  • This is the first time I've ever made a cage crinoline or a hoop skirt before and I think it turned out pretty good for my first attempt! Of course there were some hiccups but that's to be expected when trying something new. I followed Farthingale's cage crinoline tutorial pretty closely and there are only a few things I would change next time I make a cage crinoline. Cage crinolines are super important in getting the right silhouette in mid-Victorian clothing without having to carry around tons of weight and bulk from stacks of petticoats! It makes achieving the necessary volume lightweight and is so much easier to walk in. This is the sixth video in my Hannah Alexander Alice in Wonderland cosplay series and I'm taking my research and inspiration from the mid-Victorian 1860's since that's when Alice in Wonderland was published and the time period that most matches Hannah's design.

    I always appreciate the Baby Bat cameo at the end. Such a little cutie.
    I’m so impressed by the quality and design of all of the things you make! It looks so friggin pretty! With each episode I’m more excited to see the final reveal.
    Good luck with all the moving work! Hope everything goes smooth!

      Ah thank you so much! Haha I am also excited to see the final reveal 😋 and moving is going... ok lol we’re having to move a bit sooner than anticipated and the renovation work is taking longer than we thought sooo pretty par for the course . But we’ll make it work out!

    The movement! The swoosh! This was really neat to watch, especially knowing that, if I were to make one of these, I would get distracted in the extreme and spend most of my time just playing with it like Baby Bat lol. Looking forward to the rest of the project!!

      Ah thanks haha I totally recommend making one anyways if you need one! It was a lot of fun to make and especially to wear 😋

  • @maisonirmgardhouseofirmgar5721

    I like how this is an abbreviated version of a crinoline, a skirt supporter.
    This is also more like what young people would have worn with enfantine skirts, so it’s unique and valuable to be able to study this shorter version.

    Now I have a weird urge to make a crinoline and I don't even do costuming! It's beautiful, I get the kitty's obsession with it. And you're probably right and the hoops won't move so much with skirts on. Only one way to find out!

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  Před 3 lety

      Ah well if you do make one I’d love to see it! I hope it’ll work out with the skirts like that haha, it would definitely make it easier!

  • @ShakespeareDoomsday
    @ShakespeareDoomsday Před 3 lety +9

    I can’t wait to see the finished product and the safety pin hack is genius! Another option for making sure the hoop skirt stays centered/back leaning is adding small weights to the front. If you do it so it’s easy to remove you can easily adjust it for possible other projects. Angela Clayton did that in at least one of hers (I’ll edit this once I find the correct video and time stamp).
    I’m beginning to wonder making a short hoop skirt and adding bars to attach an extension for a longer one would be a good idea or not.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  Před 3 lety +1

      Ooh I hadn’t thought of weights! That’s a really interesting idea, I’ll have to look into that ☺️ and I think an extension would work if it were snapped on to the end of the existing tapes maybe? Like if you had a snap an inch above the lowest hoop on the short one and had tapes that extended maybe 8” or something above and then it could just be a continuation. Also thank you!

      @@moth.faerie A pad at the back lifting that up will also work quite well, underneath the hoops. Ninonella's recent hoop skirt video shows how it affects the balance of the skirts.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  Před 3 lety

      @@KaloCheyna I did end up making a bum roll to go under the hoops! unfortunately it only helps the top few hoops so the bottom most ones still swing forward but i'm going to add a tape to it as well

  • @Pierre371
    @Pierre371 Před 3 lety +4

    You can try adding a hole to you waistband and attach hooks to your corset which the hole can hook through. I’ve seen some petticoats with that hole, and I don’t know maybe it will help 🤷‍♂️

    • @nerl7473
      @nerl7473 Před 3 lety

      Definetly second the corset hook. Most historical examples I've seen had the upper edge of the band at the waist in the back and the hook holding the band slightly below the waist in the front. You would have to put a "button" hole into the corset cover for it

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes a hook was definitely my thought too! I’m hoping it won’t be necessary once there’s weight from the petticoat and skirt but the extra insurance might not be a bad idea 😅 I didn’t know that about the lower waist in the front, thank you for the information!! And for the button hole part I totally would’ve forgotten then had to go back and do it after trying it on haha

    I wish I had known about Farthingale's when we were last in Stratford for the Shakespeare Festival. Once things open up, you need to go. And then you need to take the costume and props dept tour. It'll knock your eyes out.
    I love the safety-pin-hook hack. Right now one of the stuck projects is the Va-Voom bullet bra, so this will definitely save some time. Thank you.
    Would a large scale hook & eye do the trick for anchoring the crinoline in place? Fascinating process, by-the-by.

      I would love to see their costume department!! That sounds like so much fun, I’ve been wanting to visit Canada more once travel is ok so I’ll definitely have to add that to the list ☺️ bullet bra sounds like such a fun project I would love to see your work if you post it anywhere!!! And I think a hook and eye would work, that’s going to be my next attempt at a solution if it’s not held in place by skirt weight

    • @stevezytveld6585

      @@moth.faerie I was thinking skirt weights too. It's a bit of Edwardian technology, but why not hop a little, timewise?
      I know I've seen a hook on somebody's corset on the cos-tube so there's got to be an example somewhere in the usual suspects of The Met & V&A.
      Right now I am Seriously out of my depth for the bullet bra. I had to take an energy break and let things sit for the past week. 38FF. Hi. Bras are weird. So I'm farting around with the band, the cups and the straps. All at the same time. On a hand-crank sewing machine. This. Is kinda nuts...
      Apparently you need a cell phone number to have an Instagram account. Guess who was probably the only FR entry without one for supplementary photos and videos.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  Před 3 lety

      Oh I'll have to poke around to see who it was with the hook 😊 does the bullet bra have the same type of frame as a modern bra? I think I would try to get the frame sitting right first if I were making it, then mess around with the cup volume? Not sure if that helps but figured I'd throw it out there! And that's so frustrating about the cell phone number, I don't think I even registered that it was a requirement when I made my account! Maybe twitter or pinterest would work for sharing your work?

    • @stevezytveld6585
      @stevezytveld6585 Před 3 lety

      @@moth.faerie I suspect it was Cathy Hay? But I'm really not sure, watched so many of these. I think it was on the dominant side, about 2 inches off the bottom. Facing downwards.
      And yeah. Working on the frame first makes sense. I have the feeling I'm going to need to add boning (there's one at The Met with angled central bones).
      I think I can hang on for a few months for having an accessible cell phone. Mister Husband is doing some post Masters classroom work until June. I'm on a FB break for having to yell down one too many Trumpettes (too many fellow Gen Xer's have been... disappointing?, appalling?... my virtual voice is a bit hoarse...). So, pass on Twitter. But Pinterest is interesting. Thanks.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  Před 3 lety +1

      boning would probably help a lot! I always find my bras that have some side boning to be a lot more comfortable. and omg bless you for doing the hard fighting on the internet work, lol I think we could all use a break from those idiots.

    I’m currently bingeing this series, so I don’t yet know if you found a way to keep the hoopskirt from sliding around, but in case you haven’t, Bella Maes’ had a similar issue with her petticoats for her Cinderella dress and fixed the issue by sewing trouser hooks in the waistband of the petticoats and hooking them to her corset

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  Před 2 lety +1

      once the weight of the skirt and petticoats are all layered on it doesn't shift around at all, but thank you for the suggestion! if it ends up happening with lighter overlayers I'll definitely keep that in mind!
