I've recently been really into Italian Renaissance style gowns and rather than starting a new giant project decided to start with a smaller project! I am not great at hair styling lol so that took quite a few attempts and I'm still not really happy with how it turned out, but it's practice 😊 Not sure if the thing I made is actually called a Juliet Cap but that was the closest I could find for this specific item. Who knows it may not even be a real thing. I would like to attempt all of this again so any advice is appreciated!

They're called beaded cauls. Juliet caps are more solid, but can be made in sheer fabrics (like 1920s wedding veils).
Oh cool thank you!
This reminds me of whenever I get inspired to do a hairstyle so it's really nice to see someone else also struggle with stick straight hair (although your final result is gorgeous!). Also, how cool that you made your own decorative cap/caul!!
Aw thanks! The straight hair is a struggle lol but hopefully practice will help
@@moth.faerie Let us know if you find any tips to be particularly magical lol. I can't manage to keep my hair even wavy for longer than 45 minutes.
another way to make a hair rat is by using pantie hose and some pillow stuffing! rachel maksy has a great video on it :)
Oh cool I’ll try that!
Silky hair tip: spray dry shampoo all over your hair, then distribute an oil based heat protectant. This will give your hair grip and the ability to hold a curl for a longer period of time and add shine 👍🏽
It’s not just you! The slippery straight hair can just be super stubborn. Other commenters have mentioned texturizing and dry shampoo and in my experience that’s definitely the best way to achieve hairstyle success. I just hate the way the textured/dirty hair feels so I have to get past that ick if I want to do a complicated style.
Just keep trying!! There are so many hairstyles that I figured out by doing them over and over and OVER before I figured out what worked for me, or perfected the technique. Having more texture in your hair will certainly help with braids and wrapping. I love a good salt spray, or texturizing pomade for complicated or intricate braiding.
My hair is super long and also super thin and slippery when it's freshly washed, so I tend to use a combination of hair oils (food grade coconut oil works fine if you don't want to buy extra oil just for hair) and dry shampoo to give it some body and texture that will help hold it together in the braids and pins and ribbons.
I also have really fine, straight, slippery hair and I can tell you it is MUCH easier to do styles like this when your hair is a bit dirty. If you have just washed it, you definitely will need texture spray or dry shampoo to give it grip. I also find that adding a strong hold mouse or a beach spray (or even borh) to my hair while its still wet will help my clean hair not be so slippery if i have to style it.
I think both the hairstyle you came up with and the beaded caul/snood/juliet cap are super pretty! Also, other people may have said this as well, but another solution to the hair rat is tights filled with stuffing
I'm not good at doing my hair but I also haven't really tried to get good at it.🤪I also have ADHD and I can't care about what I can't care about, if you know what I mean. Hair is super low on my priority list lol. I have found that braided wool roving makes a pretty good rat, no felting required, but I have coarse wavy hair so there's no slippage. Thanks for posting even though it didn't turn out as well as you hoped. While it was frustrating for you, it's comforting to see other people struggle the same way I do.
I have a similar hairtype to you and when it was long i found the only way i could really style it was with braids. a couple of french braids around the crown with the ends tucked away was my go-to, but if you need to get it up in a bun for pinning into, a long braid will behave much better than twisted hair
That’s a really good tip, thank you!
You could make a hair rat with your hair from your shower brush. This way you know the hair is clean. Or make the hair rat with your regular brush hair, then wash the hair rat. Or, since you're not grossed out by hair extensions, tease and felt the hair extensions ❤ fun video ❤
I’ve never been that great at doing my hair either. Mine is really curly and never seems to grow past my shoulders. I always have split ends (even splits in the middle) no matter how often I trim it. Lol I’ve always just stuck it in a bin or ponytail. And now I’ll wear it down since I’ve found a good product I like that weighs it down enough that it doesn’t frizz but not so thick that it makes it stiff.
I love the cap though it’s really pretty.
It was actually encouraging to see someone who seems to be great at everything struggle with something for once...I also have always had trouble styling my fine, super straight hair. Your Juliet cap came out so beautifully!
My hair is very long, straight, and slippery and people always ask why I don’t do a bunch of “fun” styles. Because it takes forever, it’s a struggle while I’m doing it, and it just comes undone by itself after an hour at most.
The wool was definitely a choice, i get why you would want to try it. I have made hair rats using wig wefts and hair nets, it doesn't really have to be fully felted to be effective
My hair is very thick, straight, and long and the most reliable way for me to style tends to be using wet hair and braiding. I will just blow dry tje roots a bit before braiding and the hair dries into the shape I pin it in and holds better. It does work for twists, but they need to be almost french braided (picking up hair as I twist it around.
I also have slick, fine hair, and the one time a stylist used a rat on me she teased the hair that went over it, so it held together and didn't slip down off it.
The beaded cap came out so cool. I feel like that is a good piece for dressy-casual history bounding.
Whenever I think I miss having long hair, I have to remind myself how uncooperative my stick-straight, oily hair is! Right now I'm growing it out from a pixie to a lob, and if I want to play with longer hair than that, I'll get a wig 😂
Everything you just said about long hair that doesn't style well so never learning to resonates so much with me! Good luck on your experiments and I hope to learn with you❤
I know you've been burned out on sewing, so don't take this as any kind of pressure, but I really love "being" in your sewing room and I've missed it so much.
hey, at least you tried! i'm horrible at doing anything with my long hair too. also, love the dress you're wearing!
I have no idea how to do hair styles, so we're in the same boat. The hairstyle still ended up looking pretty though. I'd be excited to see how your skills develop over time as well.
What's your next Ren Faire? If you like camping, you should try to attend the Washington Ren Faire as we're one of the few that has onsite camping for the weekend.
Dry shampoo (I have non aerosol from Lush that I love) it'll give you hair more grip and LOTS of hair spray lol but hair styling is just trying and redoing it over and over. Don't worry you'll get better!
My hair is also stubborn and will flat out refuse to be styled in anyway that I want.
It's okay, I suck at hair too 😂 I think a lot of it has to do with my hair type. I just have to find what works, but I never want to take the time to do it!
Ok, so I didn't end up seeing this specific suggestion, though dry shampoo is pretty close: I bet if you wanted to do some more roccoco, pomade and powder would probably still work on your hair. Would extra awesome if you did a collab with Abby Cox for it too.
It's not easy to do your own hair. Try not to be so hard on yourself. I have a friend who does hair styling/braiding at ren faires all over. I can see if she has some suggestions on how to style your hair with the caul. Just let me know and I can connect you. 😊
Where'd you get that white sleeveless/corset style dress? it's so cute!
Minji: using my old hair gives me the ick...
Also Minji: if it doesn't match my hair I'll just add hair extensions ( i.e. someone else's hair)
Love it 😂 ❤
They’re synthetic!
@@moth.faerie hey if you only collect hair from after you wash your hair, then you know it's clean. Or you can wash it before making you own extensions. Takes care of the ick factor for me
I lack hair skills. I have long hair, for faires I usually braid it. I have fine hair. But I try to use wigs, but I have problems getting the wig cap to stay and the wigs to stay.
I have the same type of hair, very fine and long and doesnt hold any style. I also have no helpful suggestions because I hate using hair product and am very lazy (at least in terms of hair) 😅 I'm hoping to get a few tips from the comments here!
Part of the draw for doing 14th century, for me, was the ability to cover my hair because it's long and I also dunno what to do with it. Hahaha 😂
Also, for any "use your own hair for whatever" hairpieces, I use fake hair. I find it easier to manage & keep clean.
Ill try fake hair or a hair donut next! Definitely clean is a big plus lol
@@moth.faerie yeah, the thought of using what comes out of my brush is just... 🤮 pass. lol
Not helpful advice but when i got frustrated with my slippery long impossible for me to style hair i ended up shaving it off and just live with a short pixie now. i have 0 regrets at all and if i miss the length theres always wigs.
You'll figure out your hair!
Cool
Instead of pinning the braids, try sewing them in! It's a lot more stable than pins and if you use ribbons, it can look really pretty
Edit: if you don't want it to be noticable, string that's a similar color to your hair would be a good idea
I’ll have to google what that means 😅
@@moth.faerie That might be more historical too. They would basically sew braids to their heads.
Agreed! Ribbons are a great addition for slippery stick straight hair. Morgan Donner has a great video hair ribbons: m.czcams.com/video/dpT86z93Ec8/video.html
@@moth.faerieI think Morgan Donner has a video all about this kind of technique.
