I Just Drove A Testang, A Tesla-Swapped 2007 Mustang From AEM EV!

  • AEM made a name for providing engine tuners with software and hardware for their builds. Now transitioned to the enthusiast electric swap community, AEM EV built the "Testang" by swapping Tesla components into a 2007 Ford Mustang to prove their battery and drive motor components can help to clean up project wiring while preventing dangerous overheating conditions.
    The Testang looks almost stock til you get up close and notice the Tesla brakes and calipers at the rear axle, plus all the "High Voltage" stickers signaling what's going on under the skin. But can AEM EV transform a mid-2000s Mustang GT into something that's actually fun to drive? Watch Michael Van Runkle take the Testang on a spin through LA traffic as the ultimate driveability test.

    If you want to drive another one I have another one done. I built the AEM GT Mustang. The new one is a M3 Tesla powered version.

    The testang is very cool, but aem did NOT in fact build it. Roadstercycle built it and sold it to aem/holley high voltage.
    They swapped out the ldu for a sdu and changed around some of the ev controls.
    But roadstercycle did the original conversion and all fabrication work.
    Plus he is wrong about the batteries to. They aren't from a tesla at all, it's using cells from a hybrid Chrysler wrecked minivan.
    Because they offer better c rate. 🤔

      We never claim to have 'built' it and repeatedly mention that the car was purchased already converted. We did, however, perform extensive work once we received it, so in its present form it is not the same as its original iteration.

      @@AEMpowerTVelectronics the aem/Holley high voltage staff members haven't come right out and said it.
      But others who have reviewed the car have in fact claimed you guys built it and not been corrected by aem staff members.
      The last motoiq video was the most honest where it was stated that aem didn't do the original conversion several time's during the video.
      But as you say, aem instead rewired parts of it and added additional capabilities through their ev specific parts&tuning.
      I say keep up the great work on making fun ev swaps possible for diyers and shops interested in doing them. Maybe at the next Holley high voltage fest. Y'all can gather some ev swaps together using aem parts and race them. 👍🏻

    I have watched several of these EV swaps that talk about driveability but rarely mention things like heat, defrost and AC. In most areas of the country that have four seasons interior comfort and the ability to remove frost/fog from the windshield is a big part of driveability .

    • @teovr
      @teovr Před 2 lety +3

      We talked about it but that portion didn't make the video's final cut! AEM is in the process of installing full AC and heat, with progressive temperature regulation rather than just on and off like many EV swaps. It's an important question for sure, AC would have been great because my GoPros kept overheating on a moderately warm LA day!

      Very good and legitimate question! We can do AC. Please check out this video of Matt Hauber from Stealth EV using our VCU200 to control dual heating and cooling loops, and integrating AC into the Icon Derelict Merc project: czcams.com/video/pnB3on3FJLo/video.html

      Lookup the guy who actually built this his channel is roadstercycle. He's already converted another s197 into a testang this time with a model 3 drive unit. 👍🏻

    the only thing I dont like are the wheels

    • @AEMpowerTVelectronics
      @AEMpowerTVelectronics Před 2 lety

      We needed the offset of these wheels to fit them into the arches since the Tesla is wider than the S197. They are a stopgap for the moment. We will be swapping them out for Finspeed F10s soon! Should get an additional inch of contact patch width, too.

  • @CarlDraper
    @CarlDraper Před 2 lety +4

    Nope this is the dumbest idea ever. The whole point of a Mustang is the sound of the V8!

    • @benitomunoz8661
      @benitomunoz8661 Před 2 lety +2

      Point of the mustang is to bring a sense of liberation and freedom to the driver through am affordable and obtainable performance experience. Some would say the sound is part of it. Others would say how fast it goes around curves, a 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1m and some even argue the nurb. I think if by getting rid of the sound, we get rid of the pollution, and still get (and improve) performance....i think that's where the appreciation stems for a build like this. Nice!

      The original had a straight 6cyl it was advertised towards secretaries, and over 70% of all mustangs ever made do not have a v8 under the hoods. So are those also by your definition not real mustangs? 🤔
