Just curious as to why you don't mend upstream on the dries?

Hi Davie. It would be a nice video to mix a fishing video and fly tying session together. You could edit the fishing down to say, 10 minutes and then have a video showing the tying of a fly (the fly) that you were using on the river. Just a thought. Obviously we all love the tying and fishing vids but this would introduce a bit of a new format. Anyway, enjoy your Monday afternoon!! Andy

I am watching this about 5 months after you posted it. How has the sparkle pupa done when fishing it this season? It’s fascinating to see how you have adapted the fly to your style. Much respect. It looks great. I’m about to tie a batch of emergent and deep sparkle pupa flies for a local Healing Waters chapter, so I am watching every video I can find that demonstrates how to tie it and next will go back to his book. I learned to tie it in a class with Gary in the 1990s, but I can’t haven’t tied it in about 20 years. He said it would it work, but I secretly wondered until I fished it on the West Branch of the Penobscot River in Maine. The landlocked salmon in pools and slow eddies loved it. If I may, I suggest you get some Antron yarn in orange (Charlie Craven has it if your vendor doesn’t carry it). In line with Gary’s theory of color attraction, orange is a powerful attractor in late day sun or just before sunset.. I have yet to find an orange caddis, but the color really works on a clear day. As a result, I tried orange on other flies in other situations, and it worked for striped bass, bluefish, trout and freshwater bass. Other flyfishers might give a strange look when they see your orange fly, but you can respond with a grin when you are catching fish. Be well.
