How Accurate is the No-Recoil Vulcan from Olympus Arms?

- Montana-based Olympus Arms returns to SHOT Show’s Industry Day at the Range with their Vulcan rifle. James saw it last year and made a very popular video about it, but there are some changes that have been made and also, James wanted to know about the accuracy of this platform.
The company has been busy refining the design of the weapon and has decided to bring the bulk of its parts manufacturing in-house, making a significant investment in new machine tools. Described as a ‘recoilless rifle’, the Vulcan was originally developed as an offering for the US Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon program, where it was submitted under the name MARS. The Vulcan features a 16-inch barrel with a muzzle brake but can be run suppressed. The rifle has a pair of non-reciprocating charging handles on either side of the forend that complements its ambidextrous controls. The upper receiver of the Vulcan features a full-length top rail or the buyer has the option for a C-Grip Plus Rail with a break in the Picatinny to allow users to C-clamp. Uniquely, unlike an AR, the upper has a clamshell design for disassembly which adds to its intriguing propositions. The lower receiver’s controls and layout will be instantly familiar to anyone who has used an AR-pattern rifle, however, there is not rear charging handle or rear take down pin. The Vulcan uses a long recoil operating system, where the rifle’s barrel reciprocates the full length of the action, effectively absorbing the 7.62x51mm round’s recoil. This unique design has lent the Vulcan a very intriguing characteristic; Olympus Arms suggests that the rifle has around the same felt recoil impulse as an AR-15, thereby ensuring improved follow-up shot accuracy. While the blast from the muzzlebrake was significant the felt recoil was minimal, especially when firing from a bipod. Maintaining a sight picture downrange was easy. With regard to its weight, the Vulcan comes in at 8.5lb.

I dont care if it works, slow-motion footage of long recoil operation looks sick as fuck
I would expect a quarter of the recoil impulse with slightly decreased durability.
True dat!
Real
Hi guys, thanks for tuning in to Forgotten Weapons. I'm Ian McCollum...
😂
ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For the MSRP, he left out used cars when he said what they are competing with😂
xD
I should be able to trade in my Honda for one rifle if they plan on charging this much.
They should work with CarMax so you know what you can get if you sell your truck and buy this gun.
its just marketing and good sales strategy:
Provide the lastest and greatest tech when it is widely unavailable, charge more than you think you can/should for your product, then drop the price 15-35% when those features become less exclusive.
$6,700 > $6.5-4.5 range - which then looks like a GREAT deal compaired to 6.7.
Think buying a new iphone vs a previous gen device for example, its all about how much hype is surrounding the new features.
This happens almost anytime someone produces a product whos features are individually unique or where the specific configuration of features in the device - they can and should tax for being the first to risk doing something, then lower tags later backed by a stronger market.
The cool thing about these kinds of companies is that it shows that there is an intrest. And then PSA will make it for $1,500.
😂😂😂 I hope so!
They cant because it is patented.
@@johnwickfriends2876Patents expire… Gen 3 Glocks were once patented and now we have the Dagger. Give it time
@johnwickfriends2876 so was the glock, so was the ar-15. It is just a mater of time.
@@johnwickfriends2876 long recoil is not a patented technology
The price is insulting. What I find even more insulting, is him saying "It's more accurate than a fixed barrel". We all know this isn't true. Don't insult our intelligence.
It certainly would be in fast-firing / fast-follow up conditions. When the rifle doesn't kick or move off target hardly, you can just belt out rounds
NOT more accurate than a fixed , tuned, hand load rifle. But the German 88mm proved the recipe barrel accuracy in a huge version of this type. It's is interesting for wealthy leisure geezers to play with
Lol imagine getting offended over the price of a product you don’t have to buy. Snowflake.
@@motakai3898 controllability=/=accuracy
I'm sure that it's more accurate ...under very specific circumstances, such as at odd positions and at a high rate of fire.
It's technically correct, which is the best kind of correct.
There is an awful lot of recoil for "recoilless", plus the pricing is insane. And "precision rifle" for a 2moa gun? Haha, no.
Lol, anybody else remember the LWRC SMG45 reciprocating barrel desaster? That thing was also 3 grand...
Exactly what I thought. Those POS guns were shooting something like 25 MOA. Legitimately dangerous levels of inaccuracy.
"It's all next-gen tech." The materials are certainly modern as it gets, but let's not forget the ultimate principle at play here - that of long-recoil - was patented 125 years ago! #johnbrowninglives
I was gonna say this would be ground breaking in 1923
John Browning made this in a cave! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!
If they're chambering that in .277, then I know enough to know that this Uber expensive rifle is only going to hold that 1.5MOA for about 2000 rounds. What a waste.
They aren't pretending to have invented long recoil... what I suppose he really meant was "its remarkably plain on the inside, but its all proprietary on the inside"
So… 6700$ for a 1.5 moa gun. Riiiiigggggghhhhhht…..
I'll be surprised if it's even that accurate using a reasonable standard of what is considered 1.5 moa.
$6700.00 - WTF!
yep no thanks. im too poor to shoot 308 as it is.
James had no words when he heard that 😂
Right but obviously it’s not really meant for Joe range shooter. Try to imagine who exactly would really need fast follow up 308 shots . Sounds like something most useful in a tactical situation so we are talking about organizations buying it not individuals.
A semester of my son’s University expenses, or a penis barrel .308? I already have a reliable, non penis .308. I’m good. Anyone else considering the penis barrel at that price point?🤔
I came straight to the comments when I heard that number.. love that he followed up by saying it competes with the SR25 and Spear as if that somehow justified the price.
Somebody get this mans a Websters so he understands what monolithic means lol
I gotchu. It means one continuous piece
Which means James used the word correctly. Maybe 2b needs the dictionary.
@@wstavis3135
I don't think OP was referring to James.
Man it’s a good thing he gave the price at the very end of the video! 😂
I don't think you can call long recoil next gen when JMB and Paul Mauser both dicked around with it. And talk about snake oil claiming a moving barrel is gonna be more accurate than fixed. Why on earth wouldn't bench rest guns have sliding recoil reduction mechanisms then? Should've called Ian over to get the Forgotten Weapons video out of the way now instead of trying to find one in 10 years
Yeah its a hard nope for me just because of all the "sales" bs. And having handled both long and short recoil operated rifles with moving barrels, they are not accurate.. at all. probably a 2.5-3 minute gun which for most is fine, but you can get a highly tunes competition ar-10 from the likes of JP or similar for less, which really have no recoil either...
"... your accuracy is actually better with a moving barrel than it is with a fixed barrel"
Press X to doubt
$6795 and competing with the $4500 Spear. Im going to keep my Spear order thanks lol.
The spear is shit though
So you'll keep an overpriced AR10? Cool.
@@heyhayhay247 no buffer tube and I dont have to use a shitty T handle? Those 2 things are worth it alone.
@@ShadySummerZ You hardly ever have to use the T handle on a regular AR. The problem isn't having the handle, the problem is having holes and crevices near your face where gas can leak from when using a suppressor.
The spear weighs a lot for no good reason, and it doesn't have a stellar track record either.
Greasy little siglets will cope with their bargain bin products even if presented with a better option for less money, so this comment really means very little
long recoil goes hard
Long stroke recoil
It looks cool so it’ll appear in a few movies before eventually ending up on Forgotten Weapons.
There so much recoil tho it’s visually apparent idk what theyre lying for, just sell it for what it is, a cool concept
Doesn’t look like lower recoil to me, looks like HIGHER recoil at lower speed. I guess it will feel less snappy and more pleasing to shoot but I am not convinced that it will improve the speed of re acquiring the target after the first shot. This works basically like a well tuned Chauchat automatic rifle and everyone I heard talking about firing them commented about how hard they are to keep on target with sustained fire. I guess having a giant compensator at the end helps a lot as well
Exactly
Can't cheat physics. You've got to throw a given amount of lead out the front at a given speed. This will spread an equal amount of energy out over a longer period of time resulting in lower peak force.
I have a Remmington 11 and 81 Woodmaster in 12ga an .300 Savage. Long Recoil doesn't make either "recoilless", it just spreads the energy over a longer span of time.
Same reason a heavier gun will kick less; it's more inertia for the recoil impulse to overcome. You can't cheat physics, all that energy (save for a tiny fraction turned into heat as the recoil spring compresses) goes into your shoulder eventually.
The only way to counteract recoil is to throw exhaust gasses somewhere else (e.g. muzzle brake or backblast), or to accelerate a mass in the opposite direction (AK-107).
I can build a volley-fire array of Yeet Cannons for $6,800. Company will sell off the design and/or the company itself to a bigger manufacturer down the road if they don't do something about that price tag.
4:40 is how many minutes I just wasted. Clever to have that at the end of the video 😂
Who wins: the snake oil salesman with a moving barrel or 1 muzzle brake?
My usual reaction to price: hmmm ok
My reaction to this price: GOOD LAWD
“The Vulcan comes in at 8.5lb. It carries an introductory Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $3,999; however, pricing will increase post SHOT Show to $6,795.”
It would be interesting to see it performing it Desert Brutality
And then moving on to its next stop at Forgotten Weapons.
I remember this from last year I like it nice to see they are still around.
for about a grand more you could get an m82
"All next gen tech..." Straight out of 1900s! If long recoil was so great, it would not have been abandoned to the annals of history.
"Abandoned to the annals of history" *laughs in M2 and M107A1*
Both of those guns are short recoil@@williamED15
@@williamED15 Those are short recoil operated. Basically, the barrel gives the bolt a slight shove to make it cycle.
This is LONG recoil operated, which means the entire system recoils back, before the barrel returns and the bolt chases after. The only other modern gun I can think of that does this is the Lynx, and it's a 2MOA anti-material rifle in .50 cal. (which is where that makes sense).
Yeah the only possible benefit I can see is the longer lock time making for excellent suppression.
@@williamED15 essentially, they turned the AR10 into a Chauchat!
Very cool, I have been thinking about something like this for 20 years.
It's lame when a long recoil design from the turn of the 20th century is one of the cooler guns at shot show
We need a laser rifle in the 40 watt range.
Gun designs have plateaued a long time ago.
@@baneofbanes We only hit the plateau on operating systems and locking systems. We are innovating in materials, optics, rails, furniture, ammunition, suppresors, precision, modularity...
@@thekraken1173 yah no shit. Thing is the operating systems is exactly what he’s talking about. This is a long recoil system, which as he said was developed in the early 1900’s.
It‘s obviously a very different kind of long-recoil.
It's a really cool gun but that price is honestly so crazy high I have a hard time even thinking of what to say about it.
We saw this last year didn’t we? Really cool idea.
I’m glad this gun was brought up again from last years shot show
When I first saw this I had to check the date to see if it actually was the video from last year.
I see it's got FULL ambi bolt control. Well done Olympus Arms!
they are coming to Montana!!!! Welcome...
My guy sitting here acting like muzzle brakes don't exist. For $180, you can get a Precision Armament Hypertap which will take 70% of that recoil away. Pair this with a Nemo XO and it becomes far more "recoiless" than this 125 y/o tech. You also get the added benefit of less shit moving around. Also, at nearly $7k, I see this being on Forgotten Weapons soon. Lastly, glad he upped the cost by about $3500k since it was unveiled last year.
Edit: If you're going to talk about MOA, post the results or shut the hell up.
i know close to nothing about guns but im curious as to the amount of bullet velocity that is being lost to pushing the barrel back compared to a mostly stationary shoulder. assuming it does give you better accuracy, wouldnt it be at the cost of range and power? because i feel like it would be kind of like doing a standing jump from a trampoline compared to solid ground. and if the trade off is accuracy for power, would it me more or less effective to just go to a lower caliber for less recoil?
a great neat very interesting and delicious video and rifleSegnor James.the rifle looks like it works like the Hungarian lynx and the German mg42.or the bofors gun.have a good one Mr James.is the rifle fine for the in shorts ccw Mr James?have a good one Mr James.keep these videos flowing.
_”Everything’s proprietary,”_ he says as if that’s a good thing.
hows the rate of fire as comparre to a normal .308?
do they cycle with a suppressor
As a full auto belt-fed there might be an advantage in keeping "tight" groups a few hundred yards out, but as a semi? For this price?
Exactly. It’s .308, not .50BMG.
I love how they are showing the same gun from last year because they showed it before it was ready
How accurate is it over distance? Didn't they show this last year?
Interested in 8.6
The shooter stays still. The receiver stays still. They should call it stilltine. That's gold, Jerry!
Heard they're considering making an upper that integrates with an AR15 lower so it'll feed intermediate cartridges.
now put a can on it and see if it works.
Yup, fatal flaw w/ long recoil designs.
Would a huxwrx/oss suppressor potentially work?
The video description says that it can be suppressed
A system like this should work fine even with a suppressor that creates more backpressure. Durability may be impacted by a backpressure creating suppressor. Not all suppressors create extra backpressure. OSS suppressors do not as far as I know.
Willing to bet it does tbh, and quieter than pistons and DI
3:30 well if its as modular as claimed here and will be able to handle 277 ( especially thehybrid 6.8x51) this would be quite the system
watching the footage of everyone shooting....it definitly recoils!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This thing give you +10% recoil
Common or Proprietary magazines??
Ignore the naysayers Michael.
I think what you are doing is truly innovative. Let the squares wallow inside their box. True ingenuity stems from those that think _outside_ the box.
_"In England, an inventor is regarded almost as a crazy man, and in too many instances, invention ends in disappointment and poverty. In America, an inventor is honoured, help is forthcoming, and the exercise of ingenuity, the application of science to the work of man, is there the shortest road to wealth."_ *~Oscar Wilde*
Stay classy my friend.
dude long recoil has been around for 125 years.
What happens if you fall forward on the barrel. Does it just compress and eject a round? What about malfunction clearing?
I mean cool, but questionable
I only watch for that sweet sweet outro music
For those complaining about cost, there's no way he would be able to make any profit selling this at $2k and would probably be losing a significant amount of money at that price. He has to go up in the price/quality because he can't cut costs because he's not at scale. It's actually really smart what he's doing by chambering this in more exotic calibers like .277fury because those shooters typically have more cash to spend or are military/LEO. He has to rely on that niche market/premium. If his business can survive he can eventually scale up and drop the price but I don't see that as realistic right now.
The people complaining about the price aren't doing so because they think the dude is greedy. They're doing so because what you're getting for that price is not at all worth it. Full power rifle rounds like 308, 6.5, and .277 are not so high recoiling that a system like this that also gives up accuracy is necessary. If this were an anti tank or elephant gun it would be a different story, but this thing has very little appeal as offered.
Yeah,! it needs to be Chambered in at least 300 win etc to be worth the design, and be beltfed to compete with things like the Ohio Ordnance REAPR, Sig Spear, HCAR, and Falkor Petra. Especially at the price. Hopefully someday, they can produce it more affordably, and have some cool calibers and Gucci models.
The moving barrel puts a whole new meaning on cranking one out.
You can pick up a used Barrett m82a1 for that price… and that gun got the second longest recorded confirmed kill at 1.75 miles away and has been used in a lot of other long range shots. I’d trust that stat for accuracy in a semi auto.
Vulcan
The God of the final hour
The Ruger SFAR 20" is one of the absolute softest AR10 308's i have ever shot
put a giggle switch in it and make it beltfed
I felt like I’ve seen this exact rifle before. Or something really close to it.
Rifle length gas system
Adjustable gas block
High mass bolt
Armaspec buffer
Brake if you want.
It will shoot very soft... and it won't cost what this does. And it will probably be more accurate.
Very interesting, didnt someone make a 50 cal version? Is it a copy cat? But for smaller calibers?
You can take the rifIe and shove upp your as for $6,700
lol
Hes got no more room up there!!
@@JohnnyChonkoOne way to find out. 'starts to put on rubber gloves'
Id buy one as a novelty but not at that price. Would make the ideal suppressor host.
2:46 "UR lyin!"
I look forward to seeing this on Garand Thumb.
I doubt we'll see it there unless they send him a free one to keep and 7000 rounds of ammo
Similar to .50 BMG rifles with reciprocating barrels.
Badass
Michael is the most squared away sales rep you spoke to of all the Shot Show 2024 videos TFBTV Showtime has posted, James. Keep up the good work with what you’re doing, and find more people like this guy to speak with on camera. I appreciate his professionalism.
A modern Auto five?
Anybody remember the GM6 Lynx .50?
Had me until the price came out😂 sick rifle though
If it doesn’t have enough back blast to clear out light vegetation, it isn’t really a recoilless rifle, now is it?
It looks kinda like MRAD, but that's interesting af
Wow. What neet gun. But out of my price range. Thanks.
I was really impressed with this last year. Accuracy, who cares as long as its good enough for the task at hand, less recoil would be really useful, but the price makes it pretty much pointless. I get it has to be a bit more money but like double the price of other offerings? Is that lower recoil worth an extra 3 grand on top of what current offerings are that you could use to put towards optics and ammo? Probably not. It doesn't matter how high tech or useful it can be if most people can't afford it. It then wont catch on and be another forgotten weapon.
I think "recoil-mitigating" is a better descriptor, lol.
In the year of our lord 2024 they have rediscovered the "next gen" tech of the long recoil action.
so it's a modern model 8
Anyone else notice how the shells just dribble out?
Return to Chauchat?
Imagine mixing this style along with the low bore. Might as well cost as a 2 decked out mac pro
Here you can even clearly see a difference just from the video!
lot of push back on the shoulder for no recoil
Send me one to review...maybe ill buy it
MSRP of $6795??? I really wish you guys would acknowledge ridiculous pricing. I understand high end markets demand high end prices, but that is absolutely ludicrous.
I thought about making a recoil chassis for my AR10.
So it’s a Remington 81 with ar controls
At 6795 I’m getting 2

@7k ouch!!! That's HK OG money

Idk why people are getting so mad about the price. Not every gun is for people on a tight budget. It's a really cool gun and I hope they can sell enough to keep doing cool stuff. No skin off my back if I personally can't afford it.
Exactly. Its like complaining that the new Vette costs $200,000. Its not for everyone, the everyone car is affordable but kinda lame.
Definitely!
It sure looks like shooter is moving in the shots i saw.
Can it mag dump?
Bad ass rifle
Did he say almost 7k!! This thing is going to be a flop unless they introduced a budget version… very interesting it’s an action few have made. For going on a hundred years. So I’ll give it props for that. It appears to have very low recoil as advertised… but 6,700$ that’s like two SCAR-17’s that’s hard to justify… like the price of the 277 furry Sig rifles.
I get they need to make up R&D costs, but damn please just sell it to PSA for X + profit + royalties and let them make a million for $1750.
Price whining from the poors (me included) aside, this is impressive.
We need more 6.8×51 options on the market.
PSA please give us a 6.8mm saber 10.
All that effort, and they let the bcg bottom out / hit an abrupt stop at the end of the cycle
With this price tag, they'd better build a mini 308 Lynx
Damn. For that price I’ll deal with a little recoil.
