I'm posting from the States; and in unsettled times like these, a video like this one is doubly appreciated. Thanks, Davie! 👍

Great filming as usual Davie. Some lovely brownies on the long hackled dry. Thanks 👍

The big one came from my favorite spot. Not that I've ever fished it, just watching you fish the Doon, that spot seems to always produce. Thanks for getting me to remember the old days and tying and fishing long hackles (skaters) again. The trout won't tell me but I swear they think it's a crane fly ( Daddy long legs). Whatever it is, it works. I like tying mine with silk and mole just because I'm old.

Loved the video, as always. Thanks to you I can now tie flies that I'm not afraid to show to others. I would love to spend a few days fishing with you in the driftless area of Wisconsin, lots and lots of browns and quite a few brook trout. You would love it. Having a 30-50 fish day is not uncommon. Thanks for what you do!

Just curious as to why you don't mend upstream on the dries?

Hi Davie. It would be a nice video to mix a fishing video and fly tying session together. You could edit the fishing down to say, 10 minutes and then have a video showing the tying of a fly (the fly) that you were using on the river. Just a thought. Obviously we all love the tying and fishing vids but this would introduce a bit of a new format. Anyway, enjoy your Monday afternoon!! Andy

Davie, Greetings from New England. I am currently reading an old book (1972) called "Fishing the Dry Fly as a Living Insect" by Leonard M. Wright, Jr. His method is different from yours, but he was a big advocate of lifelike movement in the dry fly. I wonder if you have seen this book. I would like to see you tie the fly that is on the cover of his book. He calls it a "hackle wing caddis", I have heard it called "Wright's fluttering caddis." Many thanks.

      Hi @chasnaj,
I've never seen this book before, it looks interesting I'll see if I can find a copy. I have tyed many flies over the years using long hackles for extra movement even on caddis and I have a video of one of them on CZcams so here is a link to it for you to see..

Thanks for the link to that long hackle caddis. It is very much like what Wright describes, but with some definite improvements. The cdc body and the horns make it look more like the natural and the way you form the wing make it more durable than Wright’s. I’m going to tie a bunch up!

I enjoyed the video. I noticed you passed through what looked like a farm. My question is: do you need the owners permission to cross?

Tough fishing when nothing is rising. Given the wall and the grass, have you tried an ant or beetle pattern there?
