German Renaissance Festival?? Let's go to Koroneburg Festival!

My first time at Koroneburg Renaissance Festival! The Koroneburg Festival has been around for 27 years and unlike most other faires is German themed rather than UK/British themed. There were quite a few other European countries represented as well and all had fighting demonstrations. It seemed a little more rooted in historical accuracy than most renfaires which was really interesting! The food...

    The ethics of AI art in regards to personal use aside there is also the increasing environmental concern about how much power running all these AI programs is taking up. I have read a few articles about how the impact is already on par with the NFT / Crypto farm drain and only increasing so that is...not great. That makes me antsy. But the finished project is beautiful as always. You look very nice all dressed up and the make up is chiefs kiss as always.

    I would love to see a video about where you get all your sewing supplies (and honestly any sort of organization/room tours are my favorite - especially since it looks like you’re rearranging your sewing room!) I have always just gotten stuff at Joann’s because I can go in person, but it seems like a lot of places can cheaper when you buy in bulk and are more professional? Hopefully that could be a chill video and would help with sewing ~related~ content but not contribute as much to the burn out 😊 that is all too real

    also I second the other users that caution AI use- right now its extremely unethical and profits off artists copyrighted work. I don't think you used it in an unethical way but the foundation of the majority of the models are based on webscraped copyrighted work and i would be extremely cautious and probably avoid it just to be safe! Thanks for your transparency on your process :)

    AI art is absolutely unethical. Beyond even the art theft issues it's utterly apocalyptic for the environment in terms of both power and water usage. In addition, whilst I doubt you care about the opinion of one subscriber, I initially subscribed because of your really cool and creative design ideas, and now knowing that AI was used even once really discourages me from watching in the future. I know pinterest and other "inspiration board" sites have huge stolen art problems, but I still think you're able to exert an effort to be ethical and not use stolen art or AI generated images, whilst when using AI that's literally impossible based on how the image generator was trained.

    This was such a lovely process to watch, I'm excited to see the rest of the series!! I loved the reflection at the end. You put a lot of thought into your creations and it really shows ❤ ALSOO glad to see you opening up the comments section for more discussion and what counts as ethical/unethical in a non-argumentative manner. I'm currently taking UX/UI design classes, and it integrates use of AI into the course. It mentions that AI is still in its baby stages and can definitely help with brainstorming designs (we had some assignments that actually required using AI or making pinterest boards lol). Not that I support it, but obv there's a very gray area to its usage. ;; I definitely question the ethics around incorporating it into a professional atmosphere, but the way you utilized it in this video is very similar to how we've utilized it in an academic setting. In any case life is short, be the glitter pirate you aspire to be! You did a fastastic job❤❤❤

      Thank you!♥️ and it does seem to be an inevitability that ai will (and has already) become a part of everybody’s work process whether or not it’s in a creative field. Hopefully regulations get put into place that will help curb the bad parts soon!

  • @inkwingart
    @inkwingart Před 3 dny

    I think for me the difference between pinterest and AI in terms of art theft is that if i wanted to i could still track down the source for at least 80% of the images, if not more. And it’s *intended* use is to gather images, with links back to the source and proper credit, even if people abuse its functionalities. AI as it currently exist has art theft baked into it’s foundations. Also, artists are able to request DMCA takedowns of reposts on pinterest, while that is impossible with AI software. Others have mentioned the environmental cost already so i have nothing to add there. That’s just the ethical side, but i think AI is also detrimental to human creativity in the long run. As AI runs out of material to recycle, it will start to cannibalize images it has already put out, so results will become increasingly generic as time goes on. It also is highly discouraging to artists who are reluctant to post/share their work online out of fear that it will be used to feed these algorithms. And for context, this is my perspective as an artist and costumer with a large portion of my design degree being focused on the potential ramifications of AI. I do really like what you made, but i think it’s a concept you probably would have come up with even without using AI since it’s very much in line with the style and quality you’ve produced before.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie Před 3 dny

      I totally get that and agree! I think a bit of the misunderstanding is coming from my intention that I was using it as more of a visual aid than a coming up with ideas aid, if that makes sense? Less that I need ai to come up with the design and more that I have so many ideas and not enough time to fully render them to see which direction I want to go, and I was hoping to expedite the part of the design process that I find a bit tedious 😅 but all the discussion has come up with some convincing arguments for me to avoid using it, at least until (if ever) there are more regulations and ways to systemically make it more ethical on an art theft and environmental level

    So many people hating on ai even though it was just for inspiration. Designing a look is just the very beginning of a project and to discredit the whole process of pattern making fitting sewing and decorating is unfair. Corporations need to be better about how ai is trained but I for one will not overlook a well executed sewing project and all the hard work that went into it.

    I absolutely hate current AI generation apps, ChatGPT or otherwise. They are all unethically trained so your "inspiration" is actually being stolen from multiple creators and coz IA just regurgitates stolen content, you cannot even credit the artist you are drawing inspiration from. In fact, I clicked on your video after closing another one coz they were using ChatGPT, was so disappointed to learn a few mins in that you had ALSO used IA... I only came back a few hours later to finally watch the video just to see if you addressed its unethical origin. Cute project tho...

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie Před 4 dny

      Hey so first ty for the comment, I asked for opinions bc I was unsure how to navigate the topic as I mentioned in the video! Other commenters have made the point that ai is really bad for the environment and that generally using it feeds into an exploitative system which is reason enough for me to refrain from using it in the future. I started this costume and video series before I knew those aspects but wanted to be transparent in my process. I'd love an opinion on your thoughts regarding taking inspiration from content aggregation platforms like Pinterest where a large majority of the art is present without the artists consent, they're widely used but do you find those just as unethical? Not trying to argue or come off as aggressive, I know tone can be ambiguous over text! Other comments have stated the fundamental motives behind each (ai vs Pinterest specifically) contribute to how they view them so I also can get behind that but I like to hear as many opinions as possible!

    • @DeathRose96
      @DeathRose96 Před 4 dny

      @@moth.faerie I don't usually use Pinterest and from what I saw last time I checked, it was overtaken via IA generated images too. I prefer using Instagram when searching for "vibes" but if I stumble upon a photo that has been re-uploaded via a 3rd party account that doesn't credit the original artist/sewist/cosplayer, I reverse search the picture and more often than not I am able to find the original poster. I am of the opinion that even if it takes more time, be it on Pinterest, Google or Instagram, we should try to find and credit the original creator(s) if substantial inspo has been taken from their products or, if it only gives you a minor idea, at least try to support the creator with a like/subscribe/comment. Using IA entirely erases that possibility and takes disproportionately from minor creators

  • @alicedieudonne8356
    @alicedieudonne8356 Před 4 dny

    I have to admit... That the final outfit looks SO MUCH BETTER than the AI images that you used! Enough has been said about AI, I think it's not a fault by itself to use it as an inspiration , as long as you create your own version of it :) (the fault is more on big corporations using it and people that make AI models that clearly have no ethics) It's good to be conscious about what's behind, but let's not forget that everything you've done- from drawing the costume, to sewing, embroidery and makup, is 100 % human, and is amazing. Just enjoy creating amazing stuff , that's the most important :)

    all these top comments about AI don't even mention the amount of energy it takes to produce AI anything...i don't personally see too much of an issue in using it the way you did, you aren't selling anything or pretending you made it yourself so honestly 🤷‍♀️ it's the energy and water usage that needs to be front and center imo!! but rarely do arguments against AI really broadcast the toll it takes on the earth's resources. anyway this project is so beautiful!!❤

  • @fructifer4502
    @fructifer4502 Před 5 dny

    My 2 cents: the pushback you're receiving about the AI usage only half justified. AI is not inherently bad. OF COURSE it's wrong to train vision-language models on real artists' works without their consent, BUT it's also just as wrong (in my opinion) to flash an unattributed pinterest image on the screen and "cite" that as your inspiration. The latter is kind of the norm for online content creators, but people don't make nearly as much fuss about it. I think also think there's a HUGE difference between making a 2D digital image and sewing a real-life garment. You are not claiming that the AI-generated images are your art. You are claiming that the real, physical garment that you put hours of work into, that is tailored for your body, is your art. Derivativeness is acceptable (in my opinion) in the art of sewing, because everyone should have the ability to make something for themselves to wear. If you want to recreate, copy, or make a very similar version of an existing garment, that is acceptable (in my opinion) as long as you credit the original maker. In this case, where the garment is an amalgam of niche aesthetic trends, I don't really see a moral distinction between using AI to generate inspirational images, and scrolling pinterest or google ot tiktok for inspirational images (these websites are already using AI algorithms to decide what images to show you anyway). Literally the only qualm here (in my opinion) is that publicly available AI image generators are trained on art without the artists' consent.

    i am a bit waffly on the AI ethics debates being brought up in the comments (in the sense that i don't necessarily agree but could be convinced). many times when creators want to look for inspiration for making their own art, they look on Pinterest, aggregate boards, wtct, and most artists also don't intentionally share their art to be reposted to those aggregators. if someone wants to use an image as inspiration to create their own new art, is it unethical unless they can track down the original person who posted the art and ask for permission?

      I get your point with the pinterest thing - but I believe the main difference, the one that makes AI unethical, is the fact that the art people upload & use as inspo on Pinterest or other such platforms is actually made by artists on their own, while 'art' created by AI generators steals data from artists without their consent and generates 'new art' based on that stolen data. So the art pieces generated with AI are, in their core, unethically made. I don't think it's okay to take someone's art, upload it on Pinterest and claim it as your own, but there's also a difference between stealing/copying and being inspired by something. AI has nothing to do with inspiration because the whole art itself is based on stolen data. To your question: As long as you're inspired and not copying, I don't think you have to ask for permission to be inspired (but it wouldn't hurt to do so ofc!) - art today is pretty vast and chances are what someone else did has been done before in some way. Every artist has been inspired by something or someone, after all!

    I have to be honest, the use of AI for this concept is deplorable. As many people have said, AI "art" is completely unethical. These programs don't create anything, they just steal from artists who work hard to hone their craft and while I'm disappointed in folks who use it in general, it's an especially disappointing stance to see from you. You make a point not to buy from resellers at the ren faires you visit and share which ren faires do and do not allow people to sell non-artisan/mass produced goods. The goal is to support real artists who love what they do and want to share their talent and to compensate them fairly. Why is using AI art, for anything, any different from that? The artists that AI programs steal from are not any less deserving of having their art celebrated, shared, and properly valued. I can understand needing inspiration for your own art, but whether you're buying souvenirs at a ren faire or designing clothes for one as you did, there should be no theft from or exploitation of other artists at any point in that process. People (not you specifically) love to say there's no ethical consumption under capitalism, but you should hold it as a point of pride and integrity to be ethical in your own creation

      @@moth.faerie Hi!! Thank you for taking the time to reply and I'm glad you're taking the comments of the community with an open spirit!! Personally I've never been a fan of Pinterest either and don't use it in my own art. I think any use of an artist's work without credit is pretty bad whether that's through uncredited images on Pinterest or artist's work being fed through AI without consent. That said, it is difficult but a little easier to credit artists whose work you found using Pinterest. There are sometimes watermarks you can refer back to to find the original artist, occasionally a piece will link directly back to the original creator, and reverse image search can be tricky but doable in some cases. So while it would be ideal not to use Pinterest at all, I know that it's going to be like half the results you get if you Google what you're looking for and as long as you're willing to do the leg work, you can credit the artists whose work inspired you and direct people to appreciate their work instead of the Pinterest post that was made without their consent. Like you said, lots of people have spoken about the difference between the two and I agree with them that the foundations of Pinterest vs AI are completely different. One was made so that people could upload their own art and the other was specifically made and trained on art that cannot be ethically used in that way. I think there's a difference between people using a platform that was made with good intentions in an unethical way compared to people using an inherently unethical platform. At least if you're using Pinterest, you have ways to mitigate the harm to artists having their work posted there without permission by properly crediting them. Taking inspiration from AI makes that whole thing kind of impossible. You don't really have any way of telling whose artwork and style has been replicated to create the images you're seeing or how many there are or where to find them

    • @moth.faerie

      So I get all that for the most part, but I don't think it's really within reasonable expectation to credit every single source of inspiration for every work. Obviously if something is a direct inspiration, like how I credited the artist who inspired the wrist band embroidery, there should be a listed credit. However, frequently in the process of creation there a hundreds to thousands of influences ranging from an image seen on Pinterest the other day to art in a museum that was visited decades ago. There's no way to credit every single one of those works and artists, and if I were to inspire someone in an aggregated indirect way I would never expect credit for that nor would I probably even notice that they had taken inspiration from me. I recently got a dm asking if it was ok for someone to use the same patterns I did for my victorian alice cosplay, to which I replied that they're not patterns I created so they're not mine to permit someone to use or not. I said they could credit if they use the same pattern modifications I detailed in my video, since they're pretty specific to the project, but I'm well aware that my (and all) art is derivative on some level and so I wouldn't expect a credit anytime someone creates something indirectly referential. Like I mentioned before, Ill be refraining from using AI as a tool in the future, due to the larger scope of the problem, however I don't think the lack of crediting is really comparable to the level of exploitation present in mass manufacturing (for your example of buying from resellers vs artisans), and aggregating from Pinterest or image generators still feels similar to aggregating on Instagram for like ✨vibes✨ and inspo if that makes sense (outside of the general systemic and platform problems of course). But please feel free to explain further! (And to clarify I'm not saying that any level of exploitation is acceptable, but we're kind of at a pick your battles stage of capitalism rn. Also exploitation due to environmental burden is a different argument entirely, I just wanted to address your example regarding art theft/resellers etc) Hopefully that wasnt too hard to follow, the window I have to type comments in is very small so I'm not able to see everything I've typed at once 😅

    AI along with using art without consent, is also bad for the environment as it uses so much energy and water to collate and generate the data. I think we would all appreciate if you refrain in future please!

      I only found out about the environmental impact last week after this costume and video had already been made but it's definitely enough to make me rethink using ai in the future, thank you for your comment!

  • @EnchantedForestArts

    This turned out super pretty! Love the shimmery fabric 😍 Re: the whole ai debate we're all dealing with right now- I'm personally against it, since it's using other people's art without their consent as a training model. I think other people in the comments have stated it better than I currently can at this time. Unrelated to ai- those cuffs are so fun, I also love Saltwater Stitches' work, so beautiful... it looked like you weren't having the most fun with your metallic embroidery thread though, can I suggest DMC's Diamant line of thread? It doesn't do the horrendous-to-work-with splitty thing that their other metallic thread does, and *mostly* behaves itself lol

    i love your work, and i loved this top! that said - i don't think the use of AI generated images can ever be ethical even just using it as a "jumping off" point. AI trains on artwork and styles stolen from artists often without their consent and using it, even a little, creates more of a demand for those softwares and for artwork to continue to be stolen. genuinely, i don't think you were doing anything maliciously, but i do hope you can take that to heart. <3<3

      Thank you for your thoughts! So the generator I used had a bar at the bottom of the screen where it showed the photos it had pulled from (idk if they removed that feature I can't find it now), so I had felt like it was fairly similar to using images from Pinterest for inspo, but also was unsure so that's why I asked for opinions! With the comments I've gotten regarding environmental concerns and points like yours that it contributes to a larger problem are reasons enough for me to refrain from using it in the future, but I wanted to be transparent about my process for this project!
