I Made a Flower Crown for a Historically Inspired Victorian Alice in Wonderland Cosplay

  • I'm easing myself back into this project with Alice's Flower Crown! I'm still working on the skirt and getting it to the point where I can put it back together, so in the meantime I thought I'd work on one of the accessories. I was able to use a lot of the millinery techniques I learned in grad school and built a wire frame to make a sturdy base for all the flowers and beading on this head piece. It's a pretty simple project but looks exciting and was fun to make! I made the bow detachable to I have more versatility and can use each piece for other things in the future. This is part eleven of my series making Hannah Alexander's Alice in Wonderland design and my research and inspiration are drawn very heavily from mid-Victorian fashion, specifically the 1860s, since that's when Alice in Wonderland was written and what seems to most match Hannah's drawing.

    Honey Bee seems like an adorable, yet mischievous, addition to the family.
    This head piece is beautiful. I absolutely love how committed to being extra this costume design is. She could have settled for a bow, a flower crown, or a tiara, but she saw the potential in the power of all three combined.

    A bag of flowers = instant serotonin. Flower crowns just have that effect on me. Yours is gorgeous, it's amazing that you can apply your knowledge and see the progress. Honey Bee is such a sweetheart, I can't believe he's naughty! (Except that I can, he's a cat after all.) Looking forward to the next part of your project!

    It looks amazing!! I think it's so extra in the BEST way possible. The frame makes it more voluminous and come out a lot more than a standard crown and is genius (I'm just here taking notes). It's going to look so perfect atop the rest of the costume! Also I am already in love with Honey Bee his face is just too pure he could never do wrong.

      @@moth.faerie I’ve attempted to do necklaces and such before, but never bothered to learn how to tie off the knots neatly or anything. So never quite turned out right (understandably since I was being lazy about it).
      One of these days if a cosplay comes up that needs this kind of work, I’ll definitely be referencing this video for the bits you show plus the materials (such as the wire that won’t shatter in your hands).

    • @crystal8160
      @crystal8160 Před 2 lety +1

      I had the same problem with beading until my aunt taught me about tigertail wire. It's nylon chord coated in a thin metal and you use crimping beads to finish the ends. There is a special tool for it but it's really not necessary. I used my standard beading pliers and they always worked fine.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  Před 2 lety

      this is the knot that I always do! i.pinimg.com/originals/12/04/b8/1204b8d8204a8eb1f3639ccc3bcfe73e.jpg (hopefully that link works)
      for necklaces I use jewelry cord that you can get in the jewelry section at Joanns or Michaels or I'll do eye pin links where it's more like a chain of links. I used the wire for the tiara so it'll stand up by itself, but I think for hanging jewelry a fabric or nylon cord works really well!

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  Před 2 lety +1

      I've used tigertail before and I've always found it really slippery but it's been a while so maybe I should give it another shot! I do love how crimp beads look much cleaner than tying knots 😊

    Making my way through the Alice videos and I am absolutely fascinated by all of the skills you know/have from school. I am learning self taught/youtube and its a long process, but your videos are definitely making me aware of more proper techniques! Heck yeah hooray for progress 💙

      @moth.faerie  Před 2 lety

      yay progress! school definitely sped up the learning process and corrected a lot of my bad habits, but there's so much you can learn without schooling! youtube is definitely a good place to learn and i'm trying to share what I know so people who can't do the tuition/time commitment still have access to the same knowledge 😊

    Do you have a pair of flush cutters? It will make life a lot easier/precise cutting the wire. I bought a pair specifically for craft-type projects after using one of my ESD safe pairs...and then contemplated how the heck it took me so long to realize this was a much better option (used them all the time when I was working in a failure analysis lab).
