In this video we cover both the topics of how a player can learn to stop button mashing and how a player learns to use assists in their combos. Obviously with trial and error and more importantly time being an important factor in both.

Are you a new CZcamsr? Welcome bro. You gonna blow up with these dragonball fighterZ content man. This game is hype for 2018
Yeah I would say my channel is relatively new! Glad so many people are enjoying the game!
DotoDoya of course . The people wanted a dragonball fighting game and this is what we got. Plus a dragonball movie at the end of the year
@@DotoDoya How times change!

GrMinecraftFriends we have a Seer. Man predicted it all.
I feel like one of the biggest contributors to button mashing is the fact that your opponent is moving unpredictably, compared to a got standing still lol. I'll practice a combo for 30 minutes and go online and never connect the first hit, so I never even use it
Yup, its all about the stress factor. Having a real person to go against makes it very hard to perform a combo youve only used on the training dummy!
I do the same.. I feel like all my combos start with a super dash so I can get it range. However all my combos start with anything BUT the super dash :(
Same tbh
This is where the game gets difficult.
You gotta learn how to essentially take what you get sometimes.
Most of the time You're not gonna land the hit you wanna land especially if your opponent knows or has an idea of what you're trying to do.
Jiggonomics learn how to combo of different things. A good way to think about it is learn the combos to the characters you want to play. Then learn the movement and what move does what to the opponent. Try to figure out ways to open you opponent and when the first hit connects combo off of it. Then from there you just learn to extend combos and do more damage.
For a select few of you this may sound like something you've heard before only now with visuals! Thanks for checking out that stream earlier by the way, sorry about that! More streams with actual gameplay will be coming soon!
Thanks for the write up! I think it is important to keep in mind that big assist combos just wont function if you are missing what that assist brings to the table. So I agree with what your wrote, but it is also possible to go in another direction in which you can be so varied that you have different combos for different scenarios. Its up to the player to decide which they want to roll with and its one of my favorite aspects of 3v3 games!
DotoDoya hey is there anyway you can make a video on how to stop the assist tag from dashing into low upper cuts. when they are tagged in. Pls i need major help on that
say the triangle or square not the middle or long attacks just say the controller buttons
I’ve never played a fighting game, this is definitely getting my ass whooped lmao. I play the tutorial and like “yea I got this” then in the match forget everything lol
Yeah its like two different worlds with some time though you'll start to get the hang of it! Welcome to fighting games by the way!
DotoDoya thanks! Definitely going to be an uphill battle lol
How's the uphill battle? I'm just now getting into this game and fighters for the most part. Having a rough time
@Christopher Marlowe hey man! still practicing almost everyday. College has started back up so not as much time. Getting better though. Still getting my booty kicked on the regular, but that is the best way to improve in my opinion.
@@alexsharp3481 what platform do you play on?
Thanks for the video. Its cool you actually made this. Your videos have helped my game improve by alot. Playing casual helped my button mashing a bit to where i know what i should be pressing (just gotta work on smashing when i land a hit lol). Ill be sure to lab some more to break the habit and now work on my assist combos. the tip with playing a lvl100 cpu and just blocking has helped as well. Glad im going in the right direction that will lead me back to rank.
Keep up wat you are doing man, it helps give new players the tools we need to continue loving this game.
Just found your channel and binged through a lot of analysis and tips/help videos and I absolutely love it! Subscribed and hit the bell right away. I think your idea for an analysis series is very unique and incredibly helpful. Keep it up!
Glad to see this video. Personally, I come from a fighting game background, so I haven’t had a problem with button mashing. My problem has been about integrating the assists into my play, seeing as I always played 1 v 1 fighters
Definitely will check out Clayton’s channel! Thanks! You are killing it!
This is my first proper fighting game so I thought I'd spend time learning about mechanics, manual combos and so on. After a little while I felt that I'd gotten the hang of them.
But as soon as I jump into PvP, I'm right back to button mashing. In those rare moments when I find myself in position to do a combo I totally screw it up. It's really frustrating.
Yeah I can understand that! Just know that with time it gets better if you keep at it and practice staying calm!
That's certainly good to hear. This is my first time trying out competitive play in something that isn't a shooter of some sort, so it's all new to me.
Dnt Wry Something that helped me to stop mashing was having a training partner better than me. Sure, at first he destroyed me, but he always told me what I was doing wrong and gave suggestions on how to get better. The community is pretty active, so don't be afraid to ask help.
That happens, just find someone you can play with consistently that's just as interested in learning as you are. Muscle memory is huge for fighting games usually I practice my buttons first getting used to the characters buttons can help you adapt combos even when you were just mashing something out and hoping it works. Its fine to not be able to do so in this game because getting clean hits to do one can be hard to notice with everything else you have to focus on.
Uhmmm I guess maybe start playing against real players often even if you’re bad to kind of get yourself used to infinite possibilities
glad you shouted out that channel. keep up the videos ! thanks for the tips
That combo at the end was crazy! 😁👍🏽
Loving your channel btw.
I already know a lot about fighting games but I love what you’ve been doing, helping the FGC by helping out all these new players. Keep up the good work
I just wish I could have found a way to make it kill!
Yeah so close! lol
This is the highest damaging combo I've seen so far though
This was a fantastic point of view, even 3 years later..
Oh god, I decided to look into older videos. Forgot how you sounded back in the days Doya :O
Thanks so much I watch a lot of your tutorial videos and they been helping me out a lot
Yea, this channel is great. Keep this up man.
How to stop mashing: play the game
How to use assists: use assists
Marvelous
MisterAnimann ikr fuck him. And here i thought i would actually get some usefull tips. Clickbaited yet again
Jeffrey N not really clickbaited..
It's not clickbait if that's the truth lol
Lol he's right though 😂
Platypus Person no, it is.
Subscribed and liked just by the fact that you gave amazing credits to someone else in the community !
Wow, how time flies. our boy Dotodoya was so different "back then" and it was only a year and a halfish ago. Spoken slower, and you can felt he had some insecurities, but, he really matured a lot and gain a lot more confidence. Still adore your work put into this channel, thank you for the content! :)
Thanks for another awesome video Doya, really helping me understand this game.
Thanks for checking out the videos!
I have had the game for a month now......your videos are amazing. Im glad I submitted you you🤧😢, I learned alot
Clayton Chapman is ridiculous. The dude is a mad genius.
great video bro subbed great content
Suggestion for another topic: how do I know when to stop blocking? like how do I know when I can punish a blockstring before they start their pressure up again?
I will keep this topic in mind!
been loving your content, just keep it up my man!
yea that would be great
DotoDoya pls do it
Jason Stone we dont know the frame data yet. meaning the frames it takes to do a move, and what is plus on block or minus on block. being plus on block means tht u have extra frames allowing you to follow up after tht move/ability with another. being minus on block means tht you cant do any move for a certain amount of time letting the enemy get in hits
I just picked this game up last night. Like any fighting game, I just drop into practice mode and mash to see what happens. But I'm careful to keep track of my inputs and look back to see what I did and what came out of it. I was able to grind out supers for 3 characters and string them into passable combos. However, when I came across this video it gave me a huge boost of confidence. You've assured me that I'm on the right path to breaking the mashing habit and form good practice habits. This is coming from a guy who plays competitive Smash Bros, where combos are fairly easy to copy once you're comfortable executing every attack in their intended situation. Thank you again for this video!
Finally the video is up, lol loved the stream but yeah i love your videos and i cant wait to see many more keep up the great work
Sorry you had to see that stream, real ones will be coming soon!
Lol it was interesting and cool, like a little behind the scenes thing.
Thank you for this video, helped me alot. A tough way to get into the game :D
Damn dude that was legit at the end! Definitely wanna see how well it does in a real match!
It's not real. He uses Tien as an assist then immediately DHC. Tien would be on CD in a real match, but training mode has a quick cool down option for assists.
GriFFonRec4
Aw I see.
Dude you've been blowing up I'm proud of you!
Thanks, im just glad people seem to enjoy these videos!
Great depth covered here and excellent topic!
Thanks!
Hey thanks Dotodoya! I just stared streaming DBFZ and started training. hopefully one day, once my skills have improved, I will be strong enough to fight you!! #goals
also my stream is @Madsquerl just in case you might see me in your chat!
also want to say I love your daily videos and i just watched you on Twitch on your 3rd anniversary. I felt special being there! lol. Keep up the great work! And thanks for getting me into DBZF!!
Every little thing I come across on this game ends up teaching me something new. I thought it was going to be difficult to improve quickly after I won my first 11 games online, but just observing casual players at my college has resulted in plenty of "No way, that works?!" Moments that have me messing around in the lab trying to replicate.
Fantastic video thanks
90% of the ppl i face online are dash -> light auto combo -> repeat
Same for me
tankata2 Either low rank or casual. Auto combos have some of the easiest punishes. Only thing saving them are assist, or a move they use.
New player here so I had to pop back and check out your tips seeing as how you play now
LOL nailed it with your analysis in the beginning
After playing this game for a week, playing a standard fighter like mortal kombat was so hard. Muscle memory caused me to keep blocking with down or back instead of the triggers 😂
Jashan
Mortal combat is a standard fighter but the blocking is different from most normal fighting games.
In all honesty Mortal Kombat and smash are the only fighting games I know of to have a block button.
The rest are just holding back.
AlphaJNitro007 yeah tbh i think holding back is a better mechanic than a block button
Yeah same problem. I found myself using the Xenoverse block button for a while, haha.
Great video, and thank you for the recommendation on the other channel. I'm excited, finally got an extended session in training mode last night and the game is starting to click for me now a little. My defense is still pretty bad but I was having an easier time getting some manual combos in, even combo'd my supers in a few times. Once you get comfortable with the core mechanics, the game slows down a little and your brain can finally catch up to your eyes.
Ayo doto been a goat since day one fr wassup doto if you see this
My goodness, the calmness in your voice. Character development from then to now. Dont change Doto
Krillin Meter Burn for full Kienzan is hard to resist.
Actual combo string I make use of is a standard Yamcha string of L combo, then the usual jump cancel L/M x 2, then Vanish for a wallbounce and combo into spirit ball or Level 3, but I've found some new ways to play with this.
18 has a standard combo as well similar to above but no vanish, just ends with Level 1. A good way to pressure someone to switch in the first 20 seconds of the fight.
Good stuff. You've peaked my interest in the game. Been stuck on MH world haha
I've been playing that game a little as well! I hope you have fun with dragonball!
Arcade mode is pretty good too especially when you get to the harder ones. They give you great pressure to get used to knowing your combos
Practice mode against standing cpu's that counter on block and then on hit, you'll start to find out which unique normal moves combo into others, and what doesn't work.
You grew so fast I swear you were at 1k like 3 days ago
Aye it’s here! The mashing leaks where real😂.
On a real note tho, congratz Doto you’ve blown up lately, I just subscribed when you were at 456 subs and now you are over 2k😱 sick!
Thanks for your hard work and good content, really enjoy your vids!
Its true, the leaks came from a very reliable source that being me, myself, and I accidentally pushing start streaming
DotoDoya LOL you leaked the info, we confirmed the content =P! Still can’t believe you accidentally streamed your recording lol, it was a fun experience xD.
Would love to see a real stream in the future bro!
Yea real streams are going to happen! What a way to start off the streams!
DotoDoya nice! Can’t wait for those =D!
I see that supermega video in your recommendations. Refined taste, my friend.
Love your videos please keep posting
Happy to hear you are enjoying the videos!
DotoDoya what do you use for editing and things? I use OpenShot editor but ive been trying to open up to more software
I use premiere pro to edit my videos!
DotoDoya how much is it?
Okay old doto thanks for the tips
This actually helped me out lol
I just started back playing dbfz and I’m back in the training mode trying to get better at the game
Hey can you talk about poking and zoning? - like pushing buttons to try keep an opponent out, thanks!
Wow really indept explanantion... Im subscribing for sure... Thanks for the tips... I have Trunks, Frieza and kid buu as my team but i regress to button mashing when im online... Smh it stinks... Ill try your tips out... Again thanks
I cant help but button smash coming from performing quite good combos from UMVC3 to basics with DBFZ... I really want to learn this game..
the evolution. is so real.
You my boi doto
Here is the DBFZ button layout that I recommend for arcade stick controller users (For the PS4 version of DBFZ, for example):
X button = light attack
Square button = medium attack
Triangle button = heavy attack
Circle button = special attack
R1= assist button 1
R2 = assist button 2
And the rest of the buttons = no use
I enjoy starting combos by bating in attacks, using 18’s barrier, then my trunks assist to start a jump combo
My fave combo will simply be ssj goku warp kamehame into the corner into base goku spirit bomb to shoot them into the bomb. So beautiful to see a kamehameha shot into a giant lvl3 spirit bomb
Does button mashing count when you are trying to recover? Or just when you are sweating to pull off a hit or combo?
I love how I heard the monotone intro and my IMMEDIATE reaction was to think to myself "character development"
I dunno. My timing is off when I try to use my assist Into combos. Like I either call the assist too early or I call it too late. Do you have any tips to help with the timing of when to call in the assist when you knock the opponent down?
with teen gohan how did u do that aerial combo? down hard punch then jump light light and then u kick them straight up..HOW DID U DO THAT? im ps4 by the way
really like ur channel
Thanks, glad you enjoy it!
an easy way to train yourself at the game is to do a local match with a CPU and gradually raise the level as you become more comfortable with the combos
Can you break down combos & air combos.
He sounds so different from 2022 he is more nervous and less energetic
holy dotodoya did tutorials
Is it me or I always struggle to do a quarter circle + whatever? Sometimes it works... sometimes it doesn’t >:(
This just comes to down to practice, everybody struggles with the motion at first. Just remember to slide it from the bottom to forward and then hit the button!
Igor Lelis Most of us have been there. Keep practicing and you won't even realize you're doing it.
My problem is the other part, where i'm too frantic and i press the button before i've actually finished the motion. Playing MKX got me pretty good at doing the motions.
DEADPOOL9AND thank you bro.
This game is great
How do I actually get close to people to use combos? It seems every time I try to do a combo I get dragon rushed or I am forced to dragon rush them and then I can’t set up a super long combo. I’m new so idk how to actually get close enough to people without having to dragon rush
Ah yeah clayton is soo sick lol in the combos. He does Fragrances too hahahah this is funny
I just started out and i struggle to go for a second combo but must be a new player thing
Have you had a chance to use any of those combos in an actual match yet? I can imagine it would be pretty difficult. It LOOKS difficult at least. I can never get the timing for assists right.
Can you provide the input info on the sides whenever you are in training so we can see the fully optimizes combos? Great videos, my brotha!
Thanks! and yeah that is something I tried to do with most of the combos in this video and will do for all of them in the future.
Mr. DotoDoya, I think this Knuckles would agree: You are showing us de wae of FighterZ! You are, to quote Knuckles, "de queen!"
my biggest issue is timing. I can put the combos in but the character doesn't input the move which leads to me mashing because the character doesn't do the move. I figured i'm pressing the buttons too fast but whenever i try to slow them down it leaves an opening.
I got all the way to super sayin rank then started to get friggin bodied and roped back to frieza clan I think I'll take your advice and do casual matches only until I get more comfortable. Cuz I can put things to together in practice but in matches I friggin crumble
I wish Clayton would add some annotations. It's hard to follow for an average player like myself
Lmao! I just posted a video on Instant Air Dash V.S Dragon Rush cuz I hate spammers haha! Awesome Video!
I think its high stress and frames also, along with how your opponent move in the game. I can practice a fighting game for years, aka UMVC3 and SF4 and still button mash when in a pinch situation. Also when I forget all the combos I learned when in a online match or playing hard difficulty. And its the cost for my button mashing. Its like I’m not calm and smart enough to be a fighting gamer.
Love how when the game was in the middle of a Super Attack you just flailed on the buttons 😆
That legit cracked me up
I am not a patient man
DotoDoya I do something similar in Xenoverse 2, when I clash with someone I almost always hold the right trigger. It looks like I forgot my moves and had to double check 😆 not sure why I do that though
Should I use the T Pad or the left joystick on console?
Lets Goooooo
I'm having difficulties with the basic and advanced special moves on the PS4 controller is there an easier way?
Rare footage of doto without his pink square
Hey dude, i can't combo kamehameha or like you know basically when they're sliding i do what the tutorial says but normally i end up jumping, and not using the special move.. missed so many combos because of this..
well youtube decided to show me this now. is it trying to tell me something?
i have a question, which do you prefer the D-Pad or the Left-Stick?
i have tried using both and sometimes supers are hard to land with the dpad but using the left stick makes you jump
when you don't want to sometimes.
I like the dpad better for those reasons that you listed! You can practice the inputs but accidentally jumping always cost me in really close matches!
OMG SAME! Because of this i'm thinking of getting fight stick in hopes that it would, in turn, rectify the concurrent problem I'm having with this game right now.
thanks for the advice
Anytime!
Should've found this video before I win 55 games out of 128
I literally got the game and went straight to ranked with one of the default teams. I still really want my twenty or so losses back from that experience.
3 years later and now we have jiren both gogeta's an ui goku, anyone startin now is gonna have fun lol
It really sucks that my main team right now is Goku(SSB), Gohan(Adult) and Piccolo.
While they are extremely mobile cause all 3 of em have access to basically a 0 meter vanish attack among other things, I really can't use their assists cause they don't mesh well at all, and Gohan is the only one with access to a 0 meter beam attack.
That being said, a high, low and head on triple super combo with Gohan's level 3, Piccolo's Hellzone Grenade and Goku's mid air Kamehameha is just too cathartic to look at, even though the damage does get scaled quite a bit
Hey DotoDoya, nice Video. I'm playing this awesome game since the release and thanks to your videos I'm able to do combos nearly flawlessly, but there is still one problem that I have when I go online: "I have problems to reach my opponent without super dash to damage him"
Often times I'm getting outzoned and if I'm able to reach my opponent I get blocked no matter if I'm starting mid or low or with a special. Are you planning to make a video with tips which can help with that problem?
Sorry if my english isn't perfect. It got a bit rusty XD
I'll cover this!
I can't get my assists to connect. The only time I'm landing them is after arial heavys with incredibly precise timing. When I try and combine assists with specials or what have you, it just doesn't work. Maybe it's something to do with playing on ps4? Idk, I'm useless with a keyboard so that wouldn't help matters anyway.
For me it’s not so much the stress of the other player it’s more so the timing of every character’s moves. Say I want to start a combo with two light attacks and then a medium. I press L,L,M but I press the second L too fast and skips right to M.
Someone please explain what does the green arrow mean in special attacks in one switch
this might be the hardest fighting game to learn since street fighter imo. i cant seem to learn any combos
So I've never really played very many fighting games of this style. I mean, if u count Smash Bros, Brawlhalla, and stuff like that, then I've played more than my share of fighting games, but they're nothing like FighterZ. I've played the first Mortal Kombat, a little bit of Street Fighter, and even Dragon Ball Z Extreme Butoden 3DS, the last of which I got pretty decent at, but this seems even more complicated. I played training mode a few times, did a couple tutorials, and I'm like, "I've got this! This seems fun!" *Plays against AI and dies immediately* I've gotten since, but I still don't have the skill I'd like to have. Just as you said, when I get in a particularly tough match, I start rapidly pressing random buttons. Maybe it's the fact that I haven't had the game that long and need more experience? I dunno.
