Mixing a wedding band
Great video!
Thanks! @@MichaelNatrin
Man, what an awesome weddingband. How did you ring out that PA with all those People around on the second Gig? Or did you get the chance to do so at all? Some more Timenotes in your Videos would be nice. No Idea how long it took you to do that setup. Semmed pretty quick though.
@@jfrohne I can get everything set up in around an hour +/- with this band as far as time goes. The PA tune is an often debated subject with my videos. The trick with people in the room is to listen to music very softly so you can get an idea of where frequencies in the room are at. Next I stand with my back to the PA with a flat channel EQ and flat PA EQ’s and make clicking sounds with my mouth. This excites the higher frequencies in the room. It’s the same as the “teeth” part of “two” when saying “check one two”. The “squirrel noises” are a little less distracting than saying “check two”. That lets you get the ringy/squealing/howling noises in check with steep narrow notches. The music portion will let you make the speakers sound “flat” ish. Then dial in your vocal sound at the channel level. We very rarely ever get a real sound check. The first time I hear the PA is the vibe set followed by introductions followed by the first dance. The first time I hear the full band with a quiet room is the first dance which is a great way to get fast as solving problems!
@@billylaguardia wow, one Hour is quick. A similar setup usually takes me 2-3 hours. The „squirrel Noise“ is a great Idea. I sometimes do a „whistle sweep“ a little like smaart to excite all the Frequencies. That pretty distracting for others though. Thanks for your in-Depth Answer btw
Loved Jon in Steel Train -- glad to see he's still rippin!
Jon is the man. Truly one of my favorite drummers. Can confirm, he is still rippin!
Billy I’ve been watching your videos and trying to introduce your settings to my band, thanks for sharing these gigs we could learn a lot
Awww thanks! There are a lot of people who really don’t like the way I do things. But I will say I’ve probably done 200 or so gigs with this band and the methods used work. They have to play a variety of rooms that aren’t designed for music. It’s always a challenge acoustically: big boomy rooms where the band needs to remain around 95db. To add to the complexity, people generally will give speeches in front of the PA. You can dial the EQ back a bit once you are in a music venue, but the methods hold true regardless of venue.
@@billylaguardia one more question, how did you convinced those bands and players to switched from having amps to completely digital and go direct to the house? I would surely show these videos to them and have them see these band settings. Thanks again for sharing
@@hsa579 you can ask as many question as ya like! The “no amps” was a dictate from the band owners to make sure stage volume is as low as possible. It’s been that way since day one with this band. As a mixer, it’s a dream. No one really seems to mind as long as their IEM mixes are good. I hate amps on stage. They look cool. But they really muddy things up on stage in the wrong musicians hands.
I completely agree, I will send this video to them, let them watch and see if they would agree with me,, thanks again
@@hsa579 the amp modelers win based on the stereo outputs alone. The guitar players can have those sweet ping pong delays! “Lush” choruses. “Dense” reverbs. Etc…

Howdy! I guess it's been a while. I have a setup working with a 1248, Stage-B16, and StudioLive 32SC. Everything is smooth in terms of their communication. The StudioLive was a later addition that we hope to use to mix live shows, since the original AVB setup was just for recording. My question is, is there any way to control the preamps on the Stage-B16 from the StudioLive? Of all the MOTU devices, the B16 is the only one without front-panel control of such things, and the recording booth with the 1248 and computer is a few flights of stairs away from the mixer location. I guess i can try the tablet apps, but am wondering (wishing, really) if there's any way the PreSonus can control it the way it can a Presonus AVB stagebox.
Links for the parts please - especially the bus bars.
It would be dope if it had meters on there for each leg
I just picked up an ART945a and it wouldn’t power up at all gig smh I’m about to try this out now. Wish me luck lol
This is exactly how to NOT tune a room! You're applying a LOT of unnecessary EQ, you're the example of someone who EQ with their EYES instead of their EARS! You're also ruining the PHASE response! 🤣
Did you watch the whole video? I showed the room, the speaker placement and 4 singers standing in front of the PA. I gave reasonable and logical explanations of why I was doing what I was doing. Assuming I did EQ with my eyes, wouldn't my EQ be flat to appease the comments section? I am not the singular authority on sound. However a wedding band with 12 people crammed into a corner in a country club with people singing and giving speeches in front of the PA requires different methods than a club, theater or arena show. If you have any suggestions that would help a room / set up like this sound better, I would love to hear them. In fact, I have 2 shows in 2 similar rooms this weekend. I will gladly employ any and all of your suggestions and credit you in the video.

If you are keeping the grounds separate, shouldn't you be using Hubbell IG5352? Otherwise the outlets will be grounded to the panel by the mounting screw.
They are separate…but not “that” separate.
@@billylaguardia I don't understand your design. By using normal outlets, the faceplate screws MAY connect their grounds together if the faceplate screws bite though the paint on the panel. With isolated ground outlets, the mounting strap and the faceplate screw are insulated from the protective earth connection, which would maintain the integrity of your isolated ground wires.
@@timothystockman7533 You are correct, however assuming that all grounds go back to the same buss bar in the panel/main distro we dont generally need to use iso outlets. That being said, we build everything per order. Happy to use iso outlets if a customer requests them. Most people dont want to spend the extra money for them just to isolate the outlet straps from the panel chassis. These Socapex distros are commonly used for lighting applications where ground loop noise is less of an issue than for audio.
What if you did have a crossover how would you go about that?
No LPF or HPF. EQ as needed.
I'm definitely not nearly the most experienced expert in this matter, but I do know how to make a show sound good. I'm actually newly enrolled in audio engineering school, so I'm looking forward to what I have to learn. But yes, recently somewhere on social media, I mentioned that I have a separate eq for my subs, and a guy went at me, swearing that you cannot eq subs, and there is no reason to have them on a separate feed from the mains. I didn't have the breakdown that you gave (and I generally just don't go back and forth on the internet), but I just said that I do what makes the system sound good in the room that I'm in.
You absolutely can (and should) EQ your subs. I I was a guest at a wedding with 800 people tonight. The band had a Martin rig with a QL5. The double 18 subs sounded awful. A steeper LPF and a couple of dips would have tightened everything up. Hugely expensive rig that sounded terrible. Feedback the whole night. Perhaps an EQ that didn’t “look great” may have solved the problems….
@@billylaguardia That's the other part of it too. A lot of folks think that all they need to do is spend a lot of money on a rig, and make it go really loud. Meanwhile, someone else spends 1/4th that amount, and knows how to eq and place their speakers properly (not even getting into dynamics and effects), and can sound WAY better.
I commented on the last video you were talking about, probably gotten buried. Grab an OREI EARC to rca converter from there you’ll get your line out to feed a drive rack. Then powered monitors and subs and you’re off to the races.
Extracting the audio isn’t the issue. My problem is that I need the TV’s remote to attenuate the volume of the system. The extractors only give you the full volume PCM audio. The TV can not attenuate the PCM audio which is the problem. The Sonos AMP and Bar read the IR signal from the TV’s remote and attenuate the volume.
@@billylaguardia volume control is dome via CEC. And not via copying the ir signal. Look into the tv’s settings and make sure that it’s on. Each OEM has their own name for CEC. With the OREI box that I’m telling you it can be done. I have it with my LG C3 via EARC and you can control the volume with it. We deploy this all the time. The Orei box will appear as a visio sound bar that can do atmos. With the Orei box you can get rid of the sonos amp and go straight to the driverack and to studio mons and subs. Like what you always do. You’ve been missing out on EARC and CEC. With my explanation to the older video the problem with CEC is sometimes decides it won’t work anymore. But with my LG C3 it does work. I even have an older LG tv coincidentally that I control the volume from my apple tv because of CEC. Below is a list of CEC names from OEM’s. Hey mate. Check out MDPC cable sleeving from Germany. I just built a monitor split with it. It works great but the cool thing is they make it in some awesome colours. Go full cable nerd with that :p
Unless something has changed very recently with Motu, Presonus AVB does NOT talk to Motu AVB. Motu is very good, but it also very proprietary. It is a closed ecosystem. I actually have both as the Motu AVB is a much smaller footprint for my solo electronic percussion rig. It works awesome. When I gig with my complete acoustic percussion rig where I have 10-15 inputs I use my 24R. When I gig with my dance band, we have a 32SC and my 24R becomes a stage box with a single RJ45 connection. Other than the size, I love the flexibility that Presonus brings.
AVB protocol is designed to work between manufacturers. MOTU and Presonus play nicely together. I have a few videos on this topic. Here is one as an example: czcams.com/video/ybluc8VhiYY/video.html
First time using this connecter (or making a cable for that matter) and your video explained it perfectly. My solder joints are pretty rough compared to yours, but it got the job done! Thank you!

Hi Billy, system processors are usually the best approach to tuning any speaker system. Their DSP is dedicated to the task, often the presets are carefully calculated by the various manufacturers. However, in lieu of these, the M-32's matrix outputs can do a decent job. In any case, tune and mix with your ears and not your eyes.
Hey Bill. Thanks for the comment. I totally agree. I would prefer to have a system processor. I used to carry one to every gig, I just found for this band, I could achieve similar results with the console’s matrix eq. Again, you don’t get as steep of filters or delay, but its fine for what the gigs are. The videos that cause the most comment section ire are a stick PA with a 12pc wedding band shoved in a country club. In that case, you gotta do what you gotta do. I agree with using your ears. I think if any commenters saw what a Pultec boost curve actually looked like - they’d faint!

Hi! CZcams comments section here! It looks like that switchcraft cable is a male-male. Doesn’t that present issues when the customer is trying to plug their male ended cable into it?
Haha! I look forward to actual comments and conversations! This is a male/female cable. The connector is female and the cable end is male.
I found an OREI earc to analog converter to work but it's very finicky. one guy on the comment here is correct in saying the consumer world uses CEC to control the volume up/down turn tv on/off etc. Make sure the TV's CEC is on. Each brand has their own name for it. But the problem with CEC is that every manufacturer has their own flavor to it. Which is very annoying. And sometimes CEC will be solid for a while then if you look at it wrong it'll stop working. I have an LG C3 bought brand new and bought half a dozen earc converter I can find on amazon and the OREI one is the most solid and even at that it will fail me from time to time. It's CEC and it's implementation, for now there's no getting around it's short comings. Go look up digital trends here on YT he has a vast knowledge on consumer devices.

Thanks so much for making this video! Thanks so much for the quick reply and the link! I use a vice which works well. Still just curious no matter what one uses, can the slight movement when one is holding the wire to let it cool possibly cause a cold solder joint? Thanks!
@@billguitarvin Depending on what you are soldering - try to use more solder. I try to use as much as possible. If the wire moves a little it will be more forgiving since its completely enveloped. Using the XLR connector in the video as an example, all the cups were as filled as they could be. Helping hands are useful as you can hold the wire in place with the helping hands. The problem with doing it bare handed is that the wire heats up. I solder by hand every day, so my hands are used to the heat so I dont have to use the helping hands in this way.
Once again, thanks Billy for the quick reply! Thanks too for the tip about filling the soldering cup with solder so if the wire wiggles a bit, the joint will be more forgiving. Also thanks for the helpful tip to have one helping hand hold the wire and another helping hand hold the XLR, eliminating the need to have one hand holding the wire. I’ve wondered how people can hold the wire while soldering because, like you mentioned, that wire gets hot. Ouch! Thanks for answering that as well. All the best to you and take care!
