£6 MILLION To Future Proof?
As we move into our new depot and plan for the future Ashville Yard, we are weighing up train offload options: 60 Tonne Material Handler Vs Bottom Discharge System.
Our current system works, but will it hamper our future growth?
Daniel breaks down how they work, what they cost, plus the benefits and limitations of both.

What about a conveyor belt system or radial stacker that the lh60 feeds into so you're not double handling the product?

  • @unytarywharf689

Build the new machine. Why? 1. If you can break even with this machine with the loan and interest within 45 years, you made five years profits. 2. If a new company wants to buy the land that you have right now (New land) the value of the land is then higher than before, even though you have a leasing contract, you can sell the machine to the owner of the land and make money off it if you don’t stay there 50 years 3: Be able to grow your income in the business by bringing more staff, more projects and more trains which reduce your freedom time of the machine money wise. 4: your building a safer offloading system for the people all around offloading the train. And if the machine is broken, you can still unload as usual with the current set up with trucks and other vehicles.

The new yard will be to small in 10 to 15 years so it doesn’t make sense to put a under ground system in place where you don’t own out right. That money has to be put away for the next site that’s fully owned and twice the size

Personally id go for a bigger liebherr lh 120 /150 with a rail gantry unload even quicker keep the lh60 for backup/ duel unload because you have already said the fine for late trains can run in to the thousands then put a hopper and conveyor system that runs along the back of the bays and drops it in the chosen bays

6 million pound to gain one MAYBE two more trains a day? Money is super expensive at the moment, will the daily overhead savings even outweigh the interest expense on that 6m? It's 40 grand a month on something that makes no money. I don't think the improvements are nearly worth it. I think there are far better uses for that money [sic. opportunity cost]. If it were 3-4 million pound and you were able to unload as much as a solid 6 trains a day? Maybe then. I think there the numbers make more sense. But until then, you can just get another digger if you need more throughput. Which can more easily scale to real demand. With the full system, you the less you use it, the more wasteful it is. Imagine spending the money on the throughput and then not using it. Maybe a compromise is spend a couple pound today, install the groundwork infrastructure. Stuff that's hard to do later. And then wait until the diggers no longer make sense to use, THEN invest in the system.

The pros and cons have been laid out. I can't make that decision easily, but a tried and true system that's already in place means that if a bottleneck appears, it'll be that in the long run. But a new system, new overheads, new employees, new training, and potentially new customers would also be the way to go. You either will make your company a pioneer in the industry, or run the risk of stagnation and profit-loss. The price of fuels alone are projected to go up, but the prices of electricity very rarely fluctuate greatly. I'd say bite the bullet and go for the new material handler.

LH60 into a hopper that feeds conveyors. LH60 doesn't have to move and you don't have other plant having to shift the loads. Existing training on the LH60, existing maintenance known on conveyors, less plant moving around site, no underground digging/construction. Either that or existing setup but with an extra LH60. Just offload it quicker!

  • @utilitarian

For me the main consideration would be offsetting the £6m+interest over twenty years, vs maintenance and replacement of machines over the same period. It's going to be less with the latter option, but it brings more headaches. Also the front loader always seems to have a fault.

  • @David-mr3gw

  • @gamersforthewin9498

Simple cost/benefit analysis. Find out how much time/material is moved currently, and set it up with what the proposal can do. Then find out how much time has to be spend using the 'new solution' for it to become profitable over the current setup. If the time it takes is over the amount that mgmt. believes it should/ want they want it to take, then its a no go, if mgmt is good with the time frame then do so. Remember to include operations cost for the machines + Service&maintenance.

How about keeping the LH60 but adding a movable hopper with conveyor belt to negate the need for the loader, The lh60 can load direct from the train into the hopper, the conveyor can drop the material directly into the correct bay.

  • @seancooper5507
    @seancooper5507 Před 12 hodinami

You have the men and the expertise to make the main building that is required, you’re going to need maintenance men, of which some could be welder fabricators, so all the support structures could be built in house. And they will have other work. Then you have the people you already had, to build your conveyor systems you will need. You going to have to call in contractors to do the main power supplies anyway, so the power needed for the discharge system can also can go into place early as well. So when you sit down and think really hard about the whole system, most of it you can do yourselves.
