The Zenith ZF-56 - The Unholy Lovechild Of An AR & An HK33

- Today Luke C @BallisticAviation is back on the SHOT Show 2024 floor with Zenith Firearms to talk about their wild roller delayed rifle, the ZF-56. This new rifle combines a lot of the handling characteristics and features of the much-loved AR-15 platform and combines it with the theoretically more robust roller-delayed blowback system. The ZF-56 will be available in both 5.56 and .300 blackout upon initial launch, and of course, that means that the ZF-56 will be compatible with all standard AR magazines.

@@GoldenEagleXTND This rifle is an AR like how a crocodile is a lizard.
It's cool, but it's not $2500 cool
For real
First comment I see and I'm like nope before I even watched lol
The only other industry that's as bad as gun manufacturers is the ergonomic chair industry, though the ergo chair industry is worse since their chairs are even more expensive than a gun that can you know, withstand constant miniature explosions.
The industry is getting to the point of the AR bubble that burts years ago AGAIN. Trying to wring as much money from a customer base while they can.
There will be plenty of suckers who will buy these and continue to indicate that consoomers will slurp up their slop to CONSOOM
Id pay $2k for an HK33 variant. This? No. Not this.
As a huge fan of the HK slap, I'm excited to try the Zenith "uppercut" 👀
Ok that was good
i tried it, it did not work so wel lol
It's a Zenith crotch slap 😂😂😂
"We wanted to make something new"... Heckler & Koch gave the world the G41 in 1979, with the small difference that it was made out of stamped steel instead of milled aluminium.
It has the last round bolt hold open now! Innovation.
@@JinKee The original G41 also offered a last round bolt hold open too.
MAC might like this better, he bent the receiver on one of his full auto HKs fairly effortlessly.
Everyone at shot show thinks they still could charge covid prices, no we don’t want a $999 .22 scorpion and we don’t want this for that price 😂
Roller delayed only has reduced recoil when compared to direct blowback systems. The AR is not direct blowback, they have a delayed system using gas,, so there is no recoil reduction benefit in going to roller delayed for this. Sweet Jesus Zenith.
The MPX even has less recoil than the MP5, if only by a little bit.
First thing i said when i saw this video.
Cool story bro but I have both and hk93 has lower recoil than a ar15
Did you expect the clone company guys to be fantastic innovators? They're doing the best that they can, okay!
Cool story bro, I don’t believe you. Or your AR is way overgassed and under-sprung, or the HK93 weighs more than your AR. Weight is a huge factor in felt recoil. My CETME was no softer recoiling than my AR10. Same same,.
A rifle that no HK person(which is Zenith’s main customer) wanted. Give us an actual HK33. If I wanted an AR, I have one and can buy a really great one for half what you’re asking for this.
For real. Why does nobody make a true HK33 clone. It would fly off the shelves. Nobody wants this or PTR’s STANAG mag abomination
@@shawnbillingsley991for real. Like, read the fucking room. People are sick of AR’s. That’s why they want MP5’s and the like in the first place. Something different. Not this same old generic shit.
@@jonbeck5945 Nothing beats the AR. Cry lol.
@@railfanningpoints2.045maybe. But it’s fucking boring.
@jonbeck5945 Borning reliability and modularity is great. Nothing beats the AR. Then again, I'm not a gun collector who needs a new range toy every month.
Cameraman lingering on that 6-8 trigger pull weight like a champ, lol
Are companies doing this for first time owners so they won’t have an ND?
My SIG M400 was the same way. Much better with a LaRue trigger.
@@roundrock63 I have two stock mil-spec CMMG triggers that break well under 6 lbs. This is more of a lazy finishing final product issue to me..
@roundrock63 Mostly. Blame the lawyers. No new design hits the market anymore that doesn’t have them involved, domestically anyway.
Should have spent all that R&D money into just importing the HK33/HK53 clones.
Um, roller delay guns actually tend to have more recoil than their locked breech cousins, they are harder to clean because there is usually excess gas venting into the receiver, and they don't suppress well. Unless you swap the "locking" shoulders out for more aggressive ones to further delay the opening. It's not the reliability that's an issue, its the gun battering itself from the higher bolt velocity and the excess gas. So $2500, for some Shot Show rep to lie to me about the benefits of this rifle. He really should have talked about the robust qualities of the action. The durability, the the ability to work through dirt debris and carbon build up, the reduced necessity of maintenance. Those are the real strengths of the roller delayed system, not whatever this guy was peddling.
Also two missed opportunities, pic rail rear for folding stocks. That's half the fun of having a self contained recoil spring in the receiver. Plus the option to swap sides on the charging handle. Lefties are going to hate that design if they cannot change the side of the charging handle. You still have to use it to clear any malfunction, dud rounds, etc.
Theres a reason HK could never get a full-sized rifle squared away with a roller delayed system. It works great for sub guns, but with rifle calibers not so much (machine guns yes, rifles no)
@@John_Redcorn_ Uhhhh..... The G3........
@@John_Redcorn_ please tell me you're not a mechanical engineer without saying you are not.
@@bintjbeil7892 dont need to be: i can read. The info is out there
Actually the ar is a terrible suppressor host due to gas blow back into your face. Recoil is really a shooters perception when it comes to most modern firearms rollers delays included if you put a spur stock on this it will have the same recoil as a ar with almost no gas in the face that (reliable) ar 15s do while suppressed there is no way around it. Now the piston driven systems have problems with port pop meaning that if you have piston ar you can’t make it quite because of the gas bleed off. A great example of this issue it the Ak 47 and aug. also there is a Goldie locks zone where you can build the action to handle suppressed and none suppressed in roller delays hopefully they found out for that price.
I wanna hear Hop’s take!
i can’t think of a good reason why anyone would prefer this over an HK33 clone
Looks good except that front rail is gigantic
My Wallet saw that 👁️👄👁️💪
Should have made it work with Ar lowers
I mean it's interesting, but it really should've been brought to shot show with a 19-13 rail on it with a folding stock, like why have the buffer tube on the gun if it doesn't need it?
Would be far more interesting if it was an upper that just slapped onto an AR lower since nobody wants to pay $300 for an okay/decent HK trigger to go in their $2500 gun that has an 8lb pull from factory.
All when you can buy a $80 2 stage PSA trigger and have something better than a $300 HK trigger upgrade.
When will companies just give us an HK93 and maybe a more modern re-visioning that uses AR triggers, mags and has a bolt release? It shouldn't be that difficult.
they should have put the charging handle on the side of the receiver, the big issue with the hk platform is it getting in the way of mounting stuff
for some reason no one designing these types of charging handles seems to realize that, its annoying. at least they could have angled a bit more downwards and not literally touching the top rail smh
@@joemama.556 They don't care because it's being sold to people for "huehuehue HK slap".
Like The FAL or XCR
I don't get why they went throught the trouble of setting up the charging handle to lock down rather than up but made it big enough to interfere with anything mounted on the front of the top rail.
I don't know for certain, but the HK roller delayed system for the rifle calibers have a lot of friction to overcome, so they typically have a bit of primary extraction before the action goes back. Even with that, I've found racking an HK91 to be way more difficult than an FAL. It's a design quirk that I don't think they can get around.
...but yeah, the slap though!
At this price do you have to start thinking MCX or SCAR-16 as foldy boy stock competitors. Tough place to be.
The answer to a question that nobody has asked. People who want an HK33 that takes AR magazines will simply wait for PTR's clone.
The PTR looks thinner, shorter with a collapsible stock, and lighter. Seems like the best choice in my opinion.
@@Chewee394 I agree. My only complaint is, due to the fact that it is a clone correct gun, the mag release is a bit too far from the trigger so some people might have to break their grip to eject the magazine.
literally my dream rifle tf you talking about
@@p1o328 I don't believe you exist at all. For all I know you could be a figment of my imagination since I didn't take my pills today.
Very interesting and cool but I am not too sure if I believe the claims about the recoil.
I own an original converted HK33 and it's has a very heavy bolt carrier and a pretty violent action. It's reliable and durable but it definitely has a comparatively heavy prolonged recoil impulse.
But I also know that you can improve the recoil of roller delayed guns by changing the angle of the locking surfaces, so maybe that's what's going on.
With a good buffer this thing probably a excellent surpressor host.
This is $1,200 cool.
Exactly!! Definitely not worth 2 Psa jakls imo
@@mpjake7485 Just buy 2 PSA Jakls instead! In two different configurations. XD
That's cool but heavy and expensive... These companies need to stop thinking a rifle is worth 2500-4000.
Fellow gun enthusiasts need to stop giving these greedy companies money with 50-60% profit margins trying to make back r&d money in 6 months
Proprietary lower will kill this. Put it on a standard ar lower or a brn180 or mcx type lower.
@@kyotra its roller delayed. It would definitely work.
@@ShadySummerZ Nevermind, I was thinking of another gun.
No idea why you think a proprietary lower will "kill it" though. The entire market doesn't revolve around the AR-15.
@@kyotra No one wants to kiss AFT a** to borrow a 4473'ed firearm. By streamlining uppers with the AR lower, we maintain freedom and continue the 2nd by pushing the 80% world forward.
Thanks.
😣that price tho… I’m still holding out hope for the PTR 63.
Upper receiver looks higher than AR so they should have a higher butt stock. The handguard without any accessories looks thick as hell also. Will it take AR drop in triggers ?
Sorry it's no way roller delay will recoil softer than low mass bcg+buffer tuned AR.
I appreciate the vibe of this design. Looks both functional and drippy.
I always wanted to make an MP5 (exact) clone upper (9mm) that would pin to a AR9 lower...hey Z think on that one..
Yeahhh that’s pretty cool
Will it take a Geiselle trigger?
Can't wait to see this in a video game in a few years
I’ll get the PTR-63 instead, thanks.
Not sure what their relationship with MKE is currently. But a version of the MPT-76 would be worth the $2500 to me, that thing not so much.
"It's the best of both worlds!"- Hanna Montana
I have plenty of ars in 30865 creedmoor 223 and 300 blackout. With that being said I might have to pick one of these up in 300 black it's kind of a toss-up for me if I do either the pistol or if I do the rifle
300blk roller lock makes for an interesting subsonic suppressor host. Would be super cool if it has a SD style ported barrel and bufferless can.
6.5 Grendel with a Six8 magwell.
Six8 magazines can fit and feed 29 rounds fine.
Also pmags that normally aren't available in Grendel.
This would be sick in Grendel.
Wait, they screwed up big time! Why would you put the charging handle grove at the bottom and not the top? So you can't even HK slap this thing unless you turn it upside down.
Is the lower polymer?🙁
No folding stock?
But can you slap the charging handle?
Nice stuff!
Why would a company waste it's time and money developing this? Even at $2500 I imagine they'll have to sell a few thousand to break even...
Damnit!! Take my MONEY!!!
Still waiting on a 33/93
No gas system, but somehow has a handguard that looks larger than the one on the Sig Spear, is kinda impressive.
Luke Luke Luke!!!
Its Look See
Yes please
Id be interested in a 9mm and 10mm model
People are complainging about this proce but frankly i think its fair...🤷 i mean by the time you actually build the exact ar you want itle be close to 1200 t0 1500...add some man hours afor new machining and you got this bad boy...
Just make a damn HK 33! I want a 33!
What red dot is that on the rifle
Either a Trijicon Rx01 or the Meprolight copy.
Zenith could make a pocket protector and they'd charge 1800$ for it.
"How big do you want the rifle to be?"
"Yes."
It’s not THAT big. The price however…
I'm imagining military and law enforcement applications.
Its interesting but looking at their own pictures closeup, it is also concerning. We won't see a teardown and hear the downsides/problems until they are in reviewer/owner hands.
If I can't mate it with an 80% lower, I'm out.
Frankly this should also be a 762 x39 ...
They act like it's unique as though the CETME-L isn't a thing lmao
Is that a standard AR lower? Hopin so, prayin so, tell me it is.
It’s not, it’s said in the video that it’s their own lower
@@Nerfboy-NEO Ah, man, damn--I don't how I missed that. Thanks for setting that straight.
Always thought it was so ridiculous that HKs didn't have last round hold open.
An SD would be have easier to make and an easier sell
Drop that to $1,700 and I'd probably buy it. $2,500 competes with too many things.
Well he said it’s like MP5, that definitely justifies 2500$ 🤷🏼♂️
It's not an AR, it's not an MP5, it's a mysterious third thing...
300 BO would be awesome with a roller delayed system. Will be keeping my eyes on this. Would be sweet if it took standard AR triggers...
It's a Hk G41 AR15 lovechild....

Well that has to be the coolest thing I've seen from this SHOT. $2,500 though kills it for me.
This is the gun in a space warfare game that doesnt have the rights for the weapons. Wtf. We just want an hk33 clone.
I read the comment of $2,500, before the video...... I never watched after that.
Too expensive!

Roller delayed lighter recoil than a DI rifle? Yeeeah i think not
10mm( eyebrows raise)
👍👍👍⚡⚡⚡🇨🇷🔥🔥🔥
It’s a cool concept but I don’t like the charging handle being in the way of mounting things up front on the end of the pic rail and even the side. Also 2500 bucks? I think I’ll pass.
Um
Didn't 5.56 not function well in roller delayed systems?
Nah, it’s reliable in the hk 33 series. The stanag prototype had issues in the 60s but the original ar mags were problematic for everyone.
@@AppliedGats gotcha, thanks for clarifying
Why do gun manufacturers think that consumers have a great deal of interest in rifles more bulbous than an AR? Hmmm.
They need to get some real gun ppl working on this. Could be cool, but it aint there yet.

Wasn't there a company called Zenith who made television back in 70 and 80s 😅😅😅 I know there completely different company's but still

Honestly I think this is a bigger miss than the PTR 63. If I want an AR, I’ll buy an AR. If I want an HK Roller Delay, I’ll buy an HK Roller Delay. Literally no one is manufacturing a proper new production HK-33, and I want one, especially chambered in 300 Blackout.
The price is too damn high. It sucks to see a good company that will eventually go bankrupt because of their prices.
Way too high!!
Cool gun. Very uncool price. Nope.

Doesn't that make it a g43 that no one wants....
I suspect if they made a hk33 it would sell more than this...
I don't know, seems like a bit of a downgrade from the ZF-1.
Was cool of Zenith to make something no one at all wanted or asked for. I will be quite surprised if this is anything other than a colossal failure.
