Hey northern Canadian here. The first clip is a perfect example of why snow tires are so important in the snow. Off road tires are designed to “paddle” through dirt and mud for traction. Snow tires are designed to hold snow to the tire. The friction between snow on snow is much higher than snow on rubber.
Long story short, the Toyota was able to get traction due to the simple fact he had snow tires (tires with tread that doesn’t have too much empty space to hold snow).
Even without snow tires it looked possible in that case. They were getting some momentum from the snowbank but they kept ruining it by slamming on the gas and breaking traction.
The Toyota was also driving much better. No tire can magically save you when you drive into the snow bank and can't steer with your skid.
@@agibitableno this guy above is correct M/T or all terrain tires aren’t meant for the snow the tire is probably frozen solid which doesn’t help at all. Always invest in snow tires or all weather. Canadian here but I’m in Toronto.
@@dandreurquhart3511 So it's impossible to drive in snow without snow tires?
I agree with what you said, but I don't think the driver was helping themselves much here either.

Cuz its too expensive to fuck up lol

It never seems to amaze me that people spends thousands of $ on Ferraris & Lambos & never race !! LoL !!
@user-ds8pb8qk9l same concept. Same for lifted trucks you basically lose all the functionality of the vehicle just to waste gas to not get laid anyway lol

My mom always liked stupid Jeep cherokees. She did have an awesome Denali in between various jeeps. My brother and myself were talking to girls leaving the bar. We drove brothers Mustang GT. @@ALCRAN2010 if the inner tie rod was fixed to the rack, that would mean the entire rack assembly would have to move when you do a turn, that makes no sense whatsoever. That section behind the inner tie rod is still part of the rack that moves in and out in order to turn the wheels. Most of the time you can’t see that because there is a bellow on the rack covering it up. Not saying she’s a bad mechanic, but I don’t think that she was explaining that correctly.

@@The_Razielim yes she nailed it

Props to Natasha on not liking the "angry eyes"
In the first video Justin very quickly points out the problem with the Jeep. The tires are shedding the snow instead of packing into the tread gaps, like the Toyota’s tires. Dedicated winter tires have sipes that hold snow which provides superior grip over big knobbies.
The death wobble can happen to any truck with a solid front axle, it usually means you need to do some maintenance to your steering components.
And in my case, it was because my tire threw a weight and I had worn tie rods...
I was really surprised that the "real mechanics" did not mention replacing worn components.
@@NarfBLASTThey literally did though
Death wobble is due to changed geometry and worn parts. It definitely can't be fixed with a steering damper (so glad that wasn't brought up.
Heck, even my JKUR with hydro assist went wobbly on me due to TREs and ball joints. Never mind the 37s and long arm

Growing up in the mountains, I always loved to see how many Jeeps got stuck in snow. Your lifted Wrangler with mud tires doesn't mean you can tackle winter conditions.
As a long time jeep guy, I couldn't stress this enough to both my buddies and random people. My friends all had jeeps too when we were younger and they'd just full send them all the time in the deep snow and the wonder why they'd slide around or get stuck. Classic case of not understanding the limits of your rig based on your equipment.
Right.. That's when I park my JL Wrangler and take my Off Road Edition Ram. That thing sticks to snow better than my 18-wheeler did!
JEEP is an acronym for Just Empty Every Pocket.
I love this😂
A trick for snow that I learned is that the best path is the path that no one has taken because after enough times, those 2 clear lanes where you think your tires are on pavement are actually on snow packed into ice. So if it's fresh snow, good traction, if it's been driven over, it might be ice

Very cool to see Natasha again and the shout-out back to Matt's teaching on static ropes is good too. Great work by the whole Donut team, including the editors!
There is a reason rally cars use thin tires with spikes and not giant offroad tires, here in Norway most people outside the cities use spiked winter tires and ambulances has special tires with much more spikes then permitted on regular cars.
Conrats to tall the Donut crew. This is the most successful second channel launch I've seen.
I know on M1 Abrams tanks that get mired that bad (sunk into mud), you have to tie a log or something to a track piece and 'drive' the log all the way under the tracks to relieve the vacuum caused by moving it.
One of the reasons you see logs tied to the backs of Russian and Ukrainian tanks in that war.
Wow, how on earth do you drive the logs? Can you wedge the log in the exposed track and it will pull under tracks? Can't imagine it's that easy. Not a 2x4 haha.
@@nathangilbert1344I imagine it would be the same concept as a traction pad for regular vehicles, set it out in front, drive over it.
Its utterly insane how strong the suction is with wet mud like that. I used to work for an excavation company and there were times when I needed to be pulled out of a trench by an excavator. Hold onto the bucket and pray my boots stay on.
Or as we learned from an older Donut video that just turned into a short, get your air hose right in there and pop 'em open :)

As a resident of east tn, i completely understand the mall crawler sentiment. We get invaded by the jeep crawl every year, plus locals.
And ive become convinced theres some kind of starter pack for em.
Painted handles/hinges, "grrr face", obnoxious headlights, gadsden flag stickers/plates, and the giant jack thats never been used because the base is pristine. 😂
I still would totally buy a 80- 90s cherokee for winter though.
Seriously. Spent 6years living in Utah and the number of mall crawlers out there is insane. All clean as can be and with what always seems to be the exact same kits. Like they bought them all at the same store at the same time. Driving down to southern Utah tho. That's where you'd see a ton of cool rigs. Folks that knew what they were doing typically. (Mostly).
a trick i learned a while back about death wobble in jeeps is that a lot of time you can stop it with new parts but it will come back. it tends to be that the steering box is loose and able to wobble around which transfers the wobble to the wheels. tightening the steering box bolts will often times solve the problem
I experienced the death wobble riding shotgun in my buddies old CJ going 75mph on a highway over pass once. Legit one of the scariest moments I've ever had on the road. We got off the high way as soon as we could and rode home with a friend. You don't know true fear until you narrowly avoid flying off the side of a high way 100 feet off the ground lol.
That dw is serious. Been there. It's only scary the first 100 times.
No Steering dampers?
done 100km with death woble above 60km/h, in a land Rover defender, panhard bushs, gone, the woble went away above 70jm/h, but If i hit 60km/h, they stayed ultil stop
Got death wobble? Slow down and drive it home. Then look for slop in your front end and fox those worn parts. It’s a solid axle thing.
@@duramaxdad It was like 13 years ago back when my friends and I were fresh out of high school, meaning the cars we could afford were absolute piles lol. We probably would have limped it home if we hadn't almost death wobbled right off the side of a bridge. We were too freaked out to get back on the high way in that thing.
10:25 this is what we at dealerships deal with constantly from customers complaining about, its a grand cherokee and the radios are all having that delamination problem over time

@@Mebbwebb Audi dealership here, this "push test" on the trim is such a subjective and pointless test. The difference in quality I've found is if you push the same spot twice. Nolan: "Almost like a tractor."
The old MBs, CJ-2As, and I believe the CJ-3Bs as well, had implements that you could hook up to them and use them like a tractor.
I once used a tie down strap to pull a car out of snow. It was the holidays and we didn't want our dad to be all pissy about it. I just slapped it on and went very slow. Generally anything is much weaker when it has to deal with shocks. I told my brother "this never happened" and we got there without our parents noticing we were even late. It was pretty sweet.
god damn i miss having those “never happened” experiences with my brothers lool. just experiencing sheer panic for a short period of time and then having to act like it never happened
if you had a tow hook that mounts in the front of your car you can tie the strap to that and hook it to your truck or suv and that will be much more secure than putting it on the grill of the stuck car
Hi real Canadian here. That first jeep issue is the posi rear end wants to slide to the low spot of the road. Also it's not deep treads that help in snow but rubber that stays soft in cold
tire compound doesn't get enough credit, top comment guy is technically correct but left that out so should be awarded no points.
For someone who owns a 1981 CJ5 I love that you ended the video with a REAL Jeep. 🥰👍
That monsoon is in Ruidoso, New Mexico! They roll in fast but I bet he only had to wait 15 minutes or so for it to clear up. Love seeing a small town local clip!
Speaking of Fiats.... on this side of the pond there's an epic little legend called the Fiat Panda 4x4. The old one... not that the new iteration is bad but the old one was epic. @@antoniohagopian213tires*
@@antoniohagopian213 Wrong, wide tires are for being ON snow. Skinny tires are for cutting THOUGH snow. It's the same for mud.
@@0Rookie0 I'm not wrong, wide tyres only work for soft snow that is deep, if it's compact or frozen you will slip. And snow isn't "soft" unless it is new and didn't go through a cycle of melting and re-icing. In my country mountains are immediately in front of the ocean so we always have a high humidity even up there. Unless you live in a place where the snow is always soft and never ices up you definitely are not more "right" then I am.

As someone from the north of sweden i can tell you that the Jeep in the first clip was slipping in the icy worn down tracks, while the toyota was getting traction on the snowy mid-lines. Also, if you go into the sidelane it will "suck you in" which can be scary as hell if youre going 100-130 kmh

My 01 needed metric, imperial, torx and Allen. That's a load of bollocks
On the first one: M/T tires suck on road in the winter, big tread blocks have no traction. 4 Runner had BFG KO2 which are 3 peak rated.
Death wobble: they don't do that when the tie rods aren't worn out. Fix the worn parts and get an alignment.
11:13 He's sitting on the axles and skid plate. Those were some deep ruts going in. My TJ has 35's and I wouldn't have gone through that.
13:05 Mall Rated means you have low profile tires. Off road tire diameter is at least twice the rim diameter.
For the death wobble it could also be the stabilizer shock
Used to work a a Meijer and one day a kid in a jeep decided to drive up the 2 story mound of snow from plowing the parking lot. Mid you it was April and 60 degrees out (we had a late spring it was the first week of warm weather). He almost made it to the top before he sank into a bowl that had formed from the top melting. I laughed my ass off as he sank up to his doors rooolster tailing pure slush. Last I saw he was sitting on the roll cage calling someone to come get him out.
Angelina took one look at that wiring job and said nope
I find it so funny every time the Donut crew watch a clip of cars in the snow. That's like a normal January day over here in Montreal. That jeep simply didn't have proper winter tires (or all terrain tires rated for winter)
I had that same gen 4runner and the traction control in those things is the greatest system I've ever experienced. It instantly reduces power to the exact amount needed to not allow wheelspin instead of using brake vectoring. It allows it to very easily manage ice, snow, and sugar sand.
First off, always love starting my CZcams day off with Angelina's gorgeous smile and contagious laugh. My first time watching her and Natasha together and gotta say, the girls are rulin' and schoolin' on RMS. :)
As a Canadian who drives on this shit 5 months a year I can't help but laugh watching people completely fail at driving on snow and/or ice. All the driver has to do is stop spinning his/her tires and take it a bit easier on the accelerator.
If you just can't get the hang of easy acceleration then go for winter grips with a full set of metal studs... it will help a bit or just stay off the roads until they are salted/gravelled. I try to stay off the roads for the first few storms because for some reason many seem to forget that ice and snow are slippery, same as last year, and you ALWAYS have to adjust for road conditions.
I've always called the first few snowstorms "Idiot avoidance days", I just stay off the road
Let's not act like all northerners or Canucks know how to drive in the snow though.. when I would deliver freight up in Maple country, I would see sooooo many idiots crashing out in the snow! And yes, they were locals.
@@FahimibnDawud Preachin' at the choir. The list of people I will passenger with is much much smaller in the Winter, or when conditions are less then good like heavy fog and such for that matter. Last sentence was to imply that many of the idiots that just can't get it right take themselves outta the season early. ;)
I think it was about the 3-minute mark Natalie compares snow to mud. I would rather get stuck in snow any day of the winter over mud but I'm also a Mainah. What is basically a giant suction cup holding onto every single part of your tractor but snow will pack and that's it. You might have to smash your way through some ice (compacted snow formed) but at least when you moved a section you have gotten rid of it
as long as it dont have the angry grid she said- thats whats funny the angy grid i'd say
Yeah!

that first clip is just another example of 4runner supremacy in 4wd/offroad situations ❤
natasha was a great addition, i love seening more people come around for this channel.
Agreed.
Never air down in snow... that spreads the weight out... Snow tires are narrow on purpose so direct the weight on to the smallest patch possible... I'm Canadian so I would know
Then you would also know Wranglers are garbage in snow no matter what.
Yes, and downhill 4x4s don't help you in the snow either - chains do

Airing down in snow isn't usually the right move.
You want to cut through down to the solid ground underneath so keep them mostly inflated
Depends on snow depth... But yeah in light snow with skinny tires it probably would be better to stay aired up I would guess, I am fairly certain that in deep powder with wide tires it would be better to air down though
@@trevorkinman1946yeah that’s probably what she means, she would obviously not run them on a flat one inch of snow 🤣
She specifically mentions that she would do it when she got to the mountain, which would imply they're at standard pressure when driving on roads.

I liked Jeeps a lot more back when Wranglers were basically the cheapest new vehicle you could buy. Almost no amenities but even stock you could have a good bit of fun. I look at them now, see the price, look at it again and wonder what happened.
Greed happened. Greed and pandering to main stream auto culture. Jeep needs to take it's wrangler lines back to that bare bone, stock workhorse. Get rid of all these bells and whistles. They also need to make a decent small duty pickup like the Comanche again. But I have zero faith in Fiat to deliver one that looks remotely as good as the OG Comanche.
Growing my dad and I had an old 70's, like an real early one. We took the back off so it was a open back pickup essentially. That water never bothered us, the snow was annoying but fun times were had.
I love the jeeps that have the sticker that says" if you can read this, tip me over." The sticker tells it all about the driver.
I like to think that in that last clip, the dude wasn't just driving up a mountain, but that it's actually the driveway to his house.

I've seen the first one. Pretty sure was on MTs. A lot of MTs suck terribly in conditions like that. I don't understand why they are so popular in mountain states like CO. I much prefer ATs with three peak rating out here. Still plenty enough traction for the pretty wimpy mud we usually have out here and generally as good or better than MTs in every other situation.
yep, tossed my MTs after doing that on ice.
Yeah I ran into this with my MTs. Had to scrap snow out of the treads to keep from sliding down the bank lol.
I didn't realize the death wobble was hard to fix for some people.
When my Jeep did it I replaced the steering box. That fixed it.
That is almost never the problem. It is also the most expensive part of the steering system.
@AJ-ri5ee - Sure, it was expensive. But it fixed it.

Jeep has now turned their brand into an aesthetic only type brand. You buy a Jeep to look like a Jeep, and not to actually use it like they were meant to be used. Otherwise you’d buy a Toyota or other functional brand. Similar to the G Wagon.
To be fair, a lot of Toyota's nowadays are absolute garbage as well. Toyota has been removing off road features that people actually use, including recovery points. The 4runner is pretty hot garbage without a bunch of modifications, same with the tundra.
Thats not true at all. Don't get me wrong im not a fan of any jeep built after 2006. but you're still buying the most capable out the box vehicle on the market. It's a short wheelbase with solid axles. If they were turning into an aesthetic brand they would have IFS by now.

That little animal never experienced the "Jeep wobble" in the steering until I put the big tires on it. It would begin the wobble at about 47 on the speedometer and stop around about 52.
Since this range was about roughly 63 to 70 actual mph and I pretty much exclusively ran on roads limited to a max of 55, I was able to just stay slower than the death wobble range. On the rare occasions when I was on the interstate, since the speed limit was 65 or 70, I was able to get above the shakes and keep it there.
When that thing would start the wobble, it shook worse than an alcoholic who hadn't had a drink in a week and a half!

@@denniswalters3207yep! My lifted 97 Grand Cherokee did it, I replaced the track bar with an aftermarket one from iron Rock Offroad and it was so much better, completely cured the DW and the steering felt better as well.
As a Toyota owner, I needed this video lmao
I'd out wheel you
Nothing beats the classic jeep jump and the body falls off the frame and rolls.
That first clip made me chuckle. My Jeep had big nobbly tires like that and had great traction in snow but terrible traction on wet pavement. Slush on the road was the worst.
Looks to me like he's having similar issues.
I have a 2015 Jeep Compass and I end up having to replace the ball bearings every year. So I fully agree with what they said about how unreliable they are.
I work at an oil change shop and I can guarantee that every compass, renegade, and Cherokee that comes in will have oil burnt onto the dip stick, a dipstick that reads that it's at least 2 quarts over the recommended oil level, the oil evacuation machine will read 2 or more quarts lower than recommended and if you pull the drain plug because you don't trust the the machine it will have a bone dry pan. The wrangler, gladiator, grand Cherokee and grand wagoneer don't have those issues.
