site voiceandspeech.com/
I’m loud when I feel like the person I’m talking to won’t hear me. Not REALLY hearing me.
You've made an interesting observation. You might explore how to use the of your voice to engage your listener rather than raising the .
My voice has started trembling or shaking while talking it sounds like i m crying 😢 .....
I know how frustrating and embarrassing that can be, but I assure you it's not permanent. With the right techniques, time and practice, you can develop a steady, confident speaking voice.
I normally get nervous with a shaking hand. This is so embarrasing for me. How do I overcome this ❤😂😢😮😅
It takes time and practice-and there are no quick fixes-but if you make it your mission to become a confident engaging speaker, I promise you will get there. Take advantage of all the training available to you, apply the principles I suggest in the video and seize every opportunity to get in front of people. You will make progress, I guarantee it.
Love u Jay! Watching this again rn at 2:14AM doing the work on myself. TY💕
I agree too fast is not good, but too slow isn't good either. It can make a person sound slow (and boring), especially in an industry where people are high performing and need to move at a fast pace.
I agree, but speed and energy are two different things. Energy and engagement come from the inside, not simply speaking more words per minute.
My ENT talks louder than Ive ever hears anyone talk. Maybe some people are hard of hearing but she knows i have tinnitus and hyperacusis. She hurts my ears but thankfully I don't expect to see her anytime soon.
Why i feel nervous while speaking with others
This is an old video but perhaps it might help. czcams.com/video/lVEuoX-vL9g/video.html
thanks i started taking deep breath and it helped
You're welcome! Glad to hear it helped.
And that also causes me hearing problems. And even with my hearing aids. It helps me here. But I can't tell how loud I'm talking, A lot of the time. And idk what to do, you know?, Idk how i help it???, And Thanks
This is where it becomes important to monitor your speech by "feel" rather than by listening to yourself. It's hard to explain in a few sentences, but you need to know how the appropriate volume level feels at a tactile level. What we hear inside our head isn't reliable feedback, and that's true for everyone, with or without hearing aids.
Thanks@@voiceandspeech
however it must be through diaphragm , right teacher? i mean not through *chest*
That's correct.
Thanks for the lesson. My husband was in a bad accident and he had to have tubes put in his ears at a young age to drain the blood from his head. When he got older and we were married they fell and I began speaking to him in a louder voice for 13 years. Now I'm at home with family and I feel I'm annoying to them because of my loud voice. I'll try your lesson to help me because it hurts to speak loudly. My family will be grateful.

Good luck with your practice. Let me know if you have any questions.
