    Ah, memories. Once when I was destitute and homeless, someone gave me a free Volvo if I could get it to start. Which was not the biggest problem, it was just the transmission interlock, I bypassed it and it started right up. The biggest problem was that it had been rear ended which destroyed all the lights. It also killed the headlights somehow, no idea why. I affixed trailer lights to the bumper, went to wire them in, and discovered that someone had snipped that entire part of the wiring harness off. No idea why. Anyway, I'm homeless, got $20 to my name, very limited tools, no multimeter. So, I wire them all to toggle switches that I mounted in a piece of cardboard and taped to the dash. Got fancy and had a three-way toggle with a blinker relay for turn signals. I had to screw a giant button to the brake pedal to get those lights working. Did this all in an Autozone parking lot, I might add. Lived in that thing for like 6 months and put 10,000 miles on it.

      It’s like that everywhere in Canada . Some car like Jetta mk6 tdi have something similar from the factory. I think it’s hard to find it in the USA but it’s standard for those model in Canada. But I will say that they become more rare on with newer car . With old diesel truck in some place that you couldn’t plug the truck you had to lights up a toilet paper roll full gas under the oil pan if you whanted to start it in a cold morning 😂

    In my aviation mechanic days, I was the primary focal for doing wiring/electrical jobs.
    1. Nobody else had the patience/or enough understanding to go through a wiring diagram that sometimes stretched through 13 pages of 11x17in paper.
    2. Nobody wanted to touch it, being afraid to short something out or get zapped.
    it was quite satisfying in the end, when you're updating an older small airplane with more modern avionics, and you end up with a ton of dead wires that you cleared out, left over from several previous avionics changes.

He carbon fibered a roof, converted it to all wheel drive, 3D printed material and CAD designed parts he needed and painted the car and is working on a custom dash. A rodent ate into the wiring of my BMW years ago - that was a $700 fix. If rodents can do that sort of damage to a 12V system, imagine what sort of damage they would do to an EV with their high voltage systems. Probably would have more visible fried rats around the car, I suppose, but even partially chewed but still functioning high voltage cables will be a major safety problem. I wouldn't want to be in a car with a 700V system with shorts in it.

    So, the magnum with a hellcat. That guy was in progress when you pulled up a clip. He could have had a very detailed home-drawn schematic he was using for that spaghetti mess he had. He mentioned he was preparing to loom it after he got everything routed. (not how I would do it, but if it worked for him, I can't fault it) Also, he mentioned that he "tacked in" a steering shaft, this is very common to do just to get something to your dino appointment. It isn't permanent, but He needed it to hold together just for one dino session and then, once returned home, he'd final weld it. I love seeing the usual butchery, but, in that case, I'd say hold judgement until you see the finished product. It may be MUCH nicer than you think since you were seeing it mid-process.

    I have seen some wiring nightmares in my time. The worst was a sound system install. I had a friend who had a sound system installed by a “professional”. They routed the power wires for the amps under the car to the frame rails and drilled a hole in the floor. The amps were zip screwed into the floor board above the gas tank and one went through the tank. They cut the harness to the stock amplifier and programmed the DSP wrong. The sound system company ended up refunding him and giving him a full new set of speakers just to keep him from suing them.

    One of my worst wiring nightmares brought a car that had a turbo model engine put in a base model, to only realise there was 6 harnesses spliced together inlc two separate main fuse boxes - after spending way to much time to get things working, i worked out i could of brought the body/engine harness from the later model and would of only needed to change about 4 plugs to make it work correctly (obviously who of had to take interior out and body panels off but would of been so much quicker)

    Back in the 1990s, I self-installed a Crutchfield car alarm out of yearning to protect and safeguard my '91 Geo Prizm with a sweet (based on my revenue stream at the time) Alpine CD / tape adapter deck.
    I got more than a few notes from my neighbors because I had unwisely decided not to install the ground wire on some static piece of the car's chassis, but rather took this stranded wire and stuck it under my driver's side seat.
    Just why ignore electrical, brothas.

    Great to see Aaron!! And just so you guys know, that one vid with the heater pad on the oil pan that all was actually a pretty standard winterization setup for cars in frozen climates. I live in Fairbanks Alaska and you’d be absolutely screwed in the winter when we hit -40F if you don’t have those installed. Typically includes a block heater, oil pan pad heater, battery pad heater or battery trickle charger, and sometimes a transmission pan pad heater. Without em any vehicle, especially diesels and any small car newer than 2010 usually, will not start due to cold and if you’re lucky enough to get it started, just like you mentioned about oil on the high performance use, there’s metal on metal contact and you’re trying to move cold molasses to the top of the engine thru a straw.

    63 yo Aussie electrician here. Since 14 worked multi storey construction. When I was 16 one older guy that had been giving me hell said he crashed his dirt bike, broke handlebars and replaced them, then removed wiring as he didn't need indicators. Said bike wouldn't start. Told him I would buy it for 50 bucks.
    Took a pair of wire strippers and a connector, joined the red with white stripe wire with the white with red stripe wire, kick started it and rode it home. If he wasn't an a-hole I would have mentioned the kill switch. You should have shown the clip where Homer Simpson had the coffee maker, microwave, TV going when he was on cruise control thinking it was autopilot.

    12:15 Get a cat. It works. I have no rodents in my place but you get the occasional cockroach. The other night I saw one land on the wall and it kept flying around. The cat was on it. He saw, he came, he conquered. Basically he waited until it got low enough then swatted it. It then tried to run away. He then swatted it again. After a few hits, he picked it up and held it for a while then dropped it . Rinse and repeat a few times and the roach ended up dead laying on its back (still intact). He's learned not to eat them. It took him less than a minute to kill that thing.
    12:51 That's scary. I like extra gadgets but with mine, there is an aux deep cycle in the back with a voltage sensitive relay. This has a fused direct connection to the primary battery. I then run over 10 extra circuits (each fused via an addition distribution board). In my setup, I tend to be drawing at least 3 Amps continuously (dash cams / GPS tracker, USB chargers,etc ) up to about 25 Amps (LED spotlights, better cabin light, etc ) all of the auxiliary battery so my primary cranking battery doesn't go flat.

    The video with the heating pad on the oil is a winterized vehicle from Alaska. It gets -60-70f in the winter. To prevent freezing you have a heating pad under your battery, on your oil pan, and usually on your transmission. You plug your vehicle in when you park to keep these warm and prevent catastrophic failure due to the cold.

  • @CountPantsulon
    @CountPantsulon Před měsícem

    That oil heater is something I would see occasionally when I worked in Ottawa, often on cars that came from Northern Ontario or Quebec, where it gets cold enough to need an oil heater as well as a block heater.

  • @higgydufrane
    @higgydufrane Před měsícem

    Up in the great white north, I had a battery heating blanket around the battery, a block heater to heat the coolant and an oil pan heater to heat the oil (on a 7.3L diesel). No matter how cold, it would start right up and not sound like it was going to destroy itself. You would also get cabin heat/defrost much quicker.

    It's nice coming from an electronics background and now working on heavy equipment. Everyone is so scared of electrical issues and they're usually pretty simple. There are some pretty in depth circuits on a lot of these machines but nothing like component level troubleshooting circuit boards. Always thought it was funny how some of these really great mechanics cower in the face of a simple harness issue. But I always say, everyone is good at something.
