  • Hey Friends! An often debated subject: the system tune song. Ben and I were working on an install and the subject came up. I figured it was a good opportunity to make a Shop Talk episode.

I start off with time alignment and pink noise, then 1-2 sweeps down front, center and rear. I tend to remove some 100-200 hz, a bit of 350 and on the top boxes of a line array I usually do a shelf to get rid of 10+khz screechy ness. It can get harsh further away, could carry more measurement mics, but I dont feel like having hundreds of feet of XLR for a single purpose.
Then usually play these sounds while walking around a given venue.
Jack of Speed - Steely Dan
Rip & Tear - Mick Gordon
Before - Neelix (Just because its awesome on big PA)
    Hey Now - London Grammar
After that, I usually go back to your videos and complain about too much EQ.

    I have a few tracks I gravitate towards;
    When I'm Alone - Lissie
    Reflect - Neelix
    No Diggity - Chet Faker
    Everywhere - Fleetwood Mac
I have a playlist of test tracks that I pick from depending on the genre of the bands that are performing. I do a lot of multi-band shows, and usually engineer for all of the bands, which means it I can be mixing multiple genres, so I mix up my test tracks.

    I have 4 “go-to’s”
    1. Arctic Monkeys - Arabella (overall drum kit sound)
    2. Deadmau5 - closer (low end lobing)
    3. Steely Dan - Babylon Sisters/Jenny don’t lose that number (PA imaging and mids)
    4. Michael Jackson - Jam (pa attack and decay)
If there’s more time, Florence & the machine - various
    Alt-J - tessellate
    Royal Blood - Royal Blood
    Hermitude - various
Billy Eilish - bad guy, if the vocals are “clear” I’ve done my job.

The best system tune song is the one you know the best. Im not sure why, but I always play "Midnight City" by M83. I lean towards mixers and engineers that I trust, so anything mixed by Chris Greely.

Speaking of Bruce Hornsby, his album "Harbor Lights" is just amazing. And while 3EB's first album is great, their second album "Blue" is super underrated.

Does it sound like the smooth dulcet tones of Bruce Hornsby? Cause it should.
